A comprehensive catalogue of human digestive tract bacteria

The human digestive tract is home to thousands of different strains of bacteria. Many of these are beneficial, while others contribute to health problems such as inflammatory bowel disease. Researchers from MIT and the Broad Institute have now isolated and preserved samples of nearly 8,000 of these strains, while also clarifying their genetic and metabolic context.

This data set (BIO-ML), which is available to other researchers who want to use it, should help to shed light on the dynamics of microbial populations in the human gut and may help scientists develop new treatments for a variety of diseases, says Eric Alm, director of MIT’s Center for Microbiome Informatics and Therapeutics and a professor of biological engineering and of civil and environmental engineering at MIT.

“There’s a lot of excitement in the microbiome field because there are associations between these bacteria and health and disease. But we’re lacking in being able to understand why that is, what’s the mechanism, and what are the functions of those bacteria that are causing them to associate with disease,” says Alm, who is the senior author of the study.

The researchers collected stool samples from about 90 people, for up to two years, allowing them to gain insight into how microbial populations change over time within individuals. This study focused on people living in the Boston area, but the research team is now gathering a larger diversity of samples from around the globe, in hopes of preserving microbial strains not found in people living in industrialized societies.

“More than ever before, modern techniques allow us to isolate previously uncultured human gut bacteria. Exploring this genetic and functional diversity is fascinating — everywhere we look, we discover new things. I’m convinced that enriching biobanks with a large diversity of strains from individuals living diverse lifestyles is essential for future advancements in human microbiome research,” says Mathilde Poyet, a senior postdoc at MIT and one of the lead authors of the study.

MIT research associate Mathieu Groussin and former postdoc Sean Gibbons are also lead authors of the study, which appears in the Sept. 2 issue of Nature Medicine. Ramnik Xavier, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and member of the Broad Institute, is a senior author of the study along with Alm.

Microbiome dynamics

Humans have trillions of bacterial cells in their digestive tracts, and while scientists believe that these populations change and evolve over time, there has been little opportunity to observe this. Through the OpenBiome organization, which collects stool samples for research and therapeutic purposes, Alm and his colleagues at MIT and the Broad Institute had access to fecal samples from about 90 people.

For most of their analysis, the researchers focused on microbes found in about a dozen individuals who had provided samples over an extended period, up to two years.

“That was a unique opportunity, and we thought that would be a great set of individuals to really try to dig down and characterize the microbial populations more thoroughly,” Alm says. “To date there hadn’t been a ton of longitudinal studies, and we wanted to make that a key focus of our study, so we could understand what the variation is day-to-day.”

The researchers were able to isolate a total of 7,758 strains from the six major phyla of bacteria that dominate the human GI tract. For 3,632 of these strains, the researchers sequenced their full genomes, and they also sequenced partial genomes of the remaining strains.

Analyzing how microbial populations changed over time within single hosts allowed the researchers to discover some novel interactions between strains. In one case, the researchers found three related strains of Bacteroides vulgatus coexisting within a host, all of which appeared to have diverged from one ancestor strain within the host. In another case, one strain of Turicibacter sanguinis completely replaced a related strain of the same species nearly overnight.

“This is the first time we’re getting a glimpse of these really different dynamics,” Alm says.

Population variation

The researchers also measured the quantities of many metabolites found in the stool samples. This analysis revealed that variations in amino acid levels were closely linked with changes in microbial populations over time within a single person. However, differences between the composition of microbial populations in different people were more closely associated with varying levels of bile acids, which help with digestion.

The researchers don’t know exactly what produces these differences in amino acid and bile acid levels, but say they could be influenced by diet — a connection that they hope to investigate in future studies. They have also made all of their data available online and are offering samples of the strains of bacteria they isolated, allowing other scientists to study the functions of these strains and their potential roles in human health.

“Comprehensive and high-resolution collections of bacterial isolates open the possibility to mechanistically investigate how our lifestyle shapes our gut microbiome, metabolism, and inflammation. We aim to provide such a resource to the research community worldwide, including to lower-income research institutions,” Groussin says.

The researchers have also begun a larger-scale project to collect microbiome samples from a greater diversity of populations around the world. They are especially focusing on underrepresented populations who live in nonindustrialized societies, as their diet and microbiomes are expected to be very different from those of people living in industrialized societies.

“It may be that as populations that have been living traditional lifestyles start to switch to a more industrialized lifestyle, they may lose a lot of that biodiversity. So one of the main things we want to do is conserve it, and then later we can go back and characterize it as well,” Alm says.

The research was funded by a Broad Next 10 grant from the Broad Institute.

Serena Williams defeats Petra Martic during U.S. Open despite ankle injury

Serena Williams became a 16-time U.S. Open quarterfinalist on Sunday, but her latest history-making career move didn’t come without a price.

The six-time tournament champion suffered an injury to her right ankle during the fifth game of the second set of her 6-3, 6-4 victory over Petra Martic at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York on Sunday. But Williams was not about to let yet another injury dim her light as she went on to earn her 99th U.S. Open victory, CNN reported.

READ MORE: Serena Williams shows no mercy against Maria Sharapova winning US Open game one

Overcoming multiple injuries

Williams has braved through a series of injuries this past year. She rolled her left ankle during a quarter-final loss at the Australian Open in January. She then fell ill in Indian Wells in March, — followed by a knee injury and back spasms in Toronto last month that forced her to retire in the final against Bianca Andreescu. During an emotional moment for Williams, Andreescu walked over to her and knelt down and held her hands to comfort Williams as she wept.

With this latest injury, Williams said it’s too early to determine just how serious it is, according to Reuters.

“I usually know if it’s horrible early on. I mean, I had a really bad ankle sprain in January. I was like, instantly, ‘No, this can’t happen. I’m finally healthy,’” Williams said after the win over Martic.

“But I’ll see tomorrow. So far I’m good. I have been managing it. We’ll see tomorrow,” she added.

READ MORE: Serena Williams breaks down and leaves match after suffering from back spasms

Williams coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, later told reporters that she was not experiencing too much discomfort.

“It doesn’t seem — there is the video, but what is more important is how she feels and how the ankle looks. The ankle looks okay,” he said. “She doesn’t feel much pain. She feels, but it’s acceptable. And we will know tomorrow when it’s going to be cold.”

Doting on her daughter

Williams’ recent ankle injury occurred as the tennis superstar celebrated her daughter’ Alexis’ second birthday. Two year ago to the day, she was recovering from an emergency caesarean section followed by blood clots and several complications that curbed her from tennis tournaments for six months.

Earlier on Sunday, Williams posted a photo on Instagram from after the birth to her daughter writing, “The last 2 years have been my greatest accomplishment.”

R. Kelly girlfriends seek new love pad as Trump Tower condo lease ends

R. Kelly’s two girlfriends, Joycelyn Savage, 23, and Azriel Clary, 21, are reportedly looking for a new place to call home now that the lease is ending on the singer’s Trump Tower condo.

The two women had been living with the embattled artist since he took up residency at the Chicago condo until his arrest in July.

“They are looking to be moved,” Kelly’s attorney Steve Greenberg tells the Chicago Sun-Times. “They are not being evicted. I believe their [condo] lease is paid up for August and perhaps September. The landlord has been great.”

Greenberg also noted that his client “would live wherever his two girlfriends plan to relocate, and they are looking for a place in Chicago.”

Kelly, 52, Clary, and Savave “plan to live together,” Greenberg adds.

According to TMZ, the two women have been trying to raise the funds to hire Tom Mesereau, the attorney who got Michael Jackson acquitted in his 2005 child molestation trial. Unnamed sources tell the website that they are planning projects, including a book deal, that would fund the hefty cost of hiring the lawyer.

Meanwhile, the singer is currently petitioning a federal judge to be moved from solitary confinement and placed in general population.

READ MORE: R. Kelly’s attorney requests to move singer from solitary to general population

Legal reps for the R&B superstar filed documentation with the courts last week in hopes of having him transferred to the general area. The filing states that solitary confinement is a punishment for inmates already convicted, not for those who are awaiting trial.

Kelly is being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Downtown Chicago. Greenberg states he has no human interaction, does not see sunlight, cannot have access to the media or recreational activities and has all his face-to-face visits recorded. Even worse, he can only shower three days a week and has use of the phone once a month.

Greenberg has told the court that his client is being punished because of his “celebrity status” and due to the nature of his alleged crimes, TMZ reports. He intends to ask a judge to reconsider Kelly’s bond and request his release at a status hearing next week.

Kelly is also expected to be moved into the general population next week.

The R&B hitmaker faces 18 counts in federal indictments on various sex crimes in Chicago and Brooklyn. He faces 195 years for the Chicago case alone.

Dorian slams Bahamas with record-setting force, eyes Florida

McLEAN’S TOWN CAY, Bahamas (AP) — In a slow, relentless advance, a catastrophic Hurricane Dorian kept pounding at the northern Bahamas early Monday, as one of the strongest Atlantic storms ever recorded left wrecked homes, shredded roofs, tumbled cars and toppled power poles in its wake.

The storm’s top sustained winds decreased slightly to 165 mph (270 kph) as its westward movement slowed, crawling along Grand Bahama island Monday morning at 1 mph (2 kph) in what forecasters said would be a daylong assault. Earlier, Dorian churned over Abaco island with battering winds and surf during Sunday.

Information began emerging from the affected islands, with Bahamas Power and Light saying there is a total blackout in New Providence, the archipelago’s most populous island.

“The reports out of Abaco (island) as everyone knows,” company spokesman Quincy Parker told ZNS Bahamas radio station, “were not good.”

Most people went to shelters as the Category 5 storm approached, with tourist hotels shutting down and residents boarded up their homes. But many people were expected to be left homeless.

“It’s devastating,” Joy Jibrilu, director general of the Bahamas’ Ministry of Tourism and Aviation, said Sunday afternoon. “There has been huge damage to property and infrastructure. Luckily, no loss of life reported.”

On Sunday, Dorian’s maximum sustained winds reached 185 mph (297 kph), with gusts up to 220 mph (354 kph), tying the record for the most powerful Atlantic hurricane to ever make landfall. That equaled the Labor Day hurricane of 1935, before storms were named. The only recorded storm that was more powerful was Hurricane Allen in 1980, with 190 mph (305 kph) winds, though it did not make landfall at that strength.

Forecasters said Dorian was most likely to begin pulling away from the Bahamas early Tuesday and curving to the northeast parallel to the U.S. Southeast seaboard. Still, the potent storm was expected to stay close to shore and hammer the coast with dangerous winds and heavy surf, while authorities cautioned that it could still make landfall.

According to a Monday morning advisory from the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami, the storm was virtually parked over Grand Bahama island, which was in for a “prolonged period of catastrophic winds and storm surge” though the night. It also said Florida’s east-central coast may see a brief tornado sometime between Monday afternoon and Monday night.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster issued an order Sunday for the mandatory evacuation of his state’s entire coast. The order, which covers about 830,000 people, was to take effect at noon Monday, at which point state troopers were to make all lanes on major coastal highways one-way heading inland.

“We can’t make everybody happy, but we believe we can keep everyone alive,” McMaster said.

A few hours later, Georgia’s governor, Brian Kemp, ordered mandatory evacuations for that state’s Atlantic coast, also starting at midday Monday.

Authorities in Florida ordered mandatory evacuations in some vulnerable coastal areas. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper warned his state that it could see heavy rain, winds and floods later in the week.

Dorian first came ashore Sunday at Elbow Cay in Abaco island at 12:40 p.m., then made a second landfall near Marsh Harbour at 2 p.m.

“Catastrophic conditions” were reported in Abaco, with a storm surge of 18 to 23 feet (5.5-7 meters).

Video that Jibrilu and government spokesman Kevin Harris said was sent by Abaco residents showed homes missing parts of roofs, electric lines on the ground and smashed and overturned cars. One showed floodwaters rushing through the streets of an unidentified town at nearly the height of a car roof.

In some parts of Abaco, “you cannot tell the difference as to the beginning of the street versus where the ocean begins,” Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said. According to the Nassau Guardian, he called it “probably the most sad and worst day of my life to address the Bahamian people.”

Bahamas radio station ZNS Bahamas reported that a mother and child on Grand Bahama had called to say they were sheltering in a closet and seeking help from police.

Silbert Mills, owner of the Bahamas Christian Network, said trees and power lines were torn down in Abaco.

“The winds are howling like we’ve never, ever experienced before,” said Mills, who was riding out the hurricane with his family in the concrete home he built 41 years ago on central Abaco.

Jack Pittard, a 76-year-old American who has visited the Bahamas for 40 years, also decided to stay put on Abaco for Dorian, which he said was his first hurricane. A short video from Pittard about 2:30 p.m. Sunday showed the wind shaking his home and ripping off the siding.

The Bahamas archipelago is no stranger to hurricanes. Homes are required to have metal reinforcements for roof beams to withstand winds into the upper limits of a Category 4 hurricane, and compliance is generally tight for those who can afford it. Risks are higher in poorer neighborhoods, with wooden homes in low-lying areas.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Dorian is forecast to be 40 to 50 miles (64 to 80 kilometers) off Florida, with hurricane-force wind speeds extending about 35 miles (56 kilometers) to the west.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane watch for Florida’s East Coast from Deerfield Beach north to the Georgia state line. The same area was put under a storm surge watch. Lake Okeechobee was under a tropical storm watch.

Mandatory evacuation orders for low-lying and flood-prone areas and mobile homes were in effect starting either Sunday or Monday from Palm Beach County north to at least the Daytona Beach area, and some counties to the north issued voluntary evacuation notices. Weekend traffic was light in Florida despite those orders, unlike during the chaotic run-up to Hurricane Irma in 2017 when the unusually broad storm menaced the entire state.

Ken Graham, director of the hurricane center, urged people not to bet on safety just because the forecast track had the storm a bit offshore. With every new forecast, “we keep nudging (Dorian’s track) a little bit to the left” — that is, is closer to the Florida coast, Graham said.

President Donald Trump already declared a state of emergency and was briefed about what he called a “monstrous” storm.

“We don’t know where it’s going to hit but we have an idea, probably a little bit different than the original course,” Trump said. “But it can change its course again and it can go back more toward Florida.”

T.I. to debut podcast this fall to bridge gap on social issues

Rapper T.I. is not known for mincing words. Now, he plans to broadcast his thoughts in a new podcast series, ExpediTIously, which is slated debut in September.

With the growing influence of social media commentary, many hip hop artists have found themselves doing more than making music. Many are also commentators on any and every subject. T.I. is no exception, and the Grammy-nominated rapper told PEOPLE he wants to take things to the next level.

READ MORE: Serena Williams to attend Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka match, looks to the future

In a new deal with PodcastOne, the rapper plans to bridge the gap on a range perspectives and shed light on important social topics. The series is set to spark meaningful conversations with other celebrities and influencers like his wife Tameka “Tiny” Harris, LL Cool JIce Cube, and more, he told the celebrity publication.

“I’m becoming more and more known for my opinions,” he said. “I looked at my interactions on social media and realized that that platform wasn’t robust enough to flush out my ideas. In order to give those ideas a fair chance to breathe, I think my opinion requires a little more time and dialogue.”

With his new podcast, T.I. said he hoped people would get a better feel for his diversity of thought, but more importantly he wants to have a positive affect on this generation.

“Information was meant to be shared for the greater good to push the generation and the culture forward,” T.I. said. “What good does it do me to be informed if I am not willing to inform those who are uninformed? We sit down and have stimulating dialogues and conversations with people who have different perspectives, that directly affect the generation and the culture.”

Listeners can now subscribe to expediTIously on Apple Podcasts or PodcastOne. New episodes will drop every Thursday, beginning Sept. 5.

Smithsonian secretary Lonnie Bunch recalls uncomfortable visit with Trump

President-elect Donald Trump toured the African American Museum of History and Culture (AAMHC) in Washington, D.C., to commemorate Martin Luther King‘s birthday in 2017. Now, in a new memoir, the Smithsonian official who gave the tour said he was “disappointed” in the now president’s reaction to an exhibit on the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.

Lonnie G. Bunch, Smithsonian secretary and former founding director of AAMHC, recalls in his upcoming memoir, A Fool’s Errand: Creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Age of Bush, Obama and Trump, that Trump’s staff told him he “was in a foul mood and that he did not want to see anything ‘difficult.'” Bunch went on to write that he refused to “make the rough edges of history smooth, even for the president,” according to the Washington Post.

READ MORE: WAKE UP: Donald Trump’s DOJ and Comcast are dismantling Black Civil Rights

Trump was joined on the tour by Ben Carson, Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and King’s niece Alveda King, the Washington Post writes. And when Bunch began his tour in the history gallery, Trump did something rather, well, Trumpian.

“The president paused in front of the exhibit that discussed the role of the Dutch in the slave trade,” Bunch writes. “As he pondered the label I felt that maybe he was paying attention to the work of the museum. He quickly proved me wrong. As he turned from the display he said to me, ‘You know, they love me in the Netherlands.’ All I could say was let’s continue walking.”

Bunch wrote that he did not remember much else about the remainder of the tour, but could recall that Trump only showed obvious interest in the exhibits about Carson and Muhammad Ali. Though he expressed a felling a failure in his pursuits to bring a racial awareness to Trump during the tour, he hoped that Trump did learn something.

READ MORE: LeBron James to donate $2.5 million to National Museum of African American History and Culture

The Smithsonian secretary said he believed Trump’s presidency has deepened the racial and political divide, but the feedback he gets from visitors at AAMHC has given him hope.

“Many visitors have told me that since the election in 2016, the museum has gained even greater significance,” he wrote. “To some, visiting the museum allows them to find the solace, inspiration and hope that the current poisonous political partisanship and racial antipathy will one day be overcome.”

LeBron James seeks to trademark ‘Taco Tuesday’ in money move

NBA superstar LeBron “King” James has been keeping himself busy this summer with multiple projects, including working out, filming movies, and, uh, “Taco Tuesday?” Yes, you heard right.

The athlete has begun the process of trademarking the catch phrase amid the popularity of his social media videos about the Mexican dish, where he hilariously  announces, “It’s Taco Tuesday!” The short clips usually feature family, athletes, and celebrities. Besides making mouths water with the delicious images of tacos, the videos are often hilarious.

READ MORE: Serena Williams to attend Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka match, looks to the future

James and his company, LBJ Trademarks filed documents on Aug. 15, stating that James wants to trademark the phrase for “advertising and marketing services provided by means of indirect methods of marketing communications, namely, social media, search engine marketing, inquiry marketing, internet marketing, mobile marketing, blogging and other forms of passive, sharable or viral communications channels.”

ESPN reported that James’ team has no firm plans for the term but wants to keep business opportunities open. The sports medium also found out that James is not the only person trying to cop ownership rights to the phrase; there are at least 29 other applications on file with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for “Taco Tuesday,” with some of them requesting to use the phrase for electrical appliances, clothing and food, but according to ESPN, some of them are no longer active.

It has also been found that a taco restaurant in Wyoming had a trademark for the term as far back at 1989.

There is no word as to whether or not James has a chance at owning “Taco Tuesday,” but in the meantime the videos will suit us just fine.

#BlackGirlMagic: Naomi Osaka comforts Coco Gauff after win

After a competitive match, Naomi Osaka bested 15-year-old rising tennis star Coco Gauff, ending the teen’s run at the U.S. Open. Noticing an emotional and teary-eyed Gauff on the sidelines, Osaka did something any great winner would do: she offered her support.

On Saturday, after Osaka won her match against Gauff by 6-3, 6-0 solidifying herself as the defending champion, she noticed the teen crying on the sidelines. She gave Gauff a hug and encouraged her to address the 23,000 or so folks in the Arthur Ashe Stadium stands, according to The Associated Press. Encouraged by this gesture, Gauff obliged and expressed her gratitude.

“She just proved that she’s a true athlete. For me, the definition of an athlete is someone who on the court treats you like your worst enemy, but off the court can be your best friend,” Gauff said at a news conference, The AP wrote. “I think that’s what she did tonight.”

The 21-year-old two-time major champion, who has made history in her own right, praised Gauff, who has come a long way. AP reported that Gauff was previously ranked at No. 313 at the start of Wimbledon and is now No. 140.

“For me, it’s crazy to me to see how far she’s come in such a little amount of time,” said Osaka.

After admitting she had not been this focused since the Australia Open, Osaka went on to apologize to Gauff for playing her with “this type of mentality.”

Obviously, there was no love lost between the two as Gauff praised her opponent for getting the win, which is not surprising since the girls’ fathers are friends, according to AP.

“She was crying; she won. I was crying. Everybody was crying,” Gauff said. “I was like, ‘You won the match!’”

Osaka’s next match, which will take place on Monday, is against 13th-seeded Belinda Bencic of Switzerland.

“I definitely think it’s the future of women’s tennis. I’m really excited to just be a fan girl and kind of watch,” Williams, 37, said Friday in a post-game interview.

Osaka defeated Williams in the 2018 U.S. Open final for her first career Grand Slam title. Williams also opened up about her thoughts on Saturday’s U.S. open between the up-and-coming, Black tennis phenoms.

“I think it’s super exciting tennis. Coco is obviously much, much younger than Naomi, if you could say that, because Naomi is incredibly young [too]. But it’s shocking to say that Coco is about six years younger,” Williams said in an interview, according to the New York Post.

She continued, “I think she’s really pretty cool. I love her excitement on the court. I don’t know what everyone else thinks. I can only tell you what I think. I’m a big fan of hers. I have said that since Day One. I love her parents. I think she has a good family, and I think it starts there. It makes for a great athlete and a great person. I think anyone at 15 playing like that, people are going to be drawn to them. I think that’s pretty awesome.”

Illinois police probe chokehold arrest, girlfriend asks if victim has a pulse

An Illinois police department is investigating an officer who was captured on video tasing and placing Elonte McDowell, who is Black, in a chokehold during an arrest on a marijuana charge.

The DeKalb Police Department is investigating allegations of excessive force against of of its officers after a viral video made the rounds on social media. McDowell was arrested for marijuana possession related charges on August 24, according to ABC News.

Alyssa Retuerto, McDowell’s girlfriend, filmed the video and posted it to her Facebook with the following caption, “For you guys to decide. Right or wrong?”

Posted by Alyssa Retuerto on Monday, August 26, 2019

In the video, Retuerto can be heard asking officers why they needed to use a taser while McDowell was already subdued to the ground, and in a choke hold.

“He has a pulse, right? Like, you guys, can make sure that he has a pulse? ’Cause look at his face,” Retuerto is heard saying in the recording.

The department said officers pulled McDowell and Retuerto over after getting a tip about a man carrying a “load of drugs,” according to the department’s statement released o Tuesday. Officials also noted that they recovered a “felony amount of cannabis” from the vehicle, and while attempting to place McDowell in custody, he tried to flee the scene.

“Officers informed McDowell that he was under arrest and approached McDowell to place him into handcuffs. Upon doing so, McDowell attempted to flee. Officers attempted to restrain McDowell, who continued to resist their efforts to place him into handcuffs. During this encounter, a Taser was deployed to gain McDowell’s compliance,” ABC News reports.

McDowell admitted to having marijuana in his possession at the time, but he said the officers should be penalized for what he considered to be an excessive use of force.

“This is what some police officers do and you have to put a stand on it,” McDowell told Chicago ABC station WLS on Wednesday. “It’s not OK. … It needs to get out there. It happened one too many times. This happens every day.”

The department has since reassigned one of the arresting officers in McDowell’s case to administrative duties while they investigate the incident.

Will Sasha Obama walk in mom’s Alpha Kappa Alpha footsteps?

Sasha Obama kicks off her freshman year at the University of Michigan soon, and there is already talk of the 18-year-old possibly joining a Divine Nine sorority.

Starting next week, the youngest of the Obama girls will begin classes at the prestigious college, and if she so pleases to join the Greek family, the teen already has familial ties to the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) sorority, thanks to her mom, writes Yahoo! Entertainment.

READ MORE: Sasha Obama stuns in photos with her prom date

While she didn’t join any sororities during her time at Princeton in the 1980’s, back in 2008, Forever First lady Michelle Obama accepted an invitation to become an honorary member of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Fortunately for Sasha, AKA also has a chapter -Beta Eta- at the University of Michigan, in the event that she chooses to stroll in her mother’s footsteps.

Other honorary members of Alpha Kappa Alpha include the late, great Maya Angelou, Coretta Scott King and former astronaut Mae Jemison.

In 2008, Katie McCormick Lelyveld, a spokeswoman for Mrs. Obama, said that the then-FLOTUS’ membership in the sorority is “non-exclusive.”

“Because of her respect for each of the historically black sororities and fraternities, her membership is non-exclusive. She looks forward to working with all of them to help bring change to their communities,” Lelyveld in a statement obtained by The New York Times.

Criterion for consideration as an honorary member is that “prospects have made outstanding achievements that set them apart in their communities and careers,” the Times noted.

Alpha Kappa Alpha history dates back to 1908, when the very first chapter was created at renowned HBCU Howard University. Currently, there are over 1,000 chapters of the sorority nationwide, boasting over 225,000 total member.

Only time will tell if Sasha will join the renowned sorority. In the meantime, we wish the incoming freshman the best of luck in her collegial career.

R. Kelly refuses to share jail cell: ‘I have too much going on’

Singer R.Kelly, who was jailed last month at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago on child pornography charges and obstruction of justice, was recently written up for refusing to take in a cellmate.

Newly disclosed prison records reveal that the 52-year-old musician refused an order to take a cellmate at the special housing unit where he is being held, according to The Chicago Tribune. The downtown Chicago jail’s housing unit is said to be a more secure area for inmates, away from the jail’s general population.

Kelly reportedly responded to news of a possible cellmate by saying, “I was told I didn’t have to take a cellie and I have too much going on to worry about incident report,” the report says. An incident report stated that Investigators also cited that Kelly had a “poor attitude” throughout the investigation regarding the cellmate issue.

Kelly is currently being held without bail on a 13-count federal indictment in Chicago. It’s also alleged that in 2008, Kelly and two of his associates paid off witnesses and victims to change their stories in the disgraced singer’s previous child pornography trial in Cook County.

Earlier this month, Kelly’s lawyers filed a motion stating that the singer had been subjected to “draconian conditions” while jailed in the special housing unit. This past Thursday, lawyers filed a separate motion asking for Kelly’s “immediate release from solitary confinement,” The Tribune reports.

WATCH: Soca artist Kevin Lyttle debuts new single and talks about a reemerging influence in some of today’s hottest music

Multi-platinum soca artist, Kevin Lyttle, had everyone swaying their hips in 2004, with his hit single “Turn Me On.” Now, just in time for the West Indian Labor Day weekend festivities in New York City with a parade that attracts more than a million people each year, Lyttle is debuting the remix to his single “Close To You.” The melodic record has his signature island flavor infused with contemporary, tone-producing Afrobeats and features some familiar faces from the Love & Hip-Hop series, Safaree and Jaquae.

“The single is actually produced by Stadic,” Lyttle tells theGrio.

“He’s a producer from St. Vincent in the Grenadines who lives in Trinidad and Tobago. I went to Trinidad to record last year and he played the song for me. He was like, ‘Yo, I got this for you.’ He had already recorded it and I was like, ‘don’t change nothing. I’ll just go in and put in my leads and stuff.’ He’s actually a really good producer, singer, songwriter. I just went with the flow. Everybody who hears it likes the song.”

T

Today’s mainstream music is once again incorporating influences from Caribbean cultures. In R&B, Chris Brown sampled the hit single “Turn Me On” with his single “Questions” and if you listen to Drake’s music, you’ve heard a song or two exuding that infectious island sound. When asked about this imprint in popular music, Lyttle says, “I’m happy to finally see that the Caribbean culture and the American culturewhere music is concernedare coming together. It’s something that’s been kind of an iffy relationship over the years.”

“In 2004 and 2005, there was Sean Paul, me, Shaggy, Wayne Wonder. We all bled through and got in the top 10 of the Billboard charts here in America, which was very rare. It was that type of time.”

While music has changed enormously over the last decade, it’s ability to go beyond borders has not. Lyttle is happy to see that American artists are reaching out to the diaspora, but warns that there is still much more that can be done to expose new artists to a different array of fans.

“I’m seeing that there is just so much more influence happening internationally because of the Afrobeat, Soca, and Dancehall. I think that America is still behind in terms of the integration of these other cultures into that part of their lifestyle,” said the 42-year, who was born in St. Vincent.

“There are African and Caribbean people living everywhere, but in America, for some reason, you don’t hear that type of music and culture being pushed in the way that you hear it in Europe. There, you will hear everything on the radio. If it’s hot, happening in Afrobeats, and somebody in another culture likes it, they going to play it, but, in America, we’re just starting to see the possibilities. I’m very excited for that, but we need to get with the program in America and really start diversifying because we’re missing out on so much great music in general.”

Simone Biles sends emotional tweet after brother charged in triple-homicide

Hours after his arrest, the 22-year-old gold-medalist and gymnast took to her official twitter to state: “Eating my feelings don’t talk to me.”

Although Biles and her brother grew up in different households, the two still remained in contact, with the gymnast even once uploading a photo of her and her brother to her Twitter back in 2017.

Due to her mother’s ongoing battle with drug and alcohol addiction, when the star athlete was just six years old, she was placed in foster care, along with her brother Tevin, and sisters Adria and Ashley, according to The Washington Post. Although born in Columbus, Ohio, Simone and Adria later moved to Texas to live with their grandfather, while Tevin and Ashley remained in Ohio, where they were raised by their great aunt in Cleveland.

Middle schooler creates school closet for needy classmates

An eighth-grader is ensuring his classmates will have always have access to clothes by creating a closet in his school.

Chase Neyland-Square, who attends Port Allen Middle School in Port Allen, La., Chase helps to organize and operate “PAMs pantry,” a space in the school that houses clothes, hygiene products, shoes and more for students who may need them.

READ MORE: Nervous about being a first-gen student? No worries, Michelle Obama’s got you

The idea sprouted by students who were looking to assist fellow students who may not have the same access to nice items, such as an outfit for graduation. The school has many students from low-income families.

“My favorite part about helping with the pantry is getting types of clothes and sorting them out to give to various people,” Chase told ABC’s Good Morning America. “It makes me feel good because I know that I can make a difference in my school.”

“We really want the kids to feel like they have somewhere to go when they need something,” principal Jessica Major said. “We only have 215 kids so we’re able to get to know them really well…and try to help them where we can.”

Chase led the charge for the initiative by building the space out and fielding the donations that ranged from jackets to football cleats from community members. The donations are organized in the space by him, while Major and her secretary assist in the distribution of goods as they are needed.

NFL free agent Ryan Russell comes out as bisexual says he’s tired of hiding it

Ryan Russell, an NFL free agent, has come out as bisexual and says he’s just plain tired of hiding himself from the world.

Retired NFL player frantically pleas for help from the league: ‘I have to get my head checked’

The 27-year-old said he wants to live his life openly and play for the NFL once again and that those two realities, “shouldn’t be in conflict.”

Russell penned a heartfelt essay for ESPN and opened up about his hopes for living his best life without his sexuality being an issue both on and off the field.

“My truth is that I’m a talented football player, a damn good writer, a loving son, an overbearing brother, a caring friend, a loyal lover, and a bisexual man,” he writes.

“There isn’t a single openly LGBTQ player in the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball, or the NHL,” and that he says “brings me pause,” Russell writes.

“I want to change that—for me, for other athletes who share these common goals, and for the generations of LGBTQ athletes who will come next.”

Russell is a free agent defensive end and in 2015 was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys. He played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the next two seasons.

In 2018, he said he was out the whole season because of a shoulder injury.

He said he was scouted by an NFL team that was interested in signing him, but said that he’s had enough and that would be the last time he would “ever interview for a job as anything other than my full self.”

“Out of love, admiration and respect, I want the next team to sign me valuing me for what I do and knowing who I truly am,” he writes.

New England Patriots’ player indicted on drug possession charges

“I just want to play ball for a team that knows me off the field and values me on it. I want to encourage teammates to be the same people they have always been. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey asks for forgiveness after a taped interview reveals she allegedly wore blackface for a college skit

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, is begging for forgiveness Thursday after news of her wearing blackface in college came to light.

UNDER ATTACK: Alabama governor signs near-total abortion ban into law

Ivey, a Republican, is getting slammed admist calls for her resignation after her then-fiancé Ben LaRavia recalled during an interview that she participated in a college sorority skit for Alpha Gamma Delta wearing blue coveralls and with “black paint all over her face,” The Birmingham News reported Thursday.

Ivey, 74, said she has no recollection of taking part of the racist skit but she was at the time president of her Alpha Gamma Delta pledge class at Auburn University.

Ivey issued a statement addressing the issue:

“I have now been made aware of a taped interview that my then-fiance, Ben LaRavia, and I gave to the Auburn student radio station back when I was SGA Vice President,” she said in a statement obtained by The Birmingham News.

“Even after listening to the tape, I sincerely do not recall either the skit, which evidently occurred at a Baptist Student Union party, or the interview itself, both which occurred 52 years ago. Even though Ben is the one on tape remembering the skit — and I still don’t recall ever dressing up in overalls or in blackface —– I will not deny what is the obvious. As such, I fully acknowledge — with genuine remorse — my participation in a skit like that back when I was a senior in college.”

Ivey defended her character saying, “that is not who I am today, and it is not what my administration represents all these years later,” and offered “heartfelt apologies for the pain and embarrassment this causes.”

She said “the Alabama of today is a far cry from the Alabama of the 1960s.”

Yeah, right.

Why every Black woman in America should be concerned about Alabama’s abortion ban

Rep. Juandalynn Givan (D-Birmingham) demanded that Ivey step down immediately.

“I don’t care if it was 52 years ago or yesterday,” Rep. Givan told The Birmingham News.

“She is the governor of the state of Alabama, which is still considered one of the most racist states in the U.S. This is who she was then. It is who she is now. I have nothing for her. I don’t accept her apology. She should have stood before the people of Alabama herself. She should resign. I don’t think she should have been elected, and I think she is a racist.”

“It is not acceptable any time or place,” Givan said. “Do us a favor and step down.”

Ivey’s blackface fiasco now joins the ranks of a number of politicians whose past have come back to haunt them, including Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam and Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring, both who participated in events during their college days wearing blackface.

Judge Mathis calls valet’s claim he spit in his face ‘money-grab’ claim

Judge Mathis says he was not out of order and denies a parking valet ugly accusation claiming the venerable legal eagle and TV star spit on him.

Simone Biles’ brother arrested for a triple murder at an Airbnb

Video went viral showing Judge Mathis and the valet in a heated exchange over why it was taking a lengthy amount of time for the valet to retrieve Mathis’ Rolls Royce.

It appears that the Judge is giving the valet quite a tongue lashing as he leans in to the car window and tells him off about his tardiness. And that’s when the valet claims that Mathis spit in his face.

Judge Mathis vehemently denies the accusation.

“First of all it was a 40-minute wait and when he came I yelled at him,” and there was a verbal back and forth, he admits.

“There was no spitting. There were six witnesses there. Ask them,” the judge tells TMZ.

“I don’t know if this is a money grab, which I suspect it is. People get accused all the time and it’s not true,” he said.

Mathis says he has a stomach condition that required medicine that was in his trunk that he couldn’t get to because of the long wait for his car.

Well one thing is for sure, Judge Mathis will fight this case since he is an advocate who fights for the people.

Judge Greg Mathis is one of the longest-serving arbitrators in television history. The show celebrated its 20th anniversary this season and won the 2018 Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Legal/Court Program.

And as Mathis continues to serve justice on our television screens, he is also fighting just as hard for justice when he’s off the bench.

The Detroit native has a history of giving back to the Black community. Never forgetting his roots, which includes a troubled childhood, he has continued to provide services to better the lives of others and lead them on the right path.

Mathis opened a community center in his hometown and has assisted thousands of young people with his non-profit agency, Young Adults Asserting Themselves (Y.A.A.T.), an agency that provides career, business start-up, and job opportunities, as well as job training and college enrollment assistance.

OPINION: Black mothers need to wield the enormous power of breastfeeding their babies

Last year, the Judge headed back to the city of Flint where he and several members of Flint’s clergy, community organizers, and concerned citizens rallied to challenge the state government to rebuild the city’s corroded pipes and restore clean water once and for all.

During an interview with theGrio, Mathis opened up on why this issue is so personally important to him.

“In 2016, we had marches, rallies and legal for,” said Mathis. “We all hosted it and we lobbied congress and senate to get two hundred million dollars. And so we slowed down knowing that the money was there.”

“However, in the last few months, the state stopped giving away free water even though the pipes haven’t been rebuilt and the people don’t trust that this lower land level is safe to drink. So, we’re taking a caravan of water with semi trucks and about 30 carloads in Detroit on November 1st to bring those folks water and we’re going to have a rally challenging the powers that be, the elected officials and the state officials to get things done. They’ve only completed half of the pipes although they’ve had two hundred million dollars since 2016.”

It took police eight months to investigate and find Biles-Thomas.

“It is through their hard work that we can begin to seek justice for these victims,” O’Malley said.

Biles-Thomas, who is in the U.S. Army, is the only person so far to be charged in the shooting. He is being held at Liberty County Jail in Hinesville, Georgia and will be arraigned Sept. 13 in Cleveland.

According to Time.com, Biles-Thomas, his sister Simone and their two other siblings spent their early childhood going between foster homes and the home of their mother, who struggled with drug addiction. When she was six, Biles and her younger sister were adopted by their maternal grandfather Ron and his wife Nellie. Biles-Thomas and their other sibling were adopted by Ron’s sister, according to a Texas Monthly profile on Biles.

OPINION: Black mothers need to wield the enormous power of breastfeeding their babies

This 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans to the shores of Virginia on August 25, 1619 was a time for African Americans to re-assert our full humanity. As a mother, holistic doctor and longtime advocate of the benefits of breastfeeding, I am moved that this anniversary also fell at the beginning of National Black Breastfeeding Week which is celebrated between August 25 to 31.

There are many things we cannot control about living in a society that is steeped in the fallacy of a belief in racial hierarchy, which spreads racism and conscious and unconscious bias through society.

However, mitigating disease risk and enhancing the development of our babies through optimal breastfeeding is an area of potential agency for us. It is a form of control and power; a way to resist and counter slavery’s legacy of separated families, loss and maternal trauma.

Nested within National Breastfeeding month is a week dedicated to African American mothers, families and health advocates to focus on breastfeeding in our community and the public policies needed to support mothers providing this crucial “first food” for our children.

Our goal is to make breastfeeding a cultural norm for Black families in the United States; and to eliminate disparities in the rates of initiating and sustaining breastfeeding throughout the first year of our babies’ lives.

Currently, only 64% of Black infants receive their mother’s milk as their natural first food, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that breastfeeding initiation rates were significantly lower among Black infants in 23 states.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for six months. Solid foods can be introduced at six months, but access to mother’s milk should be sustained throughout the entire first year of life, at a minimum.

The 21st century has generated a global consensus about the benefits of breastmilk. It provides ALL the nutrients, vitamins and minerals babies need in the first six months of life. Additionally, breastmilk delivers protective antibodies to thwart infectious diseases and establish a healthy intestinal bacterial environment needed throughout life. The benefits don’t only accrue to the babies; breastfeeding reduces mothers’ risks of breast cancer, obesity and diabetes.

Given the persistence of health inequities, especially of our vulnerability to stress related chronic illnesses, the proven health benefits from optimal breastfeeding — physical and psychological — must make support of breastfeeding a top priority for African Americans.

Challenging the Cultural Norm

Cultural norms are the standards we live by, they are shared expectations and rules (often unspoken) that drive our behaviors. I became a grandmother almost a year ago and I can joyfully report that my grandson, daughter and son-in-law are still a breastfeeding family. I say family to emphasize the importance of fathers, as well as mothers, in breastfeeding success. My daughter and her family have beaten the odds.

According to data from the CDC, African American families initiate breastfeeding at lower rates, our babies are less likely to be exclusively breastfed at six months or continue receiving any mother’s milk at 12 months.

Like any other cultural norm, we learn to prioritize breastfeeding from our families, friends, from the media, in schools and throughout our institutions.

I want to applaud Kimberly Seales Allers, an author and leading advocate for Black women’s health, for proposing the idea of Black Breastfeeding Week in her blog more than 10 years ago.

It’s a sweet irony that the date coincides with the Jamestown Anniversary date. Our sojourn as an enslaved people in this country began at the beginning of this week on August 25th four centuries ago. However, our health and well-being as an emancipated and resilient people require us achieving optimal breastfeeding rates.

Slavery found unspeakable and immeasurable ways to exploit the Black body, particularly the bodies of African American women. Forced wet-nursing or breastfeeding white babies was one form of exploitation of Black women during the centuries of enslavement. Some believe that even today this memory and legacy continues to serve as a barrier to embracing breastfeeding as a cultural norm within the Black community.

There are many other economic and policy barriers to be addressed. Black women are more likely to work in lower paid, non-union, contract and temporary jobs and not receive any paid maternity leave to allow them time to establish a solid breastfeeding pattern. The same employers are often not required to adopt the breastfeeding friendly requirements in the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare or the ACA). Obamacare requires larger employers to provide breaks and appropriate spaces for expressing milk for nursing mothers. The ACA also required insurers to cover costs of breastfeeding equipment and supportive services such as help from lactation counselors.

I have been an advocate for breastfeeding throughout my career as a holistic doctor. As Vice President for Food, Health and Well-Being at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, I created and oversaw a strategic initiative to help close racial gaps in breastfeeding rates. We invested tens of millions of dollars over a decade and helped spur the new consensus that breastfeeding matters as public health policy. The 2011 Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding was among the many coordinated national efforts to foster new momentum.

For babies born in 2014, 83 percent of parental respondents to a survey conducted by the CDC indicated breastfeeding at some point; 55 percent reported still breastfeeding at six months and 34 percent reported breastfeeding at 12 months. These numbers show significant improvements since Surgeon General Regina Benjamin urged people in all sectors to take specific action steps to support breastfeeding mothers and babies.

While overall rates have improved, racial disparities remain. Let’s leverage this momentous anniversary of the African American community by affirming two firsts: the arrival of our ancestors and their central role in building this nation and the central role of nature’s first food, mother’s milk in fostering our capacity for resilience and thriving against all odds!

Kendall Jenner accused of cultural appropriation for wearing cornrows…again

Kendall Jenner has pissed people off by once again wearing her hair in a braided hairstyle.

Alice Marie Johnson, freed from prison, promotes Kim Kardashian shapewear line on Instagram

But the reality TV supermodel, who has before been accused of cultural appropriation, seemed unbothered by the backlash, posting up pics out and about Aug. 23, showing off her cornrows as fans reminded her the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star to stay in her lane, PEOPLE reports.

“I’m EXHAUSTED of white people constantly appropriating black culture and wearing hairstyles that we are always ridiculed/ chastised for having and just doing it because they want to ‘look different’ or ‘stand out,’ ” wrote one user. “We wear these hairstyles to PROTECT our natural hair from damages but they wanna wear it because it looks cool. It shouldn’t be worn by them period.”

Another upset fan wrote, “She never learns.”

Most recently Kim and Kylie Jenner came out showing off a one-legged bodysuit with E! News giving them a shout-out saying they were one leg up on a trend. However, famed Olympic runner Florence Griffith Joyner, aka Flo Jo, been there, done that decades ago.

Kim has defended wearing braids saying that her oldest daughter North loves them and courages her to them to wear them.

“My daughter actually loves braids, like this last time I wore [them], she helps me pick out a look and will show me pictures. I just think if it comes from a place of love and you’re using it as cultural inspiration, then I think it is okay,” she continued. “Sometimes I think maybe if you don’t communicate where you got the inspiration from — and I’ve done that in the past — then people might not understand it,” she previously said.

“I think as long as it comes from a place of love and you’re getting inspired, then it is okay,” she added.

But North is actually Black, but we digress.
