Wendy Williams Lifetime biopic will address Notorious B.I.G. hook up allegations

Did Wendy Williams have sex with late rapper Biggie Smalls?

According to the Atlanta Black Star, Sunday evening the talk show maven addressed the gossip about her relationship with Biggie during the after show for “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.”

READ MORE: Wendy compliments 50 Cent, but you’ll never guess his response

The claim of a sordid tryst between the radio host and the rapper were first made public by his protege Lil Kim who believed Williams once hooked up with her ex-boyfriend. And when a viewer asked if she’d be addressing that long standing rumor in her upcoming Lifetime biopic, tentatively titled Just Wendy, the 55-year-old confirmed that would be one of the many things covered in the movie.

“That will play out in my Lifetime movie, OK?” she responded before falling into a fit of giggles and hiding her face in her hand.

Lil Kim and the talk show host have had a prickly relationship over the years that came to a head in 2013 when Williams publicly speculated about the female MC’s extensive surgical procedures.

“In my mind, I knew your goal was always to look like La Toya Jackson. You’ve out-La Toya’d La Toya in your new look. Don’t blame Photoshopping, blame your plastic surgeon, girl,” she said in an on-air segment. According to MTV the clip was also posted to her Twitter account with Kim tagged in it.

When Kim caught wind of what had been said she lashed out and responded directly to Williams, “Stop hating on me because U sucked Big’s d— & he didn’t want nothing to do with yo ass after that,” then added in a separate post, “It’s time for the world to know the real. I’m not playing with yo ass no more. Let’s Get it!!!!”

Williams new biopic is reportedly planning to tackle not just that incident but several other moments of contention on the host’s life and she will be co-producing the project with Will Packer, the man behind comedy hits like Girls Trip, and the Think Like A Man franchise.

How Aunt Vi on ‘Queen Sugar’ gave me hope as a Black woman living with lupus

Queen Sugar‘s Aunt Vi gave me hope at a time when I needed it the most.

At the end of 2017, I found myself in the midst of a battle with lupus, a chronic illness I’d been diagnosed with two years earlier, which rocked me to my core.

Like many other young Black women who are diagnosed with the autoimmune condition in the prime of their life, I was surprised, fearful and trying to appear unphased in a demanding media industry that required me to always be on with a smile.

READ MORE: Michael B. Jordan and celeb pals throws lupus fundraiser to spread awareness

They call lupus a “cruel mystery” because while survivors may look perfectly fine on the outside, when its active your immune system is attacking itself and your organs.  It can feel like having the flu or achy joints 24-7. It can interrupt your breathing or cause rashes to appear on perfectly beautiful brown skin. It can make you tired and drain your excitement for life, mentally, physically and emotionally. Everyone suffers differently, which is why no one person, whether you have lupus or not, can dictate the pain you’re in or the depth of your struggle.

When I saw that the character of Aunt Vi, played by the phenomenal actress Tina Lifford, had been diagnosed with lupus on Ava DuVernay‘s hit show, I felt seen and affirmed. I’d been keeping my diagnosis a secret outside of my inner circle, but even the weight of wearing the mask of perfect health was becoming too much to bear.

READ MORE: Bianca Lawson talks ‘Queen Sugar’: ‘I hope the Darlas of the world feel less alone’

In true form, the universe is always just right on time because not long after that episode, I received an invitation to attend a special taping of a Queen Sugar post-season special in Hollywood. OWN invited myself and a small trio journalists to a private after-party where I would get to meet none other the two women behind this storyline, DuVernay and Lifford.

With my heart quickly beating, I approached DuVernay as soon as there was the slightest of pauses in the buzzing crowd surrounding her. It allowed me the short opening I needed just to say hello.

“Ava, I know you don’t know me but I want to thank you for writing a storyline that includes a character with lupus,” I remember saying, trying to gather the courage to keep going.

“I was recently diagnosed with lupus and it means so much to me.”

DuVernay, who has since revealed publicly that she has been in remission from lupus for the last 20 years, told me words I have continued to cherish for months and encouraged me to connect with Lifford.

The first thing I did was thank her for playing a character who had the courage and willingness to fight this disease, whether it be motivated by the love of her man or the success of her pie business.

READ MORE: Ava DuVernay selected to co-chair Prada advisory board on diversity and inclusion

Lifford looked at me lovingly as I told her my story and then hugged me tight like I was her own. She told me that since developing that storyline, she has spoken to many women who bravely face the condition on the daily.

“Contact me the next time you’re in L.A. and we will talk more,” she said, extending her contact information.

My heart swelled with emotion, happiness and even relief.

What happened here is the true explosion of power when Black women directors, storytellers and actresses can authentically come together to ensure that our experiences are represented properly and not reduced to two-dimensional caricatures.

Yes, we are indeed strong Black women, but we are also human beings who wrestle with doubt and anxiety too.

Yes, we can successfully battle chronic illnesses and diseases, but we also deserve to be desired, loved and wanted by the romantic partners in our lives.

Yes, we can diligently work to reclaim our health, but there may be times when we need help handling our professional responsibilities, whether we are entrepreneurs or award-winning filmmakers.

Lifford has always been an advocate for what she calls “inner fitness,” a wellness philosophy that encourages people to care for their internal and external health.

In a phone interview some days later with me, she talked about the message of hope she wants to give to anyone who lives with lupus, but particularly Black women who are disproportionately affected:

“So much of our pain is in how we hold a thing,” Lifford said. “Meaning, our beliefs around a thing. I would ask anyone to challenge the beliefs that you’re holding around whatever it is you’re going through.”

“Let’s make sure that we’re talking about lupus or we’re talking about using your job or the divorce and we’re not talking about the ruining of the rest of your life… Just because you have lupus does not mean that you can’t go off and write, direct, and deliver a piece like “When They See Us.”

WATCH: Three courageous Black women candidly share what life is like with lupus

Don’t think that your dreams are tied to your disease. When we empower ourselves, meaning our hearts, meaning we take charge of how we think and how we dare to think in spite of you know old conditioning then we can take charge of our experience and it can be greater than we can even imagine.”

Whether you’re facing lupus or something else is testing your faith, hold your struggle with hope as a core belief. Just like when I met her in person, Lifford’s words over the phone, were an affirmation to me to never surrender life’s many peaks because of one valley.

Since our meeting, I’ve shared my lupus journey nationally and internationally, letting go of the burden of silence. With each new episode of “Queen Sugar,” I see Aunt Vi living victoriously and it shows me and others, that we can do the same.

Miami Dolphins’ Albert Wilson still kneels on the field

Miami Dolphins‘ receiver Albert Wilson kicked off the season opener with his continued support of protesting racial injustice by kneeling from the sidelines.

The Dolphins have now earned a spot in history as the team with the longest running protest in the NFL against social injustice at four straight seasons, The Sun-Sentinel reports.

After Miami Dolphins player Kenny Stills criticizes Jay-Z for NFL deal, his coach plays all the rapper’s jams at practice

Wilson’s protest this time however was even more personal. He explained that he was kneeling for his friend Kenny Stills, because he was traded to the Houston Texas from the Dolphins where he played for the last four years.

“I don’t feel like anything has changed. We’re protesting social injustice and police brutality,” said Wilson, who suffered a calf injury in the first half and sat out the second half of Sunday’s game. “Things haven’t changed since last year so we’ll continue to protest.”

On Monday, during his first game for the Texans, Stills kneeled too.

Still was trolled last month when he was still a Dolphins, after he criticized Jay-Z for NFL deal, and his coach played all the rapper’s jams at practice.

On Sunday, the Dolphins didn’t win against the Baltimore Ravens, (59-10), but that won’t keep Wilson from continuing Colin Kaepernick’s legacy of kneeling protests.

Dolphins coach Brian Flores is on board with backing his players, especially as a Hispanic man who grew up in Brooklyn, New York.

Patriots’ Michael Bennett holds his NFL checks until end of season

“Quite honestly, they’re bringing attention to my story. So, let’s talk about that. I’m the son of immigrants. I’m black. I grew up poor. I grew up in New York during the stop-and-frisk era, so I’ve been stopped because I fit a description before. So everything these guys have protested, I’ve lived it. I’ve experienced it,” Flores said.

“I applaud those guys, how [they] protest. Whether it’s Kaepernick, or Eric Reid, or Kenny, I applaud those guys. I told Kenny that in our meeting, in front of our entire team.”

Black-Owned Roaming Rooster Booms After Chicken Sandwich Beef

So who you got? Popeyes or Chick-fil-A? Well, how about D.C’s very own Roaming Rooster? This summer, the nation went chicken sandwich crazy but amidst the chicken chaos, the local black-owned chicken restaurant has boomed with business since a tweet recommending Roaming Rooster went viral in late August.

After Popeyes ran out of ammo, the chicken war came to a cease-fire. However, the people were still hungry and Roaming Rooster was there to supply the chicken sandwiches the people craved; business tripled. The restaurant is owned by Michael Habtemariam, his brother, Biniyam Habtemariam, and sister-in-law, Hareg Mesfin. Roaming Rooster hasn’t always been as successful. The Habtemariam brothers first started their food business with a humble Halal food truck. Today they not only own a restaurant but have four Roaming Rooster food trucks.

The Habtemariam brothers’ love for cooking runs in the family. Their father, who lost his left hand after a plane crash, enjoys cooking too. However, due to his disability, the boys had to pick up the slack in the kitchen. They learned to appreciate the craft of cooking and although they were born into an Ethiopian family, they learned to cook a variety of dishes like Indian, vegetarian, and American. Before the brothers worked for themselves, they took up jobs in other restaurants like McDonald’s.

Roaming Rooster may not be a fast-food chain, but since the chicken war ended they’ve been reaping the benefits and supplying D.C. with their tasty chicken sandwich. The Roaming Rooster was once a hidden gem but is now a very popular spot in D.C.

“Since then, it’s been so hectic, I mean right now, we have people lining up outside the door,” Habtemariam told MSN News. “It’s very exciting.”

But with a great number of hungry customers comes great responsibility. With the restaurant open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, the Habtemariam brothers have been swamped. According to MSN News, they work between 15 and 16 hours a day. During the lunch rush, there are at least 30 people waiting outside the door.

To keep their restaurant and their food trucks from being overwhelmed by clients, the Habtemariam brothers have had to call in reinforcements–i.e., family members. Their staff has grown from nine to 14 to accommodate their business’ success.

Christopher Edwards, father of killed children in Atlanta murder-suicide, speaks for 1st time

Christopher Edwards is speaking out for the first time after his ex-wife, Marsha Edwards, committed a murder/suicide that also claimed the life of his two adult children and rocked an affluent Atlanta community.

“The cards and prayers came from all over Georgia, not just Atlanta,” said Edwards chairman of the Atlanta Housing Authority board, on Tuesday, The AJC reports.

All eyes were on Edwards after he was left struggling to understand why his ex-wife Marsha Edwards fatally shot 24-year-old-year-old Christopher Jr. and 20-year-old Erin, before killing herself on Aug. 21.

He said the outpouring of love and cards, “…came in from the nation, and most recently, they have now been coming in from the world. You reached me, and I thank you so very much.”

The Edwards’ were an influential family in the Atlanta social circles. They were well-connected to Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and Christopher even worked as a digital content manager for the Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Film and Entertainment.

His sister Erin was student at Boston University, studying communications and had just completed a summer internship with NBC New York.

Marsha, earlier this year had earned the respect of her peers and was named by Women Works Media Group as Atlanta’s Most Powerful and Influential Women of 2019.

Marsha was also a surgical and medical equipment distributor. She was also an Atlanta socialite and involved in the Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill of America and the Camellia Rose Chapter of The Links.

Last month, police were called to Marsha’s home for a welfare check. There they found the 58-year-old’s body along with the deceased bodies of her children.

While Edwards didn’t allude to knowing what motive caused his ex to kill herself and their kids, he urged people to continue to do good and be of help to those in need.

“There are people in need and, as for my family, what they would say — and what we are going to do — is we continue,” Edwards said. “I would implore you, that all of us get on with the business of helping others. Of providing good service. That is what we are going to do. That is the business at hand today.”

Edwards also said that was the last time he would publicly comment on the matter.

Viola Davis snags new role as L’Oréal Ambassador

Viola Davis is proving that age ain’t nothing but a number.

The 54-year-old actress is flaunting good face as the new L’Oréal ambassador and making her own personal history having snagged her first ever beauty contract.

How’s that for grabbing hold of your dreams! With her box office successes on both the small and large screen including her most recently role of Michelle Obama in a proposed Showtime series, the Academy award winner is also a producer and co-partner in JuVee Productions an award winning artist-driven production company.

In announcing her new L’Oréal campaign, Davis admitted to having had low self-esteem for most of her life and now she hopes to breathe life into others who may not feel confident about their appearance, the Daily Mail reports.

‘I cannot lead with bulls–t’: Viola Davis demands more realistic portrayals of Black women in film

“As someone who is, self-proclaimed, “not a classic beauty”, my ultimate hope is that women out there are inspired by my image.”

Davis opened up about her early years in the entertainment business where she felt the weight of not fitting a certain form of “being pretty.”

“It almost felt like a prerequisite to success,” she said.

“In order to succeed, you had to meet these impossible standards. Now I am much more secure in how I am, but there was a time that I did feel those pressures and succumb to them to a degree,” she admits.

But Davis said she pushed on despite the lag in her career she experienced early on.

“The fact that I didn’t see immediate success in my career in the traditional sense forced me to develop a thick skin, and to rally my sense of self-worth time and time to keep auditioning, getting on stage and honing my craft.”

Still, she said she the rejection contributed to some low points in her life.

“I suffered from low self-esteem all my life, and it still does surface, albeit less frequently,” Davis revealed.

“When I exercise and stay committed to my routine, I really do find that my mental and physical condition is at its best.

Viola Davis on ‘Widows,’ MeToo and expressing her femininity

“I feel more confident, healthier and clear-headed. It does wonders for my self-esteem as a result,” she added.

Davis, a mother of one, said she’s “humbled” being a global ambassador for the beauty brand.

“I hope to convey that there is beauty to every age.

“Youthfulness is beauty in its most obvious sense, there’s classical beauty, but with age and experience comes confidence – and there is nothing more beautiful to radiate than that,” she said.

Hurricane Dorian Aftermath: Two women lead a mission to save lives and rebuild the Bahamas

Lia Head is on a mission. After the devastation of Hurricane Dorian ravaged her home country last week she sprang into action.

With a network of support staff, she and her fellow organizer Gina Knowles, galvanized donations through their HeadKnowles Foundation which they launched in 2015 in response to the aftermath of category four Hurricane Joaquin. The two determined women were able to bring much-needed help to families in the central and southern Bahamas in the aftermath of Joaquin and are steadfastly trying to do the same after witnessing the catastrophe left by Dorian.

Hurricane Dorian pummeled Abaco and Grand Bahama Islands for two days, with 30 inches of rain, storm surges as high as 23 feet in some areas and 200 mile per hour winds.

The Red Cross says more than 13,000 homes – nearly half the number on those two islands – were damaged or completely destroyed.

Head admits that the aftermath of Dorian is different leaving thousands of people missing, entire neighborhoods destroyed, homes and businesses obliterated, shipping containers and boats hurled inland. Some airports are completely under water.

“This was an apocalyptic event of epic proportion,” Head told theGrio. “Entire swaths of our island have been swallowed by the ocean.”

READ MORE: Hurricane Dorian waves brings in bricks of cocaine at Florida beaches

Kim Mullins, a resident of Grand Bahama Island, told GMA she lived through Hurricane Floyd in 1999, Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne in 2004, Hurricane Wilma in 2005, Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and Hurricane Irma in 2017. In her extensive experience, Hurricane Dorian is the most menacing beast yet.

Setting up a base of operation in Ft. Lauderdale, Head worked tirelessly to direct a group of 12 committed volunteers to marshal resources like food, clothing and supplies to be sent to the Bahamas via a small fleet of planes and boats, even as she received harrowing reports about the fate of her own family.

Head’s sister was forced to move between three shelters and there were reports of a niece and nephew trapped in an attic during the storm’s 30-foot surge while she has also heard that her mother’s home was completely destroyed.

READ MORE: Deadly Hurricane Dorian parks itself over the Bahamas

“We’re the make-it-happen crew,” Head joked. “This is the worst I’ve ever seen and I’ve done a lot of work around the world. I was there day two [after the hurricane hit] in the air over the Abacos to get visuals and pictures.”

Head touched down in Nassau to begin working with World Central Kitchen with José Andrés to feed people who had lost everything.

Shauna Bain Smith is one of the HeadKNowles volunteers who flew from Los Angeles to Florida to help because she understood the scope of the devastation.

“We have 700 islands, but our total population is less than 400,000 souls, and we’re all actually connected through one degree,” Bain Smith told theGrio. “Someone is going to be related to someone who may have perished or lost everything. Islands only have so many resources. We all grew up together.”

And that’s why Head wants people to understand that evacuating the island wasn’t an option for many people and most did what the government told them to do.

READ MORE: Bahamas evacuees, fleeing Dorian’s devastation, forced off ferry headed to Florida

“When you live on an island and you already don’t have many resources, you can not evacuate,” she said. “You can’t purchase a plane ticket. You don’t have access to a boat. You don’t have relatives with means where you can go stay. They didn’t have the option of evacuation. You don’t have the same range of options.”

Now, it’s time for the most heartbreaking work as the water continues to recede and reveal all that has been lost.

Bahamas Health Minister Duane Sands announced on Monday that the official death toll from Dorian had risen to 50. According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, 42 bodies have been found on Abacos. The other eight bodies were found in Grand Bahama.

“The body count is ridiculous,” Head said solemnly. “The water is receding and now we’re seeing bodies. The death toll is far more than is being reported. People are on the ground are seeing the death count.”

Head says victims need food, water and other essentials as well as building materials and gas for the planes and boats that are transporting supplies to the islands.

To help with relief efforts, the HeadKnowles Foundation has set up an Amazon Wish List and a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for families and to support the rebuilding efforts.

Regina King’s Son Speaks on His Bond With His Mother: “She’s a Supermom”

Throughout her career, Regina King has earned the respect of many, including her 23-year-old son, Ian Alexander, Jr.

While attending the Golden Globe Awards this year, Ian admitted that his mother is deserving of the world. In addition to that, Ian revealed that he appreciates the time he gets to spend with his mother while working around her busy schedule.

“She’s just a super mom, really,” he told E! News correspondent Ryan Seacrest on the Golden Globes’ red carpet. “She doesn’t really let bad workdays or anything come back and ruin the time that we have, so it’s really awesome to have a mother that…I can enjoy spending time with and all that.”

Elsewhere during the red carpet conversation, Ian spoke on the importance of the Time’s Up! movement and fighting for equality amongst men and women of today. “Time’s up. Just for women having equality and safety in the workplace, and all individuals,” Ian added. “So, that’s really important to me, especially having a powerful woman…they rule the world.”

Back in 2011, Regina spoke with Essence regarding her adoration for her son. During their conversation, the If Beale Street Could Talk actress said that becoming a mother taught her the meaning of unconditional love. “I get emotional because my son is an amazing young man, and it took me to be a mother for me to realize how incredible of a woman she (my mother) is,” she said.

Regina continued, “You don’t know what unconditional love is. You may say you do, but if you don’t have a child, you don’t know what that is. But when you experience it, it is the most fulfilling ever. So, that is the greatest part about me. Being a mom to Ian.”

In other Regina King-related news, the 48-year-old actress won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk.

America vows to ‘never forget’ 9/11, 18 years later

Americans commemorated 9/11 with solemn ceremonies and vows Wednesday to “never forget” 18 years after the deadliest terror attacks on American soil.

A crowd of victims’ relatives assembled at ground zero, where the observance began Wednesday with a moment of silence and tolling bells at 8:46 a.m. — the moment when a hijacked plane slammed into the World Trade Center’s north tower.

“As long as the city will gift us this moment, I will be here,” Margie Miller said at the ground zero ceremony, which she attends every year. She lost her husband, Joel.

“Because I feel like if we don’t come, they don’t need to do it. And I want people to remember,” said Miller, of Baldwin, on Long Island. After so many years of anniversaries, she has come to know other victims’ relatives, and to appreciate being with them.

“There’s smiles in between the tears that say we didn’t do this journey on our own. That we were here for each other. And that’s the piece that I think we get from being here,” she said.

President Donald Trump was expected to join an observance at the Pentagon. Vice President Mike Pence was scheduled to speak at the third attack site, near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Former President George W. Bush, the commander-in-chief at the time of the 2001 attacks, was due at an afternoon wreath-laying at the Pentagon.

The nation is still grappling with the aftermath of 9/11 at ground zero, in Congress and beyond. The attacks’ aftermath is visible from airport security checkpoints to Afghanistan. A rocket exploded at the U.S. embassy as the anniversary began in Afghanistan, where a post-9/11 invasion has become America’s longest war.

The anniversary ceremonies center on remembering the nearly 3,000 people killed when hijacked planes rammed into the trade center, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville on Sept. 11, 2001. All those victims’ names are read aloud at the ground zero ceremony.
But there has been growing awareness in recent years of the suffering of another group of people tied to the tragedy: firefighters, police and others who died or fell ill after exposure to the wreckage and the toxins unleashed in it.

While research continues into whether those illnesses are tied to 9/11 toxins, a victims compensation fund for people with potentially Sept. 11-related health problems has awarded more than $5.5 billion so far. Over 51,000 people have applied.

After years of legislative gridlock, dwindling money in the fund and fervent activism by ailing first responders and their advocates, Congress this summer made sure the fund won’t run dry . Trump, a Republican and a New Yorker who was in the city on 9/11, signed the measure in July.

The sick gained new recognition this year at the memorial plaza at ground zero, where the new 9/11 Memorial Glade was dedicated this spring.

The tribute features six large stacks of granite inlaid with salvaged trade center steel, with a dedication “to those whose actions in our time of need led to their injury, sickness, and death.” No one is named specifically.

Some 9/11 memorials elsewhere already included sickened rescue, recovery and cleanup workers, and there is a remembrance wall entirely focused on them in Nesconset, on Long Island. But those who fell ill or were injured, and their families, say having a tribute at ground zero carries special significance.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon announced Monday that its 9/11 memorial will close next week for electrical and lighting work. The project, expected to take until late May, includes repairs to lighting glitches in the shallow reflecting pools under the memorial benches.
Sept. 11 is known not only as a day for remembrance and patriotism, but also as a day of service. People around the country continue to volunteer at food banks, schools, home-building projects, park cleanups and other charitable endeavors on and near the anniversary.

NFL star Antonio Brown accused of rape by former trainer

Newly minted New England Patriots’ player Antonio Brown is after his former trainer accused the star wide receiver of rape.

Tick, tock: OBJ plans to keep wearing lavish watch in games

In an explosive report that unfolded on Tuesday in The New York Times a woman identified as Britney Taylor filed a federal lawsuit alleging that several sexual assault incidents involving Brown took place between June 2017 and May 2018.

According to the lawsuit, Taylor outlined at least three separate occasions where she said Brown assaulted and raped her.

Taylor reportedly met Brown during her tenure as a student at Central Michigan, where they both attended. When she graduated, she claims Brown hired her to be his personal trainer.

Taylor, a gymnast, alleged that Brown sexually assault her during a June 2017 training session. She said he kissed her without consent and then exposed himself. Also, during the same month, Taylor claims Brown allegedly masturbated behind her and then ejaculated on her back, according to the outlet.

Then on May 20, 2018, Taylor alleges that Brown raped her by forcing her onto a bed and pushing her face into a mattress.

Brown’s attorney Darren Heitner released a statement saying that allegations are false and Brown denies “each and every allegation.”

“He will pursue all legal remedies to not only clear his name, but to also protect other professional athletes against false accusations,” Heitner said.

Crown also claimed that the relationship between him and Taylor was “consensual.”

Heitner also said Taylor wanted Brown to invest $1.6 million dollars into a business and when he refused, the working relationship went south.

The shocking news came out just hours after Brown signed a $15 million contract with the Patriots, coupled with a $9 million signing bonus.

Jury awards $11.4M in racial bias case against Michigan for ‘mammy’ slurs

While Brown has not yet been criminally charged, the Patriots team released the following statement, according to Masslive:

We are aware of the civil lawsuit that was filed earlier today against Antonio Brown, as well as the response by Antonio’s representatives. We take these allegations very seriously. Under no circumstance does this organization condone sexual violence or assault. The league has informed us that they will be investigating. We will have no further comment while that investigation takes place.”

Taylor is seeking unspecified damages.

FASHION WEEK: Big Sean, Halsey, Migos rock Rihanna’s lingerie show

Big Sean, A$ap Ferg, Halsey and Migos rocked Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty crowd Tuesday from a color-saturated stage at the Barclays Center as Normani and Laverne Cox joined an army of supermodels and dancers in a showcase of her latest loungewear and lingerie.

But don’t look for her juicy new collection on social media, in a big way at least. The curated audience heavy on young influencers had their phones locked in cases for the New York Fashion Week show that was filmed for streaming Sept. 20 exclusively on Amazon Prime in more than 200 countries and territories.

Rule-breakers spent the rest of the evening posting blurry and dimly lit clips taken with sneaked-in phones.

Rihanna did right by her fans by putting her latest teddies and other lacy pieces immediately on sale at Amazon, and by setting up photo booths for her audience’s pleasure outside the Brooklyn stadium after the 40-minute show.

On stage, her white multilevel backdrop evoked a small city bathed in purple, yellow and red light. Her legion strutted and danced on platforms and in large windows as she dressed some of the biggest names in modeling, sisters Bella and Gigi Hadid included, harem style in looks of pink and yellow. She also enlisted 21 Savage as a model and Fat Joe and Tierra Whack to perform.

At one point during the show, a small simulated water pool center stage rippled as Migos moved. At another, the crowd threw up their arms as DJ Khaled instructed.

Plus-size model Paloma Elsesser joined the Hadids, Joan Small, Alek Wek and Cara Delevingne for Rihanna’s second fashion week foray of the fledgling brand, this collection for fall-winter. Like her models and dancers, her line ranges in sizes 32A-42H in bras and XS-3X for the rest of the body.

Among Rihanna’s guests were Kacey Musgraves, Kehlani, the pregnant Ashley Graham and Diplo. They joined others for photos ahead of the performance.
Nobody does fashion week quite like Rihanna.

Jury awards $11.4M in racial bias case against Michigan for ‘mammy’ slurs

A jury has awarded $11.4 million to a black couple who filed a discrimination lawsuit against the Michigan Department of Corrections.

Attorney Jon Marko says Lisa Griffey was a probation officer who was racially harassed by white co-workers. She says they called her “mammy” and the “black one.”

Marko says her husband, Cedric Griffey, who was a deputy prison warden, was retaliated against because of his wife’s legal challenge. A Genesee County jury found Lisa Griffey was subjected to a hostile work environment and suffered an adverse employment action because of her race.

The jury on Monday said Cedric Griffey also suffered. The trial lasted six weeks.
The attorney general’s office, which defended the Corrections Department at trial, says an appeal is likely.

Demo Day celebrates student entrepreneurship

On Friday, student startups from this year’s MIT delta v accelerator presented their companies to a packed audience at Kresge Auditorium, in a celebration of entrepreneurship.

The entrepreneurs still have much work to do, and they each took very different paths to the stage, but the event, known as delta v’s Demo Day, was an opportunity to recognize the progress they’ve made so far.

“Today is my favorite day of the year,” said Bill Aulet, managing director of the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship, in his opening remarks. “This is a culmination of what happens at MIT in the field of entrepreneurship. There’s so many different resources and things going on, but today you see the best of the best from all those different places. You should celebrate the people, and you should save the programs you have, because these companies are going to do amazing things.”

In total, students from 24 startups made presentations, noting key milestones toward business growth to boisterous applause. This summer’s delta v program included 100 entrepreneurs who worked on their startups full time between June and September from either the Trust Center on campus or MIT’s New York City Summer Startup Studio. In addition to work and lab space, the startups also received equity-free funding, coaching and mentorship, and other support from the Institute.

This year’s group of startups included a virtual care clinic to help patients manage chronic conditions; an online community to help landlords and tenants fill apartment rentals; a “smart” inhaler that helps users improve adherence and their technique when using the device; a sewage treatment provider with a system that turns fecal sludge into electricity while cleaning the water; an online platform to match parents with underutilized childcare centers for last minute placements; an app that lets fans play fantasy sports during games; a robotic bartender for work functions; and many others.

Most of the startups have already begun working with customers, and all of them have tested their ideas outside of the lab. Aulet noted that several delta v startups have gone on to become foundational companies with huge valuations, or been acquired by leaders in their industry, though he said he’s most proud of the learning and impact that comes from the program.

“But it’s not just about the exits; it’s about the way [these companies] impact the world,” Aulet told the audience. “Changing agriculture, changing health care, changing urban environments. That’s what we’re here to celebrate: these 100 people that will change the world and set a gold standard.”

A growing educational footprint

Now in its eighth year, delta v has supported 69 startups, many of which are still in operation. By pushing startup teams to learn from their target customers and build companies around those insights, the program aims to equip participants with entrepreneurial skills they can use throughout their careers. Indeed, even as it forces students out of the classroom, at its core delta v is an educational program.

“Delta v is a teaching apparatus around entrepreneurship, so that’s embedded in the scheduled activities every week,” says Rachel Basch, director of content for Abound Parenting, a startup with an app for parents to improve their children’s reading levels. “I don’t have a business background, so this has been really educational.”

Abound has already begun a pilot trial with more than 100 parents and is expecting a wider public launch later this month.

Karina Akib, co-founder of CaroCare, which provides in-home and virtual care to new families in the eight weeks postpartum, said the mock boards that delta v assigns to each startup helped her founding team test its ideas and prioritize each step toward building a customer base.

“Every month our board was super critical on what we needed to do next, what traction they wanted to see, and because our board was made up of people from the health care space and venture capital space — people who had done this before — they really pushed us to get more traction every month. They also forced us to focus. You needed to prove there was action and you could only do that by focusing on one thing.”

The guidance helped CaroCare launch a paid pilot in June. The company has delivered more than 50 hours of care to date and is hoping to expand in the coming months.

This was the third year the program included a group of startups from New York City, hosted by the venture capital firm Two Sigma Ventures. Seven teams worked from New York, creating an intimate environment that gave the entrepreneurs a close look at their peer startups.

“[The New York cohort] was super small, so we got to know each other really well,” says Andrey Biryuchinskiy, the co-founder of the online community for blue-collar workers called Hardworkers. “It was cool because a lot of the startups in NYC have already raised money, so it was amazing to learn from them and see different stages of startup life.”

Biryuchinskiy and his co-founder Vlad Shraybman have already conducted more than 100 interviews for market research, and Biryuchinskiy says the Hardworkers platform is adding more than 300 new members every month.

“A blessing to mankind”

This year’s event also featured a talk by Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker. Baker applauded the entrepreneurs and audience members for their passion and enthusiasm, and pointed out the great resources Massachusetts has to offer new companies, urging entrepreneurs to keep their businesses in the commonwealth.

“I’d be nuts if I stood in front of this audience and did not say that at some point!” Baker said to laughter.

In a more serious tone, Baker, who has attended several MIT events since becoming governor in 2015, emphasized the important role the Institute plays in translating innovation into impactful companies.

“MIT is a really blessing, and it’s not just a blessing to Cambridge, it’s not just a blessing to Massachusetts, it’s a blessing to mankind,” Baker said.

Overall, the event let participants celebrate the progress they’ve made so far and provided an example for other students considering embarking on their own entrepreneurial journeys. This year’s Demo Day kicked off MIT’s annual festival of entrepreneurship and innovation, t=0, which features entrepreneurial events for students across campus all week.

Aulet encouraged the students in the audience to believe in themselves and take the plunge into MIT’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

“Tonight is not just about the people presenting,” Aulet said. “It’s about you students. Because you have to be motivated and believe that you can be up on this stage. Because these people were in the audience one year ago.”

Deputy Executive Vice President Tony Sharon to retire after 20 years at MIT

Tony Sharon, who has served as deputy executive vice president since 2013, will retire from MIT at the end of the current calendar year, concluding 20 years of service to the Institute.

Executive Vice President and Treasurer Israel Ruiz announced the news today in a letter to MIT faculty and staff.

“Tony has been one of my closest and most trusted advisors,” Ruiz wrote. “He has created bridges and strengthened relationships across MIT, while partnering with me to lead our senior management team and oversee the operations of MIT’s administrative areas.”

“Tony has also been pivotal in attracting talent to a number of important leadership positions,” Ruiz added. “He has played a key role in building and mentoring the next generation of administrative leaders for the Institute.”

As deputy executive vice president, Sharon has worked closely with Ruiz to lead the internal operations of MIT’s central administrative units, with responsibility for areas including MIT Medical, Human Resources, Environmental Health and Safety, Sustainability, Campus Planning, Facilities, MIT Police, Information Systems and Technology, and Audit.

Sharon led the execution of the MIT2030 framework for capital projects, helping to balance new construction with renewal of older buildings and developing a staff to maintain these buildings for future generations of faculty and students. He helped guide an unprecedented period of capital renewal on campus, Ruiz noted in his letter, addressing deferred maintenance projects and advancing new dormitory construction for both undergraduate and graduate students.

“Every day, Tony Sharon proves it is somehow possible to combine a humble, gentle, easy-going manner with military precision and uncanny efficiency,” says President L. Rafael Reif. “As he has demonstrated over and over at MIT, Tony has a remarkable ability to get big things done while making everyone around him feel that they are vital to the team’s success. For his practical accomplishments and his personal example, we will always be in his debt.”

Sharon joined MIT in 1999, spending his first 14 years at Lincoln Laboratory, a federally funded R&D center managed by MIT for the Department of Defense. His first role at MIT was as research group leader of the 70-person Advanced Satellite Communications Engineering and Operations Group, which develops and tests satellite communications systems.

In 2003, Sharon became Lincoln Laboratory’s executive officer, with responsibility for strategic planning for internal operations and investments. From 2006 to 2013, he was Lincoln Laboratory’s assistant director for operations, serving as the chief operating officer for a facility with 3,600 employees on a 75-acre campus with 1.7 million square feet of research, fabrication, test, and evaluation facilities.

“Tony was a quick study when he arrived on campus in 2013,” Provost Martin Schmidt says. “He embraced MIT’s distinctive culture, figuring out how his work could complement and enhance that of MIT’s schools and academic departments. He was remarkably effective in these interactions, and I will miss having him as a colleague in these efforts.”

Before joining MIT, Sharon spent 25 years working for the United States Air Force.

“Someone asked how long I have been at MIT,” Sharon says. “When I answered ‘20 years,’ they remarked that I was fortunate to have had two professions — one in the Air Force, the second at MIT. I am deeply grateful that MIT gave me the opportunity to have two careers.”

Ruiz’s letter to faculty and staff noted that over the coming months, he will work to distribute Sharon’s portfolio of responsibilities across the organization.

Mother of two Florida boys who drowned in apartment complex pool, arrested

Wildline Joseph, the 23-year-old mother of two boys who drowned in a community pool together in a North Lauderdale Florida earlier this year, has been charged with aggravated manslaughter, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Ja’Kye Joseph, 6, and Branario Minto, 5, were the young brothers who together ventured out to the pool area in May in their apartment complex as their mother slept.

On Saturday, around 1a.m., Joseph was arrested and charged because she “failed to provide proper care and supervision for the brothers, which makes her responsible for their death,” Sgt Don Prichard told Fox News

The boys climbed a fence to get to the pool. When neighbors noticed the boys floating face down in the pool around 9:30 p.m, they and rushed to pull them out and give them aid, but it was too late, the Broward Sheriff’s Office reported.

In May, Joseph told  Local 10 News that one of her sons was learning how to swim but still didn’t know how.

“He was getting swimming lessons but he didn’t really make it. He thought he could swim but he cannot swim, and I think the brother tried to help him so he jumped in too,” Joseph said.

“I’m so sorry. If I was there I could have saved them on time,” she said.

READ MORE: Sen. Kamala Harris releases detailed plan to overhaul criminal justice system

Joseph’s boyfriend, John Lynn Jr., was also arrested on the same charges two days prior.

Back in June, the Department of Children and Families released a report revealing that the mother, grandmother and great-grandmother were all inside the home when the boys left out.

The mother was also reportedly investigated more than a dozen times for various reasons relating to child neglect. Between 2015 and 2018, there were at least six reports of abuse that the Department of Child and Family Services reportedly investigated.

Two days before the boys died there reportedly was a seventh report, according to the outlet.

“The children were assessed to be safe and no additional service needs were indicated,” the sheriff’s office said.

Why Gabrielle Union says Dwyane Wade won’t let ‘old white man’ Santa to take credit for Christmas presents

We’re not saying that Dwyane Wade is The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, but his kids might!

Gabrielle Union gives good face wearing a dress with Dwyane Wade’s face all over it

While many families bask in the joy of allowing their kids to think Santa Claus in sneaking in toys and gifts during Christmas, Gabrielle Union says her husband isn’t on board with allowing Santa to get props for giving out presents, according to PEOPLE.

Union, 46, interviewed talk-show host and new mom Tamron Hall for O, The Oprah Magazine and explained that Wade is all bah humbug about the Santa thing.

“I’ll say to my husband, ‘Let’s tell the kids their Christmas gifts are from Santa.’ And my husband is like, ‘There’s no way in hell I’m letting these kids think that old white man is sneaking into our house and doing anything for them,’” says the America’s Got Talent judge.

“Because he didn’t grow up believing in Santa Claus.”

Passing down family traditions can sometimes be a double-edged sword as seen with Union’s advocacy for her happy tradition while Wade is not with the little white lies.

“We have these conversations when it comes to raising our children about where to draw the line between fantasy and ‘Hey, that’s not how life works,’ ” she adds.

The two have a 10-month-old daughter Kaavia James. Wade also has three sons Xavier Zechariah, 5½, Zion Malachi Airamis, 12, and Zaire Blessing Dwyane, 17 and he’s guardian to nephew Dahveon.

Hall who has only been a mom for four months to baby Moses, said she’s planning to have a layered conversation about this type of debate on her new show which premiered on Monday.

“Modern parenting is especially difficult for parents of color” because “we have to talk about not only ‘Are we gonna say Santa exists,’ but also ‘Is Santa Black?’” Hall said.

“Didn’t matter what I looked like on the outside, inside, I was falling apart. I had worked since I was 14,” she explained.

Hall said that when she was fired, she started getting jobs offers trickling in. Among them was a call from Harvey Weinstein before she knew about the explosive rape allegations that have dogged him.

She said she took the meeting to see what would pan out.

“This is before he had been accused of what we now know is playing out on television and now in a courtroom,” she explained.

FASHION WEEK: LaQuan Smith brings sexy back with new collection

LaQuan Smith turned to cowboys and bikers for spring-summer inspiration, bringing a sexy edge to his designs at New York Fashion Week.

The designer made liberal use of animal prints, Western influences and unconventional cutouts.

There were pants reminiscent of riding chaps in a cow print with a cutout in the front and metallic snakeskin short shorts with a matching bandeau top under a snakeskin trench. Models wore black Western hats, transparent pointed-toe heels, cowboy boots and graphic tees saying, “I will not, not be rich” and “Jordan Smith Hoedown.”

“It’s all about female empowerment,” Smith said Sunday at his show. “One of my favorite films is ‘Showgirls,’ so I just wanted to pull just these different elements of just what sexy represents and what that looks like.”

Smith said he wants to promote “a strong sense of identity, which basically is just unapologetic.”

“Right now we are living in such a world where it’s sportswear — you put on a suit and white sneakers and that’s considered sportswear, which I’m OK with,” he said. “But I think as a designer right now in the market, I want to really bring back sexy and I just feel like that’s missing.”

Trevor Jackson, who co-stars in “grown-ish,” tried to help on that front during his first runway walk, donning a men’s blouse in a sheer tiger stripe design.

“This is kind of like, hoedown, kind of the style,” Jackson said. “I’m super excited. Everybody is so beautiful and the clothes are so dope and I can’t wait for the people to see it.”

Models Slick Woods, Halima Aden and Winnie Harlow also walked in the show.
Aden, who also walked for Smith last year, is a huge admirer.

“I love how he’s like, he still dresses me modestly but it’s young, it’s cool, it’s edgy,” said Aden, who is Muslim. “I always feel like a rock star.”

In ‘Dolemite Is My Name,’ a return to form for Eddie Murphy

It took Eddie Murphy more than a decade to get a movie made about Rudy Ray Moore. Judging by the response to the film at the Toronto International Film Festival, the wait was worth it.

“Dolemite Is My Name” drew some of the best reviews of Murphy’s career, following the film’s premiere over the weekend in Toronto.

It had been a while. Murphy’s last two leading performances — 2016’s “Mr. Church” and 2012’s “A Thousand Words” — were little seen and little loved.

But “Dolemite Is My Name” was a passion project for the 58-year-old comedian. He long ago met with Moore, who died in 2008 at the age of 81, to discuss making a movie about the comedian. Moore’s famous character — the straight-talking, kung fu-fighting pimp Dolemite — was his stand-up persona and star of the 1975 Blaxploitation classic “Dolemite.”

“I never let go of the idea. It was always something I thought could be a great movie. I had been sitting on the couch. I took some time to do nothing,” Murphy said in an interview. “It goes back to when Rudy was alive. I literally went to see him at a club. It just didn’t come together. And there was no Netflix back then.”

“Dolemite Is My Name,” directed by Craig Brewer (“Hustle & Flow”), will be released by Netflix in theaters Oct. 4 and begin streaming on Oct. 25. It’s penned by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who memorably wrote another tale about an inexpert filmmaker: “Ed Wood.”

“Dolemite Is My Name” chronicles the ramshackle, threadbare making of “Dolemite” with Wesley Snipes playing director D’Urville Martin. It’s a paean to low-budget moviemaking and a celebration of creating something out of nothing, outside a movie system that made scant room for African-American stories.

For Brewer, a Memphis, Tennessee, native, it’s a testament to the independent filmmaking of his youth.

“I came up in my career as a guerrilla filmmaker. You show up and you shoot. You don’t have permits. You don’t have professionals help you. You just have a bunch of other people like you who have a blind passion,” Brewer said. “Sometimes those passion projects turn into something wonderful even though they’re terrible.”

For “My Name Is Dolemite,” the reception in Toronto was electric — especially for a performance that for many recalled Murphy’s performances of the ’80s. During the standing ovation that followed the film’s premiere, cast member Keegan-Michael Key suggested the lengthy applause shouldn’t stop for Murphy. ”

We should just stand all night and clap for him,” Key said.

The film has helped kick off a comeback for Murphy. After years of working seldom if at all, Murphy is currently shooting a sequel to “Coming to America,” also with Brewer directing and Snipes co-starring. Later this year, the former “Saturday Night Live” castmember will host the show for the first time since 1984. And after years away from the stage, he’s plotting a return to stand-up, with a tour planned for next summer.

But before all that, Murphy was again performing stand-up, only as Rudy Ray Moore and outfitted in the costumes designed by Oscar-winner Ruth Carter for “My Name Is Dolemite.” The filmmakers recognized what a privileged sight they were watching.

“Eddie comes in as Rudy and he starts telling jokes. And like Eddie does, he goes completely off book. If something comes, he just rolls into it,” Brewer said. “Then he left and I turned to the audience and said, ‘Y’all, do you realize what just happened? I don’t think he’s done that in like years! Decades!'”

FASHION WEEK: Pyer Moss celebrates black culture with fashion and music

There was a huge choir that veered from stirring, soaring gospel, then spit verses from Cardi B and sang lines from Queen Latifah’s “U.N.I.T.Y.”; a spoken word artist who reminded the audience that rock ‘n’ roll was born because of a black, queer woman ; and a stunning collection of clothes that ran the gamut from casual chic to red carpet gowns, all modeled by black or brown faces.

“Sister,” Pyer Moss’ latest production for New York Fashion Week, was a brilliant, irreverent and joyous celebration of black culture, specifically black women — a show where even the colorful, eye-catching garments proved to be just part of the story its designer, Kerby Jean-Raymond, masterfully weaved together on Sunday night.

“The whole thing is really to recognize our worth, and us as black people, what we’ve contributed to what pop society is in America,” Jean-Raymond told The Associated Press after his show ended a little before midnight. “What I aim to do is to make disenfranchised people, black people, with this series and minorities and women, know and understand how important they are to this thing called America right now.”

The first sign that the Pyer Moss was going to be something out of the ordinary was its location: Miles from Manhattan, the upstart fashion house held court on Flatbush Avenue, at the Kings Theatre, a venue sitting in one of the more culturally rich black neighborhoods in Brooklyn, New York.

Once inside the ornate and refurbished venue, a runway was fashioned in front of the stage, and in between stood a piano — another hint that clothes would be merely part of the story Jean-Raymond planned to tell.

What followed was a production that borrowed from black music, the black church and other aspects of the culture to pay loving tribute to what African Americans have achieved. Before the show began, spoken word artist Casey Gerald noted the grim anniversary currently being marked worldwide — 400 years since the first enslaved Africans arrived in the United States.

But instead of sorrow, Gerald emphasized freedom and noted “we have come here to say we ain’t gonna grieve no more . we have come tonight to say you can’t hurt us no more.”
With that, The Pyer Moss Tabernacle Drip Choir Drenched in the Blood took to the stage and began to sing. Dressed in formal black against a white backdrop, it was the perfect complement to the designs that would grace the runway. Looks included a flowing white tunic with red trim and matching white pants; a brilliant yellow-gold gown with long, billowing sleeves, a skirt that flared at the bottom and a cut-out back; matching men’s and women’s leather outfits that recalled cowboy chic; and brilliant artwork emblazoned on casual outfits (“Stranger Things” star Caleb McLaughlin was one of the models, and wore one of the outfits from the new Reebok by Pyer Moss collection).

As captivating as the clothes were, they were hard to compete with the choir, which started slow and majestic, with a gospel song, then morphed to deliver snippets of popular works of contemporary black singers, from Anita Baker to Whitney Houston to Missy Elliott: the audience roared as the choir began to rap Elliott’s “The Rain,” and cheered when it later segued to Cardi B’s “Money,” and erupted as it went into Adina Howard’s “Freak Like Me.”
Jean-Raymond beamed about his choir afterward, and noted that he had wanted to have more than 100 members, but “the stage structure couldn’t hold all of our swag.”

Jean-Raymond said he chose the songs to pay tribute to the contributions of black women in culture, specifically music. He noted the often overlooked Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who is considered by many to be the rightful creator of rock ‘n’ roll.

“And I feel like black women are often erased from things, and I wanted to do this specifically for black women,” he said.

It may have been specifically for black women, but the entire audience — which included celebrities ranging from Fantasia to former NBA star Chris Bosh, former NFL star Victor Cruz and actress girlfriend Karrueche Tran, and singer Normani — erupted in applause as it was ending.

In the end, it was far more than a fashion show, which is what Jean-Raymond — who declared fashion shows boring and elitist — hoped to achieve.

“I look at this as an art project, and I think the success of it is bringing people closer to me than trying to assimilate into whatever else people are doing,” he said.
