Oakland Pays Unprecedented Tribute to CEO and Hometown Hero Bernard Tyson

“Don’t ask permission to help improve the lives of the people and communities you’ve pledged to serve. Instead, march through the doors of red tape, make bold moves, and usher in access for your communities to be served.” — Bernard Tyson, 1959-2019

If the measure of a man can be taken by the outpouring of genuine sorrow and respect once he is gone, then the late CEO of Kaiser Permanente, Bernard J. Tyson, was without question among the rarest of revered corporate leaders.

On Sunday morning, Tyson’s flag-draped casket was placed in the center of the palatial circular lobby of the Rotunda, one of the most impressive and distinctive spaces in the city of Oakland, as a steady stream of admirers filed past.

Some, like Raymond McGuire, Citi’s Global Head of Corporate and Investment Banking, had flown in from New York in time to pay his respects a day before Tyson’s invitation-only memorial service, which will take place this afternoon at none other than the new San Francisco home of the Oakland Warriors.

For McGuire, Tyson was more than a professional peer, he was a friend.

To others, he was a mentor and a boss. Asked what set Tyson apart as a leader, John Nelson, Kaiser’s vice president of communications, struggled to compose himself before answering. He spoke first of Tyson’s deep humanity, his sense of humor, and how “he loved to laugh and to make people laugh.”

But Nelson, who worked closely with Tyson for the last decade, went on to laud the CEO for his constancy in pressing the organization to live up to its mission, “and not just in a trite way,” Nelson pointed out, “in a real way. One of his broadest accomplishments is that it feels like public service to work at Kaiser Permanente.”

Great Speaker, Oakland Champion, and Jay-Z Fan

While Tyson was outspoken in his advocacy of making healthcare affordable, it was in part his affection for and commitment to the city of Oakland that led Kaiser to hold Sunday’s public viewing. It was an unprecedented gesture, and Nelson admits the team of about 20 volunteers wasn’t sure what to expect.

By Nelson’s estimate, about 2,000 people paid their respects, gently directed by a team of hostesses, all volunteers from Kaiser’s African American Professional Association, which Tyson helped launch several years ago.

Among the personal friends like McGuire, and colleagues like Nelson, were those who didn’t know Tyson. They only knew of him but were nonetheless moved to come to the Rotunda to pay their respects.

A local kid (Tyson hails from another Bay area city, Vallejo) who began working at Kaiser as an intern while pursuing his M.B.A. at Golden Gate University, he became the model smart, young black male who could start at the bottom and make it to the top. The fact that he did so without losing himself or his ties to the black community is a primary aspect of what many say set him apart.

“My favorite thing about Bernard was his authenticity and how comfortable he was with himself and how down to earth he was,” said Dr. Linda Oubre, president of Whittier College. “He believed not only in climbing up the ladder of success, but also made sure to pull up others with him. He was as comfortable giving a speech to corporate executives or playing Jay-Z at a business meeting.”

Oubre and her husband, Nate Oubre, a Kaiser executive, attended Harvard Business School with Tyson’s widow, Denise Bradley-Tyson, and have known him for almost 30 years. “Today’s repose was quintessential Bernard: warm, loving, calm, and respectful. It was beautiful to see so many people whose lives were touched by Bernard come together.”

Many of Kaiser’s 200,000 employees came. Some knew and worked with him during his more than 30-year career at the healthcare provider. Others only knew of him but, with heads bowed and in hushed tones, they expressed their appreciation for his work and their shock at his sudden death on November 10.

Tyson, who knew he had a heart condition, died in his sleep mere hours after speaking at Afrotech, which he attended with his family.

Paying Honor, Shedding Tears for Bernard Tyson

Patricia J. Titus is a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge who attended Stanford University as an undergraduate with Bradley-Tyson. A second marriage for both, the Tysons recently celebrated their 10th anniversary.

“A lot of our peers from Stanford are Kaiser doctors,” Titus noted. “They’re devastated. You expect the family to be devastated, but the reaction of the staff has been unprecedented.”

Without question, she added, Tyson made an indelible impact not only on his peers in corporate America, healthcare, and the nonprofit world, but also on average people—especially African Americans in California, where this native son is revered as much for being a hometown hero as a giant in business.

“Today’s ceremony was done with such excellence,” Titus said. “It was very befitting a man of his stature.

“It was important for me to be here,” she added, “and not just as a friend. He took his job seriously and he did so much good. It’s important to pay honor to whom honor is due.”

JAY-Z is hot with Colin Kaepernick for not ‘playing ball’ on NFL’s terms

Once again, the NFL is  pissed with Colin Kaepernick.

READ MORE: As Jay-Z is reportedly linked to Kaepernick’s NFL workout, some issues with the league surface

Many people had concerns about whether or not the NFL’s workout offer was a legit opportunity for the former quarterback to show his best moves in front of the league’s coaches. Even the principled quarterback had reservations about the gesture. And so when Saturday’s “opportunity” arrived, Kaep flipped the script and changed the location of his NFL workout from the Falcons facility to a local high school, in a move that gave him more control over the narrative.

That move didn’t sit well with the league, Sports Illustrated reports.

Earlier in the week, Kaepernick learned that the NFL has opened up an opportunity for him to be evaluated by teams at a private workout over the weekend. During this session, teams would be able to assess his readiness to play professionally once again.

But then questions surfaced over the legitimacy of the opportunity, after it was reported many of the team head coaches and scouts wouldn’t even be in attendance and no media was invited to capture the moment.

Also, JAY-Z’s name was raised as having a hand in opening up the chance for Kaepernick to be scoped out.

Initially the rapper received a ton of flack not just from fans but also from members of Kaepernick’s inner circle after it was announced that through his company Roc Nation, JAY-Z would be co-producing the Super Bowl Halftime show and also contribute to Inspire Change, a foundation the NFL started in response to public outrage over their mishandling of Kaepernick’s peaceful #TakeTheKnee protest.

Now a source revealed that JAY-Z is “disappointed with Colin’s actions and believes he turned a legitimate workout into a publicity stunt.”

Kaepernick told the league instead that he opted to move the workout to Charles R. Drew High School in Riverdale, Ga on Saturday. A handful of scouts were on hand. However, Hue Jackson, who was leading the first NFL workout, instead returned to the airport and didn’t attend.

“From the outset, Mr. Kaepernick requested a legitimate process and from the outset the NFL league office has not provided one,” his agent, Jeff Nalley, and attorney, Ben Meiselas, said in a statement.

“Most recently, the NFL has demanded that as a precondition to the workout, Mr. Kaepernick sign an unusual liability waiver that addresses employment-related issues and rejected the standard liability waiver from physical injury proposed by Mr. Kaepernick’s representatives.”

Mike Florio from Pro Foot Ball Talk, a site powered by NBC Sports believes that what makes this clause even more sinister is that if signed, it would have legal prohibited Kaepernick from ever addressing the collussion allegation in the courts again.

However journalist Mark Maske of the Washington Post, received a tip from an anonymous source from the NFL that contends that “[t]he employment clause in the waiver that the NFL wanted Colin Kaepernick to sign was related to potential worker’s compensation issues if he’d been injured and was not related to any of Kaepernick’s collusion-related claims, in the league’s view.”

READ MORE: Colin Kaepernick posts video of private workout session with Odell Beckham Jr.

The NFL has responded in a length post saying they were “disappointed” Kaepernick didn’t show up for the Falcons facility 2:30p.m. workout to show his football readiness.

Kaepernick even wore a “Kunte Kinte” shirt, alluding to the fact that he is not a slave who is willing to turn into a Toby.

We stan(d) for Kaep.

Hundreds gather to honor and celebrate Alexis Crawford’s life at her funeral

On Saturday, hundreds of people paid tribute to Alexis Crawford, the young Clark Atlanta University student who was killed earlier this month.

READ MORE: MISSING: Clark Atlanta student hasn’t been seen in almost a week

The funeral for Crawford was held nearly a week after her body was recovered, following the filing of a missing person’s report by her family members.

Crawford, 21, was killed allegedly by her roommate, Jordyn Jones, and the roommate’s boyfriend Barron Brantley. Jones was reportedly Crawford’s best friend, and both suspects have since been arrested and charged with murder.

Family and friends gathered at Cornerstone Church in Athens and remembered Crawford as a “smart” and “bright” student who touched many lives, 11 Alive reports.

“Alexis Janae Crawford was just a quintessential college student from a small town,” the Rev. Markel Hutchins said. “She was smart and brilliant and beautiful.”

Kelly Girtz, the mayor of Athens where Crawford’s family lives, embraced the CAU student known as “Lex,” as everyone’s daughter.

“Alexis is every one of our daughters,” Girtz said. “Alexis is every one of our friends.”

Crawford’s friend Deajia Kershaw reminisced about how the two would dream about their future.

“We would just sit and just talk about how we are going to be so rich,” Kershaw said. “How we’re going to be so rich and have a big house. So, Lex, for the both us, I’m going to get that degree.”

Alexis’ sister Alexandria Crawford shared an intimate moment, which would be the last that two would share.

“I would like to share with you all, one of her last texts with me. On Monday, she texted ‘All of this is in God’s plan, it will work out for me. Praying it will,’” Alexis’ sister said at the funeral.

“I will never forget you. I remember your love forever, said Crawford’s friend Khadijah Grier, said.

“I can rest better now, knowing she’s in heaven,” her brother said.

Crawford and Jones reportedly got into a fight in their off-campus apartment, after they went out to buy alcohol. Warrant documents states that Brantley, Jones’ boyfriend, then got involved in the altercation.

“Something is broken and I’m going to fix it as chairman of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners,” Fulton County Commissioner Robb Pitts promised. “Crawford family, you have my word.”

“It hurts to the core,” said Dr. George French Jr. the president of Clark Atlanta University.

“But God still loves this family. God still has your back.”

One of Crawford’s friends also promised to start aa scholarship on her name.

Kanye West says that he’s the “Greatest artist that God has ever created”

On Sunday, famed Lakewood Church pastor Joel Osteen stood beside Kanye West and let him finish all his thoughts about his newfound affection for the Christian faith.

READ MORE: Kanye West brings Sunday Service to Dayton, Ohio in honor of mass shooting victims

The Jesus Is King rapper took to the pulpit at the megachurch in Houston for a powerhouse Sunday Service, PEOPLE reports.

West gave his personal dissertation about why he’s walking with Jesus now, and putting Hip-Hop on the back burner. And in West’s signature style, he was unapologetic about designating himself as the “Greatest artist that God has ever created.”

“I know that God’s been calling me for a long time and the devil’s been distracting me for a long time,” West confessed.

The rap artist also spoke candidly about his mental health issues.

“When I was in my lowest points, God was there with me and sending me visions and inspiring me, and I remember sitting in the hospital at UCLA after having a mental breakdown and there’s documentation of me drawing a church and [wanting to] start a church in the middle of Calabasas,” he added.

West continued, “all of that arrogance and cockiness that y’all have seen from me, God is now using for him,” he said.

“Because every time I stand up, I feel that I’m standing up and drawing a line in the sand and saying, ‘I’m here in service to God and no weapon formed against me shall prosper,’ ” he said.

“Jesus has won the victory. I told you about my arrogance and cockiness already. Now the greatest artist that God has ever created is now working for him,” he added.

West still, however, had some of that cockiness on deck when he silence someone off camera. He told them to stop talking while he was speaking because sometimes he gets a stream of consciousness, and needed to concentrate.

READ MORE: Kanye West performed two secret concerts for Harris County jail inmates

“I go into these streams of consciousness when I’m talking, and when you speaking in the middle of it, it distracts me,” he told someone. “I really appreciate the support, but I would like for everybody to be completely silent so I can let God flow through me as I speak to you guys today.”

Some 15,000 free tickets were distributed for the service which were gone in a record seven minutes.

The church itself welcomes some 50,000 people a week, Chron.com reports.

Kim Kardashian, West’s wife, was front and center smiling watching him from the audience.

“He reaches people that we will never reach in the church world,” Osteen told ABC after the service.

Solange Knowles hosts ‘Bridge-s’ art installation at the Getty Museum

Solange Knowles hosted an immersive art piece at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles on November 16 and 17 titled Bridge-s.

The art display featured singers in silk orange attire, musicians playing trombones and trumpets, and dancers who crafted human displays of art and moved through the crowd all in an effort to promote black unity.

The art piece is stated to have created an experience that spanned across the the Getty Museum’s open courtyard, according to The Guardian.

“Composing the music for this piece and directing it, alongside [choreographers] Gerard & Kelly, has been so fulfilling for me as I enter new planes as a composer and writer,” Knowles said of the performance installation. “I just thank you guys for allowing me the space to evolve and experiment and express new frontiers.”

The Los Angeles Times detailed the performance, which is described as a “transition through time,” was held in front of 400 people for the preview before being open to the general public on Saturday and Sunday.

The crowd for the preview included Tyler, the Creator and Blood Orange’s of Dev Hynes.

At the conclusion of the performance, Solange took a bow with the cast of 24 and spoke to the crowd, thanking them for “allowing me the space to evolve and experiment and express new frontiers.”

Previous art experiences from Solange included performances at Hammer Museum and in Marfa, Texas, and, in 2018, the singer performed live at New York’s Guggenheim Museum, where she brought in the assistance of Black dancers and musicians.

The art installation is a part of The Getty Research Institute’s effort to improve the representation and inclusion of Black personalities, resulting in $5 million to source more Black artists.

“We have long been inspired by the unique performances Solange has staged in various iconic art and architectural spaces, and her ability to both inhabit a locale, while simultaneously pushing its boundaries,” a spokesperson for the Getty Museum told The Guardian. “Her bridging of cultural worlds is especially full of potential at the Getty, a cultural center that stands within the diverse city of Los Angeles.”

Benny Emeri: Food Artist Bakes In Fashion And Pop Culture For Unique Desserts

BE Modern Man: Benny Emeri

Food artist; 31; Co-founder, EatGoodNYC

Twitter: @eatgoodnyc; Instagram: @eatgoodnyc

I am a food artist and the co-founder of EatGoodNYC, a speciality food art company in New York City. We are known for our unique dessert gifts and our even more unique style of incorporating pop culture, art, and fashion in the mix. In 2014, we created the selfie cookie and five years later, it’s a trend in the culinary world, including a show involving creating selfie cookies on the Food Network. Our clients not only are people looking for a unique gift or dessert, they are also looking for a unique experience and relationship through our customer service.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF IN LIFE?

Being a respected black entrepreneur means the world to me. Reading Black Enterprise since I was a teenager and seeing respected businessmen that looked like me inspired me to be the man I am today.

HOW HAVE YOU TURNED STRUGGLE INTO SUCCESS?

With EatGoodNYC being an online-based company, I had to find a way to attract clientele and show people my art. Aside from using social media to my advantage as a food artist, I would head to Manhattan from Queens to network and meet with people. My big break was when I took a selfie cupcake (our signature item) of [English model, actress, and singer] Cara Delevinge to an event she was part of. I couldn’t get into the event, so I waited outside with paparazzi for two hours just for the opportunity to maybe see her. When she finally came out, I pulled out my selfie cupcake and just waved at her. She looked at me and screamed, “WTF is that?!” She came over and asked to see it and if she could take a picture of it. The next day I woke up to that picture of her with the cupcake in Vogue, the Daily Mail, and other big publications.

WHO WAS YOUR GREATEST MALE ROLE MODEL AND WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM HIM?

Not really having a father figure around, and growing up in the era when rap moguls were a big thing in the early 2000s, I looked up to guys like Dame Dash, Jay Z, and P. Diddy. To this day, you can hear me referencing a Jay or Diddy rap line in my everyday experiences. My favorite line that I live by is from Jay Z: “All I got is dreams. Nobody else believes. Nobody else can see. Nobody else but me.” I remember telling someone I was going to start baking and they laughed. Honestly, It didn’t even affect me because I saw the vision; I always knew I was going to be here.

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

A Brooklyn poet once said, “Keep low and keep firing.” In my head, that means keep focused and turn these crazy dreams into reality.

HOW ARE YOU PAYING IT FORWARD TO SUPPORT OTHER BLACK MALES?

I’m paying it forward through open communication and always lending a hand, by being always willing to help anyone no matter how big or small the task may be. I have a special place in my heart for my people, because I know firsthand how hard it is to acquire certain opportunities and experiences.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE MANHOOD?

I’m replacing the word “manhood” with “adulthood,” because I try not to hold men and women to different standards on account of their gender. Adulthood to me is about taking responsibility for your own actions and decisions and taking control of your destiny in a manner befitting you and those who have a stake in your decisions. Adulthood is knowing it’s not always about you, and you must take responsibility for making society better around you.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT BEING A BLACK MAN?

We the sh*t!!! Pardon my French, but we are the most stereotyped and the most feared, and with the chips against us we thrive and show the world how great we are. You give us the ghettos and we create hip-hop, you give us a ball and we take over every major sport. That’s what we do!

Will.i.am says racist flight attendant had police waiting on his arrival

Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am said he and members of his team were victims of a flight attendant’s racism.

Will.i.am and his crew were on board a flight when the police were called on them.

The “Boom Boom Pow” musician would head to Twitter to express his feelings toward the incident. He detailed what occurred on the Qantas flight that was scheduled to travel from Brisbane to Sydney.

CNN detailed will.i.am was wearing noise-canceling headphones when an announcement as made to put away electronics, including laptops. He did not hear the announcement due to his headphones and had his computer out, which led to the encounter.

Will.i.am was asked about the laptop by the flight attendant directly, and though he put the computer away, the police were still called and waiting on his arrival.

According to the New York Daily News, will.i.am. stated the flight attendant also gave another person of color a “hard time” during the duration of the flight, and was rude to him in their interaction. The flight attendant allegedly told will.i.am that he had two minutes to put the device away or be met with consequences.

The artist stated he was “pulled away” and “intimidated” by five officers when he landed. He was eventually released by officers after a fellow passenger corroborated what occurred during the flight. The passenger would describe the interaction with the flight attendant as “out of control.”

“I was intimidated by 5 police officers when I landed…for what? I put away my laptop when she asked…why would she feel threatened by me to call the police? What did I do wrong? I wasn’t out of hand.. I was polite & did what she asked… now you’re asking me to take abuse?” will.i.am. tweeted.

“I was on the same flight and couldn’t believe the appalling behaviour of the flight attendant. My apologies on behalf of Australia,” fellow passenger Kate Selway tweeted, according to the Daily News.

Gospel Hip-Hop Artist Lecrae Invests in Audio Mixing Company MXD

The hip-hop world continues to get technical. According to The Source, gospel hip-hop artist Lecrae Devaughn Moore has invested in an audio mixing company.

The artist/businessman has invested in a company called MXD. MXD was started by Jacob “Biz” Morris, a Grammy Award-winning engineer and audio mixer. MXD allows independent artists, A&Rs, producers, podcasters, film composers, and just about any other type of creator to upload their tracks to the website and through a variety of costs and services, receive a professionally mixed recording in 48 hours or less. The price of the lowest package for a single track costs just $95.

“We’re in a time in history where technology is providing solutions for nearly every field. The entertainment world needs these solutions and I’m committed to making sure they are affordable and accessible,” says Lecrae, as quoted on Gospel Music Association’s website.

“Before MXD my inbox was flooded with requests for services, but at rates I couldn’t commit to,” explains Morris. He shared the number of direct messages and emails requesting audio engineering services with Lecrae, who introduced him to Oust founder Dan Duncan to help create a solution. Through the Oust Labs Accelerator and startup studio program, Morris went from ideation to execution within three months. Morris says Oust’s support has been instrumental in launching his brand. “Their team pushes the boundaries on creativity,” he said. ”Oust’s branding is amazing and the team is phenomenal!”

“Building a record label from the ground up has given me a deeper appreciation for what it takes to put out your music independently,” explains Lecrae. “Although I’m now partnered with a major label, I started out as an indie artist and still run an independent label. I wish technology like MXD was available when I started out.”

Lecrae is the president, co-owner, and co-founder of the independent record label Reach Records. Lecrae has received nominations for Artist of the Year at the 43rd, 44th, 45th, and won the award at the 46th GMA Dove Awards. He was also nominated for a BET Award for Best Gospel Artist in 2013 and in 2015, became the first hip-hop artist to win that award.

“Ashley is a curator who has demonstrated incisive and intersectional thinking about contemporary artistic practice,” Nancy Spector, the Guggenheim’s artistic director and chief curator, said in a statement. “Her work complements the Guggenheim’s mission to present the art of today, which we understand as a deep and expansive view of art history.”

The New York Times said James served as Mellon Curatorial Fellow in the Museum of Modern Art’s drawings and prints department, focusing on artists Adrian Piper and Charles White. She also previously worked at the Studio Museum in Harlem and Yale University Art Gallery. She will receive a Ph.D. from Yale in English Literature, African-American Studies and women’s gender and sexuality studies this coming spring.

“I am eager to begin work with my colleagues to develop new research, explore new ideas for exhibitions, programs and publications and continue to expand and shape such a vital collection,” James said in statement.

The hire of James follows an art show curated by Chaédria LaBouvier, which made her the first Black woman to curate a solo exhibition in the history of the Guggenheim. Prior to the solo exhibition, Nigerian curator Okwui Enwezor contributed to a group exhibition of African photography in 1996.

Former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg says ‘I Was Wrong’ for stop-and-frisk policy

Former New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg is currently planning his Democratic presidential run and looking to get ahead of detractors by apologizing for his support of the “stop-and-frisk” strategy, employed by the New York Police Department.

The strategy was supported for a decade by Bloomberg and led to the stopping of numerous Black and Latino citizens across the city.

In a speech, the first since expressing his interest as a presidental candidate, Bloomberg stated “I was wrong” and “I am sorry” to potential supporters.

Bloomberg went on to say that he understands he “can’t change history,” and “I apologize” to anyone that was wrongly stopped as a part of the policing efforts.

The New York Times cites the 77-year-old billionaire publicly backtracked on a component of his mayoral tenure that gained him the most notability.

The speech occurred at the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn, a location that was considered to be one of the targeted communities, largely African-American, for the policing that was impacted by the strategy.

CNBC details the tactic was enacted in 2002, the same year Bloomberg took over as mayor. In the “stop-and-frisk” strategy, the NYPD would target those who they had reasonable suspicion of breaking the law. Results of the practice did lead to weapons being confiscated, but also a greater number of innocent residents stopped for no reason.

Prior to this Sunday’s apology, Bloomberg was considered to be stubborn in his defense of the practice during his runs for mayor. He would also stand by the efforts during a 2013 court case, which ruled he violated the constitutional rights of minorities.

The apology from Bloomberg was stated to be an effort to regain the trust of Black and Latino communities.

The practices were found to be humiliating and degrading, and were a central focus of the  Mayor Bill de Blasio‘s run for office.

Adriel Hilton: Higher Education Administrator Reaches, Teaches And Mentors Students

BE Modern Man: Adriel Hilton

Higher education administrator; 37; Dean of Students and Diversity Officer, Seton Hill University, Greensburg, Pa.

Instagram: @aahilton

I currently serve as dean of students and diversity officer at Seton Hill University. I have held similar roles as an education administrator at several other higher educational institutions where I have worked to improve diversity. Perhaps most impactful is the work I have done to promote student success and awareness of the plethora of opportunities available to students to enhance their educational experience. I take pride in the work I have been able to do on several campuses to increase access for students while also improving retention and graduation rates as a college administrator.

As a scholar-practitioner and a critical race theorist, I rely heavily on articles and books that speak to the experiences of minority students at colleges and universities (i.e. Minority Serving Institutions or Predominately White Institutions). In addition, I rely on the advice of mentors and sponsors who push me to be the best that I can be.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF IN LIFE?

I am most proud to be doing the work I am doing as a higher education administrator. As a resilient black male, I am blessed to be in a position to mentor and teach young men, particularly African American males, from my lived experiences. I want to help these students to avoid making the mistakes, personally and professionally, that I have witnessed; therefore, I pour into them my time and heart to show them they can and will achieve against the challenges they face.

HOW HAVE YOU TURNED STRUGGLE INTO SUCCESS?

Being considered a second-class citizen or a third-rate human being, and otherwise looked down upon as a black male in society causes one to build inner strength. I have had to position myself with key supporters in my life. I have turned struggles into successes by seeking their wisdom and advice but also having my wise counselors advising me to not ever give up.

I still hear their voices telling me, “No matter your situation, you are blessed” and also, “No matter what you are going through, this too shall pass.”

WHO WAS YOUR GREATEST MALE ROLE MODEL AND WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM HIM?

My greatest male role model is Dr. Howard L. Simmons, past executive director and associate director of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Dr. Simmons served as professor and chairperson of the Department of Advanced Studies, Leadership and Policy in the School of Education and Urban Studies at Morgan State University, where I earned my Ph.D. in Higher Education under his tutelage. Prior to joining the faculty at Morgan State University, Dr. Simmons was a tenured member of the faculty in the Division of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Arizona State University. I learned from Dr. Simmons how to effectively utilize research within my work and also the importance of mentorship. In reference to mentorship, Dr. Simmons was a firm believer in mentorship and passing on his knowledge and legacy to the next generation. He taught me to use my knowledge, skills, and abilities to impact students positively as a higher education administrator.

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

The best advice I have been given was from Dr. Fred A. Bonner, II, professor and endowed chair in educational leadership and counseling and founding executive director and chief scientist of the Minority Achievement, Creativity and High-Ability (MACH-III) Center at Prairie View A&M University. “Status will come as a result of a job well done,” he said. What I took from this was that if you do good work, accolades follow. Do not go searching for credit or accolades for they will come as a result of the work you have done.

HOW ARE YOU PAYING IT FORWARD TO SUPPORT OTHER BLACK MALES?

As a member of a Black social fraternity, a product of HBCUs and also as a member of several professional associations, I believe it is important to use whatever knowledge, skills, and abilities I have accumulated to achieve some measure of success and then to use that success to mentor young people, particularly African American men. Through my scholarship (books, articles, and op-eds), my goal is to empower students that they can achieve against almost any odds. Also, I assisted in launching a scholarship program at a previous university that allows deserving students to receive aid to assist in their educational pursuits. Therefore, I pay it forward by supporting other black males through mentorship and also through financial support for their educational pursuits.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE MANHOOD?

Manhood is complicated and simple at the same time. It is as difficult to define as love. I define manhood as maturity, persistence, the inner strength to endure, and the self-assurance to be able to laugh at yourself and still cry, empathetically, for others.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT BEING A BLACK MAN?

The unique perspective that my lived experience gives me as a black man has profoundly impacted my life. What I like most about being a black man is that we are resilient. I believe that’s what it takes to prevail against the odds, to rise above the challenges that many of us face in life; it helps us to be better. We need to push through our situations and to not [fall prey to] the imposter syndrome. We must be resilient.

Chase Consumer Banking CEO Thasunda Duckett Joins NIKE’s Board of Directors

Thasunda Duckett, CEO of Chase Consumer Banking, a division of JPMorgan Chase, has joined an exclusive club with her recent appointment to NIKE‘s board of directors. As such, she has become the only African American female C-suite executive to serve on the board of the $34.3 billion athletic footwear and apparel producer as well as a future member of the BLACK ENTERPRISE Registry of Corporate Directors, which identifies blacks among the corporate governance ranks of the nation’s largest publicly traded companies.

“Thasunda’s expertise in leading digital and physical transformation in retail banking will be invaluable in helping Nike further deepen consumer relationships,” Mark Parker, NIKE Chairman and CEO said in a released statement. “She is a dynamic and forward-thinking leader, and we are delighted that she has joined the board.”

Serving on its Corporate Responsibility, Sustainability and Governance Committee, Duckett joins three other African American members of NIKE’s board of directors: Registry members Peter B. Henry, Dean Emeritus of New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business and William R. Berkley Professor of Economics and Finance; John R. Thompson Jr., former head coach of Georgetown University’s basketball team and current board member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches; and John W. Rogers Jr., Chairman, Chief Investment Officer and Co-CEO of Ariel Investments L.L.C. (No. 1 on the BE ASSET MANAGERS List with $11.6 billion in assets under management).

By enlisting her for NIKE’s board of directors, the company gains access to the acumen of a business and financial dynamo dedicated to the development of platforms that promote financial health, wealth building, and economic inclusion. Duckett, 46, has oversight of a banking network with more than $800 billion in deposits and investments, 5,000-plus branches, 18,000 ATMs and 50,000 employees—including a phalanx of financial advisers—to meet the needs of over 23 million households throughout the country.

Prior to her current role, she was CEO of Chase Auto Finance, one of the top providers of auto financing with a portfolio of more than $80 billion in assets and relationships with 75% of U.S. franchised automotive dealers. Under her leadership, the division moved from No. 27 in the JD Power Dealer Financing Satisfaction Survey to the leader in Prime and Non-Prime. She expanded its dealer partnerships and launched Chase Auto Direct, its latest direct-to-consumer business.

One of her major thrusts has been her role as executive sponsor of the institution’s Advancing Black Pathways program to drive prosperity for African Americans while addressing nagging racial and economic barriers to wealth creation. To achieve this end, she has created partnerships with a range of influential companies, organizations, and leaders. “Opportunity is not distributed equally, but we all know that talent is. Being black and really focusing on this initiative, it really rings true,” she told BE earlier this year. “We know that the economic wealth gap facing black Americans is stark. We also know [about] the business gap, in terms of people of color owning businesses at the same rate as whites. That outcome would mean or result in 9 million more jobs and $300 billion in worker income. So Advancing Black Pathways is really focusing on expanding economic opportunity for black Americans.”

Due to her myriad of accomplishments, the graduate of University of Houston and Baylor University’s Hankamer School of Business, Duckett has been included on BLACK ENTERPRISE’s 300 Most Powerful Executives in Corporate America and Most Powerful Women in Corporate America rosters, respectively.

Lakeith Stanfield Isn’t Feeling Black Media Outlets

Get out! The unfairness from some media outlets causes some artists to give them the side-eye. According to Blavity, Lakeith Stanfield feels that some black media outlets are “anti-Black.”

In an Instagram post, the actor reveals, “It’s a fact that a lot of these platforms are usually or tend to be feeding grounds for negative reinforcement toward BLACK “nonconformists”. They bolster faux vanity and hold a white supremacists scope over black men and women often highlighting negative attributes and downplaying mind-expanding ones. They serve as bottomless coward consumption pits and digital, audio, or otherwise slave mentatilty museums. @ all you want”

He specifically called out The Shade Room, Lipstick Alley, The Breakfast Club, and WorldStar.

Although some celebrities agreed and liked his post, the words Stanfield wrote, did NOT get a pass from The Breakfast Club’s Charlemagne Tha God. For Stanfield’s post, he earned the illustrious “Donkey of the Day” from Charlemagne. “You can say any and everything about me. I’ve damn near heard it all about myself online. But what you won’t do is ever fix your lips to call one of my platforms, especially The Breakfast Club, anti-Black,” said Charlamagne.

He also said, “I’m not going to sit here and act like we’ve gotten it right all the time, because we haven’t. We’ve made plenty of mistakes on this radio. All that critique is fine. But, Lakeith Stanfield, don’t you ever fix your raggedy-ass mouth to call the author of Black Privilege – because I truly believe it is a privilege to be Black – anti-Black.”

Charlemagne also points out that Stanfield has been accused of not talking to black media on the red carpets and only interacting with white media outlets. Stating that if he chose to call out white media, it would hurt him in Hollywood circles.

But, Charlemagne concludes with, “This came from a place of love. Two takeaways I want to leave you with: One, be the change you want to see in media and stop acting like a damn buffoon in all your interviews. And two, don’t burn those Black bridges just because White folks in Hollywood sent you a boat, because history shows us what happens when White folks put Black folks on a boat.”

Study shows Blacks in New Jersey are arrested for weed more than whites

Black cannabis users in New Jersey can’t catch a break when it comes to being targeted by law enforcement.

NJ.com reports, that according to the American Civil Liberties Union, Blacks and whites may have similar engagement with adult use or recreational marijuana. However,  Black folks continue to be arrested for possession far more frequently than whites in New Jersey. The ACLU announced Friday that they are pushing lawmakers to legalize cannabis before the state legislative session ends in January.

READ MORE: How this Black woman cannabis entrepreneur is breaking down barriers in Michigan

“Legalization is about racial justice,” said Amol Sinha, executive director of the ACLU in New Jersey.

Despite growing public support for the legalized use of recreational marijuana, arrests in New Jersey have increased in recent years, according to data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In 2017, the state reportedly had more arrests of Blacks users of the plant, and at higher rates, than almost every other state.

The ACLU’s analysis targeted three counties: Salem, Ocean and Hunterdon, where Blacks were eleven times more likely to be arrested for possessing marijuana. In Salem County, Blacks were six times more likely to be arrested. Even worst is in Ocean, were they are seven times more likely to be targeted, harassed and hauled off to jail.

Back in March, top state lawmakers canceled a planned vote on a bill that would legalize recreational marijuana for adults 21 and older.

“We’ll be back at this,” state Senate President Stephen Sweeney, D-Gloucester, told reporters shortly after the vote was called off. “So anybody who thinks this is dead, they’re wrong.”

“This is an issue that’s not going away,” he added. “The legalization of adult-use marijuana will get passed in the state of New Jersey, one way or another.”

Lawmakers said they haven’t received enough support in the state Senate to pass the bill.

Sweeney admitted he “may have under-estimated the challenge of getting this passed.”

Black borrowers are struggling to repay student loan debt, here’s why

According to the Federal government, Black college students in cities such as Brooklyn and Chicago are drowning in student loan debt at higher numbers than white borrowers.

Matter fact, according to research economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, student loan debt weighs heavier on Black Americans, and the reason may not be all that surprising.

READ MORE: Morehouse creates fund to help eliminate student loan debt

The fact that Black Americans earn a relatively lower income that other racial groups is part of the problem, as they lack the money and resources to make payments, the Fed researchers said, per CBS News.

The data also noted that “Black college students either graduate or drop out with a higher loan bill than other racial groups,” the outlet writes.

“Borrowing rates are somewhat higher in areas with a majority of Black residents, at 23%, compared with 17% in Hispanic-majority ZIP codes and 14% in white-majority ZIP codes,” the Fed researchers wrote. “These differences are likely explained, in part, by income disparities, as lower-income students are more likely to need student loans to afford tuition.”

Here’s how the Fed data breaks down:

  • Students living in predominantly urban or Black areas have an average student loan balance of $37,000 or higher
  • Meanwhile, white student’s, on average, have a balance of $34,000
  • The data also suggests that 18% of Black borrowers are twice as likely to default on student loans compared to 9% of white borrowers

“Black graduates still earn less at their first post-graduate jobs compared to other races,” said Marcus Garrett, who hosts a podcast on how to eliminate debt. “Typically, African-American households have less median income,” he added. “Therefore, the children of these households would theoretically need to take on more school loan debt.”

And this is one of the main reasons why paying off student loans remains an uphill battle for Black Americans.

“It’s a Catch-22 to try to make additional payments when you’re already struggling to just make minimum payments,” Garrett said. “Yet, the main solution to paying off loan debt — beyond lowering the interest rate — is to make additional payments above the minimum payment whenever possible.”

Several Democratic presidential hopefuls have shared their vision for eliminating student loan debt, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, who has stated that if elected president she intends to cancel up to $50,000 in debt for over 40 million borrowers. Over the summer, Senator Bernie Sanders announced a bill that would eliminate all student loan debt.

Dr. Tony Evans becomes the first Black American to publish Study Bible

Renowned Dallas-based pastor Tony Evans has become the first Black American to publish a study bible and commentary.

After celebrating 50 years in public ministry, Evans released the two tomes in partnership with LifeWay, Christianheadlines.com reports. Evans is a celebrated theologian and pastor of Oak Cliff Fellowship, a predominantly Black nondenominational church. He is also the founder of The Urban Alternative.

“What I want to say to African Americans is if you see what’s really in the Bible, you can find yourself there,” he said in an exclusive interview with Religion News Service. “You don’t have to lose yourself to believe in Jesus. In fact, much of who we are is in Jesus.”

The Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship celebrated the release of the study bible and commentary with a gospel-star-studded celebration on Friday. Dubbed “Kingdom Legacy Live,” the event brought out the likes of musicians LeCrae and Kirk Franklin, who Evans is supporting in his boycott of the Dove awards after the gospel singer’s race-related comments were omitted from a recent broadcast of the annual ceremony.

Prior to the Kingdom Legacy Live event, Evans chopped it up with Religion News Service  about his new biblical volumes, during which he noted why it was vital for him to highlight the Black presence in scripture.

“Paying attention to context is extremely important if you want to accurately understand what the Bible is saying,” he wrote in the Bible’s opening instruction letter. “If you don’t pay attention to the context, you are in danger of trying to make the Bible say something that it doesn’t actually say.”

Evans added, “In fact, in Numbers 12, God judged Aaron and Miriam for their reaction of Moses’ African wife. So early on, God was dealing with racism and interracial marriage,” he told Christianity Today.

READ MORE: Did a Florida church not hire a pastor because he was Black?

The pastor, who was the first Black American to earn a doctorate in theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, noted that his Study Bible acknowledges the Black experience in the scriptures.

“In the lineage of Jesus are a number of people from the lineage of Ham. The lineage of Ham goes back to African people since he settled in Africa. We deal with the curse of Ham that was used to promote slavery in America and apartheid in South Africa,” he said. “That’s often not pointed out.”

Kanye West performed two secret concerts for Harris County jail inmates

Two days before Kanye West and his famed Sunday Service are slated to appear at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Texas, the rapper played two secret performances at the Harris County Jail on Friday.

More than 200 male inmates inside the 701 San Jacinto building got to #turnup to Ye’s gospel experience with his 100-member of the choir. The rapper then served up a second hour-long set inside the main Baker Street jail for a smaller group of women inmates, E! News reports.

“This is a mission, not a show,” West reportedly told his jailhouse audience.

Video of the performance has been shared online, which shows several inmates overcome with emotion as the Hip-Hop icon performs hits from his gospel-themed Jesus is King album.

On Sunday, West is taking his Sunday Service to Osteen’s Lakewood megachurch, and a source exclusively tells ET  that there will be two Ye-themed services. The first one will be during the morning  service. at 11:00 a.m. According the source, the service “will include a conversation between Joel and Kanye about overcoming adversity and his faith journey.” Then at 7:00 p.m., West’s Sunday Service will perform a free event, but attendees are required have an admission E-ticket only available through Ticketmaster, the report states.

There’s such a demand for tickets that, according to TMZ, scalpers have already copped a bunch of reserve tickets to sell for a quick buck. However, the outlet writes, “We’re told the tickets they have identified as being held by scalpers have been invalidated.”

West’s appearance at Osteen’s church in Houston on Sunday will be the first time that he will have ever spoken publicly about his salvation in front of a large audience. The Lakewood Church boasts about 52,000 people every week, according to the Christian Post, and millions tune in every Sunday to watch Osteen on TV.

It will also be the first time the musician and Osteen meet face-to-face. Yeezy’s wife, Kim Kardashian, is also expected to attend the service, fresh off her visit with death row inmate Rodney Reed.

The reality tv star has been lobbying to set Reed free, and according to TMZ, she met with him Friday in Livingston, TX while her hubby was rocking the jailhouse for inmates in Houston.

West wanted to visit Reed too but only legal visitation was permitted, and since Kardashian is a legal apprentice, she was allowed to chop it up with Reed about his controversial case. The make-up mogul was with the inmate when he received the exciting news that “ the highest court in Texas had issued a stay of execution and remanded the case back to the trial court for further consideration.”

As TheGrio previously reported, 51-year-old Reed had been set for lethal injection Wednesday evening for the 1996 killing of 19-year-old Stacey Stites. Prosecutors say he raped and strangled the teenager as she made her way to work at a supermarket in Bastrop, a rural community about 30 miles southeast of Austin.
