How Entrepreneurs Can Make the Most Out of Small Business Saturday

Small Business Saturday is a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities. A record number of shoppers are making plans to support their favorite businesses, as small business owners across the nation gear up for #ShopSmall.

When Small Business Saturday first began, incentives got people to come in and shop. But today, it has become a movement to support local businesses. Since 2011, Congress has designated a National Small Business Saturday, which is November 30 this year.

A One Day Shopping Event for Millions

Small Business Saturday was created by American Express in 2010, as a response to small business owners’ most pressing need; getting more customers. Held on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, Small Business Saturday helps rally communities nationwide.

NFIB data shows that, in 2015, restaurants and independent retailers saw $16.2 billion in spending during Small Business Saturday, a 14% increase from the $14.3 billion in sales during Small Business Saturday 2014. Fortune also reports that, in 2015, 95 million consumers participated in this event.

Since 2014, there have been more than 1.6 million new small businesses added to this one-day shopping event. For 2016, American Express has teamed up with basketball icon Shaquille O’Neal to encourage card members to Shop Small and get two times the rewards this holiday season. American Express, an official sponsor of the NBA and six of its teams, has also partnered with O’Neal, a four-time NBA champion, for the 2016-17 NBA season.

The Key to Small Business Saturday Success

Part of what helps make Small Business Saturday successful, in terms of getting consumers to #ShopSmall is a Small Business Saturday coalition of supporting organizations. Essentially, national, state, and local associations help coordinate #ShopSmall activities with merchants, consumers, and small business owners.

Another group that drives Small Business Saturday activities are the Neighborhood Champions, which is comprised of small businesses, associations, local Chambers of Commerce, and other community groups.

Small business owners can make the most of this day through social media. Your online presence, email marketing, and social media networks are great ways to target and connect with local consumers, through timely updates and compelling calls-to-action. Develop themes for your email templates and update your website and Facebook profile picture. To be part of the nationwide conversation, use the hashtags #SmallBizSat and #ShopSmall on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

It’s likely that many other small businesses in your community also rely on the holidays for a good chunk of income. So, see if you can partner with complementary stores or businesses to cross-promote each others’ goods or services, as suggested by the U.S. Small Business Administration. One example the SBA cites is that a cosmetic store and a hair salon might develop a cross-promotion, which offers a time-limited discount on makeup and hair coloring if the customer frequents both businesses.

Gabrielle Union shows she’s above ‘America’s Got Talent’ drama in precious family photo

Amid all the rumors, accusations and drama following Gabrielle Union‘s firing from popular NBC variety talent show America’s Got Talent, the actress showed fans that she has much to be thankful for.

On her Instagram account, Union posted pictures of her and her family, which include husband of five years and retired NBA baller Dwyane Wade, 12-year-old stepson Zion Malachi Airamis and daughter Kaavia James, a.k.a “Shady Baby.”

READ MORE: Dwyane Wade backs Gabrielle Union after she exits ‘America’s Got Talent’ over reported racial issues

The Wade family was all smiles in their Thanksgiving photos that Union captioned, “Grateful ❤❤❤ Happy Thanksgiving good people. To all the friends and family that have my back and all the friends and family I’ve never met who show love and support when everyone is looking and when no one is looking…All praise, gratitude and thankfulness.”

Union’s post came in the midst of a firestorm following her firing from America’s Got Talent last week. Rumors began to surface that the popular judge was let go for wearing hairstyles that were deemed “too Black” by producers, according to People. There were also reports that her firing came after she spoke out about a racist joke made by guest judge Jay Leno, which was later edited out of the show.

On Thanksgiving Eve, Union took to Twitter to thank fans for their continued support amid all the drama.

“So many tears, so much gratitude,” she tweeted on Wednesday night. “THANK YOU! Just when you feel lost, adrift, alone… you got me up off the ground. Humbled and thankful, forever.”

People also reported that she seemed to reference the America’s Got Talent fallout in an Instagram story video she posted of her and her husband working out.

Husband Dwyane Wade has also made his voice heard about his wife’s firing. He wrote a series of tweets coming to her defense.

“‘Men lie, Women lie, numbers don’t.’ Over this past year I’ve been approached by many people saying that my wife @itsgabrielleu is the main reason they’ve started watching #AGT or that they love her insight and sincerity on the show,” he tweeted. “So when i got the news that my wife was being fired—my first question was obviously why!? I am still waiting on a good answer to that question. But if anyone knows @itsgabrielleu or have heard of her you know she’s an advocate for our community and culture.”

Wade also praised his wife for standing up for the Black community and being a great example for their daughter.

READ MORE: Gabrielle Union leaving her post as judge on ‘America’s Got Talent’

“As proud as i were of her being selected as a judge on #AGT— I am even more proud of her standing up for what she stands for and that’s US,” he wrote. “So [cheers] to you @itsgabrielleu on not losing sight of the lessons we’ve talked about teaching our daughter and for kicking ass while you were on that platform. Number 1 judge on one of the biggest shows in the world.”

In a statement to People, an NBC spokesperson wrote, “America’s Got Talent has a long history of inclusivity and diversity in both our talent and the acts championed by the show. The judging and host line-up has been regularly refreshed over the years and that is one of the reasons for AGT’s enduring popularity. NBC and the producers take any issues on set seriously.”

10 Best Black Friday Deals That Will Make Great Gifts (2019)

3 Ways Small Business Owners Can Increase Sales This Black Friday

The most significant shopping time of the year has finally arrived! According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), approximately 165.3 million people plan to shop in stores and online from Thanksgiving to Black Friday to Small Business Saturday to Cyber Monday.

While many larger corporations can offer deeply discounted deals and increase profits throughout this time, small business owners can position themselves to do just as well. Here are a few easy but impactful ways:

1. Offer discounted products and services for Black Friday

Do you have a service packaged and ready to go? Or do you have a surplus of products? This time is a great time to review your inventory or offerings to see what services can be discounted but still increase your bottom line.

Offering gift cards is also a great way to increase revenues at this time. Consumers are expected to spend $27.5 billion on gift cards this holiday season, according to NRF. So why not offer them?

2. Create an email campaign to boost revenue

After you have determined what services you can offer, next, it is time to get the word out. Using free newsletter providers such as MailChimp, Constant Contact, and others are great ways for little to no cost to get your message to those who matter. Create catchy subject lines, use pictures that pop, and keep your words to a minimum to capture your readers’ attention.

3. Find more customers

While it is good to spread your net wide, this is not always advantageous when advertising. If you have operated your business for some time, you should have an understanding of who your customer base is. For instance, if young professionals are likely to purchase, then you should focus your advertising efforts on this group.

Take advantage of social media postings and ads to target these groups. Lastly, write in your target audience language! Capture their attention by focusing your advertising efforts specifically to their needs and what they are likely to respond to.

GoFundMe donations spike for SFA player after upset of Duke

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — The biggest winner in the aftermath of Stephen F. Austin’s shocking upset of No. 1 Duke might be the fundraising effort for the family of the player who hit the game-winning layup.

A thankful Nathan Bain was still in “disbelief” Wednesday — about the contributions more than his clutch basket.

Since the end of the game, the two-month-old GoFundMe page set up to help Bain’s family in the Bahamas rebuild from Hurricane Dorian damage had raised $88,281 and counting shortly after 7 p.m. EST Wednesday. It’s a massive spike from the roughly $2,000 it had raised before Tuesday night’s stunning result became the talk of college basketball.

To put that number in perspective, the fundraiser generated more in donations in less than 24 hours after the game than Stephen F. Austin pocketed from Duke for coming to Cameron Indoor Stadium and playing the game in the first place. SFA’s guarantee from the game was $85,000, a school spokesman said.

Bain said Wednesday the donation totals had “skyrocketed” when he checked the website several times after the game.

“I was just in disbelief at what basketball had done for my family,” the 6-foot-6, fifth-year senior guard told the Associated Press by phone. “It was truly a blessing.”

The initial fundraising goal of $25,000 was increased to $50,000 — only to have it, too, surpassed by early in the afternoon.

GoFundMe spokeswoman Aja Shepherd said the Bain family site was the second-most popular campaign Wednesday — surpassed only by one for victims of an earthquake in Albania that had killed at least 30 and injured more than 650 — with more than 1,500 donors from all 50 states giving an average of $36.

“I want them to know how much … we appreciate it, and how thankful we are that we’re alive,” Bain’s father, Norris Bain, a minister, told the AP. “As bad as it is, it could have been a lot worse.”

Norris Bain said the storm left more than 10 feet of water in the family’s single-story home in Freeport, Grand Bahama, and the house was “totally gutted” with none of their possessions recoverable.

The church he runs, the Tabernacle Baptist Church, had 5 feet of water inside and its affiliated K-12 school with an enrollment of about 800 had 4 feet of water and a hole in the roof caused by the Category 5 storm that hit the islands.

He said the roof has been fixed and enough repairs have been made to reopen the school, but among other issues, the phone system has not been fully repaired.

Dorian hammered the northern Abaco and Grand Bahama islands before giving a glancing blow to the southeastern United States. There were 67 confirmed deaths and 282 people were still missing as of late October along with $3.4 billion in losses for the Bahamas, according to a recent report.

“We just want to make sure we get the people around us taken care of at the church, at the school,” Nathan Bain said. “That’s really our main focus, to make sure everyone has a place to worship and to make sure the school is taken care of so these kids can get a proper education.”

Bain scored on a breakaway layup just before the overtime buzzer to give the Nacogdoches, Texas-based school an 85-83 victory that sent shock waves through the sport, ending the Blue Devils’ 150-game winning streak at Cameron against nonconference opponents — a run that extended nearly 20 years.

The upset that put the spotlight on the post-Dorian relief efforts came the night before the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament was to tip off in Paradise Island, Bahamas. Participants in the eight-team tournament — which includes No. 6 North Carolina and No. 13 Seton Hall — are assisting recovery efforts, with UNC senior Brandon Robinson leading a donation drive and Seton Hall raising money for hurricane relief.

Meanwhile, roughly 12 hours after pulling off the memorable upset against overwhelming odds, the Lumberjacks were back in East Texas on Wednesday morning distributing meals to the homeless for Thanksgiving — a project that was pre-planned, no matter the outcome at Duke.

“We have so much that the school gives us,” Bain said, “it’s only right that we give something back.”

Florida father grapples with death of his mother as 13-year-old son is accused in killing

This holiday season is proving to be a tough one for a Florida family after a grandson was arrested for stabbing his grandmother to death.

On Monday, police responded to a 911 call to a St. Petersburg home where the body of 56-year-old Gloria Davis was found with multiple stab wounds. Her 13-year-old grandson Javarick Henderson Jr., was arrested that afternoon, accused of killing her and forcing a family to grieve two losses.

“Everybody knows my mama was a good lady, loving lady,” Javarick Henderson Sr., said of his mother. “I’ve got to deal with my son. I want everybody to know he was a good, good child, also. Never got in trouble, no fights. I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Henderson was a middle school student who had no history of disciplinary problems at school or trouble with law enforcement. His young brother, who was present during the stabbing, told investigators that he heard screaming coming from the kitchen and was encouraged by his half-brother not to call 911 because he “did something bad and he needed time to think.” It was unclear whether the boys were spending the night with their grandmother of if they lived there full-time.

READ MORE: Substitute teacher allegedly beats up special needs student

As of Thursday, authorities have yet to release a motive for the tragedy that took the life of a beloved grandmother and changed the life of a teenager who had yet to really live. Family members told the Times how much Davis, who worked as a mail carrier for almost 20 years, would be missed.

“She was just beautiful inside and out,” Felicia Kennedy, who said she was Davis’ cousin, remembered. “It’s a shock. It’s just shocking.”

Henderson has been charged with second degree murder and officials are deciding whether they will charge him as an adult or a juvenile.

Kodak Black, despite a lengthy sentence, gives back from behind bars

With the holiday season coming into full swing, many people find themselves compelled to give back to those in need, and that includes rapper Kodak Black, who decided to do a good deed from behind bars.

On Tuesday, Black’s attorney Bradford Cohen took to Instagram to praise his client’s generosity. Cohen’s post featured a picture of thousands of gift cards to the grocery store Publix, which, according to Complex, are set to go out to families in Broward and Dade County in the rapper’s home state of Florida.

READ MORE: Kodak Black allegedly involved in prison fight, may have assaulted a guard

On Wednesday, Black shared a picture of a woman, whose face was covered by an emoji, standing with Cohen and holding one of the many gift cards. In the picture, which appeared to be a screenshot of the woman’s Instagram story, she wrote, “I had the pleasure of meeting @lawronin yesterday and with his help @kodakblack blessed my family with two gift cards and toys to start my kids Christmas! I wasn’t expecting my day to go this way but God. I’m so grateful to you both. Happy Holidays.”

Black captioned the photo with a message of his own, “You Become Strong By Lifting Others Up, Not By Putting Them Down 🎯🤞🏾”

Earlier this month, Black was sentenced to 46 months in prison on weapons charges that include him lying on applications to purchase weapons in Florida. Complex reported that the rapper is appealing his sentence.

Jay-Z sues Australian bookseller for using some of his most famous lyrics

A small Australian children’s book company is about to have 99 problems with the man whose name is synonymous with the phrase.

According to TMZ, Jay-Z filed suit against Australian online retailer Little Homie after it used the hook from one of the rapper’s most popular songs in its children’s book “AB-Jay-Z.” On the book’s back cover, there is a drawing of a boy below the words, “If you’re having alphabet problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but my ABCs ain’t one.”

READ MORE:  JAY-Z and Iconix finally reach a settlement, ending several of their lawsuits

In the suit, which was filed in federal court in Australia, Jay-Z claimed the retailer engaged in misleading and deceptive conduct by unlawfully using his name and lyrics for profit, TMZ reported. Jay-Z has also accused the company of copyright violations for using the lyrics to his famed song “99 Problems,” which was released in 2003.

Jessica Chiha, Little Homie’s director, released a statement on Thursday expressing her disappointment in the legal proceeding and said that the book was creating for parents to connect with children through hip hop.

“We are unbelievably disappointed to find ourselves caught in a legal battle with someone whose music we love and adore,” Chiha said in the statement. “To have someone like Jay-Z file legal proceedings is daunting beyond belief and hugely dispiriting.”

READ MORE: JAY-Z is reportedly ‘disappointed’ with Colin Kaepernick over his decision to change the ‘workout’ plan

According to The Guardian, Chiha raised $8,000 on Kickstarter to publish the “AB to Jay-Z” picture book, which refers to well-known rappers to teach the alphabet, and has since expanded to include a coloring book and clothing. TMZ reported that this is may have been the final straw for Little Homie as Jay-Z’s legal team sent a cease and desist to the retailer back in March 2018 and July this year, but they continued to use his likeness and image.

“We maintain we have done nothing wrong and intend to give it everything we’ve got for common sense and common good to prevail, to the extent we can fight the fight.”

Rappers Notorious BIG, Pharrell Williams and Snoop Dogg are also featured in the book.

Illinois city plans reparations fund for Black residents using cannabis revenue

A Chicago suburb that has historically denied access to its Black residents is now hoping to confront history by taking advantage of is expected to be a booming industry come next year: cannabis.

Evanston, Ill., has seen a decline in its number of Black residents due to a racist history of redlining, which segregated the city based on race and economics.  According to the Chicago Tribune, Blacks went from 22.5 percent of the population in 2000 to 16.9 percent in 2017. Evanston Alderman Robin Rue Simmons helped to pass a resolution to give reparations to Black residents that have felt the pinch of the city’s racist past.

READ MORE:  Reparations expert says it’s time to stop the tired narrative that Black people can’t manage money

“We were intentionally targeted,” Simmons said. “The law, the policy, the actions, the culture of the community, intentionally excluded black residents.”

Lifelong Black residents, even those with college degrees, have found it difficult to afford to live in the suburb.

“Despite the fact that I was born and raised here, and I live here, and I’m raising my kids here, I could not afford to buy here,” Toly Walker told CBS Chicago.

CBS Chicago reported that the reparations fund is the first of its kind in the country, and with recreational use of marijuana becoming legal in Illinois on Jan. 1, Evanston is expecting to put away 100 percent of the tax revenue from marijuana sales into the fund. The city hoped to cap the account at $10 million to help Black residents stay in the city, provide job training among other benefits.

READ MORE: Pay up, America! New calculation puts slavery reparations at $14 trillion

According to the Tribune, city officials are still examining ways to spend the money and how to best support the black community through housing, education and economic incentives. Many of the city’s Black residents support the unprecedented fund, including a retired teacher who said it could repair past wrongs.

“I support the approval of the ordinance for the city of Evanston to commit all of the anticipated tax revenue from the recreational marijuana businesses, to support work aimed at intentionally repairing harms done to the black community from policies and practices in so many different areas,” Evanston resident Oliver Ruff said.

Chicago man denied bail in killing of student who admitted ignoring his catcalls

The main suspect in the strangling-death of a University of Illinois Chicago honor student, Ruth George, was recently denied bail in a case that has outraged many across the country.

Donald Thurman, 26, faced a judge on Tuesday after he was taken into custody Sunday morning. According to Chicago station WLS-TV, Cook County prosecutors said Thurman, who has a criminal history, admitted to the attack that killed George and he had done it because she ignored his catcalls. He confessed after police tracked him down at a Chicago commuter rail station.

READ MORE: Remains confirmed as UFC fighters’ stepdaughter

“The defendant was angry that he was being ignored,” Cook County Asst. State’s Attorney James Murphy said. “The defendant came up behind the victim, grabbed her around the neck from behind, and put her into a choke hold. With his arms still wrapped around the victim’s neck the defendant dragged the victim from the ground and he opened her back seat car door.”

George, who had aspirations of a medical career, had just left a student event with a friend. The Chicago Sun Times reported that after the pair were dropped off in a Lyft, George allegedly walked to her car alone where she encountered Thurman. When she did not respond to Thurman’s catcalls, he followed her into a parking garage where he strangled and raped her, police say.

Surveillance video shows Thurman going into the parking garage about 1:35 a.m. Saturday morning and exiting about 30 minutes later.

After being reported missing, George’s body was found in her car by her sisters and police, who tracked her location by her cellphone, early Saturday morning. Her family released a statement on Tuesday saying they hoped what happened to her would not happen to anyone else.

”Ruth lived out her deep faith in Jesus by loving and serving others, leaving a legacy of Christ-centered kindness and sacrifice,” her family said in the statement. “She was the beloved baby of our family. We grieve with hope. We hold no hatred towards the perpetrator, but our hope is no other girl would be harmed in this way and for a mother to never experience this type of heartache.”

Thurman has been charged with first-degree murder and sexual assault. According to the Sun Times his next court appearance will be on Dec. 16

Daniel Kaluuya & Jodie Turner-Smith on their reactions to ‘Queen & Slim’: “I was speechless”

While the main plot of Queen & Slim tackles big issues like police brutality and the plight of Black folks in America today, the genius of this masterpiece lies in the intricate details. Through the title characters, (who are actually unnamed until the last moments of the film) Lena Waithe manages to illuminate the complexities and vastness of the Black experience, while zeroing in on two very specific people.

Jodie Turner-Smith is mesmerizing as Queen. When we meet her, she’s a polished, buttoned-up, non-believer whose expectation of excellence extends beyond herself and onto everyone she encounters. She’s here to make a mark on the world.

Daniel Kaluuya is flawless as Slim; an easy-going guy who doesn’t expect too much from anyone. He relishes the simple things in life like faith and family and would be content if the person he loves remembers him when he’s gone.

Somehow, these two characters manage to represent the entire community in one way or the other. At once, they embody the Black experience so precisely and so differently, creating a snapshot of what it feels like to navigate this country at this time in these bodies.

What makes this fete particularly impressive is the fact that both of these talented actors are from across the pond and we couldn’t wait to find out how they approached the roles.

“I tried to be as specific as possible. This is this person, he’s from this kind of family, this kind of area, this is his level of education, this is what he does on the weekends. It’s the care. I think we live in a day and age where you have to be specific to be general,” Kaluuya says. “The approach is just respect.”

Turner-Smith was equally moved when she saw the film.

“The weight of the Black American experience is so heavy and I just had so much respect and reverence for telling the story of these people and this community that is living, that is resilient, that is refusing to be dehumanized no matter how much society is doing that to them,” she explains. “I felt the heaviness of that, the reverence of that, the respect of that. I feel like we did what we set out to do.”

The British actress has lived in the U.S. since she was 7-years-old, but she still had a lot to learn about our history.

“What she does with her life caused me to dive in to this idea of policing in America, policing of Black men and women in America. They don’t teach you a lot of this history and the realities of how this society was built around oppression in school.”

Jodie Turner-Smith says the role had a profound effect on her real life.

“I didn’t even recognize myself. It wasn’t me. That even overwhelmed me more because all I wanted to do was tell the truth,” she says.

“This truth is  obviously pulling from so many elements of what this experience is of being a Black woman in America. A Black woman who has pain and who has built walls around herself. It changed me to do it and it changed me to watch it.”

Even though the actor who has starred in films like Black Panther and Widows was in almost every frame of the immensely powerful flick, Daniel Kaluuya admits he was blown away by the finished product.

“I just couldn’t speak. I was speechless,” Kaluuya says of his reaction to the film. Overtime I see it, it puts me in a place…There’s a lot of soul and there’s an eeriness to it. I don’t know what hat eeriness is.”

Florida reggae DJ set free after fatally shooting his girlfriend’s rapist

A Miami-Dade judge has determined that a man charged and jailed for murdering his girlfriend’s alleged rapist acted in self-defense.

Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Teresa Mary Pooler threw out murder charges against Pete Campbell, who is also known as DJ Feddy, under Florida’s controversial stand-your-ground law. The stand-your-ground law allows a citizen to use deadly force if they are being threatened with bodily harm. Campbell killed John King, 42, who was accused of raping Campbell’s then-girlfriend, reported The Miami Herald.

Campbell, 30, was deejaying at Bunny’s West Indian restaurant in Miami Gardens on July 3, 2015, when he was accosted by King and his friends in a restaurant hallway. Campbell told police he was able to tussle a gun away from one of King’s friends and he fired a fatal shot at King. After the shooting, Campbell fled the scene, but was arrested by Miami Gardens police and spent several years behind bars before he was freed by Pooler.

King reportedly came to Bunny’s looking for Campbell. Apparently, word got out that Campbell and his girlfriend had repeatedly tried to get the police to pursue King for the girlfriend’s rape.

During a stand-your-ground hearing, Campbell’s attorneys said King had raped Campbell’s girlfriend at gunpoint six months before the shooting. “She reported the case to the police but nothing was done about it,” Judge Pooler wrote in her order.

“This was the most transparent self-defense case of justifiable use of deadly force I’ve seen,” Defense Attorney, Jonathan Jordan, said in the hearing, according to The Miami Herald. “Credit to Judge Pooler who followed the law the Legislature has set out. The ‘victim’ sought out Pete at his place of employment; Pete never asked for this but he was put into a situation where he had no choice but to defend himself or become a victim himself.”

Pooler agreed that Campbell acted in self-defense.

“(Campbell) knew King’s reputation in the community for violence,” the judge wrote in her court order, reported The Herald. “He also believed that King was out to get him. …. Based on all that ensued prior, his fear was reasonable that King came to Bunny’s with the intent to kill or do great bodily harm.”

“Mr. Campbell testified and his testimony was very compelling and credible,” Pooler added.
