Three men indicted on capital murder charges for killing Joshua Brown

Police say it was a drug deal gone bad. Now, three men have been indicted on capital murder charges for the fatal shooting of Joshua Brown, who was a witness in former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger’s murder trial.

Jacquerious Mitchell, 20, Michael Diaz Mitchell, 32, and Thaddeous Charles Green, 22, were all indicted by a Dallas County grand jury on Thursday. The Mitchells, who are related as uncle and nephew, were captured and are being held in the Dallas County Jail, each on $500,000 bail. Green is at large and considered armed and dangerous, according to The Dallas Morning News.

Brown, 28, was gunned down in Dallas on Oct. 4. Just days prior, he had testified in Guyger’s murder trial for killing Botham Jean.

Brown, who lived across the hall from Jean, tearfully recounted for jurors what he remembered from that night, Sept. 6, 2018, when off-duty officer Guyger illegally entered Jean’s apartment. Brown said he had just gotten back in from a football game and was in the hallway when he heard two people who seemingly met by surprise followed by gunshots.

Brown told jurors he initially ran but then came back to his apartment and looked from his peephole and saw Guyger talking on her cellphone before police responded. He told jurors he had just met Jean that very morning.

Since that shooting, Brown moved to another apartment complex in Dallas.

When news broke that Brown had also been murdered, there was widespread speculation that Dallas police were involved as retaliation for Brown’s testimony – which Dallas police vehemently denied.

Several days after Brown’s killing, police say they knew who they were searching for.

Both Mitchell men and Green reportedly rented a car in Alexandria, La. and drove to Dallas to rob Brown, who thought they were making a drug purchase, according to The Dallas Morning News. When the men got his apartment complex, Green reportedly got out of the rental car to talk to Brown and this is when the two men started to argue.

Jacquerious Mitchell told police that he got out of the car and Brown shot him. Mitchell said as he fell into the car, he heard two more shots.

Green reportedly got back into the car with Brown’s gun and a bag filled with marijuana, and the men fled, according to The Dallas Morning News, which quotes police affidavits. Jacquerious was dropped off at a Dallas hospital, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken into custody at Parkland Memorial Hospital. His uncle was arrested on Oct. 8.

Witnesses told police they saw a silver sedan speed away after Brown was shot. Police said a silver 2020 Kia was returned back to a car rental place in Alexandria, La. two days later.

Anyone with information about the shooting or Green’s whereabouts is being asked to contact Detective Jacob White at 214-671-3690 or jacob.white@dallascityhall.com.

Miss South Africa wins Miss Universe 2019 competition

Nelson Mandela would be so proud.

Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa was crowned Miss Universe 2019 on Sunday after receiving excellent scores for her response to questions on social issues and what we should be teaching young girls about their value, self-being and how they have to “cement” themselves in spaces that they enter.

Tunzi’s smile was as vibrant as the sun and lit up the stage.

“I think the most important thing we should be teaching young girls today is leadership. It’s something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time, not because we don’t want to but because of what society has labeled women to be,” said Tunzi, who is an activist engaged in the fight against gender-based violence, according to Miss Universe. “I think we are the most powerful beings in the world and that we should be given every opportunity and that is what we should be teaching these girls, to take up space. Nothing is as important as taking up space and cementing yourself.”

Tunzi also impressed the judges with the way she worked her swimsuit and evening gown apparel and said she wanted to be Miss Universe because: “I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me, with my kind of skin and my kind of hair, was never considered to be beautiful. I think it is time that that stops today. I want children to look at me and see my face and I want them to see their faces reflected in mine.”

The two runners up – Miss Mexico and Miss Puerto Rico – also received high marks for their thoughtful responses to the question of why they should be selected as Miss Universe.

Sofía Aragón of Mexico told the judges that “if you do not use your beauty for your life’s mission, it’s just an empty ornament.”

Madison Anderson, who represented Puerto Rico, said the pageant helped her find her passion.

“Being on the Miss Universe stage is not just a dream” Anderson said. “I believe that I found my mission. It’s a representation of dedication, resilience, and perseverance. I do believe my mission is to show the world that magic happens when we refuse to give up because the universe always listens to a stubborn heart.”

The pageant, in all of its splendor, was held at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta and Steve Harvey hosted the affair for his fifth year. The pageant made history from the onset with Miss Myanmar, Swe Zin Htet, declaring she is the competition’s first openly gay contestant.

In a video, last year’s winner, Catriona Gray from the Philippines, told the contestants that her reign as Miss Universe over the past year had been “unforgettable, life-changing and purposeful.”

“We’re getting this amazing platform to voice the things we’re passionate about, the things we care about,” Gray said. “I always had a voice, but Miss Universe allowed me to amplify it.”

Two MIT seniors named 2020 Marshall Scholars

Talya Klinger and Steven Truong are MIT’s newest Marshall Scholars. The students are recipients of the prestigious British government-funded fellowship, which provides outstanding young American scholars the opportunity to pursue two years of graduate study in any subject at any academic institution in the United Kingdom.

The Marshall Scholarship program annually receives over 1,000 applications from top students representing higher education institutions across the United States. Around 40 scholars are selected each year.

MIT’s Marshall applicants were advised and supported by the distinguished fellowships team, led by Assistant Dean Kim Benard in Career Advising and Professional Development. They were also mentored by the MIT Presidential Committee on Distinguished Fellowships, co-chaired by professors Will Broadhead and Tamar Schapiro.

“MIT’s Marshall Scholarship applicants embody the academic excellence, personal integrity, and future-minded optimism that characterize MIT undergraduates at their best,” Broadhead says. “We on the Distinguished Fellowships Committee have been inspired by all of them and are especially pleased to congratulate Talya and Steven as they take their richly deserved places in this year’s class of Marshall Scholars.”

Talya Klinger

Hailing from Novato, California, Klinger is a senior majoring in physics with a minor in mathematics. As a Marshall Scholar, she will pursue a MASt in mathematics, followed by an MPhil in physics, at Cambridge University. After completing her two-year Marshall program, she plans to return to the U.S. for a PhD in physics. She hopes to have a career leading research on gravitational waves either as a professor or national lab scientist.

Klinger has conducted physics research with the Hughes group at the MIT Kavli Institute, the Thaler group at the MIT Center for Theoretical Physics, and the MIT Photon Scattering Lab. She has also conducted research abroad at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Ontario, Canada, and the Weizmann Institute of Science Astroparticle Physics Lab in Israel.

Deeply committed to social justice, Klinger helped found the MIT Prison Education Initiative, a student group that advocates for educational opportunities for local prison inmates. Klinger is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. She advises women considering majoring in physics and incoming first year students, and she has taught classes to middle and high school students through the MIT Educational Studies Program. She is vice president of the Society of Physics Students. A talented visual artist, Klinger has been an integral part of the MIT Shakespeare Ensemble, working as a costume and special effects designer. She has won writing awards for her essays and in high school was a nationally ranked classics scholar.

Steven Truong

Steven Truong, from Blaine, Minnesota, will graduate this spring with a double major in biological engineering and creative writing. At Imperial College London, he will read for an MS degree in biostatistics, and after one year will read for an MS degree in integrated immunology at Oxford University. Upon returning to the U.S., Truong will pursue an MD/PhD degree with the goal of working in both the research and clinical aspects of diabetes treatment. Many of his own family members have contended with the disease, including his father, Buu Truong, who passed away from diabetes complications during Truong’s junior year of college.

The son of Vietnamese refugees, Truong spent two years researching diabetes therapies in the laboratories of professors Daniel Anderson and Robert Langer in the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT. He subsequently pursued diabetes research in the laboratory of Professor Douglas Lauffenburger in the Department of Biological Engineering and received a National Science Foundation summer grant to conduct research at the University of California at San Francisco Diabetes Research Center. Truong is also co-principal investigator for a diabetes research project that he founded in Vietnam the summer after his first year at MIT. Truong was a Goldwater Scholar and has won awards for his science fiction and other writing.

Truong served as co-president of the Biological Engineering Undergrad Board and as opinion editor for the MIT student newspaper The Tech. He has volunteered with the Joslin Diabetes Center, MIT MedLinks, and the QuestBridge Scholars Network. In addition, Truong performs magic shows for MIT ClubChem and is a collegiate powerlifter.

Cory Booker responds to Mike Bloomberg’s “well-spoken” comments, assures there is “no beef” between friends

Cory Booker recently responded to fellow presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg‘s, “well-spoken,” comment, acknowledging the possible racial undertones, while assuring folks that there is “no beef,” between the two friends.

“It’s not up to me to be his teacher on this issue. It’s not enough to say, ‘I’m not a racist.’ If racism exists, you need to be an anti-racist. You need to be working every day on these issues,” Booker  told ABC News‘ Rachel Scott in an interview on Friday.

READ MORE: Aiming for debate, Cory Booker appeals directly to Kamala Harris voters

He continued, “Whoever is our nominee should not have to be explained to about why comments like that could be found to be offensive to a very important part of our constituency.”

The exchange between the New Jersey senator and former New York mayor comes a little less than two weeks into Bloomberg’s entry into the 2020 presidential race.

It all started when Bloomberg was asked about the scarcity in diversity, as it pertains to the current Democratic candidates, to which Bloomberg revealed that he and pal Booker actually endorsed each other on more than one occasion.

“He’s very well-spoken,” Bloomberg said of Booker, during a sit-down with CBS This Morning. He added, “He’s got some good ideas.”

Bloomberg than continued to boast about Booker.

“I can just tell you, he is a friend of mine and he is a Rhodes Scholar, which is much more impressive than my academic background. I envy him. And he can certainly speak for himself.”

Booker later told ABC News that Bloomberg has since reached out to him, following the seemingly controversial comments, and that he still considers the fellow presidential hopeful a “friend,” adding that there is “no beef,” between the two.

“We all say things we shouldn’t, but this is something our eventual nominee should know. If they don’t it is going to hurt them in our ability to win,” Booker stated, while touching on the importance of  having Democratic leaders who “can authentically connect” to the Black community.

Pete Buttigieg responds to alleged “Black Lives Matter” supporter crashing Black rally in support of his campaign

Democratic presidential candidate, Peter “Pete” Buttigieg, recently responded to a protestor who interrupted a gathering in South Bend, Indiana, consisting primarily of Black supporters in support of Buttigieg.

It all started on Wednesday, December 4, when a protestor sporting a “Black Lives Matter,” shirt, stole the attention from South Bend Common Council Member, Sharon McBride. McBride, a Black woman, was in the middle of expressing her support for Buttigieg, who is currently struggling to win over Black voters, and is far less popular in the AA community than that of fellow presidential candidate and Democratic rival, Joe Biden.

READ MORE: Pete Buttigieg’s presidential campaign used Kenyan photo to promote Douglass Plan for Black America

During McBride’s speech, a man interrupted her, demanding to know “Where are the Black leaders?”

“Who chose these people as black leaders? Who organized them?” the man shouted, before grabbing the mic from McBride.

“We have a police crisis in this town,” the unknown man said. “Why are we talking about Pete Buttigieg?”

The event crasher’s action was soon followed by commotion, including several patrons trying to remove him from the scene, as well as an older woman with a cane having to be restrained from hitting the outsider. Upon being escorted from the scene, the protestor shouted, “This is a farce,” to which several other people joined in on the chant.

A man in a “Black Lives Matter South Bend” shirt stole the microphone at event for African American supporters of Mayor Pete Buttigieg Wednesday. The man took the mic from Sharon McBride, a city council member, who is black. The man who interrupted her is not. The protest has added new fuel to an already heated conversation about the Democratic presidential candidate’s tenuous relationship with African Americans, from low polling numbers among black voters to a contested record at home in Indiana. This time, however, the incident involved an unusual role reversal: Where black residents of South Bend had once confronted their white mayor, here was a black woman standing up for him and getting heckled herself — in an exchange that she labeled “a form of bigotry."

A post shared by The Washington Post (@washingtonpost) on

The following day, Buttigieg addressed the situation. In a statement to NBC news, the South Bend mayor stated deemed the incident “unfortunate.”

“It shows kind of where politics has come to, especially for somebody to interrupt an African American woman who was speaking about her truth and in her experience,” Buttigieg started.

He continued, “But this is the climate that we’re in and we need to continue making sure that everyone is empowered to speak their truth, their experience, and in particular, when it comes to South Bend’s story,” he added.

Buttigieg was not present at the scene of the incident.

R.Kelly’s 21-year-old girlfriend Azriel Clary moves out of his condo

R.Kelly‘s longtime girlfriend, Azriel Clary, was spotted moving out of the singer’s infamous Trump Tower condo, amidst the singer’s ongoing legal woes.

According to TMZ, sources state that the 21-year-old Clary got her own place in Kelly’s hometown, Chicago, and she no longer plans to live alongside Kelly’s other live-in girlfriend, 23-year-old Joycelyn Savage. The media outlet also states that although Clary still supports Kelly, she wanted to “distance herself,” from the drama surrounding his case, and roommate Savage’s most recent social media drama.

READ MORE:R. Kelly’s girlfriend Joycelyn Savage says Patreon page is fake

Clary’s plans post-Kelly are to focus on her singing and acting career, TMZ also reports. It’s also been stated that the aspiring entertainer is currently making ends meet through various jobs, including modeling and an alleged TV project.

Earlier this year, Clary’s family, who accused Kelly of recruiting the young woman into a “sex cult,” claimed they hadn’t seen their daughter in years. Clary’s family had plans to meet her at Kelly’s Trump Tower condo, but the meeting was cancelled at Clary’s request, Steve Greenberg, R.Kelly’s lawyer, stated.

READ MORE: R. Kelly charged with bribing official for fake ID to marry Aaliyah when she was 15

Clary’s father, Angelo, also told TMZ that he “would do anything,” to get Clary out of Kelly’s Trump Tower residence, even if it meant expensing a new place himself. So far it hasn’t been revealed whether or not Clary’s father is responsible for her move, but it does appear to be a step in the right direction, in terms of reuniting with her family.

As for Kelly, the disgraced R&B singer recently made headlines again, after The New York Times reported that he was being charged with bribing an Illinois government employee in August 1994, to obtain a fake ID for a then 15-year-old Aaliyah. The purpose of the ID was so that Kelly could wed the late singer, whose marriage license incorrectly listed her as 18. The marriage was eventually annulled.

Sad News: Chicago rapper Juice WRLD dies at 21

The world just lost the talent of yet another young, Black artist. Chicago based rapper Juice WRLD, who experienced his first No. 1 album “Death Race for Love” earlier this year, died early on Sunday morning. He was only 21 years old.

Otherwise known as Jarad Anthony Higgins, Juice WRLD, passed away after leaving a private plane that had just landed at Midway International Airport in Chicago. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the rapper had a seizure and was then rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A statement from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, however, did not give an official cause of death, according to Variety Juice WRLD was just solidifying a name for himself in hip hop.

READ MORE: Principal Akbar Cook keeps school open Friday nights as safe haven for students

Born and raised in the Calumet Park neighborhood of Cook County in Chicago, he learned to play the piano and guitar from an early age. He began to gain popularity after posting songs on SoundCloud in 2015. Just two years later, Juice WRLD independently released his first track, “Lucid Dreams”  and after the song broke into the pop charts by 2018 Interscope Records scooped him up and signed him to a deal. His debut album, “Goodbye & Good Riddance,” went platinum soon after.

Over the summer, Juice WRLD released his second EP, dedicating it to his friends and fellow rappers, XXXTentacion and Lil Peep. He also co-headlined a European tour with Nicki Minaj and had already worked on several collaborations including those with Future, Ellie Goulding, Halsey, and Benny Blanco.

While his lyrics were said to have centered on depression, death, and substance abuse, there was indeed value in his message which was enhanced by a unique delivery couched in a love for emo and rock music.

When talking to Variety earlier this year about the number of young, Black men currently incarcerated or stuck in the legal system, Juice WRLD said:

“If you a minority, the justice system is made for you to lose. I’m not anybody to judge somebody’s actions. Everybody makes their own mistakes, regardless of what the mistake is. But if you’re a minority, just keep in mind that this criminal justice system was made for people to lose.”

Here’s a snippet of Juice WRLD in his own words:

White Mississippi Republican continues to contest narrow loss to Black Democrat, refuses to accept defeat

A white Mississippi Republican candidate for the Mississippi state representative is big mad that she lost and now wants to appeal the victory of her Black Democrat opponent.

A month after her narrow loss toDemocratic challenger Hester Jackson-McCray, the former incumbent Ashley Henley is asking the GOP-dominated Mississippi House to overturn the Nov. 5 election results. According to Mississippi Today, Jackson-McCray clinched victory by 14 votes, but Henley believed that the ballot box examination failed “to adhere to proper election procedures to insure a fair and legitimate election” under state law.

“There were irregularities that happened, absolutely, documented, very much so that bring into question the legitimacy of the election results,” Henley said. “That is without question.”

READ MORE: Mississippi judge won’t block Jim Crow era election process

Mississippi Today reported that Henley has several grievances regarding the ballots, which include failure to collect voter signatures in one of the district’s six precincts, lack of an incident report detailing why the signatures weren’t collected, claiming to have discovered two uncounted ballots where her name was marked, voter signature receipts not stapled to the corresponding pages of the voter receipt book, among other claims.

Jackson-McCray said that though Henley has a right to appeal any technicalities, she was still beaten in a fair election.

READ MORE: White Mississippi cop complains politician ‘worse than a Black person’

“Elections are elections. It’s not a guaranteed position,” Jackson-McCray said. “Anybody could come along and beat you. I just beat you fair and square. Hard work just beat you this time. She has the right to go through the technicalities, but I think if people read this notice she’s putting out, it looks like she’s arguing that her own party didn’t manage the election right. The election was run by Republicans. The DeSoto County election commissioners are Republicans. The Secretary of State is a Republican.”

Unfortunately, it would not be a surprise if GOP officials decide in Henley’s favor because four years ago, the GOP-run House voted to unseat a Democrat incumbent in favor of a Republican despite the Democrat official winning a tiebreaker.

‘I knew I was spiraling’: Fabolous finally speaks out after 2018 domestic violence incident

Rapper Fabolous shocked and disturbed fans after reports that he was charged with domestic violence against the mother of his kids, but after over a year of silence, he is finally addressing what happened.

According to Vibe, Fabolous is notoriously private, but on Wednesday he appeared on HOT 97’s Ebro in the Morning radio program where he finally addressed the March 2018 incident, which was caught on camera. The footage showed the rapper beating long-time partner Emily B. According to OK!Magazine, he was arrested and charged with four felonies after punching Emily in the face several times, knocking out her two front teeth, but served no jail time after taking a plea deal.

Those are the people that I care about, that I love, that I want to make sure that they are clear on what’s going on. That’s what I really focused on. Fabolous was later asked about what he would say to those fans that were unsure about whether or not they still wanted to support his music after the domestic violence incident, and he decided the best way to address them was to apologize for his behavior.

“I apologize for coming across in a light that I wouldn’t want to be represented in,” he continued. “People make their opinions and it’s hard to, after the fact, change somebody’s opinion on seeing a video of something because people still see with their own eyes and they just make their own judgement.”

Cory Booker announces initiative that would provide almost $100 billion to HBCUs

Presidential hopeful Cory Booker just unveiled a new plan to help historically Black colleges and universities that would roughly provide $100 billion in support.

Booker, who is still in the running for the 2020 Democratic nomination, has been an outspoken supporter of programs that enrich HBCUs and his proposed plan is by far the largest dollar amount of any of the other Democratic candidates.

“HBCUs make our country stronger and more reflective of the diversity that makes us so great,” Booker said in a statement. “I am here today because of the power of these institutions to uplift and bring about opportunity to Black Americans. As president, I will redouble our efforts to support and invest in HBCUs across the country ― my mother and father wouldn’t have it any other way.”

With HBCU enrollment steadily decreasing, Booker hoped to create programs that would help these historic institutions thrive. According to the Huffington Post, Booker hopes to focus on both immediate protections and long-term strategies to help them weather rough economic times. His plan includes grant initiatives that would enhance STEM programs, legislation to make certain HBCUs more affordable to low-income students and programs that would make HBCUs hubs for climate-focused research.

Booker also hoped to link investments into his climate research, the Huffington Post reported that the 10 percent of the senator’s $400 billion “Moonshot Hubs” would take place at HBCUs.

“Each hub would be focused on reasserting our global leadership in Research and Development (R&D) and leading the way in tackling the most important challenges in basic science, applied research, manufacturing, and commercialization,” Booker’s campaign said in a press release on Tuesday.

Fellow 2020 candidates Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have proposed HBCU initiatives of their own. Sanders has spoken out about the lack of resources available to HBCUs and vowed to put billions of dollars into helping them stay afloat.

Petition to remove Michael Vick as honorary Pro Bowl captain receives over 200,000 signatures

Former NFL quarterback Michael Vick was recently given the opportunity to be a captain at the upcoming 2020 NFL Pro Bowl, but many people are not on board with the idea.

A woman going by the name Joanna Lind started a Change.org petition urging the NFL to remove Vick as a captain, which according to CNN, would allow him to mentor other players and be on the sidelines during the highly anticipated game.

“Just saw this on Facebook and was absolutely disgusted,” she wrote on the petition page, referring to a social media post about Vick’s inclusion. “When is the NFL going to take any responsibility for the behavior of it’s current and former players? To honor a man who had zero regard for animals is unacceptable and I would like your help to make sure he is not honored at the 2020 NFL Pro Bowl.”

More than 200,000 people have signed the petition and as of Saturday morning, the petition is halfway toward its goal of 300,000 signatures.

In 2007, Vick admitted to participating in the killing of dogs, mainly pit bulls, and also operating a business enterprise that involved illegal gambling. He was subsequently suspended from the NFL and was forced to file for bankruptcy. He also spent 18 months in federal prison and became the poster child for animal cruelty.

According to CNN, Vick returned to the NFL in 2009 and played for the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers before retiring in 2017. He later signed with Fox Sports as an analyst.

As of Saturday morning, there is no word on whether or not NFL officials are reconsidering their choice to make Vick a captain at the Pro Bowl and Vick has yet to respond to the petition.

The 2020 Pro Bowl is set to take place on Jan. 26 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

Tamron Hall denies rumors that she exploded after learning Kelly Clarkson show renewed

On Friday, reports began to circulate that reporter turned talk show host Tamron Hall was not only angry that another show was renewed before hers, but that she was difficult to please. Hall has since come forward and denied the claims.

The Daily Mail claimed in an exclusive report that a source told them that Hall had a whole fit when she found out Kelly Clarkson‘s show was renewed before hers. The source also claimed that Hall blamed the crew for the snub.

“‘We would have gotten an early renewal too if you were all doing a better job!'” The source reportedly told the Daily Mail.

According to the Daily Mail, the Tamron Hall Show premiered on the same day as the Kelly Clarkson Show with a solid 1.4 rating, but that has since dropped to 1.0 while Clarkson’s show has been able to maintain a 1.5 rating.

“She wasn’t mad per se that Kelly’s show got picked up for a second season,” the source continued, “but she’s apparently frustrated with the direction of her show and afraid of it becoming a failure after walking away from her job at NBC and banking everything on this opportunity working.

On Friday, Hall posted a screenshot of the Daily Mail headline to her Instagram and decided to take the opportunity to set the record straight. In her caption, she released a statement denying the claims made in the article.

“It’s ironic that a few days after I said on my show that I’ve seen ‘men storm out of rooms, puffing and huffing, and no one says anything’ while ‘women [who] speak up [are viewed] as difficult’ that someone would leak a false story about me being difficult,” Hall wrote in a statement on Instagram. “As I said live on my show while defending Gabrielle Union, women are perceived as ‘difficult’ when they speak up. I have never once complained about Kelly’s renewal – I am so happy for my fellow Texan. I’m excited about my show and I can’t wait for season 2!!”

In a second Instagram post, Hall posted a video clip from her show where she talked about how difficult it is for women to speak up.

As for her show, Disney, who owns ABC, released a statement to the Daily Mail gushing over Hall’s show and showing no signs of stopping things anything soon.

“We had an extremely successful launch” the statement said. “Disney, Tamron, and Bill Geddie are all very pleased with the direction and performance of the show, and we look forward to our continued success.”
