Tom Hanks’ son Chet responds to Jamaican patois backlash from Golden Globes video

Tom Hanks may have received the Cecil B. DeMille Award at Sunday’s Golden Globes, but it appears to be his son Chet Hanks who stole the show after he was filmed speaking in blatant Jamaican patois while being interviewed on the red carpet.

According to Baller Alert, over the weekend the 29-year-old went viral after a video of him speaking in his new accent made the rounds on social media. Not surprisingly, Hanks, who is also one half of the musical duo FTRZ, was soon slammed with allegations of cultural appropriation.

And he wasted no time responding on Instagram, sharing a screenshot of a headline about the video, along with the caption, “Average citizens: damn this is scary I can’t believe we’re on the verge of WW3 let me check the news smh.”

This was a clear insinuation that the his clip was being blown out of proportion at a time where there are far greater threats for Americans to be concerned with. And his mother, Rita Wilson, commented that his video was “maybe the best laugh of the night.”

In the past Hanks has also been called out for his frequent use of the N-word while he was using drugs heavily in 2015. But in 2018 he confessed to Van Lathan that at the time he foolishly believed that sparking outrage by using the N-word could help to further his career.

He’s since changed his views on that word, citing that the birth of his daughter Michaiah in 2016 with Tiffany Miles – who is Black – gave him a reason to clean up his act and embrace sobriety.

“If my daughter wasn’t born, I don’t know if I would’ve made the change necessary. She saved my life, honestly,” he said to Access Live back in 2018.

Rae Sremmurd’s stepdad was reportedly murdered by their half-brother

The Hip-Hop duo Rae Sremmurd is dealing with a family tragedy.

On Tuesday, TMZ reported that Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi’s stepfather, Floyd Sullivan, 62, was fatally gunned down late Monday night in Mississippi. And now Lee and Jxmmi’s younger half-brother, Michael Sullivan, has been charged in the shooting death. Sullivan, 19, underwent a psychiatric evaluation before being charged last night, according to TMZ.

READ MORE: Rae Sremmurd’s Swae Lee on Malia Obama: ‘I think we’d get along’

According to Tupelo police, Sullivan died at the scene from several gunshot wounds. Sullivan is the only person charged in the killing.

Sullivan reportedly helped raise the SremmLife 3 musicians in Tupelo since they were in middle school and living with their mom, Bernadette, reported XXL Magazine. Sullivan and Bernadette are also parents to son, Floyd Jr.

Lee and Jxmmi have not released a public comment on the tragedy as of yet. XXL also attempted to reach out to a rep for Rae Sremmurd and the Tupelo Police Department.

However, Lee posted several tweets seemingly in reference to the incident. The first tweet included four broken heart emojis. In the second he writes: “I pray this world let’s me keep some compassion.” In a third tweet, Lee posts: “I’ve been tested my whole life.”

The brother’s social media followers let them know that they are in their thoughts and prayers.

“Lean into each other for support. You need each other right now. We may be strangers but we’re all here to support you and send our love. There’s still a lot of love and good out there in the world even when it’s hard to see,” wrote Rachel @Pinkadoodlezzz.

“I pray for you and your family in Jesus name and that Gods angels camp around you all during this time,” added MargoTheUnstoppableFaith

We send our prayers and love out to Rae Sremmurd at this time of unthinkable loss.

Misty Copeland Brings Her Masterclass to Women of Power! And 5 More Things About Her You Need to Know

Misty Copeland

She is among the most photographed, most athletic, most stunningly talented and graceful, gifted, and resilient artists in the world today and Misty Copeland is going to be among the amazing speakers who will grace the stage at the 2020 Women of Power Summit.

The ballerina, known for her pioneering status as the first African American woman in the 75-year-history of the American Ballet Theater (ABT) to be promoted to principal dancer, will be joining us at the Mirage in Las Vegas for an exclusive fireside chat on Friday, March 6.

Not only is she an author (and subject of several books for young girls), she’s an activist for women and girls’ causes, equality, and social justice. Now that you know she’ll be at the Summit (where we hope to see you, too), here are a few things about the phenom named Misty that you didn’t know:

Misty Copeland

1. Her busine$$ is blooming and constantly re-BOOTing!

She just inked a new deal as a brand ambassador for LG Signature, the electronics company. BTW, did you see her promotion for luxury shoe brand Stuart Weitzman during the holidays? GORGEOUS!

2. Her manager is a SISTA!

Who’s helping Misty make the deals that have catapulted her from dancer to internationally bankable BRANDMASTER? None other than Gilda Squire, a former literary press agent. Misty was Squire’s very first management client.

3. She’s committed to teaching what she knows

Her online masterclass features her dancing with a black male partner and the instruction encompass dance technique in her class, she teaches mental fortitude and how to handle criticism, tackle fear, and trade self-doubt and self-defeat for self-confidence.

4. She’s STILL making history

You can see Misty pirouette with a black partner in person next May when ABT launches its first-ever production of Romeo and Juliet where both principal characters are black. Misty’s pairing with ABT soloist Calvin Royal III represents yet another historical landmark in Misty’s groundbreaking career. The show premiers May 27 at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York.

5. She’s adding filmmaker to her résumé

Her production company, Life in Motion Productions, will produce its first film in 2020. Moved and disturbed by homelessness, particularly in Oakland, California, (where her hubby’s family is from), Misty is producing a silent film about the issue. Filming starts next month.

Ralph Lauren removes pants that jacked The Sigmas’ letters

Ralph Lauren tried it.

The upscale clothing giant attempted to sell a pair of chinos adorned with the Phi Beta Sigma Greek letters on its French site until Watch the Yard got word of it. The site rallied the Greek fraternity and other Divine 9 members to reach out to Ralph Lauren and ask them to remove the garment. The chino pants, which reportedly cost $335.77, featured the Greek letters on the top of the knee.

The public campaign appears to have worked and now a Ralph Lauren spokesperson is apologizing.

“The use of these symbols on our products was an oversight for which we deeply apologize. We are immediately taking action to remove the product from our sales channels. While we have a rigorous review process in place for all of our designs, this has prompted us to take another review of our protocols to help ensure that this does not happen again,” the company said in a statement, according to Watch the Yard.

“As an American brand with more than 50 years of heritage, Ralph Lauren is inspired by many facets of American culture. As part of this, we are firmly committed to respectful and appropriate use of all cultural icons and insignias,” the statement adds.

The company ended the note by stating that “the chinos will be removed from all sales channels” and that they have reached out to Phi Beta Sigma to inform them.

Watch the Yard, a media company that covers the Black college experience, first reported the story on Monday. According to the organization’s website, within three hours of the story running, Ralph Lauren had issued a statement and vowed to pull the pants from its shelves, which illustrates the power of unity and determination.

Watch the Yard celebrated its successful campaign on Instagram.

“Earlier today we published a story about pants, which are being sold for 299.99€ on Ralph Lauren’s site with Phi Beta Sigma printed on them. Within three hours of us reporting on the story, an official Ralph Lauren spokesperson reached out to Watch The Yard and told us that they are taking the pants off of all sales channels and gave us an exclusive statement explaining themselves,” they captioned the post.

Divine 9 Greeks also shared their excitement for the achievement.

Happy 2020 🤘🏽 @beyonce

A post shared by Hot Girl Meg (@theestallion) on

Megan captioned the black and white photos: “Happy 2020 @beyonce.”

The past year has been a big one for Blue Ivy. She continued to travel the country and world with her famous parents. She walked her share of movie premieres and red carpets. She sat courtside with her folks rooting on NBA games.

Blue Ivy also dropped her first song on The Lion King soundtrack, “Brown Skinned Girl,” along with St. JhnWiz Kid, and Beyoncé. The song, which includes Blue Ivy singing, earned her the Ashford & Simpson’s Songwriter’s Award, which was presented at the 2019 Soul Train Awards. The song, which landed on the Billboard Hot 100, also earned Blue a songwriting credit.

Blue Ivy also sang the Black national anthem on her mother’s 2019 Homecoming documentary.

And Bey and Jay continue to make the case that Blue Ivy is a “cultural icon” in their battle to get her name trademarked. In their trademark brief, the couple said their daughter is “reported on by popular press, and whose name generates millions of hits on a Google search.”

Blue Ivy almost came out of the womb a star. Her dad featured her coos and cries on his hit “Glory,” which landed B.I.C. (how Jay credited her on the track) as the youngest kid to ever appear on Billboard’s charts.

What can Blue Ivy expect in this 8th year? Our guess is more greatness.

Fox says it’s official, Jussie Smollett will not be returning for the ‘Empire’ finale

Nearly a year ago, Smollett was canned from the hit drama amid charges that he concocted a wild story about being robbed at gunpoint by two, homophobic men on the streets of Chicago – charges that were later dropped by Cook County state’s attorney Kim Foxx.

Since then, speculation started growing that Smollett would return in the finale episode, however, Fox entertainment head, Michael Thorn, said that’s not happening, according to TheWrap.

READ MORE: Jussie Smollett may be brought back to Empire during final season, showrunner says

“He will not be coming back,” Thorn said to TheWrap. “As you would expect when you’re finishing an iconic series like Empire, that Brett (Mahoney), as the showrunner, along with his producing partners, would certainly have discussions about what’s the best way to finish the show. In this case, Jussie will not be coming back for the finale.”

Producers wrote Smollett and his character, Jamal Lyon, out of the show at the end of Season 5 as Chicago police built its case around the narrative that Smollett staged his own attack to promote his career. Prior to the start of the final season, the network said there were “no plans” for Smollett to return, however, Mahoney told TheWrap that it would be “weird and particularly challenging to do (the finale) without him.”

Empire, co-created and executive produced by Lee Daniels is currently on a midseason break but will return in the spring to run its final episodes. Producers wrote Smollett out of the show by having Jamal move to Paris.

The series debuted five years ago to powerhouse ratings, becoming an almost instant success. Since that time, however, it has steadily lost viewers each season and ratings have tanked. Having Jamal come back from Paris would certainly boost show ratings but Thorn said it is not something that producers have discussed or are considering.

“I will tell you on all of our shows we always talk about how do you boost ratings and in this marketplace it’s very challenging,” Thorn told TheWrap. “When you’re a pop-culture phenomenon, like Empire was, you burn bright for as long as you can. Unfortunately, when you’re doing 18 episodes a year … some viewer attrition is just unfortunately inevitable. But we think this season has been fantastic. Have we talked about how to goose ratings? Of course. Did we talk about exploiting Jussie’s situation to do so? No.”

READ MORE: Jussie Smollett hits back at critic who claims he lied about racist attack

Thorn said longtime viewers of Empire are in for a treat when the show closes out.

“What I will tell you is what Brett and Danny and Lee and Imagine (Entertainment) have planned is awesome,” Thorn added in the interview. “And I’m really excited. It’s bittersweet, obviously, for the show to end, but I’m really excited, ’cause I think they have an incredible creative plan for the finale and I hope people come in droves.”

Best Money Move of 2020: Investing in Renters Insurance

workplace wellbeing

One Sunday in the winter of 2017, Sheila Bridges’ sprawling Harlem apartment went up in smoke. Not flames, luckily, but a fire that started in a basement storage room shot thick black vapor straight up to the top of her pre-war building as if through an efficient flue.

The fire was extinguished in less than 30 minutes but within half that time, Bridges’ 8th floor home of more than 20 years was filled with a dark haze that ultimately blanketed every surface from her walls and window treatments to her dishes, computers, and clothes.

It would’ve been a crisis for anyone, but for Bridges, a renowned interior designer who not only works from home but uses the finely appointed space as a showplace for her work, this was an all-encompassing nightmare—and an expensive one.

“My home is my calling card for potential clients and I’ve lived there for most of my adult life,” says Bridges, whose clients have included former President Bill Clinton, entrepreneur Sean Combs, music mogul Andre Harrell, and bestselling author Tom Clancy. “Renting sometimes feels transient—when I don’t own it, why would I paint it or fix it or invest in it? But I invested tremendously. I’ve painted, papered, and renovated. And, like anyone, it’s my home, so all of my belongings are there, all those irreplaceable personal things that mean the most.”

renters insurance

Sheila Bridges

The logistics of restoring her home to normal were daunting, but what eased Bridges’ stress and prevented the fire from being a financial disaster was the fact that she had renters insurance.

After her $500 deductible, a policy that cost her less than $700 a year fully covered more than $200,000 in expenses, enabling her to fully restore her home and most of its contents, which meant both a great deal to her personally and to the vitality of her business.

“Even without any actual burning, fire is just so damaging,” she says. “My apartment had this fine black dust over everything and it just got worse as it came through the heating system and settled into every cavity, crack and crevice in my and my neighbors’ homes.

“I had to send more than 75 pieces of art and photography to be restored,” she recalls. “That alone cost about $100,000.”

The Philadelphia native says she has her late father to thank for her ability to salvage so much despite the catastrophe. “This is one of those things my dad was big on. From the moment I moved to New York, my father said you have to get renters insurance. It’s probably hands-down the best financial decision I ever made.”

More Renters—and Need—Than Ever

At a time when more people are renting than in the last 50 years—about 37% according to the Pew Research Center—renters insurance could be one of the best and most overlooked investments around.

“People will get car and homeowners insurance because they’re made to by lending agencies,” explains Jain Williams, a State Farm insurance agent in Oakland, California. “Even here in California, where fires are an issue, a lot of people don’t know about renters insurance and don’t take it even when it’s offered.”

This is especially true of millennials, who have a uniquely complicated relationship with the idea of homeownership. Despite rising rental costs nationwide, the number of millennials who say they plan to always rent is also on the rise. According to a 2019 survey by Apartment List, 12.3% of millennials don’t expect to ever own a home, up from 10.7% in 2018.

Their reasons largely hinge on an inability to save a down payment while also paying off education debt. According to Apartment List, the primary obstacle cited by black millennials is bad credit.

Yet, despite its affordability, Williams says renters insurance is still vastly underutilized. Created to protect renters primarily in case of theft or fire, she notes, “Everyone always says, ‘it’s not going to happen to me.’”

rent

Sheila Bridges’ Harlem apartment

That was the case with Bridges’ neighbors, the majority of whom didn’t have insurance. Some had to get rid of most of what they owned and start over. Others attempted to clean up themselves, something Bridges said was virtually impossible to do thoroughly, not to mention dangerous due to the exposure to carcinogens.

Bridges, whose unique African American toile wallpaper lines the dining room of CBS This Morning anchor Gayle King, quickly called in the pros. In addition to the artwork restoration and cleaning every surface, nook, and crevice, including the paint and wallpaper on every wall, she had to have her computer equipment specially cleaned. Her dry cleaning bill—for not just clothes but draperies, fine bedding, and pillows—was $37,000.

In addition, she says, her policy covered her short-term stay in a hotel until the apartment was safe for her to inhabit, as well as boarding for her dog.

State Farms’ Williams notes that the typical policy even pays for food if renters are forced to move into temporary housing that lacks a kitchen.

While some newer rental complexes are requiring renters insurance because owners are afraid of the liability, Williams says most still don’t, and most renters don’t appreciate the value of the relatively small investment.

“Financially, it just makes sense,” Williams says. “Especially if you bundle it with auto insurance, sometimes the discount pays for the renters insurance.”

No one is more of a believer than Bridges, who notes that most of her neighbors have now joined the club. Even with insurance, she describes the experience as devastating, “but I was covered,” she says. “I can’t even imagine the level of devastation if I hadn’t been.”

CASTING NEWS: Aldis Hodge joins Regina King’s directorial debut ‘One Night In Miami’

It looks like Regina King has selected the leading men for her directorial debut One Night in Miami.

The award-winning actress has enlisted Aldis Hodge, Leslie Odom Jr., Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Eli Goree in the film that’s based on the play by Kemp Powers.

Regina King brings four Black icons back together in directorial film debut, ‘One Night in Miami’

The impressive list of talented actors will portray some truly impactful figures like Malcom X (Adir), Sam Cooke (Odom, Jr.), Cassius Clay (Goree), and Jim Brown (Hodge).

“One Night in Miami is a love letter to Black manhood that powerfully explores themes of race, identity and friendship,” said King in a statement to Deadline. “Each of them has contributed so much to culture and history. We’re so excited to have Kingsley, Eli, Aldis and Leslie in the lead roles showing a different side of these iconic men.”

Check out the official description:

Set on the night of February 25, 1964, the story follows a young Cassius Clay as he emerges from the Miami Beach Convention Center as the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion. Against all odds, he’s defeated Sonny Liston and shocked the world of boxing. While crowds of people swarm Miami Beach’s hotspots to celebrate the match, Clay — unable to stay on the island because of Jim Crow-era segregation laws — spends the night at the Hampton House Motel in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood celebrating with three of his friends: activist Malcolm X, singer Sam Cooke and football star Jim Brown. The next morning, the men emerge determined to define a new world.  In One Night in Miami, Powers aims to pinpoint exactly what happened during those pivotal hours. Featuring the music of Cooke, including his hit song, “A Change Is Gonna Come,” the film offers a piercing narrative for the evening, which challenges the four men, strips them bare and reveals them for who they were.

Obama also released a statement adding “By sharing their stories, they’re helping others see that the ups and downs of the first year of college are something everyone goes through — and they’re creating a supportive community for others facing similar challenges,” Obama said, according to CNN.

The statement goes on to say students will “explore issues like the academic stress of college, making new friends, college affordability, and the physical and mental health while in college.”

Obama had a great year in 2019. Her memoir, Becoming, became a blockbuster bestseller, and she and Barack Obama announced a new production deal with Netflix. For 2020, word is that her husband is working on publishing a book about his presidency. This just might be the Obamas’ year (again).

Naomi Osaka talks “near death” experience while vacationing in Turks and Caicos

Naomi Osaka may already be a legend on the tennis court but in the ocean, she had a terrifying off-season experience that reminded her that swimming is not her forte.

Osaka said she was vacationing in Turks and Caicos when she had a near-death experience. She said her older sister, Mari, urged her to paddleboard and all was going fine until she got caught up in a current, according to Japan Times.

“The current took us and I almost died,” Osaka said, reported Japan Times. “Listen, if you’re scared, everything becomes more exaggerated. So I’m going to tell you my story. (Mari) might say I’m lying, but this is what happened to me personally.”

Osaka said she was enjoying life when she first started off – lovely day, spotting starfish, close to the house – until a current changed everything.

“I’m freaking out a little bit, because the house is getting further. And I’m like, ‘How far out are you trying to take us?’ Because it’s black, like, the water is black now, and the house is like a tiny dot, and I can’t really swim that well,” Osaka explained to Japan Times. “And then I fall in the water, so now I’m like thinking about all the sharks in the Caribbean and I was like screaming at her (Mari), like, ‘If I die, this is on you. You’re going to have to tell mom how I died in the Turks and Caicos.”

Osaka laughs now at the experience but at the time, she said she was terrified.

“I’m like crying, and then I get back on the board and then she decides that she wants to say that she sees a shark. So now I’m like screaming and crying,” Osaka said. “But in that moment I just really thought, like, I don’t want to die like that. Yeah, that’s the end of the story.”

Mari helped her work her way back on the board and into calmer waters. Now the Australian Open champion says she’ll carry the experience with her to help her when she experiences tough matches on the tennis court.

“I just feel like I’m experiencing so many things in my life and . . . and I’m trying to take it all into, like, perspective that these are things that I’ve never thought I was going to be able to do.”

Osaka won two Grand Slam titles at the U.S. Open in 2018 and the Australian Open in 2019. Later this month, she is set to compete in the Australian Open in Melbourne, and she’s hoping to defend her title.

A 6.4 earthquake rocks Puerto Rico amid heavy seismic activity

PONCE, Puerto Rico (AP) — A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Puerto Rico before dawn on Tuesday, killing one man, injuring at least eight other people and collapsing buildings.
The quake was followed by a series of strong aftershocks, part of a 10-day series of temblors spawned by the grinding of tectonic plates along three faults beneath southern Puerto Rico. Seismologists say it’s impossible to predict when the quakes will stop or whether they will get stronger.

The 6.4-magnitude quake cut power to the island as power plants shut down to protect themselves. Authorities said two plants suffered light damage and they expected power to be restored later Tuesday. Puerto Rico’s main airport was operating normally, using generator power.

“I’ve never been so scared in my life,” said Nelson Rivera, a 70-year-old resident who fled his home in the city of Ponce, near the epicenter of the quake. ” I didn’t think we would get out. I said: ‘We’ll be buried here.'”

Teacher Rey González told The Associated Press that his uncle was killed when a wall collapsed on him at the home they shared in Ponce. He said 73-year-old Nelson Martínez was disabled and that he and his father cared for him.

Eight people were injured in Ponce, Mayor Mayita Meléndez told WAPA television. Hundreds of people sat in the streets of the city, some cooking food on barbeque grills, afraid to return home for fear of structural damage and aftershocks.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit at 4:24 a.m. just south of the island at a shallow depth of six miles (10 kilometers). It initially gave the magnitude as 6.6 but later adjusted it. At 7:18 a.m., a magnitude-6.0 aftershock hit the same area. People reported strong shaking and staff at a local radio station said live on air that they were leaving their building

A tsunami alert was issued for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands after the initial quake but was later canceled.

In the historic district of Ponce, authorities evacuated more than 150 people from two buildings they said are in danger of collapsing. Among them were more than two dozen elderly patients from a nursing home who sat in their wheelchairs in silence as the earth continued to tremble.

Amir Señeriz leaned against the cracked wall of his Freemason Lodge in Ponce and wailed.

The roof of the 1915 building was partially collapsed and dust and debris lay around him.
Outside, he had already carefully placed 10 large historic paintings. The earth continued trembling as he went back into the building to recover more artifacts.

Helping him was artist Nelson Figueroa, 44, who said he slept in his street clothes.
“It was chaos,” he said, adding that there was a traffic jam in his coastal neighborhood as terrified people fled.

Albert Rodríguez, who is from the southwest town of Guánica, said the tsunami sirens went off before officials canceled the alert. He said there is widespread damage in his neighborhood.

“The road is cracked in the middle and it lifted up,” he said.

The mayor in the southwest town of Guayanilla, Nelson Torres, told NotiUno radio station that the church in the public plaza of his town collapsed.

Puerto Rico’s governor, Wanda Vasquez, ordered government offices closed for the day and urged citizens to remain calm and not check damage to their homes until daylight.
A 5.8-magnitude quake that struck early Monday morning collapsed five homes in Guánica and heavily damaged dozens of others. It also caused small landslides and power outages.

The quake was followed by a string of smaller temblors.

The shake collapsed a coastal rock formation that had formed a sort of rounded window, Punta Ventana, that was a popular tourist draw in Guayanilla. Residents in the south of the island have been terrified to go into their homes for fear that another quake will bring buildings down.

The flurry of quakes in Puerto Rico’s southern region began the night of Dec. 28. Seismologists say that shallow quakes were occurring along three faults in Puerto Rico’s southwest region: Lajas Valley, Montalva Point and the Guayanilla Canyon, as the North American plate and the Caribbean plate squeeze Puerto Rico.

One of the largest and most damaging earthquakes to hit Puerto Rico occurred in October 1918, when a magnitude 7.3 quake struck near the island’s northwest coast, unleashing a tsunami and killing 116 people.

Julián Castro endorses Elizabeth Warren in presidential race

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Obama administration housing chief Julián Castro is endorsing Elizabeth Warren’s presidential bid, saying the Massachusetts senator is “the most qualified, best-equipped candidate to win the nomination” and defeat President Donald Trump.

In an online video posted Monday featuring the two former 2020 White House rivals, Castro tells Warren, “No one is working harder than you.” The pair had remained friendly during months of campaigning.

Castro, also the former mayor of San Antonio, dropped out of the presidential race last week. The Iowa caucuses that kick off the Democratic primary are less than a month away.
Warren’s campaign announced minutes after the endorsement that Castro will appear with Warren at a rally Tuesday evening in New York City.

In a statement, Castro said the 3-minute endorsement video explains why “Elizabeth and I share a vision of America where everyone counts. An America where people — not the wealthy or well-connected — are put first.”

Warren has for months polled among the still-crowded primary’s front-runners in Iowa and nationally, along with former Vice President Joe Biden, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg. All four enjoyed strong fundraising through the end of 2019, further evidence the primary could be a long, drawn-out battle.
