WATCH: New York Attorney Mondaire Jones could make history in 2020 with a congressional run

Lawyer, nonprofit leader, and activist Mondaire Jones is in the running to become the next Democrat to represent New York state’s 17th Congressional District. Jones — who grew up in Rockland County, about 30 minutes north of New York City —  is very proud to be running a campaign in his area and determined to create policies that will benefit the community. If elected, he will be the first openly Black gay Congressman.

During an interview with theGrio, Jones, a Democrat, revealed that because he was Black, gay, and from a low-income household, he never thought he would make it to the House of Representatives.

“It wasn’t something that was in my future,” says Jones. “I thought that when people learned the authentic Mondaire, that wouldn’t be something that they would accept. I’ve been really grateful to see the changes in public opinion and in our society over the past couple of years.”

According to a report by The Victory Institute, Nationwide,  there are just 698 openly LGBTQ elected officials. LGBTQ elected officials who identify as Black, African American, and/or Afro-Caribbean rose 43.3 percent (from 30 to 43). In 2019, 10 openly LGBTQ people were sworn into the 116th Congress U.S. but none were Black.

“I’m not running to make history” continues Jones. “I’m running to fight for the people in my district. Of course, it’s important that we have representation. And honestly, if I had been able to look to somebody in Congress like myself growing up, life would have been a lot easier for me. I would have had direct evidence of the fact that things really do get better for someone like myself. So, that history is not lost on me. When Barbara Jordan died, her obituary said that she had lived with a woman for 20 years. It’s wild that a lot of our heroes were not able to be themselves.”

“I was raised by a single mom in a small working-class community of about 30,000 people called the Village of Spring Valley,” shares the Democratic candidate.

“My mom worked multiple jobs just to be able to provide for our family, even as we relied on Section 8 housing and food stamps. So for me, the economic insecurity that a lot of people are experiencing in my district and certainly all throughout this country is something that’s really personal for me. And I think that I’m the person in my race for the Democratic nomination that’s best equipped to fight for working-class families and for people of color such as myself and for low-income people.”

One of R. Kelly’s two girlfriends says they lied for him during Gayle King interview

In the wake of police being called to R. Kelly’s Chicago after his two live-in girlfriends got into a physical altercation caught on camera, one of them is coming forward with a stunning revelation about how truthful they have been concerning his case.

Wednesday afternoon, which happened to be Kelly’s 53rd birthday, Chicago PD arrived on the scene in response to a reported battery at Kelly’s Trump Tower condo. This took place shortly after Azriel Clary and Joycelyn Savage were seen coming to blows on Instagram Live.

“The female victim and the 24-year-old offender were engaged in a physical altercation until separated by unknown individuals at the scene,” Chicago Police said, according to USA Today. “The offender fled and is not in police custody at this time.”

After the incident, Clary took to social media to tell her side.

“The skeletons is [sic] coming out. Period,” she explained. “You know what? Rob has been lying to all of y’all, and that’s the sad part about it…He been lying to all.”

“He had people like me lying for him,” she continued, adding that she wanted Savage in jail as well.

She then dropped a bombshell about her appearance on CBS This Morning with Savage last March, where they both vehemently defended Kelly, now claiming, “That’s why we never watched the documentary. We got on Gayle King as stupid as can f**king be.”

Wednesday evening TMZ confirmed that Savage had surrendered to Chicago PD and was booked for misdemeanor battery for the incident at the entertainer’s condo. She is set to face a judge Thursday and face the charge in court on Feb. 6.

Authorities say Clary claims she was punched in the face with a closed fist and had to go to the hospital to be treated for redness and swelling of her left eye. When asked for a comment, Savage’s parents shared they solely blame R. Kelly for this week’s incident between the two women even though he is currently behind bars.

Taraji P. Henson Launches Her Own Haircare Line in Target

Taraji P. Henson

If Taraji P. Henson wasn’t an award-winning actress, then you may have ended up sitting in her salon chair.

Although it’s hard to imagine the Empire star giving clients sew-ins and blowouts, the Howard alum revealed that she used to do hair back in college to earn extra money. And now, she’s revisiting that side hustle with the launch of her own haircare line.

“I know that if I didn’t go into acting, I would have been a cosmetologist,” Henson told People in an exclusive interview.

Henson, who says that she’s never lost her passion for hair, has been working on her new hair collection, TPH by Taraji, for 10 years. “I was like a mad scientist,” said the Golden Globe winner about creating the line, which she started concocting in her kitchen.

Set to officially launch in Target stores on Jan. 29, the 18-piece product line was created for every texture, from straight to wavy to curly to coily. The color-coordinated line is divided into four parts: cleansing and care, repair, treatments, and scalp-care. However, Henson told Allure that she particularly wanted to focus on scalp care products due to her own experiences wearing weaves over the years.

“The first time I went to get the weave taken out, it smelled like mildew. I was so embarrassed. I was washing my hair, but wasn’t drying the weft,” she said. “When you have a weave or an install, your hair is braided down and then sometimes they sew a hair net down on top of that and then they sew the hair tracks on top of that. My dilemma was how do I get to my scalp? How do I clean it? I didn’t ever want that mildew smell again.” Her Master Cleanse, the hero product, is inspired by a homemade concoction Henson made specifically to refresh her scalp when she wears weaves.

Henson first teased on the brand’s Instagram account back in September of 2019. The 49-year-old actress posted a recent selfie after using her products to do her natural hair.

Chicago mayor wants city to grow legal weed and give minorities the opportunity to ‘buy-in’

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot wants people of color to also benefit from the recreational adult-use marijuana industry.

On Monday, Lightfoot said up to $15 million that is generated by tax-increment financing could serve as seed money for Black and brown Chicago residents to learn the business and “buy into” a city plan to open a “cooperative cultivation center,” according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Most importantly, the money could help minorities overcome their largest hurdle to getting involved in the industry: capital.

READ MORE: Cannabis sales in Illinois hit nearly $3.2 million on first day of legalization

Currently, “the vast majority” of people who cultivate and run legalized marijuana businesses are white men, the mayor said.

“This is a very, very expensive business to get involved with. The basics to be a cultivator requires about a $13 million to $15 million investment. There are not a lot of people that have that, particularly in a market that a lot of banks and traditional lenders won’t touch,” Lightfoot said, according to the Sun-Times. “I think the only way to really crack this nut is for the city to invest its own resources to get engaged, get diverse entrepreneurs involved in the most lucrative part of the business, which is cultivation.”

“First of all, we’ve got to jump through the regulatory hoops. … Hopefully, we will get those roadblocks cleared. But I’m very serious about it,” the mayor added.

In December, Lightfoot first mentioned the concept of a city-owned cultivation center, in response to a threat from Jason Ervin, the City Council’s Black Caucus chairman, to delay the Jan. 1 start date for selling recreational weed in Chicago to July 1 due to lack of minority representation.

Ervin continues to be angry because Black people have paid the highest price in the war on drugs yet have “zero representation” among the owners of 11 medical marijuana dispensaries up and running on New Year’s Day.

Lightfoot believes if the city gets involved in the recreational marijuana business, it could open the doors to minority participation. “One of the things that every entrepreneur that’s a small businessperson faces is access to capital. There are some things that we can do using existing city resources to help facilitate that,” she explained, reported the Sun-Times.

READ MORE: Illinois city plans reparations fund for Black residents using cannabis revenue

“I’ve made no secret of the fact that I would like to have the opportunity for the city to create a cooperative cultivation center so we can bring a professional in, let the professionals run it. But then, people will buy into the cooperative — either with modest cash investment or sweat equity — and eventually, after they learn the business from top-to-bottom, turn that over to them,” Lightfoot added.

Two Black executives file lawsuit against McDonald’s alleging racial discrimination

Two Black McDonald’s executives have filed a lawsuit against the Chicago-based, fast food chain claiming they were discriminated against and passed over for promotions.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Chicago federal court by Victoria Guster-Hines and Domineca Neal, both of whom work out of the company’s Dallas office, claim they were passed over for raises, threatened, and subjected to racial slurs and an overall “hostile and abusive work environment,” according to The Chicago Tribune.

READ MORE: Philly teen boys brutally assault McDonald’s worker after she refuses to give them free food

The suit alleges that McDonald’s demoted Guster-Hines and Neal in July 2018 from positions of vice president to senior director positions when the company restructured under its former CEO, Steve Easterbrook. What the restructuring essentially did, according to the lawsuit, was “purge” African Americans from senior executive titles.

Easterbrook, who was fired late last year after he admitted to having a consensual relationship with an employee, is named in the lawsuit as a defendant, as well as current CEO Chris Kempczinski and Charles Strong, the west-zone president for McDonald’s.

“In shocking ways difficult to overstate, McDonald’s under Easterbrook and Kempczinski declared war against the African American community,” the lawsuit said, reported The Chicago Tribune.

In a statement, McDonald’s disputes “characterizations” in the lawsuit and said it is reviewing it for further comment.

“At McDonald’s, our actions are rooted in our belief that a diverse, vibrant, inclusive and respectful company makes us stronger,” the company statement read, according to The Tribune. “While we disagree with characterizations in the complaint, we are currently reviewing it and will respond to the complaint accordingly.”

In the statement, McDonalds also pointed out that 45% of its corporate officers and all 10 of its field vice presidents are people of color, according to The Tribune.

Carmen Caruso, the attorney representing Guster-Hines and Neal, said both employees have taken a leave of absence from McDonald’s and have filed discrimination charges with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The lawsuit alleges the employees were subjected to years of racial discrimination and seeks undisclosed monetary damages, however, it specifically notes over $2 million in lost pay and benefits for Guster-Hines and “hundreds of thousands of dollars” for Neal.

Cory Booker: Impeachment trial could be ‘big blow’ to my campaign

By JULIE PACE AP Washington Bureau Chief
WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Cory Booker said a looming impeachment trial and other pressing issues in Washington could deal a “big, big blow” to his Democratic presidential campaign by keeping him away from Iowa in the final weeks before the Feb. 3 caucuses.

Booker is one of five senators running for the Democratic nomination who face the prospect of spending the lead-up to the first-in-the-nation caucuses in the Senate chamber as jurors in President Donald Trump’s trial instead of barnstorming Iowa. The challenge for Booker is particularly acute, given that he has struggled to break into the top tier of candidates and needs a strong showing in Iowa to keep his campaign going.

“It’s going to be a challenging four weeks in the caucus for us,” Booker said in an interview on The Associated Press’ “Ground Game” podcast. “If we can’t raise more money in this final stretch, we won’t be able to do the things that other campaigns with more money can do to show presence.”

The New Jersey senator wouldn’t say how much money his campaign needs to raise to stay competitive in Iowa, including through television advertising, if he’s marooned in Washington during a Senate trial. His campaign has been candid about previous fundraising struggles, announcing in September that he could be forced to end his campaign unless he raised $1.7 million in 10 days. He cleared that bar and stayed in the race.

Yet Booker’s standing remains tenuous. He failed to meet the polling requirements for the last Democratic debate and has not qualified for next week’s faceoff. A poor showing in Iowa, where his campaign has plunged significant resources, would make it difficult for him to continue in the race.

“If our pathway to victory ever closes off, I’m not staying in,” said Booker, who predicted he would “upset expectations in Iowa.”

“Whether that’s one, two, three, four, I don’t know. But we will definitely upset expectations,” he said.

Booker spoke to the AP on Wednesday just after attending an all-Senate briefing with administration officials on the intelligence used to justify last week’s targeted killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani. Like most Democratic senators, and a small group of Republicans, Booker said he was unconvinced by the administration’s argument that an imminent threat against Americans justified the killing.

The hastily scheduled briefing prompted Booker to cancel events in Iowa to return to Washington. His schedule for the rest of the month is also in limbo as congressional leaders haggle over how and when to launch the Trump impeachment trial.

“If this trial lasts two weeks, that is literally dozens of events we won’t be able to do,” Booker said.

Other candidates facing the same predicament are Sens. Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar and Michael Bennet.

Booker has repeatedly sidestepped opportunities to draw sharp contrasts with some of his rival candidates, saying he doesn’t want the party’s eventual nominee to be weakened by the time they face off against Trump in the general election. Booker said he also has genuine friendships with several of the candidates and has bonded with others during the course of the grueling campaign.

He singled out Joe Biden for an assist in his relationship with actress girlfriend Rosario Dawson. Booker said Dawson called the former vice president one of his “best wingmen” after Biden sang his praises when they met at a recent primary debate.

“A solid to him for being one of the most persuasive arguments that Rosario Dawson should double-down in her relationship with me,” Booker said of Biden.

Michelle Obama Launches IGTV Series About College Students: ‘A Year of Firsts’

Michelle Obama

While some would relax after eight long years in the White House, rest is something Michelle Obama isn’t doing just yet. The former first lady will be launching an Instagram video series that will premiere later this month.

Obama and her initiative Reach Higher have partnered with ATTN: on a new IGTV series, “A Year of Firsts.” The series aims to empower and inspire freshman college students across the country. Each episode will spotlight the journeys of the students as they embark on their quest for higher education. “A Year of Firsts” continues the tradition that Obama started as first lady of uplifting and inspiring young people and supporting their educational potential.

“As a first-generation college student myself, I know how intimidating it can be to take that leap and pursue your educational dreams,” Obama said in a statement. “That’s why I’m so proud of these students. By sharing their stories, they’re helping others see that the ups and downs of the first year of college are something everyone goes through—and they’re creating a supportive community for others facing similar challenges.”

“A Year of Firsts” is produced by ATTN: in partnership with Reach Higher. ATTN: is working with the students directly to document their first year as they explore issues like the academic stress of attending college, making new friends, college affordability, and the physical and mental health challenges they encounter while in college. Episode one of “A Year of Firsts” will premiere exclusively on IGTV in mid-January. Over six episodes, the series will chronicle the students’ first year in college and conclude with the last episode in June 2020.

Obama announced the series on her Instagram page: “The first year of college is exciting, but also a little nerve-racking. As a first-generation college student myself, I know how intimidating it can be to try to navigate through a new place and make new friends, all while trying to figure out who you are and who you want to be. That’s why I’m so excited that @reachhigher is teaming up with @attndotcom to share the stories of four first-year college students: Robert, Linette, Regan, and Haseeb. Can’t wait for you all to meet them and learn more about what taking that leap really feels like, day in and day out. Stay tuned!”

“As Mrs. Obama highlights in each episode, there are many hidden challenges to making it through college,” said ATTN: co-founder, Matthew Segal. “This series will meet many students where they live—on Instagram—and share candid perspectives about how to overcome barriers. We’re thrilled to be partnering with Mrs. Obama and Reach Higher to engage and inspire students to invest in themselves through higher education.”

Aretha Franklin’s youngest son is asking people not to support the MGM-produced biopic, ‘Respect’

Kecalf Franklin, Aretha Franklin‘s youngest son, is staunchly against the Jennifer Hudson-led upcoming biopic of his mom’s life because he says MGM never bothered to get input from Franklin’s children for the film.

READ MORE: First look: Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin in ‘Respect’ biopic

“How can you make a movie about a person and not talk to the persons sons or grandchildren about important information?” Kecalf Franklin wrote in a Facebook post on Saturday. “If you are a “real” fan of my mothers, please do not support this. Ask yourself … would you want this done to you?”

While Franklin said he supports Hudson as the Queen of Soul, who he claims was hand-selected by his mom for the lead role in Respect, he took issue with the rest of the film. The film, which is being produced by MGM, started filming last fall and is scheduled to be released on Oct. 18.

“Everything else is being done against our wishes,” Franklin, 49, wrote in the post. “The Franklin family (does not) support the movie that is in production!”

David Bennett, the longtime attorney for Aretha Franklin, however, took issue with the post and said Kecalf doesn’t speak for his three brothers or other members of the Franklin family.

“He does not speak for the family,” Bennett told The Detroit Free Press. “I know he doesn’t speak for his brother Ted White or his brother Clarence Franklin. The grandchildren have absolutely nothing to do with this. What he’s really doing is talking for himself.”

Further, Bennett said Decalf’s post really has more to do with his desire to “become the personal representative of the estate” instead of Franklin’s niece, Sabrina Owens, and less about the movie. Kecalf is currently petitioning Oakland County Probate Court to be named executor of his late mom’s estate, the news outlet reported.

READ MORE: Barack Obama wants the hat Aretha Franklin wore to his 1st presidential inauguration

Owens has been the executor since Franklin died in 2018 death, and White and Clarence Franklin submitted court filings backing her in the role. However, ever since multiple wills were discovered last spring that each contained different instructions, the family has been in court to try and hash out whether the wills were actually written by Franklin. Last August, Judge Jennifer Callaghan instructed handwriting experts to assess the validity of the documents. Callaghan also ordered Owens and Franklins’ four sons to start mediation.

Charlene Glover Hogan, Kecalf Franklin’s lawyer, did not respond to a Free Press request for an interview on Tuesday.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Demands Ralph Lauren Remove Greek Letters From Its Pants

Ralph Lauren Phi Beta Sigma

A black fraternity is furious at designer Ralph Lauren for using its Greek letters on a pair of chinos, according to Blavity.

On the Ralph Lauren French website, the clothing line is selling a pair of chino pants with the Greek letters Phi Beta Sigma on them. The symbols for the black fraternity are located on the back of the pants in red and black. It was listed at a price of $335.77.

A petition had been started against the fashion designer on Change.org demanding that they stop selling the jeans.

“Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. DOES NOT belong on your jeans!!”

“We are a week away from 106th anniversary of the founding of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and what is plastered all over social media? An ad for Polo Ralph Lauren Chino Graphique Droit with the letters that represent Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Greek letters on the back crease of said pants! Members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., an illustrious organization stared & shared in utter disbelief!”

“One member said ‘this is copyright infringement at its finest, they have no permission using my letters to sell their pants.’ Did we mention, these pants are selling for 299.99€? If Polo is using these beloved letters so freely, where are the royalties going? To whom did they ask & get permission to use these letters, and why did they feel so comfortable doing this?”

“We are demanding that Ralph Lauren do the right thing and RECALL, DESTROY, & PUBLICLY APOLOGIZE for trying to capitalize off of black culture! We don’t know WHO thought that this was a good idea; but they need to fix it quick! Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.is a professional organization that [is] not for sale!”

After the outrage from Phi Beta Sigma became public, a Ralph Lauren spokesperson reached out to Watch The Yard and gave a statement:

“The use of these symbols on our products was an oversight for which we deeply apologize. We are immediately taking action to remove the product from our sales channels. While we have a rigorous review process in place for all of our designs, this has prompted us to take another review of our protocols to help ensure that this does not happen again.

As an American brand with more than 50 years of heritage, Ralph Lauren is inspired by many facets of American culture. As part of this, we are firmly committed to respectful and appropriate use of all cultural icons and insignias.”

They have since removed the chinos from all sales channels and they have reached out to the fraternity.

Andrew Yang calls on LeBron James to join the Yang Gang

Andrew Yang wants LeBron James to be a part of the Yang Gang.

When TMZ Sports asked Yang who’d he choose from the NBA to be his running mate, he wasted no time before saying he’d go with the King himself.

READ MORE: LeBron James dons ‘Beto for Senate’ hat before Lakers game in San Antonio

“I’d have to go with LeBron James,” Yang told TMZ. “He’s already shown he’s got a heart of gold and loves the American people.”

Yang added that James “certainly could do better than the guy who is currently there,” before pondering which name his team would use: “Yang-LeBron. Yang-King. Yang-James.”

Then 2020 democratic presidential hopeful, who also happens to be a huge NBA fan, told TMZ that he wants James’ endorsement. He looked into the camera and sent the Los Angeles Lakers star a message: “LeBron, if you’re watching… let’s work together.”

Yang, a tech entrepreneur, has already attracted a solid group of celebrity endorsements – including musician and actor, Donald Glover, who sponsored a pop-up event for him in LA last month. Other high profile Yang supporters include comedian Dave Chappelle, Weezer star Rivers Cuomo, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, investor Sam Altman, actors Nicolas Cage and Noah Centineo, and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. Yet, Yang has not yet landed a professional star athlete endorsement.

Bron, who is no fan of President Donald Trump’s and has even called him a “bum” and a “clown” on several occasions, supported Hillary Clinton’s campaign in 2016, and introduced her at a rally in Ohio. So it’s feasible that he will eventually endorse a democratic candidate for president.

Also during the TMZ Sports interview, Yang continued to challenge Texas Sen. Ted Cruz to a basketball battle, “anytime, anyplace, one on one.” Yang challenged Cruz back in September to a game saying the loser would have to donate $5,000 to a non-political charity of the winner’s choosing.

READ MORE: Donald Glover is co-sponsoring a fundraiser for Andrew Yang

Cruz agreed to the challenge even as he told his Twitter followers that Yang had a height advantage and appeared to be a good shot, judging from online videos.

Still, the one-on-one game hasn’t happened.

“Come on Ted, you accepted. You said it was game on. The people of Texas deserve better. The people of the United States deserve better,” Yang joked.

CEO Dennis Maple Designs New Curriculum For Growth At Goddard School Franchisor

Goddard CEO Dennis Maple

Dennis Maple comes from a family of educators. But instead of standing in front of a whiteboard teaching students, the high-powered corporate veteran is now running a for-profit school system Goddard.

Maple was recently installed as CEO of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania-based Goddard Systems Inc., which licenses more than 500 franchised schools with more than 65,000 students in 37 states. Now the Memphis native, who spent the past two decades in the education sector in such positions as head of Aramark Education, which manages food services and facilities for K-12 schools, and president of First Student Inc., North America’s largest bus transportation company, has been designing a new curriculum for evolution and growth at the franchisor that specializes in early childhood education.

One plank of Maple’s agenda is “new school growth.” Becoming a Goddard franchisee is not a low-cost proposition though: The license fee is $135,000 with a required minimum investment that exceeds $700,000. However, the company states that a franchise earns an average EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) of $371,321, based on 2018 results of a school open more than 18 months.

As part of our BLACK ENTERPRISE C-Suite Interview Series, Chief Content Officer Derek T. Dingle talked with Maple about his new role that marries his business acumen with passion for education. The following are edited excerpts from that conversation:

As CEO of Goddard, how do you ensure the uniformity of quality education throughout the franchise system?

The business has been here for approximately 30 years, and during that time they’ve built a really strong reputation and brand for having premium-based education that we make available to the communities through a franchising system. The whole concept behind Goddard from an education standpoint is that we have a comprehensive, play-based curriculum. Our goal here is to really stimulate the child’s cognitive, emotional, physical, and social development starting as early as 8 weeks of age. We have our educational advisory board of experts that do research all over the world, and we leverage them to inform us about ways to touch on those four areas.

When you think about this educational environment, a lot of people would probably reflect on it as daycare because historically that’s what it was. But there’s been a great deal of research that suggests that the most formative and impactful years of the development of children start at a very early age. We are confident in our thesis because the government is now beginning to focus disproportionately on early childhood funding as a way to improve education for all kids. So we’re happy to be on the forefront of that thinking.

With that focus, how do you effectively implement instruction for students?

We have a prescribed model we refer to as STEAM. It incorporates the traditional STEM elements at an appropriate level for kids around science, technology, math and so forth but we add to it this notion of the arts because we think that stimulating kids’ interest in music and other types of developmental activities are good cognitively and also good to expose them to these things early on.

Through this franchised system, we have extensive training for those that get into the business without experience and those who are restarting the business with follow-up training over the course of time that allows them to remain current on the curriculum that we believe is important. One of the things that I’ve learned working with educators is [that they should] be able to craft their lesson plans on a daily basis based upon the capability of the young people that they are teaching. So while we have a framework, we actually give a degree of flexibility, unlike some of our competitors, where we can actually customize the solution for the children in a particular classroom at a particular point in time.

How are Goddard schools structured so franchisees can meet education standards and, at the same time, be successful?

We’ve built a series of classrooms throughout the school that are largely derived based on age. They each have a different designation. There are specific objectives for each of those respective classes.

There is a defined curriculum that instructs the franchisees. We support them with ongoing training from the very beginning, throughout their tenure as licensed franchisees in our system. Then we have a very robust Q&A and also coaching mechanism with our field teams that are in two parts. There’s an education team that is responsible for franchisees’ execution of the education curriculum within the guidelines that have been established. And we have an operating team that is there to both coach, but also to drive compliance with the operational standards around things like certification of teachers, review of their background credentials, the safety of the facility, the maintenance of the facility in a certain way, utilization of certain equipment, room sizes, ratios, et cetera.

How do you identify the right franchisees for this type of business?

In terms of the identification of potential licensees, I would say that we use a traditional mode of gaining interest in our business just like any other franchisor would. We go to the conventions. We use trade publications. I think BLACK ENTERPRISE is a wonderful opportunity for people of color to perhaps learn something about a franchising model that may not have considered before. I’m not sure other than educators how many people wake up every day and say I want to [operate] an early childhood education school.

One of the biggest ways of identifying new franchisees is through word of mouth from existing franchisees. So our model allows existing owners to partner up with other owner, or other perspective owners including sometimes their education directors. We have a lot of parents that were historically in our system, loved Goddard and wanted to impart that same sort of connection with parents in their community. So there are a variety of ways that we identify people.

What should prospective franchisees be aware of before seeking opportunities?

You have two entities inside the school—the business side, which is led principally by the owner, and the education side, which is led principally by an experienced educator. The owner’s job is to really make sure that he or she hires the right educational director responsible for the execution of the curriculum, identification of teachers, culture, teacher development, relationship development with parents and students. Collectively, they share the responsibility for executing the curriculum and providing a safe, nurturing developmental environment for kids.

As you came aboard, you gained feedback from franchisees, employees and parents. How did that process inform current business challenges and adjustments?

I had a  fairly prescriptive processes that I’ve held myself accountable for, which for me was spending an extensive amount of time in schools and learning from parents, franchisees, educational directors, and basically observing how we execute the Goddard model. In addition to that, we spent a lot of time in sessions with existing employees to understand the work that they do, how they measure performance, what accountabilities and expectations are established and how we celebrate success. I have reached a conclusion that the company continues to be, in my opinion, [one] that’s had a great history but also is positioned for evolution and growth at least at the rate that we’ve seen in the past and probably faster. The trick will be to balance growth while making sure that we maintain the integrity of the business model, which really is about the culture of the company, the academic model, and the outcomes that we want for young people. We’ve engaged in a very comprehensive marketplace assessment, meeting with parents and consumers, using outside agencies. We also have consultants looking at some of our internal structures and accountabilities and really every aspect of the business to make sure that we’re moving ourselves toward being best in class in every category.

So what is your strategic growth plan for Goddard and how does it align with metrics for success?

We’re looking at one of our preliminary market assessments, which really started with an indexing of just how large is this overall early childhood development market space, what is our share in that space, and what are some early indicators about the vitality of the business. When I first came on board, I think the sense was for me, not being versed in the existing business model, that the history of growing the business was primarily focused on new school growth. And we believe that will continue to be a major element of how we grow the business. However, I would also tell you that a secondary priority, one that’s very important to franchisees and one that we want to fully embrace and support to an even greater degree, is on what we call full time equivalence, or FTE. It is basically the number of students enrolled in a school that march them toward full capacity. So on average, we have a capacity rating of around 88% to 90%, which is approximately 10% less than our capacity available at any point in time. So the range is some schools at 100% capacity or even greater based on after-school programs and other schools that are 75% or 80% capacity. The point is there’s always opportunity to grow capacity. Along those lines, I’m becoming increasingly interested in learning more about additional services that parents are willing to pay for that provide enrichment after school. .

In terms of diversifying the franchisee mix, will you look at opportunities in more urban environments?

Our model has historically been much more focused in suburban communities. I don’t think that’s any secret. This is not the cheapest of the early childhood education models. It’s because we believe the value that we bring is significant and of course, we want our franchisees to be compensated for the level of investment that it takes in order to deliver the curriculum. In terms of markets, I’m not displeased with where we are but I think there’s room for growth. In terms of ownership, I would also say that we have a fairly well-represented, diverse population. But it’s not as diverse nor as many in numbers as I’d like to see. So I can’t tell you today that we have a specific program that’s focused on that but I would say that we’re very open to all groups of people interested in being part of a premium quality system that really cares deeply about educating kids around the country and all communities.

Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young donates more than $1M to help Atlanta families’ medical debt

Outstanding medical debt in Atlanta has been reduced by more than $1 million, thanks to Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young and his philanthropic foundation.

The Trae Young Foundation relieved medical debt from 570 struggling families in Atlanta by partnering with RIP Medical Debt, a national nonprofit established to buy down medical debt across the country, according to CNN.

“The city of Atlanta has welcomed me with open arms,” Young said, according to CNN. “Giving back to this community is extremely important to me. I hope these families can find a bit of relief knowing that their bills have been taken care of as we enter the New Year.”

RIP Medical Debt was created as a 501c3 in 2014 by two former debt collection executives as a way to purchase bundled medical debt on the secondary debt market for pennies on the dollars, according to the nonprofit’s website. The nonprofit targets those most in need, including debtors that are “two times or below the federal poverty level, insolvent and/or with debts that are five percent or more of gross annual income,” according to the nonprofit.

Once RIP buys up the outstanding debt, the organization sends forgiveness notices to the families and also helps them repair their credit reports, according to the organization’s web site.

Through RIP Medical Debt’s model, Young’s foundation donated $10,000, which erased $1,059,186.39 of medical debt. The average amount of debt forgiven was $1,858, according to a press release.

Sam Sylk: Radio Personality Has A Heart For His Community

Radio personality Sam Sylk

BE Modern Man: Sam Sylk

Radio personality, restaurateur, author; 45; Host, The Sam Sylk Show; Owner, Sam Sylk’s Chicken & Fish

Twitter: @samsylkshow; Instagram: @samsylk

I’m blessed to be a voice in the community through my radio show, which is heard on 93.1WZAK in Cleveland, Ohio. Each year I host an annual coat drive, called Winter Wraps. Over six years we have given away more than 7,000 coats.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF IN LIFE?

Wow; there is so much, I don’t know where to start. I’m proud of me and my wife building an empire with our restaurants, Sam Sylk’s Chicken & Fish.

HOW HAVE YOU TURNED STRUGGLE INTO SUCCESS?

In 2012, I lost my job and closed my business. I thought I would never open another because I was so depressed, but I didn’t give up. I took what I went through to become better. Now, I own Sam Sylk’s Chicken & Fish in four locations in the Cleveland area. It’s the same with radio; being let go several times taught me to build my brand as a radio personality and to stay connected with my followers.

WHO WAS YOUR GREATEST MALE ROLE MODEL AND WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM HIM?

Hubbard Jones, from Chicago, is my friend’s father. He was the guy on the block that everyone looked up to. He took us camping, to church ballgames, etc.—such a great man.

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

You have to believe in yourself. If you don’t believe, how will anyone else believe in you or what you’re trying to do? And be consistent!

HOW ARE YOU PAYING IT FORWARD TO SUPPORT OTHER BLACK MALES?

As both a radio personality and an entrepreneur, I pay it forward by being available to listen and give advice. When I was coming up, we had men (what some may call O.G.s—LOL) to drop some knowledge on us, and I feel it’s my duty to mentor young men and give back. For example, I’ve hired three young, male high school students, and these are their first jobs. Employing them gives me a chance to be a positive influence on them.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE MANHOOD?

Manhood is being a leader and a role model for someone. We have to protect our families and community.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT BEING A BLACK MAN?

Overcoming obstacles and being there for my family and community.

Tom Hanks’ son Chet responds to Jamaican patois backlash from Golden Globes video

Tom Hanks may have received the Cecil B. DeMille Award at Sunday’s Golden Globes, but it appears to be his son Chet Hanks who stole the show after he was filmed speaking in blatant Jamaican patois while being interviewed on the red carpet.

According to Baller Alert, over the weekend the 29-year-old went viral after a video of him speaking in his new accent made the rounds on social media. Not surprisingly, Hanks, who is also one half of the musical duo FTRZ, was soon slammed with allegations of cultural appropriation.

And he wasted no time responding on Instagram, sharing a screenshot of a headline about the video, along with the caption, “Average citizens: damn this is scary I can’t believe we’re on the verge of WW3 let me check the news smh.”

This was a clear insinuation that the his clip was being blown out of proportion at a time where there are far greater threats for Americans to be concerned with. And his mother, Rita Wilson, commented that his video was “maybe the best laugh of the night.”

In the past Hanks has also been called out for his frequent use of the N-word while he was using drugs heavily in 2015. But in 2018 he confessed to Van Lathan that at the time he foolishly believed that sparking outrage by using the N-word could help to further his career.

He’s since changed his views on that word, citing that the birth of his daughter Michaiah in 2016 with Tiffany Miles – who is Black – gave him a reason to clean up his act and embrace sobriety.

“If my daughter wasn’t born, I don’t know if I would’ve made the change necessary. She saved my life, honestly,” he said to Access Live back in 2018.
