Dwyane Wade says telling Gabrielle Union about break up baby was the ‘hardest thing’

A promo for an upcoming documentary unearthed details of how Dwyane Wade had to break it to Gabrielle Union years ago that he had fathered a child while the couple was briefly separated.

“Hardest thing I’ve ever had to do is man up and tell Gabrielle Union that I’ve had a child with somebody else,” Wade says in ESPN’s “D. Wade: Life Unexpected” airing on February 23.

“When you hold something in that you know is going to come out and you have this information and you know it’s gonna f— somebody’s life up, that you care about, that you love, if it don’t hurt you, then you’re not human,” Wade added, in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “… Me and Gab just went through something that you never want to go through and we still came out of it.”

Wade and Union began dating in 2008 and broke up briefly in 2013 which is when he fathered a son, Xavier, now 6, with Aja Metoyer. The pair announced their engagement later in 2013, and in a press conference before a game in December of that year, according to Yahoo!, he told reporters of the baby: “I had a time, a part in our break, in our pain and our hurt, a blessing came out of it in my life, having a son that was born healthy.”

Wade also has a son, Zaire, 18, and daughter Zaya, 12, from his previous marriage to Siohvaughn Funches. The NBA legend is also guardian to and the guardian to nephew Dahveon, 18. Wade recently opened up to Ellen DeGeneres about how he and his family are supporting Zaya who is transgender. He and Union share daughter Kaavia born in 2018. Wade retired from the NBA after the 2018-19 season after 16 seasons which included three championships. He pointed to his expanding family as one of the reasons he was walking away.

Wade has since begun working as a studio analyst for TNT, and on Saturday he was a judge in the All-Star Weekend dunk contest in his hometown of Chicago.

Black swimmer suing police after being handcuffed and gun pointed at head

The only Black member of a college swimming team, Jaylan Butler, was also the only member to be accosted by police, handcuffed, forced to the ground with a gun pointed at his head and ordered not to move.

Butler, of Eastern Illinois University, filed the suit in federal court in January with the help of the ACLU, which contends that six officers from three different departments refused to let Butler go even when his teammates and coaches told them that he was with them and had done nothing wrong.

The police claimed at the time that they were looking for a suspect, according to NBC News.  However, the suit alleges that the officers still refused to let Butler go even after he provided ID. The suit also claims that the police also did not document the arrest.

The incident on February 24, 2019, began when the team made a rest stop in East Moline, Ill., on the way back from a tournament. Like his teammates, Butler got off the bus, went to take a selfie near a road sign, and was returning to the bus when several cars pulled up and officers got out with guns drawn.

According to the suit, the police shouted at Butler to put his hands up, and he did without resisting. The police then cuffed him and forced him to the ground with two officers pinning him down and another pointing a gun at his head, saying, “If you keep moving, I’m going to blow your f—— head off.’’

“I felt numb. I didn’t really know what to expect,” Butler said of his thoughts as his ordeal went on.

Even after they were told Butler was with the team, police still refused to release him, putting him in the squad car.

Eventually, the officers removed the handcuffs and asked Butler to get his ID from the bus. After he showed them his identification, they told him he was free to go.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker called for a “thorough and transparent investigation” into the incident, posting on his Facebook page: “It’s unacceptable for any young person to feel unsafe and disrespected anywhere in this state — but every day, too many young people of color live through it.”

Butler told NBC of his feelings since the incident: “I’ve been OK … in the past, when bad things happened to me I tried to see the good but this started to eat at me.”

NBA honors Kobe Bryant by renaming All-Star MVP trophy after him

The NBA will hold its 69th All-Star Game Sunday in Chicago and for the first time, its Most Valuable Player Trophy will carry the name of Kobe Bryant who tragically died three weeks ago.

The winner of the award in Sunday’s game will receive the Kobe Bryant All-Star MVP Trophy, NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced Saturday.

READ MORE: Vanessa Bryant changes name of Kobe’s foundation to honor her late daughter Gianna

“To all of us, it seemed like the appropriate way to bring honor to him,” Silver said, according to ESPN, at the annual state-of-the-league press conference the night before the game at Chicago’s United Center. It was fitting, he added because Bryant holds the record for consecutive All-Star appearances at 18 and is tied for the most MVP awards with four. In his first All-Star appearance in 1998, he was the youngest-ever player in the midseason showcase.

Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven other people were killed in a helicopter crash on January 26.

The naming of the MVP award in his honor is only one of several ways the NBA honored Bryant at its All-Star Weekend festivities. On Friday, he was one of eight nominees selected as finalists for the Basketball Hall of Fame, with the final vote coming in April. Bryant was a sure thing to be inducted in his first year of eligibility. Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett were also named finalists in their first year eligible.

READ MORE: Charles Barkley says Kobe Bryant’s NBA career and rape case are both part of legacy

Said Jerry Colangelo, chairman of the Hall of Fame, according to NBA.com: “Because of the enormity, even before Kobe’s death, we think Kobe and Duncan and Garnett bring to (this) … we’ve never had a class that strong at the top. And then with Kobe’s death, it added more focus.”

Also, in honor of both of Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, the league changed the All-Star jerseys this year so that Team LeBron is wearing No. 24 in honor of Bryant and Team Giannis is wearing No. 2 to honor Gianna.

And in Saturday night’s dunk contest, Dwight Howard — once a teammate of Bryant with the Lakers, once a competitor in the 2009 NBA Finals, and now a Lakers player — wore a Superman cape reminiscent of his previous dunk contest victory. The one difference was that his outfit had Bryant’s uniform number 24 on the front where the “S” would be.

Morehouse College Becomes First HBCU To Have A Polo Team

Morehouse College polo club

The Morehouse College Polo Club has been officially declared a member of the United States Polo Association, an esteemed honor that makes the school the first historically black college and university (HBCU) to embrace a polo team.

The Morehouse club was co-founded in 2019 by Miguel Wilson, founder of Ride to the Olympics Foundation, with Morehouse students Rian Toussaint, Justin Wynn, and Caleb Cherry as its first members according to The Washington Informer. “We would like to officially welcome Morehouse College to the family! Morehouse will be playing out of the Atlanta Regional Polo Center with Jolie Liston and Frankie Questel,” Amy Fraser, director of Intercollegiate/Interscholastic Polo, said in a letter addressed to Morehouse.

The idea originated from Cherry’s polo coach, who suggested that he start a team at Morehouse. Cherry competed in dressage for 10 years before and started playing polo five years ago. He is the only player on the team with prior experience with horses, according to Atlanta Daily World.

Through Ride to the Olympics, the students received scholarships that support their membership of the Morehouse Polo Club, giving them access to horses, riding lessons, and appropriate gear and allowing them to compete against other polo teams, both domestic and international.

Established in 2017, Ride to the Olympics’ primary mission is to empower youth who aren’t exactly born with great means with the opportunity to learn the art of equestrian sports, fashion, and leadership development. The program is also committed to increasing awareness and exposure to horse-related sports such as polo, showjumping, and dressage throughout the country.

Last September, Wilson’s foundation raised additional funds for the team through its annual Atlanta Fashion & Polo Classic event, where high-profile Atlantans and celebrities attended to support the Morehouse Polo Club.

Tiger Woods Considering Joining New Premier Golf League

Tiger Woods Net Worth

There is a new, proposed golf league being formed and after being approached by them, Tiger Woods is thinking about playing in it, according to ESPN.

The Premier Golf League is proposing an 18-event tour from January to September. Each event would be 54 holes and have no cuts. The weekly $10 million in prize money would appeal to a 48-player field before a season-ending championship. The total prize fund for the tournament will be $240 million. The tour would probably have an impact on the PGA Tour and European Tour if it the league materializes.

“My team’s been aware of it and we’ve delved into the details of it and are trying to figure it out just like everyone else,” Woods said Tuesday at Riviera Country Club, where he is hosting a tournament. “We’ve been down this road before with World Golf Championships and other events being started. There’s a lot of information that we’re still looking at and whether it’s reality or not, but just like everybody else, we’re looking into it.”

As expected, there is a slight pushback from the PGA Tour organizers. In late January, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan warned players that competing in the Premier Golf League could lead to disciplinary measures and loss of eligibility with the Tour. “If the Team Golf Concept or another iteration of this structure becomes a reality in 2022 or at any time before or after,” Monahan said in an email, “our members will have to decide whether they want to continue to be a member of the PGA Tour or play on a new series.”

Woods also added, “I think that just like all events, you’re trying to get the top players to play more collectively. It’s one of the reasons why we instituted the World Golf Championships, because we were only getting together five times a year, the four majors and The Players, and we wanted to showcase the top players on more than just those occasions. We came up with the World Golf Championships and we’re meeting more often.

“So this is a natural evolution, whether or not things like this are going to happen, but ideas like this are going to happen going forward, whether it’s now or any other time in the future.’’

Medicare Age And Eligibility Requirements

When Are You Eligible For Medicare?

If you’re looking to sign up for Medicare in the near future, knowing when you’re eligible for enrollment is an essential part of the process. You qualify for full Medicare benefits beginning at age 65 if:

  • You are a citizen of the United States or permanent legal resident who has lived in the U.S. for at least five years; and
  • You’ve worked for 10 years and paid Social Security during that time; or
  • Your spouse worked for 10 years and paid Social Security during that time; or
  • You are divorced but were married for at least 10 years and would have qualified through your ex-spouse.

You may also qualify for Medicare before the age of 65 if:

  • You have received Social Security Disability benefits for 24 months.
  • You have end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and have been on dialysis for three months or have had a kidney transplant.
  • You have been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS).

Applying For Medicare When You Turn 65

If you are planning to apply for Medicare when you age into eligibility at 65, here’s what you need to know:

  • You can apply for Medicare three months before your 65th birthday, the month you turn 65, and three months after your 65th birthday.
    • If your birthday is in May, for example, you may enroll in the months of February, March, April, May, June, July, and August.
    • This time period is known as your Initial Enrollment Period. During this period, you can sign up for Part A, B, C, and D.
  • Part A is mandatory and covers costs associated with hospital visits.
  • Part B is optional but highly recommended and coverage costs associated with doctor visits.
  • Part C (Medicare Advantage) is optional and is a cost-saving option if you want Part A, B, and D combined with other benefits such as vision and dental.
  • Part D is optional but highly recommended and covers costs associated with prescription drug coverage.

You must sign up for Medicare Part A during this period even if you’re not going to quit working. You do not have to apply for Part B until you start receiving retirement benefits (see the below section on special enrollment), but you do need to apply for Part A.

If you are applying for Medicare in full and you are not working, you must sign up for all Medicare programs you want to join. This means if you want Part B and D, you need to sign up for both when you sign up for Part A. If you’re going to sign up for Medicare Advantage, you also need to do so during your enrollment window.

If you apply for Part A on time but you wait to sign up for Part B, there will be a 10% increase on your premium for each year you delay enrolling. For example, if you sign up for Part A during your Initial Enrollment Period in 2020 but put off signing up for Part B until 2025, your premium fee increase will look like this:

   2020   2021  2022 2023 2024 2025
Late Fee 0%  10% + 10% + 10% + 10% + 10%
Part B Premium $100  $110 $120 $130 $140 $150

What if you miss this period? There are two other time slots for enrollment: your Special Enrollment Period and open enrollment.

Special Enrollment Period

If you plan to work and receive health insurance through your employer, you can delay applying for Medicare Part B until you begin receiving Social Security or railroad retirement benefits. Once your employment ends and you start collecting retirement, you will be automatically enrolled in Part B as long as you signed up when applying for retirement benefits. If you did not sign up for Part B when applying for retirement benefits, or if you want to sign up for Part C or D, you may do so during this period.

From the time your job ends, you have eight months to enroll in Part B. If your employment ends in April, you will have May, June, July, August, September, October, November, and December to apply for Part B. This is known as your Special Enrollment Period. Special enrollment only applies to those who are still working and who will continue receiving healthcare through an employer.

Open Enrollment Period

Open enrollment applies to anyone who missed their initial or special enrollment periods or an enrolled person who desires to switch plans. If you missed your initial or special enrollment periods, you may apply during the Open Enrollment Period, but there will be a penalty.

The period for open enrollment occurs yearly from October 15 through December 7.

Morehouse College first HBCU to have a polo team

Morehouse College has found itself in the throws of history with the first Polo Team at an HBCU.

Earlier this month, the Morehouse Polo Team took to Instagram to share a picture of the team and announce that they were official.

“Say hello to our Polo Team! These men are making history as the World’s FIRST polo team ever to be created at an HBCU. All made possible by visionary and co-founder @miguelwilsoncollection alongside co-founder and team captain @cabester99official,” they wrote.

The Washington Informer reported that the team was put together last year by Miguel Wilson who also founded the non-profit organization Ride to the Olympics. According to the org’s Facebook page, it is aimed “to eliminating barriers, strengthening communities, and helping youth in need reach their full potential.” The team consists of members Rian Toussaint, Jayson Palmer, Justin Wynn, and Caleb Cherry.

Because of Them We Can reported that last fall, Ride to the Olympics was able to raise money for the Morehouse Polo Club through its annual Atlanta Fashion & Polo Classic event, where Atlanta influencers and celebrities come out to support the foundation.

Bossip reported that last week, the team received its first official membership acceptance letter from Amy Fraser, Director of Intercollegiate/Interscholastic Polo.

“We would like to officially welcome Morehouse College to the family. Morehouse will be playing out of the Atlanta Regional Polo Center with Jolie Liston and Frankie Questel.”

Morehouse has previously made headlines for amazing monetary gifts, which include when Oprah Winfrey donated $13 million to the college last fall, making her endowment the largest in the school’s history. Month’s earlier, billionaire Robert Smith announced during the school’s commencement ceremony that he vowed to pay off the debt for the entire class of 2019. He later announced that he would also pay off their family’s debt as well, which would total up to $34 million.

LaVar Ball Asks Sons to Fund Big Baller Brand Rebirth

LaVar Ball

Looks like the “ball” is in his sons’ court! LaVar Ball, father to NBA player Lonzo Ball and international player LaMelo Ball, has asked his sons for money to invest in the Big Baller Brand that he started several years ago, according to the New York Post.

On a recent episode of Ball in the Family, the Facebook Watch reality show that follows the lives of the Ball family, LaVar tried to encourage his sons to reinvest in the apparel company. “The more special you get, all these people will be coming in with all this other s–t because everybody want a piece,” he says in a clip. “What we got going on is gonna be a billion-dollar thing—everybody gotta put their teeth in it somewhere. And as a family, we just gotta stick together. Like, OK, we good. Put your money over there. My money over here … Melo over there. And we put all our money together, that’s where the venture capitalists come in and say, ‘We got a hundred mil’ for y’all.’ We don’t need to have a hundred mil’. We got it right here if we put our (sh–) together.”

Last year, due to discrepancies found during audits of Ball’s Big Baller Brand, co-founder Alan Foster was fired for allegedly embezzling funds. Back in March of 2019, Lonzo told ESPN that he believes Foster, a friend of LaVar’s for almost a decade who owns 16.3% of Big Baller Brand, had “used his access to my business and personal finances to enrich himself. As a result, I have decided to sever all ties with Alan, effective immediately.”

LaVar put out a statement at the time, “Unfortunately, Alan Foster continues to try and leverage the Ball family name for his own gain. Alan Foster is a convicted felon who served seven years in jail for defrauding people out of their money. He is a thief and con man and cannot be believed or trusted.”

Lonzo and LaMelo went public about separating themselves from the company while middle brother LiAngelo stayed with the brand. Lonzo, who played for the Los Angeles Lakers last season, is currently playing for the New Orleans Pelicans, while his brother LaMelo is expected to be a high NBA draft pick after the season. LiAngelo joined the Oklahoma City Blue, an NBA G League team, as a practice player in December.

Michelle Obama gets real about life after the White House

Former First Lady Michelle Obama recently sat down with friend Oprah Winfrey to discuss her journey after the White House.

During Winfrey’s 2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus tour, sponsored by Weight Watchers, she and Obama took the stage at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York to discuss life after her husband’s, Barack Obama, term as president ended in January 2017. The full interview aired on Feb 12.

During the interview, Obama went on to tell Winfrey that she is still on a mission according to The Root.

“The next phase of my journey of becoming is really continuing to make sure that what I do has meaning and purpose to somebody outside of myself,” she said. “I want to empower the next generation of politicians, and community activists, and teachers and doctors and lawyers. I want to be a part of laying out a set of values and principles that we can all be proud of; of this country.”

Obama is now a best-selling author and Grammy winner thanks to her book “Becoming,” which is now the best-selling memoir ever, and its Audiobook. Still, she told her friend Winfrey that she remembers where she came from.

“I’m Michelle from the South Side of Chicago,” she said. “[W]e were raised with the [idea that] that’s enough. You be grateful for what you have and you don’t look at the next thing. You be happy with what you have, and that’s how we worked in the White House. That didn’t change because we moved to a different house…The House didn’t define us, it’s the values that defined us.”

The former First Lady and the president are now empty-nesters now that their daughters Malia, 21, and daughter Sasha, 18, are college students. Obama went on to explain that it is important for their daughters to find their own way. She said it was also important that they were “checked by somebody younger than me.”

“They cannot define themselves by looking at each other or looking at me or their dad,” Obama said. “They have to take the time to get to know themselves—give themselves a moment to figure out who they want to be in the world, not who they think I want them to be, not what the rest of the world says about them, but to really think about how they want to shape their lives and how they want to move in this world. So, I don’t want them measuring themselves by external influences, and for young girls, that is hard to do.”

With this being Valentine’s Day weekend, of course, many find themselves looking Obama and her husband for love inspiration. Obama has always kept it real about how much hard work goes into their marriage and according to The Root, she said they are finally seeing each other for the first time in a long time.

“You can have chunks of hard, bad times and if that’s how you define your marriage by just the hard times, then you’ll miss the truth of what’s really there,” Obama said.

R. Kelly faces new sexual abuse charges ahead of April trial

R. Kelly already has a lot to worry about ahead of his April trial in Chicago and now he has been hit with even more charges of sexual abuse.

According to Complex, Kelly is facing a whole new indictment that will include more sexual abuse allegations. This indictment, which was filed on Thursday, will add a new victim to the case while removing another. These new developments have the possibility of delaying the Chicago trial as the now-disgraced singer is set to appear in an arraignment at the Dirksen Federal Courthouse in Chicago.

In addition to being charged in Chicago, Kelly has also been indicted in Brooklyn and Minnesota. He is facing charges that range from child pornography, obstruction of justice, and racketeering; he has also been accused of getting a fake ID so that he can marry the late singer Aaliyah, who was 15 at the time they were married, while Kelly was 27, which was added after his New York case was revised.

Next month, Kelly’s lawyers will have the chance to see the names of the accusers added to the New York case during the revisions. In January, a judge ruled that there was substantiated claims that Kelly would interfere with the case from jail, Complex reported. Gunman walks into Kandi Burruss’ restaurant Old Lady Gang and shoots three people

An unknown male walked into “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Kandi Burruss‘ popular Atlanta restaurant Old Lady Gang (OLG) and shot three people.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, on Valentine’s Day night, while several people were celebrating the holiday with a night out, a man came into the OLG location in East Point targeting another man. After firing multiple shots, the man also hit two bystanders who were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“We were waiting for our spot at the Juicy Crab and we were waiting outside actually at that bench right there,” witness Brynae Kinsey told CBS 46. “We heard two gunshots and I seen somebody run out that door, and I ran…I just heard her scream ‘ahhh,’ and then I heard two pops. Pop, pop. I just wondered what was going through his head for him to pop off like that.””

AJC reported that another witness described the chaotic scene when the shots were being fired.

“While they were back there cooking and stuff, they just heard gunshots,” Ricka Franklin, whose brother works at the restaurant, said. “All of a sudden, the customers ran to the back where they were.”

East Point police Capt., Allyn Glover told AJC that they are still looking for the suspect.

Burruss and husband Todd Tucker opened OLG in 2017 with the Southern-style menu paying homage to Burruss’ mother Joyce Jones and aunts Bertha Jones and Nora Wilcox. The restaurant’s planning and the opening was well-documented on “RHOA.” The notoriety made the eatery very popular among locals and tourists, sometimes there were lines outside of the door. OLG’s first location was so successful that the couple decided to open up the second location in East Point in 2018, AJC reported, which was also documented on the reality show.

As of Saturday morning, neither Burruss nor Tucker have commented publicly regarding the shooting,

California School District Names Elementary After Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama

The Wilson Elementary School in Richmond, California, will be renamed as Michelle Obama Elementary School when it reopens later this year, according to Newsweek.

The unanimous decision was made recently among board members of the West Contra Costa Unified School District after considering a proposal from the school’s Parent Teacher Association for the school to be renamed in honor of Obama, whose name is synonymous with her support of education and children’s health programs, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

“Naming this school after Michelle Obama is a sign of the school’s rebirth,” Stephanie Hernandez-Jarvis, the president of the board, said in a statement. “The parents and students advocated to rename their school after Michelle Obama because they believe the values our former First Lady embodies and the educational, child-centered causes she champions are representative of what we all aspire to nurture in our school communities.

Obama was a huge advocate for education during her time in the White House and continues to advocate for students. President Barack Obama and the first lady launched the “Let Girls Learn” initiative in 2015 to raise awareness and ensure adolescent girls around the world are ensured the right to an education. There are several other initiatives led by Obama supporting post-secondary education, the necessity of school counselors, education for African Americans, and art education, to name a few according to theedadvocate.org.

The elementary school, which was formerly named after Woodrow Wilson, will be the second school in California to be named after Obama, the school district says, with the other in Panorama City in Southern California. The school is currently being hosted in a temporary campus in El Cerrito while its Richmond location at 42nd Street and Roosevelt Avenue is being developed into a new “state-of-the-art 21st facility,” according to the statement, the East Bay Times reports.
