Karen Civil Opens Up on Achieving Balance While Building Multiple Businesses

Karen Civil

Karen Civil has made a name for herself as a social media and digital media marketing strategist. For over a decade, she has built her personal and professional brand into prominent roles at Beats by Dre and Universal Music Group early into her career.

In 2008, Civil launched KarenCivil.com, an industry insider look into hip-hop. Two years later, she founded Always Civil Enterprise, a full-service branding and marketing powerhouse that specializes in the imaging of brands and creating a foundation of endless success and visibility.

Now, as a leading lady on the digital side of marketing, Civil’s work spans from the entertainment industry to politics. Her clients range from rapper and entrepreneur YG to Hillary Clinton. And she is known for being a cultural architect in the corporate space. In 2018, she helped open the first smart-store, the Marathon Clothing, in Los Angeles with the late, great Nipsey Hussle as her business partner.

Civil is also an author, philanthropist, and STEM advocate for children. As a businesswoman, she is known for being ambitious and unapologetic. We caught up with Civil at Fueled by Culture and spoke with her about what it takes to make it as an entrepreneur in the digital space. During our conversation, Civil kept it real about the sacrifices that come with success.

What goes into the business side of building a brand?

People tell me that I make it look easy and that they want to do what [I] do. Or they say, “I just want to hang out.”

Before the “hangout” or getting paid to do things that you love, [you have to understand that] there’s a lot of sacrifices that come with that. The time and dedication that you put into your career and craft is something that I don’t necessarily apologize for.

Everybody is not built to be a CEO. Everybody is not built to be an entrepreneur.

I always ask people, “Do you hate your job?” They say, “Yes.” Then I ask them, “Do you hate working 40 hours a week?” They say, “Yeah.” And then I tell them, “You probably wouldn’t be cut out to be an entrepreneur. Because it requires more than 40 hours a week.” I’m sending emails at one in the morning and at 3 p.m. because I work across different time zones. I put in 120%.

You’re surrounded by so many influential people and have deep, long-lasting relationships. How important is being relational and authentic?

Being authentic and having great relationships are two things that I live by. I’m not a character. I’m not a gimmick. I’m just authentically myself. And I tell people to do the same thing.

I don’t necessarily look at titles. I don’t walk into a situation and treat the CEO better than the janitor. To me, you should give more respect to the janitor because at the end of the day, you’re gonna lose them keys and need to get into that office. I’m grateful for all people in different places from different walks of life.

How do you practice being healthy and whole as you do the work?

Right now I’m going through a fasting phase for 90 days. And I’m not doing it for any religious reasons or anything like that; I’m doing it for my own sanity. But I am somebody who is spiritual. I light my candles; I have sage in my home; I talk to God; and I follow the Muslim prayer.

I live off inspiration. The first thing and last thing I see are quotes on my walls on my doors, it’s not the TV. That’s what keeps me going and inspires me.

What is next for you as you build and inspire?

My Live Civil imprint is something that I care about deeply. It’s my foundation. I have a school in Haiti and I also have a computer lab. My goal is to put my second computer lab, because it’s important to me, for kids in Haiti to have the same opportunity I did to get to know the world around them. Them being able to log on to the computer, do their homework, learn different languages, and see what’s happening outside of their community to broaden their horizons, is exciting to me.

Dwyane Wade Still Worries About Being Broke

Dwyane Wade

There is one thing that retired NBA legend Dwyane Wade should never have to worry about and that is financial ineptitude. Despite making millions and primed to make several more, the former Miami Heat superstar has a fear of not having money.

“It takes moments sometimes when I’m like, ‘Huh, that’s what I got in the bank, OK.’ But I still live with that mentality [of not having money] like literally, I have one car. And I have an Audi Q8,” Wade told Yahoo! Finance.

Not including his endorsements, Wade earned more than $120 million in a successful 16-year NBA career with the Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls, and Cleveland Cavaliers. In addition, he inked a comprehensive, multiyear agreement with WarnerMedia, released a new sneaker with Rick Ross to continue his Way of Wade sneaker line. His fashionable sock line, PKWY, founded in 2013, is available nationwide at Target stores. Chinese consumer electronics brand Hisense recently inked Wade as its first U.S. brand ambassador. Wade also has a lucrative lifetime contract with the Chinese sneaker brand Li-Ning.

Wade was a three-time NBA Champion (2006, 2012, and 2013) and 13-time All-Star selection. In 2006, three years after first joining the Heat as the No. 5 overall draft pick, he led the Miami Heat to its first-ever NBA Championship and was named MVP of the Finals. In 2004, he created the Wade’s World Foundation, which provides support to various educational, health, and family service programs, in particular, those that benefit underserved communities in Miami and his hometown of Chicago.

In 2011, Wade was appointed to President Obama’s Fatherhood Task Force. In September 2012, he became a New York Times best-selling author, with the release of his first book, A Father First: How My Life Became Bigger than Basketball.

Pioneering NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson of ‘Hidden Figures’ fame has died at 101

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — NASA says Katherine Johnson, a mathematician who worked on NASA’s early space missions and was portrayed in the film Hidden Figures, about pioneering black female aerospace workers, has died.

In a Monday morning tweet, the space agency said it celebrates her 101 years of life and her legacy of excellence and breaking down racial and social barriers.

Johnson was one of the so-called “computers” who calculated rocket trajectories and earth orbits by hand during NASA’s early years.

Until 1958, Johnson and other black women worked in a racially segregated computing unit at what is now called Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. Their work was the focus of the Oscar-nominated 2016 film.

In 1961, Johnson worked on the first mission to carry an American into space. In 1962, she verified computer calculations that plotted John Glenn’s earth orbits.

At age 97, Johnson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

Johnson focused on airplanes and other research at first. But her work at NASA’s Langley Research Center eventually shifted to Project Mercury, the nation’s first human space program.

“Our office computed all the (rocket) trajectories,” Johnson told The Virginian-Pilot newspaper in 2012. “You tell me when and where you want it to come down, and I will tell you where and when and how to launch it.”

In 1961, Johnson did trajectory analysis for Alan Shepard’s Freedom 7 Mission, the first to carry an American into space. The next year, she manually verified the calculations of a nascent NASA computer, an IBM 7090, which plotted John Glenn’s orbits around the planet.

The Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation Donates $5 Million to New Jersey After-School Program

Oprah Winfrey

The Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation has given a $5 million donation to  Pathways to College, a Newark, New Jersey-based and nationally-operated after school program that helps prepare students of color for a college education, according to NJ.com.

The program aims to expand the pipeline to college in underserved communities. The program also works toward:

  • Creating a nationwide, networked community of high-achieving primarily minority children.
  • Assisting these students, with their families, to become knowledgeable, attractive college applicants, students, and successful graduates.
  • Partnering with colleges, schools, and communities to provide ongoing, consistent encouragement and support to these children.
  • Building on the examples our students and teachers set, helping foster and support a school-wide cultural change that emphasizes academic and career achievement.

The founder of Pathways to College, Judith Griffin, received that important phone call last September from then-president of the Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation, Rebecca Sykes.

“Words cannot express how grateful we are for Ms. Winfrey’s support of Pathways to College,” Griffin said in a statement. “Ms. Winfrey’s extraordinary generosity will help us partner with an increasing number of schools that want our help and set in place the necessary plans to inform and involve local donors to help supply funding beyond what is possible for schools to absorb. We are deeply grateful to her.”

In a video, Winfrey said: “I celebrate and honor the work Pathways to College does in securing futures for young people who want to go to college. I am proud to sponsor and support all of these young people and their dreams for a better life through education.”

Will Laila Ali come out of retirement to fight Claressa Shields?

For the past several days, Laila Ali and Claressa Shields have traded smack talk about a potential fight between the retired heavyweight and the current female boxing champ.

Ali says if the money is right, she will fight.

READ MORE: Laila Ali talks about her boxing legacy and her secrets to maintaining a peaceful family home

“It would be my absolute pleasure for the right amount of money to come back” Ali told ESPN‘s First Take.

“We want to see women grow and continue to inspire other people, right? And she has been calling me out, and she has taken offense to some things that I have said in the past that had nothing to do with her. And people have asked me, would you come back? Well, I have to be inspired by the opponent, I have to be inspired by the ‘purse’ because I have multiple things going on and multiple streams of income I don’t need to do it and I have to want to do it.”

Ali has been retired for over a decade, but she tells First Take she has maintained her health and fitness and could get the job done.

Shields said she is ready and willing to fight Muhammad Ali’s daughter, anytime, anywhere, and that she will knock her out if given the opportunity.

“Absolutely. I have no problem with that,” Shields responding when ESPN’s Myron Medcalf asked her if she would fight Ali. “I feel like I’m the greatest woman of all time. I cannot be beat, not by a champion right now, a former world champion, a champion who’s bigger, stronger, faster, whatever you want to say. All these fighters have to prove it to me. And when she gets inside the ring, I have a game plan for everybody who I step in the ring with. And the fact that she’s going to bring out that 100% in me, you’re going to see a whole different Claressa Shields. And it’s going to be a war.”

And Shields, 24, wants Ali to leave the excuses at home.

“Let’s not talk about age. You can’t say in one sentence, ‘Oh, I’m gonna knock Claressa Shields out, I’m a better fighter, I’m gonna come out of retirement and I’m gonna do this, but I’ve been retired 13 years.’ Take the 13 years out of it, or you can’t say, ‘but I’m 42.’ She’s making excuses already. ‘Oh I’ve been retired 13 years. Oh, I’m 42,’” Shields said. “If you really feel like you’re the baddest, you’re either going to come out of retirement and beat me at the age you’re at, or you’re going to leave boxing alone.”

Further, Shields said an unnamed person has already put up $15 million for the two to fight, with $5 million going to the loser and $10 million being paid out to the winner.

Many on social media seemed excited about the prospect of a bout.

“Laila Ali said she hasn’t fought in 13 years, but she’ll knock a bitch out for the right price! And she was not playin!!!! 24-0 and 21 knockouts! Shiiiitttttt,” Big Mama tweeted.

Black Twitter responds to Red Table Talk promo clip of Snoop Dogg episode

A Red Table Talk promo clip with Jada Pinkett Smith telling Snoop Dogg that his profanity-laced Instagram video skewing Gayle King actually insulted all Black women was met with scorn and agreement by Black Twitter.

READ MORE: Snoop Dogg set to appear on ‘Red Table Talk’

In the clip, Pinkett Smith tells Snoop that she was shocked when she first heard his comment.

“When you first came out and you said what you said in regards to Gayle, my heart dropped,” Pinkett Smith. “I felt like not only were you talking to Gayle, but you were talking to me… I was like, ‘Not Snoop.’ And so that’s one of the reasons why I felt like I really wanted to have this conversation with you in the spirit of healing.”

Black Twitter had a lot to say about the clip. Many backed Snoop and said King deserved to be cussed out. Some slammed Red Table Talk for seemingly siding with King. Others thought the rapper took it too far.

“Is @RedTableTalk the new sunken place? @SnoopDogg RUN RUN RUN RUN and never return unc!!!!!!! You did the right thing by calling out YEARS of hack journalism and disrespect, please run from this table and never look back,” tweeted Regina&Roger.

“@jadapsmith you know good and well that @SnoopDogg wasn’t talking about you. He was talking to @GayleKing because she deserved it. She was wrong for that insensitive interview with Lisa Leslie. @SnoopDogg don’t keep apologizing. You were right,” wrote Keisha W.

“When is Gayle coming on to apologize for her tasteless conduct,” added OurStory.

About a week after Kobe Bryant died last month in a helicopter crash, King did an interview with his longtime friend, former WNBA star Lisa Leslie, and among the questions she asked Leslie, she brought up Bryant’s 2003 rape case.

“It’s been said that his legacy is complicated because of a sexual assault charge, which was dismissed in 2003, 2004. Is it complicated for you as a woman, as a WNBA player?” King asked Leslie during the interview.

“It’s not complicated for me at all,” Leslie responded.

King asked Leslie whether she thought it was fair to bring up the rape charge and Leslie responded that the rape case was dismissed so she thinks it’s time for the media to stop asking about it, particularly since reporters had the opportunity to address it while Kobe was still alive, but didn’t.

The questions pissed off a lot of people, Snoop included. He, along with several other rappers, including Boosie Badazz and 50 Cent, blasted King for the interview.

Still, while some people questioned King’s motive or need to ask the question, they thought Snoop was wrong in his approach.

“Every woman in this comment section that thinks what Snoop said was acceptable is a disgrace,” tweeted Necole Kane. “He would never to Martha Stewart but again, the black woman is the most disrespected woman in America.”

Snoop later issued an apology to King.

“Two wrongs don’t make no right. When you’re wrong, you gotta fix it,” Snoop, whose birth name is Calvin Broadus, Jr., said in an IG video. “So with that being said, Gayle King: I publicly tore you down by coming at you in a derogatory manner based off of emotions. Me being angry at questions that you asked …overreacted. I should have handled it way different than that.”

“I would like to apologize to you publicly for the language that I used and calling you out of your name and just being disrespectful,” the Los Angeles rapper added.

    King accepted his apology.

READ MORE: How Jada Pinkett Smith schooled an ‘incredibly apologetic’ T.I. during a candid ‘Red Table Talk’

Now Snoop will appear on Facebook Watch’s Red Table Talk, alongside Jada, Willow and Adrienne, this Wednesday.

“@snoopdogg is coming to @redtabletalk Wednesday, February 26th to have an in-depth and insightful conversation about The Culture of Disrespect Between Black Men and Black Women. Join us” Pinkett Smith captioned her Instagram post about the upcoming show.

FreakNik To Return This Summer As 3-Day Festival Called Freak World

    Freanik

Get ready for it. FreakNik is returning. This summer. The legendary Black Spring Break event in Atlanta, Georgia, will return as a three-day festival called Freak World. It will feature more than 40 artists performing during the weekend.

Freak World will run June 19-21 at the Cascade Driving Range in southwest Atlanta.

Carlos Neal, of Atlanta-based promotion company After 9, decided last year to bring back the infamous Atlanta event “with a daylong concert at Cellairis Amphitheatre at Lakewood. A lineup featuring Project Pat, Uncle Luke, Da Brat, Foxy Brown, and many more nearly sold out the venue and attracted an adult audience old enough to remember the rambunctious Freakniks of the past, but young enough to still party responsibly,” WSBTV reported.

“For everyone who said, ‘This isn’t the Freaknik of the ‘90s,’ I’m like, look, we’re older now and most people got that and still had fun,” Neal told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. This year’s event will be for 18 years and older.

The 2020 festival has been expanded to three days.

“I wanted to do it in a community where people embraced this event. I chose the community where I grew up because I wanted the dollars to impact that community,” he said. “So I wanted to do it in a predominantly African-American neighborhood.”

Nealis also working with Atlanta festival promoter Eric Barnes and they also plan to feature more than 100 vendors and schedule about 40-50 acts. Nealis expects the three-day event to attract more than 10,000 fans per day.

Freaknik originally started in 1983 as a small gathering but by the ’90s, hundreds of thousands of people flocked to the event. It was during this time then-Mayor Bill Campbell’s staff decided to stop Freaknik, as the community thought it had gotten out of control. Freaknik was initially conceived at Spelman College by club president Skyla Goodson. And at first, attracted HBCU students on spring break, eventually, people from all over the country began attending.

By 2010, then-Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed banned any Freaknik-related activities.

There’s even a podcast reminiscing about the early days of Freaknik called “Freaknik: A Discourse on a Paradise.”

Some don’t seem happy to see Freaknik return in any form. While some people tweeted about the chaos and potential crime the event could bring to the area, others tweeted that the culture has changed too much to revisit the event. As one person tweeted: “As much as I love the effort… The social environment that made freaknik legendary doesn’t exist anymore tbh.”

Dr Nikki Bell, aka The Lip Doctor, Builds Two Cosmetic Practices in NYC

lip doctor, dentist, esthetics, cosmetic, dentist, doctor

Long Island native Dr. Nikki Bell, also known as “The Lip Doctor” is not your traditional dentist. As a result of fusing dentistry and advanced esthetics, she has risen to great heights and is currently operating two medical practices.

Bell attended Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York, on a full academic scholarship and soon after her dental pursuits began with studies at Meharry Medical College. She received a degree as a doctor of dental surgery in 2001 and then went on to complete a dental graduate-level residency program. Shortly thereafter Bell began her quest to develop a private practice.

Currently, Bell shares two New York locations, in Freeport and downtown Brooklyn, where, as a cosmetic dentist she is certified to treat with lasers and performs most procedures without the use of a drill or anesthetic. This specialization makes her techniques cutting edge and in high demand. She treats all phases with specialized services in dental implants and facial esthetics.

Black Enterprise had the opportunity to speak with The Lip Doctor about her passion for cosmetic dentistry, the business of building a practice, and how healthcare providers can expand their practices and services.

How were you able to transition your cosmetic dental practice into a cosmetic dental medi/spa?

As a doctor of dentistry, I traditionally deal with the head and neck so there was somewhat of a natural progression. I was specializing in reconstructive procedures but there were some things that I could not address when a patient had an asymmetry or deficiency. The lasers I invested in, along with fillers, Botox, and my injectables, provided me the ability to do more. I then incorporated skincare and the spa element for the health benefits.

What differentiates your personal brand and the brand of your practice from others?

My ability to incorporate many different services allows us to achieve the best results for my patients. I quickly became obsessed with being able to utilize my devices along with my skill level to help my patients. Once my patients saw the results, they began to trust me as more than just their doctor, and my patient base grew organically. I believe that this trust factor, along with having a high skill level with a wider spectrum of procedures, is what separates me from others in my field.

Is there a lack of representation of people of color in your profession?

I do not see a lot of people in my profession who look like me, and I emphasize that because there is a broad spectrum of people that I treat who may not receive the care they need. As a doctor, there is a lot of pride that I feel in my services and products because I truly want people to feel like their skin matters. I developed a product line about a year ago beginning with a lip plumper. The product line has now expanded into a makeup line, lipstick line, along with face care products.

What one piece of advice do you have for young women and men of color building their career in the esthetics industry?

It is critical that we understand the importance of us being in this field and to take it seriously. Studying and staying abreast of new technology as it comes out is important. There is neglect for those within our community. Just like we have limited resources in our community we also have limited services in respect to our health whether it is skincare or cosmetic dentistry.

Birdman talks new Cash Money docuseries and squashing beef with Lil Wayne

Birdman dropped by Everyday Struggle to promote his upcoming Cash Money docuseries, New Cash Order.

The new Spotify docuseries recently premiered and it follows Cash Money from its beginning stages in New Orleans to how it grew to become one of the biggest rap labels to ever exist. The series includes never before seen interviews and also archival footage offering a behind the scenes look at the players behind the label, according to Complex.

READ MORE: Birdman says he’s finally ready to get his face tattoos removed

During the visit, Birdman also dished on his relationship with Drake, Lil Wayne, and Nicki Minaj, all of whom were once on the Cash Money Label.

“I got a great relationship with Drake, I got a great relationship with my son Wayne, always looked at Nicki as a little sister,” Birdman said in the interview, reported Complex. “Everybody in a good space, we put the past behind us and we’re moving forward.”

When probed deeper as to whether Birdman still worked with the three performers, he said: “Of course, I’m forever in business with them. As long as they in that building over there, I’m forever in business with them.” Nicki is still signed to Cash Money, however, Drake and Lil Wayne’s most recent albums came out on OVO/Republic and Young Money/Republic respectively, according to Complex.

Birdman and Wayne had beef in the past, but that’s been squashed according to Birdman.

“We happy as a motherf*cker, man, we came up,” Birdman said during the interview. “That sh*t forever behind us, I gave him whatever he want.”

Weezy performed at the recent All-Star game, after which Birdman said he spoke with him and he claims Wayne told him that he “couldn’t have done it” without him. Birdman said he responded to Wayne: “I’m really proud of you, bruh, like for real for real.”

Birdman said while things are good with Cash Money artists, he’s not sure where things stand with Rick Ross.

“I haven’t seen this man. I don’t put no energy into that,” he told Everyday Struggle. “I’m trying to get billions of dollars in this sh*t, I ain’t ever put no energy to no other n***a. I hear that sh*t and I keep it moving, but when we do see each other we’ll see how that turn out.”

In addition to the New Cash Order docuseries, Birdman said he’s also executive-producing She Ball, the new movie that Nick Cannon wrote, directed and is starring in.

Tyson Fury gives Deontay Wilder first pro loss with 7th round TKO

A rematch that boxing fans have been eager to see over a year ended with Tyson Fury stopping heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder in the seventh round to win his WBC heavyweight championship and resining his lineal heavyweight championship.

One of the most anticipated bouts in history went down Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in front of a sold-out crowd of 15,816.

The first fight between the two was a highly competitive slugfest that resulted in a draw. This time, Fury clearly outboxed his opponent and scored two knockdowns on the way to collecting the WBC championship

belt. Fury entered the fight at 274 pounds, which was 16.5 pounds heavier than their first fight, ESPN reports.

Along with a change in his weight, Fury entered the fight with a new trainer, Javan “Sugar” Hill, who is the nephew of legendary trainer Emanuel Steward. After leading a celebration sing-a-long of “American Pie” by Don McLean, Fury would show appreciation to his opponent.

“A big shoutout to Deontay Wilder,” Fury said. “He came here tonight and he manned up, and he really did show the heart of a champion.”

Deontay Wilder’s ear was bleeding throughout the fight, leading many who watched to believe the fighter had lost his equilibrium and was potentially concussed.

In the seventh round Wilder appeared to be on wobbly legs and trainer Mark Breland threw in the towel, however. Wilder expressed that he would have preferred to continue.

“Things like this happen. The best man won,” Wilder said, according to CBS Sports. “My coach threw in the towel and I was ready to go out on my shield. I make no excuses tonight. I just wish that my corner would’ve let me go out on my shield. I’m a warrior.”

The loss was the first for Wilder aka the “Bronze Bomber” who is considered a knockout artist. His record now stands at 42-1-1 with 41 KOs.

For Fury, many want him to fight Anthony Joshua in efforts to become the undisputed champion, however, Wilder can evoke the rematch clause for this fight within 30 days and it can lead to a trilogy.

TV host and lifestyle expert B. Smith dies of Alzheimer’s

Television personality, fashion model and entrepreneur B. Smith has died at age 70 after a seven-year battle with Alzheimer’s.

Smith’s death was confirmed by her husband Dan Gasby, stating she died Saturday night in her Long Island, New York home from early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

“Heaven is shining even brighter now that it is graced with B.’s dazzling and unforgettable smile,” Gasby wrote in the post.

Smith was diagnosed with the disease in 2013 and began to promote awareness about the disease and the African-American community, the New York Daily News reports.

    B. Smith was born Barbara Smith and started her career as a model before becoming the host of the television show “B. Smith With Style”. She also owned three B. Smith restaurants, published cookbooks and partnered with retailers Bed, Bath & Beyond, La-Z-Boy and Walmart for home goods, says the Chicago Sun-Times. Her B.Smith with Style Home Collection was the first from an African-American woman to be available at a nationwide retailer.

After being diagnosed, Smith released her 2016 book “Before I Forget: Love, Hope, Helps, And Acceptance in Our Fight Against Alzheimer’s”, a look into her life.

“Two out of three people with Alzheimer’s disease are women,” Gasby said to USA Today in 2016. “Blacks are two to three times more likely to have Alzheimer’s. … And it drives people into poverty, in many cases taking away the gains that a sizable and growing portion of people in the African-American community have made.”

Peers and friends honored Smith’s life in tweets. ”The elegance. The grace. The style. #BSmith was one-of-a-kind,” Ava DuVernay tweeted.

“We lost legendary fashion model, chef, restaurateur, lifestyle icon and magazine publisher, B Smith today,” Al Roker tweeted. “70 years old, she and her husband, Dan Gasby were at the forefront of #alzheimers #research for people of color. Love to them and daughter, Dana.”

Rest in peace to the one and only B. Smith. You will be missed. Rest well.

Black Woman Becomes the First Doctor to Cure Cancer in Mice Using Nanoparticles

    cure cancer

Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green has become the first person to successfully cure cancer in mice using laser-activated nanoparticles, according to Black Culture News.

Unlike traditional cancer treatments, Green’s revolutionary and unique nanoparticle technology, which was found to successfully cure cancer after testing on mice within 15 days, does not require chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. Green received a $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to expand her nanoparticle cancer treatment research.

Green’s interest in cancer treatment stems from witnessing the death of her aunt, Ora Lee, who suffered from cancer, and her uncle, General Lee Smith, who also was diagnosed with cancer and experienced the negative side effects of chemotherapy treatment.

Green is, not surprisingly, highly educated. In her pursuit to fight cancer she obtained her bachelor’s degree in physics and optics from Alabama A&M University and later earned her master of science in physics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, both of which she received full scholarships for. After earning her degrees, she transitioned to the Comprehensive Cancer Center for five years and the Department of Pathology for one year, according to afrotech.com.

Currently, Green’s Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation, the nonprofit she founded in memory of her aunt, is continuing to fight cancer using laser-activated nanoparticles and focusing on its mission to make cancer treatment accessible, affordable, and effective. She devotes time to helping young black students as well.

Strides in cancer treatments/cures are very important. According to the American Cancer Society, in the U.S. alone, an estimated 606,520 people will die from cancer in 2020. This equates to 1,660 people dying of cancer each day in 2020. Approximately 69% of people diagnosed with cancer between the years 2009 and 2015 were alive five years after their diagnosis. This is higher than people who were diagnosed with cancer between the years 1975 and 1977. Between these years, 49 out of 100 people, or 49%, were alive five years later.

Model, Restaurateur and Author, B. Smith Dead at Age 70 of Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease

    B. Smith

Barbara Elaine Smith, professionally known as B. Smith, died Saturday, February 22, 2020 of Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease, according to her family.

The 2010 Black Enterprise’s Women of Power Legacy Award Recipientwas known for hosting her own television show, owning high-end restaurants and being an esteemed published author.

As a young girl raised in rural Pennsylvania, she sold lemonade, magazines, fund-raised and had a paper route. After begging her parents to attend modeling school, she picked up beauty skills and then cold called magazines to pitch herself to editors. Smith went on to became one of the first African American women to grace the cover of Mademoiselle in 1976. From there, her modeling career took off, bringing in a living that allowed her to follow an entrepreneurial love of cooking.

Her signature tagline, “Whatever you do, do it with style!” has been on display at Smithsonian The National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Meet The Three Brothers Who Are Launching A Black-Owned Kentucky Bourbon Brand

    Kentucky Bourbon Brough Brothers

Three brothers are planning to launch their own Kentucky bourbon through their company Brough Brothers Distillery in honor of their surname.

According to BlackBusiness.com, it will be one of the only black-owned distilleries in the country and the first black-owned business of its kind in the state of Kentucky. The trio of brothers—Victor, Christian, and Bryson Yarbrough—went on their own separate paths as they progressed through life but came back together to start this business venture. Their goal was to create their own products to make an impact locally and globally.

Victor, who has been abroad in England for the last 10 years, initially came up with the idea of bottling wines and other drinks in the U.K. He and his brothers are hoping to expand their reach to other areas by exporting their products while also making them available locally.

The distillery, which will be built on 2,200 square feet, will house the Kentucky bourbon production as well as a taste-testing room. They have chosen to establish it on the West End as it has shown great potential for revitalization.

“Realistically we’re going to be producing gin and vodka as well as bourbon,” Victor, the CEO of Brough Brothers Bourbon, told WHAS11. “We’re doing our job to help promote Kentucky outside of the U.S.”

“It’s a fantastic feeling but for us, it’s all about giving back to the community,” he continued. “We want to give back to the city just from our knowledge of pretty much going around the world. We wanted to be able to focus all that knowledge back into the city and give back.”

The company, whose bourbon is currently distributed through Amazon in the United Kingdom, expects to officially launch in Louisville next month, according to Louisville Business First. The brothers say they hope to hire four people at the distillery once it’s up and running.

Black Doctors Unite To Open The First Black-Owned Urgent Care Center In Chicago’s Southside

    Chicago Urgent Care Black Doctors

Last spring, a group of black doctors, Reuben C. Rutland, MD, Airron Richardson, MD, Michael A. McGee, MD, and former NFL player Dr. Gregory Primus, teamed up to open the first black-owned urgent care center in Chicago’s Southside Hyde Park neighborhood.

“We live in the neighborhood and recognize when our children were injured or sick there was no urgent care nearby,” Dr. Airron Richardson, co-founder of the urgent care facility told ABC7Chicago. “You had to go to a completely different neighborhood several miles away.”

Premier Health Urgent Care looks to reduce the lack of access to adequate health services.  The center wants to provide the community proper access to basic services while also including other important services, mental health and wellness.  Many times individuals go straight to the local hospitals for basic health services which often can be the most expensive and most inefficient way of delivering healthcare.

“So you have the choice of waiting eight hours in the emergency department for something minor, or coming to an urgent care and waiting 10 or 15 minutes and getting it done,” Dr. Rutland explained to ABC7Chicago.

Premier Health wants to be an affordable healthcare source for the community treating everything from the common cold to bruises and sprains.

“We are happy to open an urgent care in Hyde Park because the community needs it. I see so many urban professionals who either delay or go without care because of time constraints. No one has 8 hours to wait in the emergency department for a minor illness or the flexibility to wait 3 weeks because their primary care doctor is booked solid. We are here to help fill that gap,” says Dr. Rutland in The Chicago Crusader. “We are not in competition with the doctors’ offices or the emergency department. We are a supplement to them both, to help relieve the stress on those two facilities.”
