Kentucky woman says it took 9 days to be tested for coronavirus

A Lexington, Kentucky woman knew she had COVID-19 for nine days, yet she was turned away from testing by her local health department, hospital and doctor’s offices.

Fatima Warren, 45, who lives with her 87-year-old grandmother and 13-year-old son, told the Louisville Courier-Journal she went through countless hoops and was repeatedly denied testing even though she had a persistent fever, fatigue and body aches. Warren, a speech pathologist, claims she was denied because she didn’t fit into a narrow criterion of having traveled overseas recently.

She told the paper that this criterion is inherently biased against low-income people, many of whom are Black and other people of color, who may have the virus but won’t be tested because they haven’t traveled internationally.

On March 10, at the urging of her boyfriend, Warren drove herself to the emergency room at the University of Kentucky Medical Center when she became so sore and feverish that she knew something was definitely wrong. She said she called on her way to alert hospital officials that she was coming and that she thought she had coronavirus.

Warren said the person who took her call told her she could come right in. Doctors tested her for every illness known to man— except for COVID-19, Warren told the Louisville Courier-Journal. When they found nothing, they sent her home.

Knowing that the one test they didn’t give her could prove what she felt she had, Warren self-quarantined, staying away from her son and grandmother as best she could.

When her temperature continued to rise the next day, she said she called the Baptist Health emergency room, but was told to contact her doctor’s office. Her doctor’s office told her they couldn’t fit her in, so she drove to an urgent care center.

Once again, she was tested for many things except the coronavirus, even though the nurse reportedly told her that she’s a candidate for the potentially deadly virus and that she needed to be tested.

But when the nurse practitioner called the state and local health officials, she was told not to test Warren as she was low risk.

Warren was sent back home.

This scenario replayed itself several more times before she was finally tested, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Last Tuesday, one of Warren’s friends relayed that she had heard about a doctor in Lexington, named Dr. John Richard, who was testing people without following guidelines established by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

READ MORE: Harvey Weinstein tests positive for coronavirus, moved to isolation

Warren was tested at Dr. Richard’s office and her suspicions were verified: she tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

In that time period, who knows how many people Warren could have infected. She can barely remember everyone she was around in the early days of first feeling the symptoms.

Twin brothers say Sacramento cops beat them during false arrests

Twin brothers Carlos and Thomas Williams have filed federal discrimination lawsuits against police in Rancho Cordova, California for allegedly beating, choking and arresting them after they were mistaken for burglars outside of Carlos’ house.

According to the lawsuits, Carlos was outside showing Thomas a new water drain he had installed last March when a couple walked over and asked the men “What the f— are you doing on this property?” The couple reportedly called police, accusing the Black men of being burglars, and Rancho Cordova police responded with their guns drawn and yelling for the brothers to “get your f—— hands up.”

READ MORE: Black Portland man awarded settlement in racial discrimination lawsuit

The lawsuits, which also name Sacramento County and the particular officers involved in the incident, accused police of roughing up the men before slapping handcuffs on them and carting them off to jail – even after police saw Carlos Williams’ driver’s license which listed the house as his address and after they received confirmation from a neighbor that he lived in the house, reported The Sacramento Bee.

Still, police arrested the brothers, charging Thomas Williams of felony assault and Carlos Williams of resisting arrest. Prosecutors later refused to file charges.

“This is a case of police brutality,” Thomas Williams writes in his lawsuit, which points out that he works as an educator and founder of a school for children with disabilities, according to The Sacramento Bee. “Sacramento County and Rancho Cordova violated Dr. Thomas Williams’ constitutional rights and California civil rights when they arrested two African American brothers outside of their own home purportedly on suspicion of burglary.”

The lawsuits accuse police of excessive force and false arrest, among other claims.

“The police officers arrived at the scene and immediately drew their guns, screamed profanities at the brothers, placed one brother in a chokehold, and beat them both into unconsciousness. The brothers attempted to convince the officers that they were residents, but the officers did not care,” Thomas Williams’ lawsuit adds.

The Sacramento Bee reached out to the Rancho Cordova Police Department for comment. A spokeswoman referred questions to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, which oversees and operates the department. The Sheriff’s Office declined to comment.

Since the March 23, 2019 incident, one of the lawsuits claim police officers continue to harass Carlos by engaging in a “coordinated intimidation campaign, involving unmarked cars repeatedly circling Carlos’ home, spotlights shining brightly into Carlos’ home at night, and frequent flat tires to Carlos’ vehicle.”

NBA star Jamal Murray says Instagram was hacked after posting explicit video

Denver Nuggets star Jamal Murray apologized to his fans on social media yesterday, saying his Instagram account was hacked after a graphic video of him engaged in a sex act surfaced.

Murray, 23, deleted the video on Saturday night, but not before it was copied and shared across social media platforms.

“First and foremost I would like to apologize to my fans. My account has been hacked, currently working on the issue. Thanks,” Murray tweeted to his fans on March 22.

His girlfriend, Harper Hempel, pleaded with people on Twitter to stop sharing the video.

“If you have the video please delete it,” Hempel tweeted.

But people took the opportunity to laugh at Murray and Hempel’s expense, responding to both of their tweets with memes and crude messages.

“Embrace it and laugh it off it’s the only thing that you can do. The internet now owns it,” responded George the Horse to Hempel’s tweet.

One sent a split-screen photo of Murray’s pubic hair with a close-up shot of NBA star Kevin Durant’s hair.

“Good to see Jamal Murray and his girl being safe on IG during the Coronavirus outbreak,” tweeted Alvin Gentry Burner, including an edit to the photo with a blue mask placed over Murray’s girlfriends face.

Murray had gone viral last week over a video clip of him playing the piano while social distancing.

“Music is there through the good times and bad! It gets you through anything and right now it’s all I need, love learning new tunes. Anybody know these tunes? Stay home and stay safe everyone!” Murray tweeted in the March 17 video clip.

But even that post was taken over by people after the explicit sex video went viral.

“Jamal on piano, his girl on flute,” tweeted @foxxinsox.

Report: Coronavirus Is Putting The US Prison Population At Risk

Prison population

The global spread of the coronavirus, the virus that causes COVID-19, has left many communities in shambles; trying to their best to contain and combat the spread of the disease. For one group of Americans, the virus has left them both exposed and abandoned by their government—the prison population.

The coronavirus has officially entered the prison system. The New York Daily News reported this week that an inmate from Rikers Island in New York City had tested positive for the virus. While the infected individual has been quarantined from the general population, prisons are the ideal setting for an outbreak to spread quickly. Mayor Bill de Blasio has said that the Office of Criminal Justice is working with others in custody and at high risk of becoming infected to potentially be removed.

“When are we going to get a public explanation from the mayor about the city’s plan to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the jail system?” said VOCAL-NY’s Civil Rights Campaign Director Nick Encalada-Malinowski to the New York Daily News. “It’s just another indication that this administration does not give a damn about incarcerated people, their families or their communities.”

The Legal Aid Society is also calling for most suspects to be set free during the coronavirus crisis. Many critics have said that inmates who are infected and are ill should be up for release to go to a proper facility for treatment. New York has become one of several states where the prison population is becoming more and more at risk to infection.

“Today’s confirmed case is more reason why New Yorkers currently incarcerated in the city jails must be screened and released from custody immediately,” said Tina Luongo, Attorney-in-Charge of the Criminal Rights Practice at Legal Aid. “Over the past week, we have received multiple complaints from clients concerning the lack of basic sanitation measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 at local jails, and the situation will undoubtedly get worse in the coming days.”

Report: Virus Threatens To Wipe Out 14 Million Jobs in U.S.

jobs

A report released this week shows more than 9,000 jobs have been lost in the aftermath of the Coronavirus outbreak and as many as 14 million jobs could be lost due to the virus.

According to a report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, which tracks jobs by industry around the country, the entertainment and leisure industry has been hit the hardest by the coronavirus outbreak. More than 8,000 jobs in the field have been lost and, according to Andrew Challenger, Senior Vice President of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, more job cuts are coming.

“Job cuts will continue due to this outbreak as companies prepare to put business on hold for at least a month. More hotels, restaurants, and bars will undoubtedly make major cuts in the coming weeks,” Challenger said.

The report added that due to mandatory closures of non-essential businesses, more than 14 million jobs in leisure and hospitality are at risk. CNBC has reported that upcoming weekly unemployment claims will reach unprecedented heights, leading to the White House asking state officials to hold unemployment numbers in an effort to keep the stock market calm.

Although the future might look bleak for some, other industries, including online grocery stores are thriving. Amazon and other retail giants are now looking for extra workers. The New York Post reported Amazon is trying to buy four Fairway Stores locations in New York and New Jersey in order to deal with the rising demand in online orders. Trader Joe’s will share the increased profit with its employees.

According to the report, healthcare workers around the country are being called out of retirement, while research scientists, biologists, and pharmacists are being hired to help develop a vaccine. Shipping and trucking companies are hiring extra workers to keep the U.S. supply chain moving. Janitorial companies that specialize in deep cleaning services are also in high demand.

Harvey Weinstein tests positive for coronavirus, moved to isolation

Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has the coronavirus.

Several days after he was sent to the Wende Correctional Facility in upstate New York, Weinstein tested positive for COVID-19. The 68-year-old is now in medical isolation at the prison, a New York law enforcement official told Deadline. A second prisoner at Wende is also in isolation with the disease.

READ MORE: Harvey Weinstein sentenced to 23 years in prison for sex crimes

Officially, New York State’s Department of Corrections declined to confirm the news, citing a policy that they “cannot comment on an individual’s medical record.” And the producer’s PR chief Juda Engelmayer team said they have “not heard anything like that yet,” adding, “I can’t tell you what I don’t know,” reported Deadline.

Weinstein was moved to Wende on March 18 from New York City’s Rikers Island. It is unclear whether Weinstein contracted the virus at the prison, which is east of Buffalo, New York, or while he received medical treatment in Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan a few weeks ago. Authorities reportedly don’t believe he contracted the disease on Rikers Island because he was in medical isolation while there.

One thing is known— New York state has been hit harder than any other state with the disease. Roughly 40 inmates at Rikers were diagnosed with COVID-19 in the past week, according to Deadline.

Earlier this month, Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison for sex crimes. He was also sentenced to five years of probation after his term is fulfilled.

Justice James A. Burke handed down the sentence to Weinstein for raping Jessica Mann and forcibly performing oral sex on Miriam Haley, his production assistant, according to The New York Times.

The case catapulted the #Metoo movement onto the national stage, and dozens of women went public with their stories of sexual misconduct by Weinstein.

READ MORE: Weinstein’s lengthy prison sentence should shut the ‘Whatabout’ crowd up for good

Weinstein, who was once a beloved Hollywood producer, was convicted for the rape of Mann in 2013 at a hotel in Midtown Manhattan. He was also convicted of forcibly performing oral sex on Haley in his Lower Manhattan apartment in 2006, The New York Times reported. The jury acquitted him of two more serious charges of predatory sexual assault which would have potentially put him away for life.

In addition to his recent sentence, Weinstein also has a retaliation case pending from Ashley Judd, a sex-trafficking class action lawsuit to face and now another recent lawsuit was slapped on him from a woman who claims Weinstein abused her when she was 16.

Kelis Teams with Netflix to Host Food Competition Show ‘Cooked with Cannabis’

Kelis

Apparently, there’s another meaning to the phrase “wake and bake.” Singer Kelis Rogers has cooked up a reality TV show with streaming giant Netflix, according to Food and Wine Magazine.

The Netflix competition series, Cooked With Cannabis, will span six episodes. And since we are talking about cannabis, naturally, the series will debut on April 20. The show will be co-hosted by Kelis and chef Leather Storrs.

Kelis happily share the news via her Twitter account.

Former talk show host Ricki Lake, actress Mary Lynn Rajskub, and rappers Too $hort and El-P are slated to appear as guests.

Cooked with Cannabis is a show where weed is a seasoning rather than the reason. It’s granular, educational, heartfelt, and smart,” Storrs told Food & Wine. “The contestants had personal and romantic relationships with the herb and they knew its intricacies: medically, chemically, spiritually and as an intoxicant. Further, there was a real sense of community and camaraderie.”

On each Cooked with Cannabis episode, three professional chefs work against a timer to create a three-course meal based on various themes, ranging from world cuisine to futurist food that, of course, that include cannabis. The winner goes home with $10,000.

“It moved your heart in ways you didn’t expect it to because it is so culturally important,”  Kelis said, who added: “In this country, there are so many things that have been used systematically to oppress groups of people, so this could be all fun and games, but you look at it and go, ‘You know what, this is important. People’s lives have been affected in a really positive and negative way, and how do we take some control back?'”

Beyond The Return: 28-Year-Old African American Relocates To Ghana, Starts Food Truck Business

Ghana Food Truck

When I lived in Africa for nearly a decade, the question I most got from locals was: why would an American move to Africa? Many African-Americans are moving to Africa, particularly to Ghana.

For 28-year-old Deijha Gordon, her decision to leave Brooklyn, New York, for a life in Ghana was prompted by a sense of duty to help. When she visited Ghana the first time, she saw that it was nothing like the “negatives, starving children, dirty roads, huts” that people in the U.S. are fed about Africa.

Her impression about the continent changed the moment she landed at the Kotoka International Airport, she told ABC News‘ Adwoa Tenkoramaa. She felt a sense of belonging and a feeling that she’d been “here before.”

Gordon had been working an 8-to-5 job at the U.S. postal service for eight years. Even though she earned enough to live a decent life and cater for her travels and education, it wasn’t enough after her visit to Ghana. She wanted to become an entrepreneur and she wanted to do it in Ghana.

Now she’s the owner of a food truck business, Deijha Vu’s Jerk Hut at East Legon. She sells food including rasta pasta, rice and peas (what many in Ghana call waakye), and her “rather special spicy chicken with a doughnut,” ABC News reported.

“So Deijah Vu’s, apart from my name being Deijha, the meaning of deja vu is a sense of feeling like I am already here,” she said. “That is the feeling I got when I first set foot on this continent. When I got off the plane, I was kind of nervous simply because of what they show us in the States. There were so many things running through my mind but as I got off the plane and stepped out into the atmosphere, I felt OK and I was happy that I made the decision.”

The truck is located at Base Camp Initiatives, a co-working space for startups on a budget known in the residential area of East Legon, Accra.

“I don’t regret coming here. I feel like it’s the best decision I’ve made so far. I’ve met so many great people. I have had so many great opportunities. Coming here allowed me to go to South Africa. I made a lot of friends and I have no doubt that Deijha Vu’s will be very successful. So many people have been hitting me up about it and they are anticipating the grand opening. I’m just excited about it,” she added.

Her truck employs three permanent staff and several temporary staff.

MIT makes plans for a quieter campus

With thousands of MIT students and employees now engaged in working and learning off-campus as part of the Institute’s response to Covid-19, a newly formed Campus Space Planning Working Group is developing a framework to temporarily manage access to MIT’s buildings.

This framework is the latest step in MIT’s efforts — ongoing for several weeks now — to safeguard the health of faculty, staff, and students by promoting social distancing and minimizing the density of the on-campus population.

Focusing MIT’s support services on its active buildings will also help essential staff who remain on campus — including employees of MIT Facilities and the MIT Police — take care of those facilities that remain in operation, and protect the safety and security of those who are still living and working on campus.

“This effort is part of a phased plan that reduces the number of buildings operating with full support services,” says Associate Provost Krystyn Van Vliet, co-chair of the Campus Space Planning Working Group. “At the same time that we are temporarily redefining the campus footprint, we aim to maintain safe campus operations and sufficient access by the MIT community to ensure the Institute’s academic, research, and business continuity for all of us.”

A plan for consolidated operations

As of today, some buildings on campus are already secured and inaccessible to the MIT community — such as the Stratton Student Center (Building W20). By this Wednesday, March 25, MIT aims to limit access to most buildings across campus, and streamline support services in many buildings that are now in limited use. All residence halls housing students will continue to be fully supported.

Buildings will remain accessible to four previously identified groups: critical research personnel; those involved in scheduled recording of academic lectures; essential personnel from departments such as MIT Facilities, MIT Police, MIT Medical, MIT Dining, and MIT Environment, Health, and Safety; and vendors supporting critical research infrastructure.

Beyond these groups, individual campus buildings will remain accessible to MIT community members who request and receive approvals from department heads, deans, or other senior administrators. These campus leaders will soon receive guidance on this facilitated access.

The new approach will continue to provide access for MIT community members who need it, and for those who help steward those buildings’ operation. Members of the MIT community who are not in the four key groups described above, and who have not received special permission from campus leaders, will need to have their MIT IDs when on campus, to identify themselves to MIT Police and other personnel. They will be expected to comply with social distancing guidelines while on campus. Individuals who are not holders of MIT IDs will be asked to leave campus buildings.

“While this change in campus access may feel like an inconvenience for some of us, these unusual times require a shared understanding that typical use of our buildings depends on significant efforts by behind-the-scenes staff teams,” Van Vliet says.

“In the current climate, we are focused on balancing the well-being of our workforce and the need to maintain critical Institute operations,” adds Joe Higgins, vice president for campus services and stewardship and co-chair of the Campus Space Planning Working Group. “Many adjustments have been made regarding how we carry out our work — to promote social distancing, enhance cleaning methods, manage materials, enhance security, control access, and implement regular check-ins for limited-use buildings. While security, fire, water, and infrastructure alarms in all buildings will continue to be managed and monitored, we are implementing best practices in energy management for limited-use buildings that will help the Institute conserve resources.”

The campus access framework provides several campus locations for MIT community members who need “quiet space” for individual study, online meetings, or to record lectures. Clear guidance to the MIT community on this facilitated access will be provided in the coming days.

Emergency housing for students

Approximately 245 undergraduates who received exemptions and remain on campus have been assigned emergency housing in three dormitories: Maseeh Hall, McCormick Hall, and Baker House. These students are moving into their emergency housing this weekend, with support from MIT staff.

A fourth undergraduate dormitory, Burton-Conner House, has been designated for students — including those who live off-campus, in the Boston area — who may need quarantine (due to exposure, risk factors, or symptoms) or isolation (for those who have tested positive and need care, but whose condition is not severe enough to require hospital care). This facility will be staffed with medical professionals to assist in these students’ recoveries.

“Our goal is to support those students who remain with dining options, as well as expert in-house medical care, should they become ill,” says Suzy Nelson, vice president and dean for student life. “We are making every effort to care for those students who remain with us during this public health crisis.”

In keeping with advice from public health officials, all students in MIT emergency housing will be dispersed as widely as possible, minimizing the density of occupancy, and will be encouraged to practice social distancing.

Ice Cube’s Big3 Wants A Quarantined Basketball Tournament in April

Big3

With no NCAA March Madness and a suspended NBA season, basketball fans are hungering for action. O’Shea Jackson, better known as rapper/actor Ice Cube, wants to fill the void with his Big3 league, according to Yahoo Sports.

Due to the cancellation and suspension of basketball games throughout the country because of the coronavirus, the Big3 plans to launch a quarantined, reality show-style three-on-three tournament in April. The main purpose is to curb the nation’s appetite for basketball in the aftermath of the coronavirus-driven sports hiatus.

“As long as we can protect the players, which we will do through proper testing and quarantine, Ice cube and I feel we can give fans some safe, entertaining brand of basketball to get everyone through this pandemic,” entertainment executive Jeff Kwatinetz, a cofounder of the Big3 basketball league, told Yahoo Sports.

“Cube and I have been in the entertainment business for 30 years. This is our job. People want to be entertained with all we’re going through and enjoy our sports. We think this will help.”

Ice Cube and Kwatinetz have held discussions with multiple TV networks since last week to broadcast the tournament. The thinking is that with the current crisis showing no signs of abating, the games would garner international interest, sources said. The preseason basketball tournament would most likely feaures 16 to 22 players quarantined in a house with a basketball court in the Los Angeles area. The players would only be accepted after they tested negative for coronavirus.

The premise of the tournament would also be filmed as reality TV. The players would be quarantined in the same Los Angeles mansion, with all activity regarding games, preparation and the players’ daily lives being recorded. There would be seven rounds of games, with teammates reshuffling after the first round. When a player racks up three losses, he is eliminated. Cash prizes totaling millions of dollars will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place individual winners.

As of now, the Big3’s 2020 regular season will start June 20 in Memphis.

Meghan Markle drops title after exit from royal family

Meghan Markle and husband Prince Harry are no longer their royal titles.

The change became apparent when on Saturday, Smart Works, a charity where Markle is a patron, removed all mentions of her as either “HRH” or “royal” on the group’s website. The charity, which just last year unveiled a capsule collection to help women find employment, has now replaced “Our Royal Patron,” with “Our Patron, The Duchess of Sussex,” according to People.

Markle and Harry struck an agreement with Buckingham Palace in February to exit their royal duties without keeping their royal titles. The decision erupted in controversy, with Harry offering harsh criticisms of members of the British media for their vicious attacks on Markle and their son, Archie.

“While The Duke and Duchess are focused on plans to establish a new non-profit organization, given the specific U.K. government rules surrounding use of the word ‘Royal,’ it has been therefore agreed that their non-profit organization, when it is announced this Spring, will not be named Sussex Royal Foundation,” a spokesperson said in a statement about the couple’s decision, writes People.

Prior to Smart Works changing Markle’s title on its website, People reported that Harry asked in February to simply be introduced as Harry when he participated in the Travalyst working summit in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Sabrina Dhowre became the latest celebrity to test positive for coronavirus days after husband, Idris Elba, announced that he had tested positive.

While speaking to Oprah via livestream on her Apple TV+ series, “Oprah Talks”, the model told the talk show host that it was her instinct as a wife to stay by her husband’s side after his diagnosis.

The couple have been quarantined together for several days after Elba took to social media to announce that he had coronavirus. The actor said he was inspired to do so after Tom Hanks opened up about his diagnosis.

“We didn’t change the way we interacted,” Dhowre during the livestream.

“I could have made a decision to put myself in a separate room or maybe stay away and I’m sure people are making those decisions, they’re tough decisions to make. But I made the decision to want to be with him and still touch him.”

Elba believes he and his wife contracted the virus at about the same time, he told Oprah.

If You Want To Connect To the African Diaspora Abroad, Consider Learning This Language

If you interested in doing anything kind of business abroad, it is very important to learn a second language to appeal to local vendors. For those interested in doing business across Africa, you may want to consider learning some French.

With the rise in DNA testing, popularity of Afrobeats music, and interest in African culture with movies like Black Panther, there has been an influx of African Americans looking to African countries for tourism, business opportunities, and possibly to relocate.

“France is only one part of the French-speaking world,” said French President Emmanuel Macron in a speech, “and it does not “carry the fate of French alone.”

French is the fifth-most spoken language in the world, ranked behind Chinese, English, Spanish, and Arabic. This is largely thanks to Africans, specifically in West and North Africa. It is also considered the official language in 21 different nations and spoken widely across 29 countries, including Senegal, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, and Gabon. There are 300 million French speakers across the world and 44% of them are of African descent. By 2050, that number is expected to reach 85%.

Even non-French speaking countries like Ghana feature a raising number of university students enrolling in French language classes to increase job opportunities in other African nations. In a survey by Quartz Africa, between 80% and 100% of those polled expressed the desire to pass the language on to their children.

“The practice of French is increasing on the African continent,” Céline Desbos, the director of French courses at the Institute Français cultural centre in Dakar, told the BBC. “It’s a reality driven by demographics, and in West Africa, by countries surrounded by French-speaking neighbors who want to learn the language.”

If you are interested exploring and doing business across the continent, learning French can help get you closer to your goal.

These 5 Social Media Channels Are Bridging the Workplace Diversity Gap

social media diversity gap

Diversity is a hot topic among businesses, and it’s hard to find a company that doesn’t pride itself on its minority hires. But before looking at a company’s internal structure and how it actually performs in terms of promoting diversity and inclusivity in the workplace, we need to look at the ways that the diversity gap is narrowing.

Unsurprisingly, many social media channels—and no, we’re not talking just about Facebook or Instagram—are becoming bridges that help minority groups get representation and equal opportunities across any industry.

Want to see what social media channels are helping us close the diversity gap? Here are our top picks.

LinkedIn

Since LinkedIn was founded to be a social network for professionals to connect, it’s unsurprising that it helps job candidates connect with the right employers for them.

LinkedIn statistics tell us that there are more than 660 million LinkedIn users, 20 million job postings, and that 122 million users have been invited to apply for a job on the site. And paired with the rapid development of tech, we’re seeing companies reach more talent from farther shores.

Let’s look at Kenert Kumar, for example. Kumar was born and raised in India, and the common problem for people in the Asian country is lack of exposure and connection to North American companies. But because of a job posting he found on LinkedIn, Kumar was hired as the CTO at HostingFacts.com.

We can attribute this to LinkedIn’s emphasis on professional experience and posts over simply social sharing like the likes on Facebook. By establishing a niche specifically for job opportunities and personal and professional growth, LinkedIn users—regardless of their background—stand a chance to find their next opportunity while getting the right connections along the way.

Discord

You may not have heard of Discord unless you belong to the niche community of gamers on the internet. Discord was founded as a text and chat app that connects gamers in a dedicated online community just for them.

But it has since become a hub for game developers to reach up to 250 million gamers on the app so they can sell their own games, connect with beta users, and build relationships with fans.

Discord’s only criteria for downloading and joining its app is that you’re a gamer—regardless of gender, race, or creed. Its “About” page explains why it is such a big champion of diversity, especially in an industry that brings people from all over the world together:

“Gamers, nerds, moms, dads, engineers, designers, marketers, support. Discord is a small group of passionate gamers whose mission is to bring people together around games. Diversity and inclusiveness are a critical part of how we get there. We believe that with diversity comes a better product, better decisions, and a better work environment.”

Pixz

The diversity gap isn’t just a problem of opportunity. It can also be a problem of connection and inclusivity. And some social media channels are contributing to the divide, especially with highly targeted posts that appear on someone’s newsfeed.

Pixz is a new photo-sharing app that makes it easier for people to share photos from the same events or communities in which they belong—without relying on hashtags, perfect grids, and the pressure to become a social media influencer.

According to Pixz founder and CEO Michael Kelso, “Consumers have become numb and cynical of most brands on social media. The constant barrage of highly curated, highly targeted, and polished posts are turning people away from these platforms. It seems that more people are taking refuge in online communities and messaging apps devoid of ads and self-promotion.”

He continues, “Diverse and inclusive companies are starting to build private communities on social media where they can share more casually and engage their followers. In these private communities, brands are also able to crowdsource customer-generated content and receive feedback from their fans. All of this helps build trust and loyalty among consumers.”

Reddit

Sometimes the diversity gap isn’t because of a lack of opportunities and space for people to find their next career track—we see job sites and networks springing up to bridge this gap. But sometimes the gap is caused by a lack of resources and information, and Reddit, interestingly, is helping close that gap.

Users have created subreddits like the GetEmployed or Resume, thus indirectly bridging the gap between minority groups who might be looking for better opportunities but lack preparation and feedback.

On these subreddits, users are able to ask for résumé reviews, ask for job application advice, and also share employment stories—things that someone with fewer opportunities might not have any direct access to.

Girlboss

Girlboss began as a digital media platform and has since launched its Girlboss community, hailed by many as the “LinkedIn for women.” The community and networking channel launched after founder and CEO Sophia Amoruso found that women weren’t getting enough support, opportunities, and resources in the professional world.

The network allows women to create their professional profiles without emphasis on Instagram-worthy posts. Instead, it focuses on connecting women within smaller communities called “Girlboss Collectives” that provide support for women looking for jobs, trying to change careers, or run their own businesses.

As of this writing, so far only users from the United States and Canada are able to sign up for profiles, but Girlboss is working to expand its reach to communities across more countries in the future.

How can businesses use social channels to help bridge the diversity gap faster?

After all we’ve seen from these great social media channels that are bringing people together and offering much-needed support for minority groups, how can you use social channels—whether on this list or beyond—to contribute to bridging the diversity gap?

The answer is to start with the social media channels you’re already on.

Get to know your audience to see which demographics are following you. You can easily do this when you have the right social media analytics tools that tell you who’s following you and engaging with you.

So if you’re a business owner who wants to serve multiple groups regardless of race or gender, you’ll want to know if you’re reaching the right people—both consumers and even prospective hires.

And if you’re not, then you can start making shifts to resonate with more diverse groups. Learn from how these social media channels above are doing their part to bridge the diversity gap, and you can be on the road to a more inclusive and diverse business of your own.

Creative Director Delano A. Johnson Refuses To Live Talented & Broke

Delano A. Johnson

Being busy may be a selling point when talking to successful business people, as they tend to always occupy their lives with activities that keep them going. Delano A. Johnson is one of those people. Being a best-selling author, creative director, brand architect, and a leading authority on personal and corporate creativity has set the tone for him to ably advise those who want to incorporate the type of business acumen he possesses.

Johnson gave up some of that busy time to talk to Black Enterprise to allow us to venture into who he is and what Guinness Book World Record he intends to set this year.

What inspired you to start writing and what have you written?

It was at the young age of 17 that I first got the original title of my book “Talented & Broke!” After going through some devastating life changes including losing my mother (a drunk driver killed her in 2005), father figure and mentor with eight other people in a tragic plane accident in 2014 and lost the sister who raised me in 2015 to lupus. Lost my home, custody of my children, marriage and a myriad of things that led me to finally finishing my book and releasing it, sharing some incredible highs and devastating lows.

How do you separate and/or combine the business aspect with the creative process and decide which part to tap into more to succeed?

I understand that problems in business that may arise will need outside of the box thinking to out-think or outwit my competition. I definitely lean heavily on creativity for everything. Thus, I’ve been dubbed the #ceoofcreativity—this has allowed me to take Toys R Us in 2008-2011 from $50 million (m-commerce) to $750 million as their online creative director. When I saw what I did visually using creativity online for Toys R Us, I resigned to work for myself.

What would you say is the driving factor in starting and maintaining your own business and what do you suggest to anyone who has a passion to pursue it?

Great question! This covers chapters one and three in my book, Refuse To Live Talented & Broke!: Ten Keys To Unlocking Your Creative Earning Potential. In chapter one, I talk about your launching pad and what to do when even considering starting a business. Also, chapter three covers knowing your core gifts—the theme that drives your life. Many times, we want to start a business because someone had a great idea and shared it with us. Here’s the problem with that, if it’s not truly a part of your core gifts and passion—you will waste time chasing something you honestly have no true passion for. It’s better to do a deep dive into the core of who you are to really decide what business is a good fit for your temperament, personality, and drive.

When you have your speaking engagements, how do you prepare what you are going to talk about and how does that approach help you when doing so?

I love to get background on the premise and theme of the invitations I receive to speak. I find out who I will be addressing (age, gender ratio, college or corporate setting) so I can really tap into where my audience may be—and the different levels of belief systems. Some participants just want information, some want inspiration, but those who want true transformation are the ones I connect with the most. I share principles that changed my life. I talk about the deep dive I took into reading over 300 books trying to understand how incredibly talented people end up so miserably broke. I also explain that 98% of the population will experience some form of talented and broke phase, but what life designed as a life lesson some people have turned into a permanent lifestyle. I do a lot of mental preparation. I’ve spoken in rooms filled with millionaires one day then a homeless shelter and prison the next day. My preparation always consists of studying where people are internally, and externally—this usually is a big part of my prep. My approach always varies with prior insight on my intended audience. I love using visuals and clips to aid the process.

What are you currently working on and what will your plans be for growing your business?

I was recently named the COO of the Power Networking Conference headed up by Dr. George C. Fraser for the past 32 years. I am attempting to break a Guinness Book World Record with my present book, working on the content of my next book, Talented & Successful, as well as prepping a full film script on my first book. I run and design for Jonsehn Creative Group, my luxury branding firm servicing Fortune 100, 200, and 500 companies.

Kiana Calder is Creating Opportunities for Black Artists to Showcare and Sell Their Work

Kiana Calder The Unapologetic Art Expo

African Americans have long been sidelined from historical art collections in world-renowned museums, galleries, and auctions. All the while, black art, beauty, and culture continue to be appropriated and depreciated. However, Kiana Calder is on a mission to change that narrative by giving up-and-coming black artists the recognition they deserve.

In February, the Bronx native ended Black History Month by providing artists of color with a platform to showcase and sell their work and merchandise. Held on February 28 at the Crossing Art Gallery in Chelsea, Manhattan, the Unapologetic Art Expo celebrated and honored the long legacy of black art and the new artists making a splash in their local communities. As an art lover, Calder launched the annual event in 2019 as a way to foster and further the careers of emerging artists and curators. Her motivation was triggered by the lack of diversity she noticed at The Armory Show in 2018, which attracts an influx of international art enthusiasts.

The Unapologetic Art Expo

“I noticed that there was a lack of black and brown people within the crowd, and also [a lack of] black or brown artists as well,” she told BLACK ENTERPRISE. “I wanted to solve that problem by having my own platform where those artists get the recognition they rightly deserve and get to monetize their art.”

In addition to giving artists a platform, Calder selected black vendors to supply food and drinks for the event. “It’s all black everything,” she said. “Guests are being introduced to black vendors that they don’t even know exist.” She added, “That’s a huge factor because we’re giving everyone the opportunity to expand their brand and their business.”

Another driving factor of the event is helping artists generate revenue. “Less than 3% of museum acquisitions over the past decade have been of works of African American artists,” she said. Even at the National Gallery of Art, there are only 986 works by black artists out of the 153,621 total works. Meanwhile, The Met has only hosted eight exhibitions focused on African American artists in the past 10 years despite the fact the museum curates about 40 exhibitions every year. “For some strange reason, we’re always pushed in the back. And other people are able to come in and appropriate from our culture and benefit from it.”

Creatives also face barriers when it comes to getting exposure since many art exhibits charge artists to showcase their work and then take a percentage of their earnings after the event. Calder, however, doesn’t charge artists to participate in the Unapologetic Art Expo and only collects a mere fraction of the percentage that most exhibits take.

To help artists earn a living, she also encourages them not to undervalue their work. “I’ve noticed they’re extremely talented and they’re willing to negotiate the value of their art,” she said. “And it’s like, no, you don’t need to do that.”

Furthermore, in addition to her annual exhibit, Calder launched an online marketplace on her website. “This is a great opportunity for people to purchase art from our featured artists, especially with how creatives are being impacted right now,” she said.

“It’s imperative to continue to celebrate these artists because they’re entrepreneurs that rely on us to survive. We all have to do our part to make them feel supported.”

Lake Worth Beach commissioner blasts Florida mayor over coronavirus emergency powers

Lake Worth Beach City Commissioner Omari Hardy blasted Mayor Pam Triolo and City Manager Michael Bornstein during a contentious meeting last Thursday over the use of emergency powers as the coronavirus spreads, particularly in Florida.

The Palm Beach Post reported that Hardy confronted Triolo and Bornstein over allegations that people were being mistreated during the global health pandemic. Specifically, Hardy stated that Bornstein was “turning off people’s lights during a global health pandemic.”

He further accused the mayor of being complicit with those actions during the contentious two-hour meeting that has since gone viral. Despite the fact that Lake Worth Beach has not declared a state of emergency, Triolo still gave Bornstein emergency powers.

Bornstein admitted that on Tuesday, 50 customers had their power turned off. This action was taken before any statement was released about any services being stopped.

“This is a banana republic is what you’re turning this place into with your so-called leadership,” Hardy yelled at Triolo after she called a recess. “We cut people’s utilities this week and made them pay — with what could have been their last check — to turn their lights off in a global health pandemic. But you don’t care about that! You didn’t want to meet!

“You care more about your relationship with [Bornstein] than you do about the people that are out there working.”

READ MORE: Andrew Yang announces he’s donating $1M for coronavirus relief

Triolo repeatedly screamed that Hardy was “out of order” and taunted him about his upcoming election. Last November, he announced his decision to run for a seat in the Florida State House as a Democrat. She mocked him by implying that Hardy’s objection was a “dog-and-pony show” publicity stunt.

“You got a camera on that?” she asked.

Even after the recess was called, the arguing continued. Ultimately, there was a resolution passed affirming the mayor’s right to grant emergency powers. It passed 4-1.

Hardy emailed The Palm Beach Post that he regretted the back and forth that took place.

“But I had just watched our city manager lie and mislead about shutting off families’ utilities, and they didn’t want anyone to say a word about it,” Hardy wrote. “It was too hard to take.”

READ MORE: US senators sold major stock amid coronavirus fears just before market dropped

Hardy further took to social media and explained his actions which he felt were justified. He only that he should have kept his calm.

“Things got heated last night, but I don’t regret one word,” Hardy tweeted.

“We could’ve directed the City Mgr to stop shutoffs last week, when I requested an emergency meeting for that purpose. The Mayor said no. And then we cut off lights dozens of families! #COVID19”

Hardy declared that he was following the principle of #GoodTrouble.

“And my colleagues didn’t want to discuss it all, didn’t want to acknowledge what we had done, and I lost my cool. But sometimes you have to get into trouble to stand up for what’s right. That’s called #GoodTrouble.”

Bornstein has since released a statement walking back the actions taken earlier in the week. All customers who contacted his office had their services restored.

“There were customers whose service was temporarily suspended during the transition period earlier in the week before the suspension was fully implemented. Most contacted the City and they were reconnected immediately, and all fees and charges are being credited back to those customers,” he said.
