Why the buying Black trend should be a permanent lifestyle

OPINION: When the furor dies, and when the hashtags get quiet who will be there still doing the work to support Black businesses?

There is a fire spreading across the internet, across social media, and across the world. This fire is consuming, but not in the way you think. This fire is lighting up consumers to shop with Black-owned businesses.

Right now, buying Black is trending in a way that it never has before even with people who may never have previously considered it. The community of us who have been working to support Black businesses for years want to turn that trend into a lifestyle.

Read More: 50 + Black businesses to support during the coronavirus pandemic

In 2016, Jason Coles sat down with his phone and his laptop and started designing an app. He wanted to build a marketplace for Black brands. He didn’t have much of a budget or much spare time outside of work, but he built what he could, where he could, until the Shop Katika app and website launched as a marketplace for Black goods.

The same year, Anthony Edwards and Janique Edwards, a young husband and wife duo in New York, thought to themselves: “Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to easily find Black-owned restaurants in your area?”

Anthony, who is a software developer, built EatOkra, a Black-owned restaurant locator app, himself from the ground up. Up to 2019, he didn’t even ask for any payment from featured businesses.

Buy Melanin started out as just a thought in 2012 after Trayvon Martin was killed. Founder Samantha Siler became more engaged in dialogue with her peers about where we spent our money and the importance of strategically allocating our money to cripple systemic racism.

Buy Melanin has since blossomed with pop-up events accommodating close to 70 vendors, and an entire community of supporters of the buy Black movement engaging with the business every day.

Like these other young founders, I was inspired by passion. More than a year ago, I only had a Google Spreadsheet and a dream. I’d had a transformative idea to build a platform that would allow people to buy Black online in one centralized place, and I wanted to see if it was even feasible.

I started by texting out to a huge group of friends and family and asking, “if there were a Black-owned marketplace like Amazon, would you use it?” Folks almost unanimously messaged me back with a resounding “yes!” I followed up the message to ask what Black brands they were currently shopping with.

A lot of people never answered that message.

Many of the ones who did could only name one or two. On any given day, most of the people I messaged could break down racial and political issues to you in an intellectually-flawless manner. But that day, many couldn’t name a single Black brand they supported, besides a few natural haircare ones.

That told me that the work I was about to do was necessary.

I started building my spreadsheet by drawing from the seemingly endless sets of lists that zip across the internet every so often compiling Black brands that people should support. Some of the businesses on these lists had already come and gone, and the links were dead.

Others ended up not being Black-owned at all. I learned about the term Blackfishing through the hours I spent crawling the internet looking for Black brands, and finding that many use Black models to obscure foreign ownership.

I also found community. As I started learning the ins and outs of being a solo-preneur, from designing the site to learning about SEO, I also started to find other people working just as hard for Black-owned businesses.

(Photo: Adobe Stock)

Jason. Samantha. Anthony. Marvin Francois of OneKin. Dr. Kristian Edwards of BLK + GRN. There were so many people making contributions, large and small, to the growing movement of supporting Black businesses.

In the weeks following George Floyd’s murder, the support of Black-owned businesses has become much more widespread and reached almost a fever pitch. People who may have never even said “Black-owned” a day in their lives are suddenly looking for ways to spend dollars with Black businesses. It’s awesome to watch.

The current climate is validation that people need our work and that our businesses have support. But when the furor dies, and when the hashtags get quiet, who will be there still doing the work?

There is a community of us who have made this our livelihoods. Who have made it our business to further Black buying. Who have built the databases, relationships, apps, networks, knowledge, stamina, and teams with our blood and tears, even when it wasn’t trending.

We support not just the brands with marketing dollars and employees, but the solo-preneur outfits with multiple pulls on their time and resources. We have built each other up, we have given advice and time, and when the social media trends turn to other things, we’ll still be here doing the work of supporting all things Black-owned.

I want everyone to buy Black, support Black, uplift Black. Please support as many businesses and initiatives as you can find. Not just today or this month or this summer, but forever. It won’t undo all the harm we’ve experienced as a community, but it will help.

And, after social media efforts die out, buy BLACK. When the pop-up lists and websites are no longer being updated, buy Black. When the celebs and influencers have moved on to the next project, buy Black. Buy Black. Buy Black. Buy Black.

Beyoncé is faking being African American, congressional candidate says

A Florida Congressional candidate tweeted that Beyoncé is not African American.

“She is faking this for exposure.” KW Miller wrote, “Her real name is Ann Marie Lastrassi. She is Italian. This is all part of the Soros Deep State agenda for the Black Lives Matter movement.”

Miller finished his bizarre claim by stating, “BEYONCÉ YOU ARE ON NOTICE!”

The post instantly went viral and fans of the singer suggested that the man seek help.

Miller is running to represent the 18th Congressional District in Florida. The area is currently represented by Republican Brian Mast.

Miller did not end his rant there. He also alleged that the 24-time Grammy winner’s song, “Formation,” contains Satanic messaging.

“The song clearly admitted that she was demonic and that she worshipped in the Satanist churches located in Alabama & Louisiana,” he continued. “She keeps Satanist symbols in her bag.” Miller was referring to the line, “I got hot sauce in my bag, swag…”

Patti LaBelle is another Illuminati globalist puppet,” he wrote using a slur for Jews. He quoted the iconic singer’s 1991 hit song, “Somebody Loves You, Baby (You Know Who It Is)” as proof of her membership. “I’m under your spell. I don’t want to break free. You can make a slave out of me. I worship you and nobody else. I pledge my love to you forever.” Miller wrote, “Who was she professing this to? Moloch? Lucifer? Who?”

Holly Robinson Peete replied, “KEEP MS. PATTI’S NAME OUTCHA DAMN MOUTH.”

The man went on to rant about Communists, Marxists, and more.

And, of course, Miller tweeted that he “will run for President in 2024. I will achieve things no one knew possible from a President. They can’t stop me.”

Lawyers allege Breonna Taylor’s house was targeted because of gentrification plan

Lawyers for the family of Breonna Taylor alleged that the police squad responsible for her death, known as Place-Based Investigations, had “deliberately misled” narcotics detectives to target her home.

New court filings allege that the investigation was a part of a major gentrification project in western Louisville and that Jamarcus Glover was a “primary roadblock.” Glover was a ex-boyfriend of Taylor, with whom she maintained a “passive” friendship.

READ MORE: Breonna Taylor activists drag Kentucky AG for alleged engagement party

The complaint, which is detailed in the Louisville Courier-Journal, says that the Place-Based Investigations unit led narcotics detectives to believe that they were after a violent drug and crime ring.

“The execution of this search warrant robbed Breonna of her life and Tamika Palmer of her daughter,” Florida-based attorney Benjamin Crump, who is representing the family, told The Courier-Journal on Sunday.

“Its execution exhibited outrageous recklessness and willful, wanton, unprecedented, and unlawful conduct.”

However, a spokesperson from the Mayor’s office denied the allegation.

“They are insulting to the neighborhood members of the Vision Russell initiative and all the people involved in the years of work being done to revitalize the neighborhoods of West Louisville,” said Jean Porter, deputy director of communications for Mayor Greg Fischer.

“(Mayor Greg Fischer) is absolutely committed to that work, as evidenced by the city’s work to support $1 billion in capital projects there over the past few years,” she continued.

READ MORE: Chicago Obama library highly anticipated, but gentrification and displacement fears begin to surface

The neighborhood has received a $10 million grant for the Louisville Urban League’s Sports and Learning Complex. A new housing development, new businesses, and a new YMCA were recently built.

“Breonna’s home should never have had police there in the first place,” the attorneys wrote in the filing. “When the layers are peeled back, the origin of Breonna’s home being raided by police starts with a political need to clear out a street for a large real estate development project and finishes with a newly formed, rogue police unit violating all levels of policy, protocol, and policing standards.”

The case is currently under investigation by the Kentucky State’s Attorney, and the FBI.

7 men arrested after harassing Black Family with racial slurs, Nazi salutes

Seven white men were arrested in Lincoln City, Oregon after yelling racial slurs and making Nazi salutes at a Black family. The incident occurred at the beach in front of the Inn at Spanish Head Resort Hotel, where the family was staying.

According to a post by the Lincoln City Police Department on Facebook, officers were in the area responding to a report of people shooting illegal fireworks and causing a disturbance.

Officers were met and “immediately surrounded” by a group of 10 people, who taunted and challenged the officers for seizing their fireworks. Several other officers then arrived at the scene and learned that the same group of people had been harassing a Black family.

The officers had to form a barricade between the group and the Black family in order for them to safely leave the beach.

As the group became increasingly confrontational, officers arrested seven of them for a variety of criminal charges including, rioting, interfering with police, disorderly conduct, harassment, possession of illegal fireworks, and offensive littering.

A seventh man was kept overnight because he refused to provide identification. The report states that the men were all “highly intoxicated.”

One Facebook user commented on the posts saying she watched the incident unfold from her balcony at the resort. “Thank you to all the officers that responded. Your efforts and service so very appreciated.”

Other users questioned why the men hadn’t been charged with hate crimes. The Black family involved in the incident has not been identified by police.

Atlanta girl, 8, fatally shot near Rayshard Brooks memorial site

Eight-year-old Secoriea Turner was shot and killed Sunday in Atlanta. The incident occured close to the site where Rayshard Brooks was fatally shot by police on June 12.

The young girl was in a car with her mother who tried to pull into a nearby parking lot when they were confronted by a group of armed people who had blocked the entrance. For reasons not yet known, someone in the group opened fire striking the car several times, killing Turner.

Atlanta Mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms, has said that incident is enough for her to clear out the area. “You shot and killed a baby,” Bottoms said at a press conference, “Enough is enough.”

READ MORE: 11-year-old boy becomes youngest patient to die of coronavirus in Florida

The Mayor had been allowing the site to remain open for peaceful protests. However, she stated that for every 100 peaceful demonstrations, there is a negative incident. Protesters allegedly attempted to firebomb the Georgia Department of Public Safety headquarters building early Sunday.

According to a report from Atlanta’s 11Alive, 60 to 100 people showed up at the building at 1 a.m. wearing dark clothing and masks. Lt. Stephanie Stallings of the Georgia State Patrol told the outlet that the group threw fireworks through windows which started a small fire.

Brooks was shot by former Atlanta police officer, Garrett Rolfe, after being confronted when he fell asleep in a Wendy’s parking lot. Following a breathalyzer test, Brooks grabbed Rolfe’s taser and ran. He was shot as he ran away. Bodycam footage also noted that the officer kicked him in the head after the shooting.

“We understand the frustration of Rayshard Brooks,” Turner’s mother, Charmaine Turner, said at a press conference, “We ain’t got nothing to do with that. (We’re) innocent. We didn’t mean no harm. My baby didn’t mean no harm.”

According to an NBC News report, a 53-year-old man was killed in a shooting, and two other people were wounded in the same area later that night.

Mayor Bottoms continued to express her frustration during the press conference saying, “We are doing each other more harm than any police officer on this force. We’ve had over 75 shootings in the city over the past several weeks. You can’t blame that on APD (Atlanta Police Department).”

Cop Challenges Anti-Cop Protesters To Fight, Backs Down After People ‘Pull Up’

Cop Anti-Cop

A man claiming to be a cop, “peace officer, fitness trainer” posted a video on Tik Tok under the name @darksonofkrypton calling out the George Floyd protesters and challenging them to a fight.

“So I just watched another video of some clown with a camera running his mouth to an officer, I think it was in New York, and calling him a b**** and a punk and ‘take that badge and gun off and let’s fight,’” DarkSonOfKrypton said.

He continued, “A lot of you think we hide behind our badges and our guns…so how about we come up with a system…put your camera down and I’ll put down my badge and gun and let’s step into the ring.”

But when viewers asked for his location, DarkSonofKrypton changed his tone. He posted another video and stated, “I did not come out and challenge anybody. I definitely did not challenge Black people. I did not challenge Black Lives Matter. I did not challenge Antifa.”

Twitter exploded with responses. Some were pro DarkSonofKrypton, who has 161,900 followers on Tik Tok. Live Free @LiveFre72514184 tweeted, “Awesome. Let’s see how many of these tough guys want to step up to this challenge!”

How could this energy metastasize into the “New Blacks” politics in 2020? Jamarlin goes solo to discuss who is doing the trading and what is being traded to weaken the aggregate Black political position.

But others called out the “officer” on social media and said they could “pull up” and meet his challenge. As Brother Q @andraydomise tweeted, “This is 5’7″ talk. 99% of the bass came out the man’s voice when the internet told him to turn his location on.”

Eric @bothsidesuck tweeted, “·Dude added terms and conditions as soon as folks called him on his tough talk.”

This New Crowdfunding Platform Is Designed To Support Women Entrepreneurs Globally

crowdfunding

Gaining startup capital for a new business can be extremely challenging. Women and minorities are often cut out of lucrative venture capitalist funding, leaving them with few options to accumulate the funds they need to launch their new venture. This woman entrepreneur sought to help other women gain independence with a platform to help fund their dream ventures.

Tracy Garley, founder and CEO of GoFundHer, launched a crowdfunding platform for women to convene in a space to receive financial and community support. The Liberian-born entrepreneur worked with crowdfunding owner Roger Mensah to make her idea a reality.

“I developed the crowdfunding website and social club as sister companies embracing the causes of girls and women,” Garley wrote in an email interview with BLACK ENTERPRISE.

“To gain users I created City Girls Big Dreams weekly online “Dream Session” events for girls, women, and their supporters to learn about GoFundHer.com while connecting with mentors to develop their goals then collect money online. The Dream Session events are coordinated by interns I mentor in the spring, summer, and fall semesters, as part of an internship program designed for GoFundHer.com to grow the number of women with experience working at technology companies.”

The platform has expanded to more than 150 countries since its launch in 2019. The company also offers direct deposit service for small businesses in over 39 countries including India, Australia, and countries across Europe, with users being allowed to withdraw their money in 24 currencies. The platform allows users to create unlimited fundraising pages with the ability to collect monthly and one-time donations.

“It was important that I provide these opportunities for women around the world because women are still far from achieving social, economic, and political equality. At the current rate of progress, women will have to wait nearly 100 years to close the overall gender gap with men. So I wanted to get started on this very big problem we have in our world,” she added.

“I’ve learned that it’s good to always be willing to help prevent other women from making the same mistakes I made during the early years of my business journey. I know what it feels like to have a dream, but not have the money to fund that dream. This is not a good feeling at all, especially being a girl or woman—some women sell their bodies just to put food on their table. GoFundHer.com is the premium crowdfunding platform that is empowering girls and women to fund their dreams without any obligations or contracts. Real women empowerment starts with enhancing her confidence and bank account.”

Microsoft Will Help 25 Million People Gain The Digital Skills Needed Post COVID-19

Microsoft

Microsoft Corp. has announced that it is launching an initiative to help 25 million people worldwide acquire the digital skills needed in a COVID-19 economy.

Due to the effects of the coronavirus that have taken place worldwide, 2020 has emerged as one of the most challenging years. Encountering this pandemic for the past 6 months, the world has endured multiple challenges on a global level. One of the key steps needed to foster a safe and successful economic recovery is expanded access to the digital skills needed to fill new jobs. Microsoft plans to provide programs to help those people hardest hit by job losses to improve their digital skills. That would include those with lower incomes, women, and underrepresented minorities.

“To help address this need, Microsoft is launching a global skills initiative aimed at bringing more digital skills to 25 million people worldwide by the end of the year. This initiative will bring together every part of our company, combining existing and new resources from LinkedIn, GitHub, and Microsoft. It will be grounded in three areas of activity:

“(1) The use of data to identify in-demand jobs and the skills needed to fill them;

“(2) Free access to learning paths and content to help people develop the skills these positions require;

“(3) Low-cost certifications and free job-seeking tools to help people who develop these skills pursue new jobs.”

Microsoft is trying to make it accessible for those who may need assistance. In its effort to do so, Microsoft has a place to help people find and navigate all of its offerings. They have made all of these resources accessible from a single location: opportunity.linkedin.com. A job seeker or anyone looking to develop these in-demand skills can start there and will be guided through the learning paths based on the roles in which they are interested.

Today I Experienced The Good Samaritan Parable
------------------------------------------------------------
Warning: Long read
*****************

"I go by BJ!", she exclaims while walking towards us, "for Barbara Jean."

It was about two o'clock in the afternoon today, in the sweltering heat summer sun that causes
the skin to be drenched, the skin clammy to the touch.

My arm is tiring, supporting as it is the palm that is moving every which way to position my phone
so it can hopefully connect to those seemingly ever present cell tower signals that now seem to have
become ephemeral in this sunken place where those radio-waves need to be useful.

"Hi! Do you guys need help?", says a silvery voice in the light brown Mercedes Benz making a right-turn.

"Yes we do, our car broke down," as I point down the road to what is her left,"and we are trying to reach our
insurance company for help but this spot seems like a cell phone deadzone."

My arm is still in the air as if performing the gestures that accompany the casting of a Reparo charm.

In the Benz is an old woman, not the kind you pity with their old bones and feeble limbs, but the kind who could still run
an army kitchen given half a chance. She sits quite upright and looks slim, her head full of winter-white hair free flowing
and likely styled with old fashioned rollers, the kind women used to sleep in.

Her world weary face is not made up and as she speaks her friendly smile lights up her face. Were she any paler, I notice,
her mouth would be garish, but against her sun-kissed skin it looks right.

"Which company are you trying to reach?"

When she pulls up her phone to search for the company's phone line, I see the soil beneath her finger nails. A gardner I'll bet.
Then I notice her sunglasses, Method Seven type high-end garden wear. I'll bet she has the best front yard on her street.

"Alright, neither can I! I'll go to my house and be right back with that number."

"Can I get you something to drink too? I got water or soda?"

"Much appreciated and water will be fine."

With that, she spins around, pushing aside everything that had got her out of her presumably cool comfort and into
the broiling, sultry summer heat.

True to her word she is back in 20 minutes to where our incapacitated vehicle had sputtered, wheezed and given out.

"So I thought customer care might not be reachable and you might need all there contact numbers."

"Do the phones work?"

"No, still searching for the network."

"Let me use mine." A few seconds later, a congenial whisper, "OK, it's dialing."
*********************************************************************************

I don't know where you were when you watched Mr. George Floyd die before your very eyes.

I still have no words to describe the depth of the experience and so I will lean on the
searing words of Isabel Wilkerson:

We saw a man face down on the pavement, pinned beneath a car, and above him another man,
a man in uniform, his skin lighter than the man on the ground, and the lighter man was
bearing down on the darker man, his knee boring into the neck of the darker man, the
lighter man’s hands at his sides, in his pockets — could it be that his hands were so
nonchalantly in his pockets? — such was the ease and casual calm, the confidence of
embedded entitlement with which he was able to lord over the darker man.

We heard the man on the ground pleading with the man above him, saw the terror in his face,
heard his gasps for air, heard the anguished cries of an unseen chorus, begging the lighter man to stop.
But the lighter man, the dominant man, looked straight at the bystanders, into the camera, and thus at
all of us around the world who would later bear witness and, instead of heeding the cries of the chorus,
pressed his knee deeper into the darker man’s neck as was the perceived right granted him in the hierarchy.

We soon learned that the man on the ground, George Floyd, had been accused of trying to pass a counterfeit
$20 bill, and, like uncountable Black men over the centuries, lost his life over what might have been a
mere citation for people in the dominant caste.

Off camera, two other men in uniform, who looked like the lighter man, were holding down the darker man
from the other side of the police car as dusk approached in Minneapolis.

Yet another man in uniform, of Asian descent and thus not in the dominant caste, stood near,
watching, immobilized, it seemed, at a remove from his own humanity and potential common cause,
as the darker man slipped out of consciousness.

The man on the ground went silent, drained of breath.

A clear liquid crept down the pavement.

We saw a man, a black man, mercilessly extinguished before our very eyes.

"That is so sad", my lady declared as a seemingly duck-like row of vehicles passed us by without so much as "Hello!"
from their operators.

"They can clearly see the hood up, if nothing else, why not ask if everything's alright?"

"Why fly on by like that?"

"That lady is something else, to stop and ask if we needed help and then to turn around and actually help us."

I could see she was astounded by the deeds the lady we had come to know as BJ had so far done.

By this time, about 40 minutes after we first met Barbara Jean, we had reached the insurance company phone line, got a
tow truck to come pick up the conked out vehicle and Barbara Jean had left to drop off items at the dump, for that is what
had got her out at the time we met.

Not only that, she also had left behind her phone with us, in case the tow truck driver needed further
directions to reach us.

That was extra, extra courteous and my lady, a black woman born and raised in Southern Virginia was moved.

You see, via this very road we were on, we had visited the aberrations of former slave plantations as she sought to give me
personalized witness to the unfitness of the experience of people with my shade of skin in America.

A summarized yet unglamorized life experience; my education through oration of vexation and contemplation in the demonstration of
degradations, overt and more often covert, by those personifications that were as non-melanated as was Barbara Jean.

To quote Lonnie G. Bunch III:

"Like many Americans, watching multiple incidents of deadly violence against black people unfold before
our eyes has left us feeling demoralized and distraught, aghast, and angry....despite gains made in the
past 50 years, we are still a nation riven by inequality and racial division.

The state of our democracy feels fragile and precarious.

Once again, we struggle to make sense of the senseless.

Once again, we bear witness to our country’s troubled history of racial violence, from Freddie Gray and
Eric Garner to Sandra Bland and Trayvon Martin.

Once again, we try to cope as best as we can, whether suffering in silence, participating in protests,
or engaging in conversations that evoke all of our emotions.

Once again, we try to explain to our children that which cannot be explained.

Once again, we pray for justice and we pray for peace.

Once again.

Although it will be a monumental task, the past is replete with examples of ordinary people working
together to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges."
*********************************************************************************

When we got back home, we called our new found neighbor to let her know we were well and thanked her again for
all her graciousness. All she requested in thanks was to pray for her cousin, who happened to reside in a
nursing home in New York.

And so pray we did and we will.

Today I bore witness to but a portion of it, ordinary people working on the labor of being a neighbor, good neighborliness
and doing their part to treat each other best they can as such.

As Richard Ford put it:

"We try, as my sister said. We try. All of us. We try."

Luke 10:25 New International Version (NIV)

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,”
he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all
your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[a];
and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b]”

28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”

29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was
attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.
31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man,
he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him,
passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was;
and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds,
pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an
inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them
to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return,
I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Footnotes:
a. Luke 10:27 Deut. 6:5
b. Luke 10:27 Lev. 19:18
c. Luke 10:35 A denarius was the usual daily wage of a day laborer (see Matt. 20:2).

Conservative political figure, Steve Hotze, wants National Guard to ‘shoot to kill’ protesters

Last month, Conservative political figure Steve Hotze called Republican Texas Governor Gregg Abbott to make sure the National Guard was available to “restore order.”

“I want you to give a message to the governor,” Hotze told Abbott’s chief of staff, Luis Saenz, in a voicemail. “I want to make sure that he has the National Guard down here and they have the order to shoot to kill if any of these son-of-a-bitch people start rioting like they have in Dallas, start tearing down businesses — shoot to kill the son of a bitches. That’s the only way you restore order. Kill ‘em. Thank you.”

There’s no word on whether or not Saenz responded to the voicemail.

On Saturday, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, called it “absolutely disgusting and reprehensible” on Twitter.

The Texas Tribune broke this story and almost immediately, Hotze took to Facebook to try to clear his name.

“It’s not about race but has everything to do with the future of America—the freest and most progressive country in the world. It’s about those who burn homes and businesses, including those owned by African-Americans and attack law enforcement. Enough is enough,” said Hotze.

Hotze is known for being extremely outspoken on social media and his extreme right-wing posts never waver in tone. They range from violent videos condemning protesters and memes making fun of Joe Biden, to coronavirus conspiracy messaging.

Hotze continued to criticize Governor Abbott, referencing his handling of the coronavirus pandemic. On Friday, he filed a lawsuit against the statewide mask mandate in a Travis County District Court.

“This draconian order is contrary to the Texas spirit and invades the liberties the people of Texas protected in the constitution,” the lawsuit says.

Indigenous activists respond to President Donald Trump’s Mount Rushmore address

President Donald Trump’s Mount Rushmore address is receiving criticism from Indigenous activists and human rights groups.

According to the Climate Justice Alliance, the He Sapa or Black Hills, where Mount Rushmore is located, hold a special space for spiritual and political freedom for many native nations including the Shoshoni, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Kiowa, Crow, and Lakota.

“We will not mince words, America was founded upon the genocide, enslavement, and theft of Indigenous peoples and land. There is no better representation of this violence than the desecration of the Seven Grandfathers with the Mt. Rushmore carvings of colonizer faces. This sacred land was, is, and shall always be Indigenous land,” said a statement from the Climate Justice Alliance.

In part of his speech, President Donald Trump mentioned the statues being taken down across the country. Many believe that the statues, which include Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Christopher Columbus, represent racism at its core.

President Trump referred to the protesters as angry mobs, defacing the most sacred memorials in the U.S. The President then promised to put an end to all of it during his speech.

“I am here as your President to proclaim, before the country and before the world, this monument will never be desecrated,” said Trump.

The He Sapa is also a part of the creation story for the Lakota nation, in addition to being an integral part of the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty, which was broken by the U.S.

The federal government has tried to pay the Lakota for the land, but they refused to give in because the land was never for sale to begin with, according to Lakota representatives.

The CJA says they will continue to fight for solidarity in the Indigenous community despite attempts to erase their history.

Terry Crews tweets that he is not a ‘human wrongs activist’

Once again, Terry Crews is doubling down on his criticism of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Crews announced on Twitter, the night before The Fourth of July, that he is a “human rights activist – not a human wrongs activist.”

READ MORE: Terry Crews responds to backlash over Black Lives Matter tweet

As of reporting, the tweet has garnered more than 38K likes and more than 10K retweets.

Crews has become infamous lately for having some of the least popular tweets perceived by Black Twitter, including his lack of support for fellow America’s Got Talent host, Gabriel Union, and his belief that #BlackLivesMatter could turn into Black Lives Better.

Although there is nothing indicating why Crews published the tweet, he has seen a surge in relevance since he began making these controversial comments. Crews appeared on Roland Martin‘s web show last week to discuss his views.

Crews’ “human wrong activist” comments are just another example of his divisive stance on race relations.

Another tweet by Crews implies that it may be best to forget certain things so as to uncloud one’s judgment. He doesn’t reference anything specific, but it might have something to do with race relations, particularly the treatment of Black Americans.

The third and final tweet has Crews simplistically stating that not all white people are bad, and that he is willing to die on this notion for the sake of unifying all races.

This tweet garnered the most likes and retweets, with about 200K and about 40K respectively.

Black people’s reactions to these series of tweets are the same as before, outrage and mockery.

As theGrio previously reported, Marc Lamont Hill, a contributor at theGrio, believes Crews’ unwarranted answers to questions no one is asking is to better white people instead of his own, Black people.

FDA commissioner dodges Trump claim that 99% of coronavirus cases are ‘totally harmless’

Loyalty to President Donald Trump knows no bounds, even amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Since the beginning of the virus outbreak, Trump has repeatedly peddled misinformation when it comes to the severity of the respiratory illness.

In the most recent show of support regardless of the facts, the commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration did not claim nor deny that 99% of coronavirus cases are “totally harmless,” as the president suggested Saturday during a White House Independence Day event.

“I’m not going to get into who is right and who is wrong,” Dr. Stephen Hahn, a member of the White House coronavirus task force, told CNN‘s Dana Bash on “State of the Union.”

“I totally support the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and the information that they’re putting out with respect to this pandemic,” Hahn said in the Sunday interview.

Hahn also said the coronavirus pandemic is “a rapidly evolving situation” and stressed that the U.S. “absolutely must take this seriously.”

The CDC estimates that 35% of COVID-19 cases are asymptomatic, but even people with mild or no symptoms can still spread the virus.

The World Health Organization has said the global fatality rate is likely less than 1% and that about 20% of all people who are diagnosed with the contagion are sick enough to need oxygen or hospital care.

According to John Hopkins University research, the U.S has recorded more than 2.8 million cases of the coronavirus and more than 129,000 people have lost their lives over it. The global positive case count is 11.3 million and the global death count is nearly 532,000 as of Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Trump is preparing to officially accept his nomination at this year’s Republican National Convention in Jacksonville, Florida.

The convention, with events split between two southern 2020 battleground states, is scheduled for Aug. 24-27 in Jacksonville, Florida, and Charlotte, North Carolina. A mandatory mask requirement has been implemented for attendees to keep them safe.

Coronavirus cases in Florida have spiked over the past couple of weeks, but especially on Saturday. The state set an all-time high of the most coronavirus cases in the U.S. in a single day with 11,458 cases, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

Janelle Monae rants against sexism in music, religion and other institutions

Singer Janelle Monae has long been an advocate of equal rights, and has never been shy on her stances against racism, sexism and discrimination toward the LGBTQ community.

Monae has always included social commentary in her work. As a singer, she promotes feminist ideals on albums like Electric Lady and Dirty Computer. Her TV show Homecoming and upcoming film Antebellum grapple with racism against Black Americans.

On Friday, the Grammy-nominated music artist took to social media to get some more things off her chest in terms of the misogyny in the music industry.

Monae posted several entries on her Twitter page to discuss her distaste for disrespectful rhetoric directed at women that some choose to use in hip-hop music and other genres.

“I really only ever wanna hear women rapping,” Monae wrote. “The amount of misogyny from most of men in rap and music is infuriating . We need to abolish that sh*t too .”

The tweet has received at least 5,000 retweets and 32,000 likes as of Sunday afternoon.

In her Twitter posts, Monae calls for men to “do the work” to destroy misogyny in both music lyrics and in the business, since men are the ones who “normalized” it.

“Y’all can’t wait to call women every b***h , hoe , discuss violent acts against women, etc for clout in rap, rock, and through out music history,” she posted.

Monae would go on to speak about how patriarchy has contributed to the oppression of women from many sources beyond just music.

“Misogyny in entertainment, boardrooms, the WH, households, corporate spaces, army, church, let’s us all know ya’ll do not care about women on a human to human level and you never have. If you did it would have been ABOLISHED centuries ago. You had time,” the entertainer said.

The “Make Me Feel” singer zeroed in on the way she thinks religion has played a part in patriarchy, especially.

“The way many RELIGIONS are used to oppress women and perpetuate misogynistic ideals to REMAIN IN POWER must be discussed WAY MORE and ABOLISHED,” she said.

Monae was not above pointing the finger at herself, stating that “love and accountability go hand in hand.”

“A lot of my musical heroes and peers’ Work are problematic in many ways . And I just might be a problematic hero to someone,” she wrote.
