Kanye West’s Yeezy received millions in PPP federal loans

The hip-hop star, reportedly worth $1.3B, secured stimulus funds to save 106 jobs at his California company.

Kanye West, who is reportedly worth $1.3 billion dollars, received a multimillion-dollar loan as part of the federal government’s coronavirus stimulus package.

According to records released Thursday by the U.S. Treasury’s Small Business Administration, the rapper’s Yeezy LLC was the recipient of financial aid  worth between $2 million and $5 million, The Daily Beast reports.

The funds were dispersed in the latest round of the Paycheck Protection Program, and will save 106 jobs at the California company. Yeezy LLC is one of 40,000 companies to receive a PPP loan of $150,000 and above, and the news follows West’s announcement that he is entering the 2020 presidential race.

Ye tweeted on Saturday that he will run for president, saying, “We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States! #2020Vision.”

He has not yet announced what party affiliation he will be associated with or further details on his platform, theGrio previously noted. TMZ also reported that West still needs to file the necessary paperwork to run this year with the FEC which is a requirement for anyone getting into the 2020 race.

Last year, West set his sights on the 2024 presidential election.

“When I run for president in 2024, we would’ve created so many jobs that I’m not going to run, I’m going to walk,” he said.

West’s political ambitions in 2020 will put him in direct contention with Trump, whom West has vigorously defended over the years. West has made no secret that he supports the former reality TV star and his administration.

“I’m a Black guy with a red [MAGA] hat, can you imagine? … It reminded me of how I felt as a Black guy before I was famous, when I would walk in a restaurant and people would look at you like you were going to steal something. ‘This is your place, Ye, don’t talk about apparel. This is your place, Ye, you’re black, so you’re a Democrat,’” West told WSJ in March.

Meanwhile, both Ye and his wife Kim Kardashian have officially reached billionaire status.

West’s sneaker empire alone reportedly made $1.5 billion last year, according to Forbes. The Chicago native has also inked a deal with Gap that will him design hoodies and T-shirts the global brand.

Last week, the hip-hop superstar celebrated his wife reaching ultimate baller status.

“I am so proud of my beautiful wife Kim Kardashian West for officially becoming a billionaire,”  West tweeted, alongside a photo of vegetables depicting live art.

Kardashian, meanwhile, caught major heat on social media when she shared her husband’s tweet announcing his running his 2020 White House goal.

Michigan billboard calls out police for racial profiling

Livonia, a city rich with racist history, was once one of metro Detroit’s notorious ‘sundown towns.’

The Livonia Police Department has responded to a billboard in Redford, Michigan, accusing them of racially profiling Black drivers.

The electronic billboard reads, “Driving While Black? Racial profiling just ahead. Welcome to Livonia.”

The shade was made possible by donations and supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement, WXYZ.com reports. The billboard went live Monday morning on Telegraph Road, just a half mile south of I-96 in Redford.

“We have reached out to the city for records on how many people are pulled over for African American drivers, and they’ve told us their records don’t keep track” said organizer Sara Overwater.

“There are a disproportionate amount of African American drivers who’ve been stopped and many complaints, when you consider the predominantly white community,” she added.

Livonia, a city rich with racist history, was one of metro Detroit’s “sundown towns,” which were neighborhoods of the 19th century and early 20th century that Black people were required by law to flee by sundown to avoid racial violence.

Organizers said the billboard will be up for two weeks.

In the meantime, Livonia Police have rejected accusations that the department in racist,

A response on their Facebook page reads, in part:

Racial profiling is a serious allegation and is not tolerated. Livonia is a welcoming community to all regardless of one’s race. This billboard says the exact opposite message of our values in the Livonia Police Department and of those in our community.

Police Chief Curtis Caid also noted that officers “do not target their enforcement actions to individuals based on gender, race, religion, ethnicity, etc,” the statement said.

Livonia Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan chimed in on the controversial billboard, calling it “counterproductive” to the city’s dedication to “improving diversity, equity, and inclusion in our community,” she said in a statement.

“This billboard will not help advance the progress of diversity in our community, something to which I am committed,” she added.

Patrick Mahomes scores $450M contract extension

The Super Bowl-winning quarterback for the Kansas City Chief is awarded the richest contract in league history

Kansas City waited 50 years for a Super Bowl championship. Now they’ve broken open the Brinks truck to make sure the man that got them there is rewarded with more than just the Lombardi trophy.

Read More: NFL ‘fans’ threaten boycott over Black national anthem

The Chiefs announced today that Patrick Mahomes, 24, the Texas quarterback sensation that has been both a league and a Super Bowl MVP, signed on to a 10-year contract extension worth at least $450M, reported ESPN.

The deal puts Mahomes under contract for the next 12 seasons as the team had already picked up his fifth-year option for 2021. With the deal, according to ESPN, Mahomes becomes the highest-paid player in pro sports. However, Los Angeles Angels centerfielder Mike Trout has the most lucrative contract that is fully guaranteed.

ESPN NFL corresponding Adam Schefter was told that Mahomes’ contract comes with a $140M injury guarantee, but the whole contract is not guaranteed but has guarantee “mechanisms. ” Although the term confused some fans, it sounds like the deal is constructed in such a way that with incentives that it could potentially end up the most high-paying deal in sports ever.

Mahomes, the former Texas Tech standout, was the youngest Super Bowl MVP in league history a year after becoming the league MVP, a two-fer that he earned before age 25, making him the first player to do do.

Despite battling a knee and ankle injury that cost him two games, Mahomes was stellar in his 31-20 Super Bowl victory vs. the San Franciso 49’ers, throwing three touchdowns and overcoming a 10-point lead in the game. He finished 26 of 42 for 286 yards with a 78.6 passer rating, despite two interceptions.

Sports Twitter, including some of Mahomes’ teammates and fellow athletes, celebrated his contract on social media.

Dak Prescott, the Cowboys quarterback and his agent are likely looking at this deal to improve his stalled negotiations somewhat. While he can’t boast Mahomes’ stats, he is the franchise quarterback who has yet to come to terms with the team on a new contract.

But the speculation is that Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, who was the most exciting player to watch in the league last season, though he fell short in the playoffs, will likely be the biggest beneficiary of Mahomes’ mega-deal when he re-signs with the team.

Meghan Markle, Prince Harry talk racism with Commonwealth youth leaders

The high profile duo want to encourage a new generation of leaders

Ever since their move to the states, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have made it clear that they plan to be more civically engaged. This week, the high profile couple is speaking out once again about racial injustice.

According to People, on July 1st the Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined a video conference about the fight for equality with young leaders from across the world linked to the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust.

The QCT, an organization in which Harry serves as president Meghan is vice-president — has been holding these weekly discussions about justice and equality, in part to confront and dismantle the unconscious biases that allow racism to continue to fester in this country.

“We can’t deny or ignore the fact that all of us have been educated to see the world differently,” Harry said during this most recent conversation. “However, once you start to realize that there is that bias there, then you need to acknowledge it, you need to do the work to become more aware … so that you can help stand up for something that is so wrong and should not be acceptable in our society today.”

The duo then shared their hopes to do their part in encouraging a new generation of leaders. Meghan reminded everyone, “It’s not just in the big moments, it’s in the quiet moments where racism and unconscious bias lies and thrives. It makes it confusing for a lot of people to understand the role that they play in that, both passively and actively.”

In a surprising turn, Harry also acknowledged how the British colonial past played a role in the history of injustice, explaining, “When you look across the Commonwealth, there is no way that we can move forward unless we acknowledge the past … We all acknowledge there’s so much more still to do. It’s not going to be easy and in some cases, it’s not going to be comfortable … And guess what, everybody benefits.”

Why the buying Black trend should be a permanent lifestyle

OPINION: When the furor dies, and when the hashtags get quiet who will be there still doing the work to support Black businesses?

There is a fire spreading across the internet, across social media, and across the world. This fire is consuming, but not in the way you think. This fire is lighting up consumers to shop with Black-owned businesses.

Right now, buying Black is trending in a way that it never has before even with people who may never have previously considered it. The community of us who have been working to support Black businesses for years want to turn that trend into a lifestyle.

Read More: 50 + Black businesses to support during the coronavirus pandemic

In 2016, Jason Coles sat down with his phone and his laptop and started designing an app. He wanted to build a marketplace for Black brands. He didn’t have much of a budget or much spare time outside of work, but he built what he could, where he could, until the Shop Katika app and website launched as a marketplace for Black goods.

The same year, Anthony Edwards and Janique Edwards, a young husband and wife duo in New York, thought to themselves: “Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to easily find Black-owned restaurants in your area?”

Anthony, who is a software developer, built EatOkra, a Black-owned restaurant locator app, himself from the ground up. Up to 2019, he didn’t even ask for any payment from featured businesses.

Buy Melanin started out as just a thought in 2012 after Trayvon Martin was killed. Founder Samantha Siler became more engaged in dialogue with her peers about where we spent our money and the importance of strategically allocating our money to cripple systemic racism.

Read More: Black-owned virtual reality business seeks to entertain, educate customers

Buy Melanin has since blossomed with pop-up events accommodating close to 70 vendors, and an entire community of supporters of the buy Black movement engaging with the business every day.

Like these other young founders, I was inspired by passion. More than a year ago, I only had a Google Spreadsheet and a dream. I’d had a transformative idea to build a platform that would allow people to buy Black online in one centralized place, and I wanted to see if it was even feasible.

I started by texting out to a huge group of friends and family and asking, “if there were a Black-owned marketplace like Amazon, would you use it?” Folks almost unanimously messaged me back with a resounding “yes!” I followed up the message to ask what Black brands they were currently shopping with.

A lot of people never answered that message.

Many of the ones who did could only name one or two. On any given day, most of the people I messaged could break down racial and political issues to you in an intellectually-flawless manner. But that day, many couldn’t name a single Black brand they supported, besides a few natural haircare ones.

That told me that the work I was about to do was necessary.

I started building my spreadsheet by drawing from the seemingly endless sets of lists that zip across the internet every so often compiling Black brands that people should support. Some of the businesses on these lists had already come and gone, and the links were dead.

Others ended up not being Black-owned at all. I learned about the term Blackfishing through the hours I spent crawling the internet looking for Black brands, and finding that many use Black models to obscure foreign ownership.

I also found community. As I started learning the ins and outs of being a solo-preneur, from designing the site to learning about SEO, I also started to find other people working just as hard for Black-owned businesses.

(Photo: Adobe Stock)

Jason. Samantha. Anthony. Marvin Francois of OneKin. Dr. Kristian Edwards of BLK + GRN. There were so many people making contributions, large and small, to the growing movement of supporting Black businesses.

In the weeks following George Floyd’s murder, the support of Black-owned businesses has become much more widespread and reached almost a fever pitch. People who may have never even said “Black-owned” a day in their lives are suddenly looking for ways to spend dollars with Black businesses. It’s awesome to watch.

The current climate is validation that people need our work and that our businesses have support. But when the furor dies, and when the hashtags get quiet, who will be there still doing the work?

There is a community of us who have made this our livelihoods. Who have made it our business to further Black buying. Who have built the databases, relationships, apps, networks, knowledge, stamina, and teams with our blood and tears, even when it wasn’t trending.

We support not just the brands with marketing dollars and employees, but the solo-preneur outfits with multiple pulls on their time and resources. We have built each other up, we have given advice and time, and when the social media trends turn to other things, we’ll still be here doing the work of supporting all things Black-owned.

I want everyone to buy Black, support Black, uplift Black. Please support as many businesses and initiatives as you can find. Not just today or this month or this summer, but forever. It won’t undo all the harm we’ve experienced as a community, but it will help.

And, after social media efforts die out, buy BLACK. When the pop-up lists and websites are no longer being updated, buy Black. When the celebs and influencers have moved on to the next project, buy Black. Buy Black. Buy Black. Buy Black.

Beyoncé is faking being African American, congressional candidate says

A Florida Congressional candidate tweeted that Beyoncé is not African American.

“She is faking this for exposure.” KW Miller wrote, “Her real name is Ann Marie Lastrassi. She is Italian. This is all part of the Soros Deep State agenda for the Black Lives Matter movement.”

Miller finished his bizarre claim by stating, “BEYONCÉ YOU ARE ON NOTICE!”

The post instantly went viral and fans of the singer suggested that the man seek help.

Miller is running to represent the 18th Congressional District in Florida. The area is currently represented by Republican Brian Mast.

Miller did not end his rant there. He also alleged that the 24-time Grammy winner’s song, “Formation,” contains Satanic messaging.

“The song clearly admitted that she was demonic and that she worshipped in the Satanist churches located in Alabama & Louisiana,” he continued. “She keeps Satanist symbols in her bag.” Miller was referring to the line, “I got hot sauce in my bag, swag…”

Patti LaBelle is another Illuminati globalist puppet,” he wrote using a slur for Jews. He quoted the iconic singer’s 1991 hit song, “Somebody Loves You, Baby (You Know Who It Is)” as proof of her membership. “I’m under your spell. I don’t want to break free. You can make a slave out of me. I worship you and nobody else. I pledge my love to you forever.” Miller wrote, “Who was she professing this to? Moloch? Lucifer? Who?”

Holly Robinson Peete replied, “KEEP MS. PATTI’S NAME OUTCHA DAMN MOUTH.”

The man went on to rant about Communists, Marxists, and more.

And, of course, Miller tweeted that he “will run for President in 2024. I will achieve things no one knew possible from a President. They can’t stop me.”

Lawyers allege Breonna Taylor’s house was targeted because of gentrification plan

Lawyers for the family of Breonna Taylor alleged that the police squad responsible for her death, known as Place-Based Investigations, had “deliberately misled” narcotics detectives to target her home.

New court filings allege that the investigation was a part of a major gentrification project in western Louisville and that Jamarcus Glover was a “primary roadblock.” Glover was a ex-boyfriend of Taylor, with whom she maintained a “passive” friendship.

READ MORE: Breonna Taylor activists drag Kentucky AG for alleged engagement party

The complaint, which is detailed in the Louisville Courier-Journal, says that the Place-Based Investigations unit led narcotics detectives to believe that they were after a violent drug and crime ring.

“The execution of this search warrant robbed Breonna of her life and Tamika Palmer of her daughter,” Florida-based attorney Benjamin Crump, who is representing the family, told The Courier-Journal on Sunday.

“Its execution exhibited outrageous recklessness and willful, wanton, unprecedented, and unlawful conduct.”

However, a spokesperson from the Mayor’s office denied the allegation.

“They are insulting to the neighborhood members of the Vision Russell initiative and all the people involved in the years of work being done to revitalize the neighborhoods of West Louisville,” said Jean Porter, deputy director of communications for Mayor Greg Fischer.

“(Mayor Greg Fischer) is absolutely committed to that work, as evidenced by the city’s work to support $1 billion in capital projects there over the past few years,” she continued.

READ MORE: Chicago Obama library highly anticipated, but gentrification and displacement fears begin to surface

The neighborhood has received a $10 million grant for the Louisville Urban League’s Sports and Learning Complex. A new housing development, new businesses, and a new YMCA were recently built.

“Breonna’s home should never have had police there in the first place,” the attorneys wrote in the filing. “When the layers are peeled back, the origin of Breonna’s home being raided by police starts with a political need to clear out a street for a large real estate development project and finishes with a newly formed, rogue police unit violating all levels of policy, protocol, and policing standards.”

The case is currently under investigation by the Kentucky State’s Attorney, and the FBI.

7 men arrested after harassing Black Family with racial slurs, Nazi salutes

Seven white men were arrested in Lincoln City, Oregon after yelling racial slurs and making Nazi salutes at a Black family. The incident occurred at the beach in front of the Inn at Spanish Head Resort Hotel, where the family was staying.

According to a post by the Lincoln City Police Department on Facebook, officers were in the area responding to a report of people shooting illegal fireworks and causing a disturbance.

Officers were met and “immediately surrounded” by a group of 10 people, who taunted and challenged the officers for seizing their fireworks. Several other officers then arrived at the scene and learned that the same group of people had been harassing a Black family.

The officers had to form a barricade between the group and the Black family in order for them to safely leave the beach.

As the group became increasingly confrontational, officers arrested seven of them for a variety of criminal charges including, rioting, interfering with police, disorderly conduct, harassment, possession of illegal fireworks, and offensive littering.

A seventh man was kept overnight because he refused to provide identification. The report states that the men were all “highly intoxicated.”

One Facebook user commented on the posts saying she watched the incident unfold from her balcony at the resort. “Thank you to all the officers that responded. Your efforts and service so very appreciated.”

Other users questioned why the men hadn’t been charged with hate crimes. The Black family involved in the incident has not been identified by police.

Atlanta girl, 8, fatally shot near Rayshard Brooks memorial site

Eight-year-old Secoriea Turner was shot and killed Sunday in Atlanta. The incident occured close to the site where Rayshard Brooks was fatally shot by police on June 12.

The young girl was in a car with her mother who tried to pull into a nearby parking lot when they were confronted by a group of armed people who had blocked the entrance. For reasons not yet known, someone in the group opened fire striking the car several times, killing Turner.

Atlanta Mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms, has said that incident is enough for her to clear out the area. “You shot and killed a baby,” Bottoms said at a press conference, “Enough is enough.”

READ MORE: 11-year-old boy becomes youngest patient to die of coronavirus in Florida

The Mayor had been allowing the site to remain open for peaceful protests. However, she stated that for every 100 peaceful demonstrations, there is a negative incident. Protesters allegedly attempted to firebomb the Georgia Department of Public Safety headquarters building early Sunday.

According to a report from Atlanta’s 11Alive, 60 to 100 people showed up at the building at 1 a.m. wearing dark clothing and masks. Lt. Stephanie Stallings of the Georgia State Patrol told the outlet that the group threw fireworks through windows which started a small fire.

Brooks was shot by former Atlanta police officer, Garrett Rolfe, after being confronted when he fell asleep in a Wendy’s parking lot. Following a breathalyzer test, Brooks grabbed Rolfe’s taser and ran. He was shot as he ran away. Bodycam footage also noted that the officer kicked him in the head after the shooting.

“We understand the frustration of Rayshard Brooks,” Turner’s mother, Charmaine Turner, said at a press conference, “We ain’t got nothing to do with that. (We’re) innocent. We didn’t mean no harm. My baby didn’t mean no harm.”

According to an NBC News report, a 53-year-old man was killed in a shooting, and two other people were wounded in the same area later that night.

Mayor Bottoms continued to express her frustration during the press conference saying, “We are doing each other more harm than any police officer on this force. We’ve had over 75 shootings in the city over the past several weeks. You can’t blame that on APD (Atlanta Police Department).”

Cop Challenges Anti-Cop Protesters To Fight, Backs Down After People ‘Pull Up’

Cop Anti-Cop

A man claiming to be a cop, “peace officer, fitness trainer” posted a video on Tik Tok under the name @darksonofkrypton calling out the George Floyd protesters and challenging them to a fight.

“So I just watched another video of some clown with a camera running his mouth to an officer, I think it was in New York, and calling him a b**** and a punk and ‘take that badge and gun off and let’s fight,’” DarkSonOfKrypton said.

He continued, “A lot of you think we hide behind our badges and our guns…so how about we come up with a system…put your camera down and I’ll put down my badge and gun and let’s step into the ring.”

But when viewers asked for his location, DarkSonofKrypton changed his tone. He posted another video and stated, “I did not come out and challenge anybody. I definitely did not challenge Black people. I did not challenge Black Lives Matter. I did not challenge Antifa.”

Twitter exploded with responses. Some were pro DarkSonofKrypton, who has 161,900 followers on Tik Tok. Live Free @LiveFre72514184 tweeted, “Awesome. Let’s see how many of these tough guys want to step up to this challenge!”

This New Crowdfunding Platform Is Designed To Support Women Entrepreneurs Globally

crowdfunding

Gaining startup capital for a new business can be extremely challenging. Women and minorities are often cut out of lucrative venture capitalist funding, leaving them with few options to accumulate the funds they need to launch their new venture. This woman entrepreneur sought to help other women gain independence with a platform to help fund their dream ventures.

Tracy Garley, founder and CEO of GoFundHer, launched a crowdfunding platform for women to convene in a space to receive financial and community support. The Liberian-born entrepreneur worked with crowdfunding owner Roger Mensah to make her idea a reality.

“I developed the crowdfunding website and social club as sister companies embracing the causes of girls and women,” Garley wrote in an email interview with BLACK ENTERPRISE.

“To gain users I created City Girls Big Dreams weekly online “Dream Session” events for girls, women, and their supporters to learn about GoFundHer.com while connecting with mentors to develop their goals then collect money online. The Dream Session events are coordinated by interns I mentor in the spring, summer, and fall semesters, as part of an internship program designed for GoFundHer.com to grow the number of women with experience working at technology companies.”

The platform has expanded to more than 150 countries since its launch in 2019. The company also offers direct deposit service for small businesses in over 39 countries including India, Australia, and countries across Europe, with users being allowed to withdraw their money in 24 currencies. The platform allows users to create unlimited fundraising pages with the ability to collect monthly and one-time donations.

“It was important that I provide these opportunities for women around the world because women are still far from achieving social, economic, and political equality. At the current rate of progress, women will have to wait nearly 100 years to close the overall gender gap with men. So I wanted to get started on this very big problem we have in our world,” she added.

“I’ve learned that it’s good to always be willing to help prevent other women from making the same mistakes I made during the early years of my business journey. I know what it feels like to have a dream, but not have the money to fund that dream. This is not a good feeling at all, especially being a girl or woman—some women sell their bodies just to put food on their table. GoFundHer.com is the premium crowdfunding platform that is empowering girls and women to fund their dreams without any obligations or contracts. Real women empowerment starts with enhancing her confidence and bank account.”

Microsoft Will Help 25 Million People Gain The Digital Skills Needed Post COVID-19

Microsoft

Microsoft Corp. has announced that it is launching an initiative to help 25 million people worldwide acquire the digital skills needed in a COVID-19 economy.

Due to the effects of the coronavirus that have taken place worldwide, 2020 has emerged as one of the most challenging years. Encountering this pandemic for the past 6 months, the world has endured multiple challenges on a global level. One of the key steps needed to foster a safe and successful economic recovery is expanded access to the digital skills needed to fill new jobs. Microsoft plans to provide programs to help those people hardest hit by job losses to improve their digital skills. That would include those with lower incomes, women, and underrepresented minorities.

“To help address this need, Microsoft is launching a global skills initiative aimed at bringing more digital skills to 25 million people worldwide by the end of the year. This initiative will bring together every part of our company, combining existing and new resources from LinkedIn, GitHub, and Microsoft. It will be grounded in three areas of activity:

“(1) The use of data to identify in-demand jobs and the skills needed to fill them;

“(2) Free access to learning paths and content to help people develop the skills these positions require;

“(3) Low-cost certifications and free job-seeking tools to help people who develop these skills pursue new jobs.”

Microsoft is trying to make it accessible for those who may need assistance. In its effort to do so, Microsoft has a place to help people find and navigate all of its offerings. They have made all of these resources accessible from a single location: opportunity.linkedin.com. A job seeker or anyone looking to develop these in-demand skills can start there and will be guided through the learning paths based on the roles in which they are interested.
