The NBA Playoffs Will Resume as Player Reps and League to Discuss Next Steps

NBA Playoffs

As previously reported, the NBA had canceled Wednesday’s playoff games after the Milwaukee Bucks decided not to play in protest of the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. After that display, the league then decided to cancel the other two playoff games scheduled for last night.

The NBA players had earlier today decided that they do want to continue playing the season after contemplating if they should cut the season short with all the racial strife currently taking place.

NBA Executive Vice President Mike Bass issued the following written statement regarding NBA playoff games:

“NBA playoff games for today will not be played as scheduled. We are hopeful to resume games either Friday or Saturday. There is a video-conference call meeting scheduled later this afternoon between a group of NBA players and team governors representing the 13 teams in Orlando, along with representatives from the National Basketball Players Association and the league office and NBA Labor Relations Committee Chairman Michael Jordan, to discuss next steps.”

The WNBA had come to a similar decision when they also opted out of the day’s playoff games for the same reason.

A statement was released by that league today as well.

“As the WNBA players continue discussions and reflection on recent events, the WNBA announced that the three games scheduled for this evening (Chicago Sky vs. Indiana Fever; Dallas Wings vs. New York Liberty; Las Vegas Aces vs. Seattle Storm) have been postponed.

“Information regarding rescheduling of yesterday and today’s games will be provided when available.”

National Basketball Players Association Executive Director Michele Roberts also released a statement regarding Wednesday’s action.

“Throughout the season restart, our players have been unwavering in their demands for systemic justice. This week we witnessed another horrific, shocking and all too familiar act of brutality in the shooting of 29 year-old Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Players have, once again, made it clear—they will not be silent on this issue. We stand with the decision of the players of the Milwaukee Bucks to protest this injustice and support the collective decision to postpone all of today’s games.”

NHL Postpones Thursday Night’s Stanley Cup Playoff Games

NHL

The National Hockey League (NHL) has cancelled Thursday night’s Stanley Cup Playoff games after the Hockey Diversity Alliance formally requested the league suspend all playoff games.

The New York Islanders vs. Philadelphia Flyers game in the Toronto bubble, as well as the Vegas Golden Knights vs. Vancouver Canucks matchup in the Edmonton bubble, will not be played, according to ESPN.

The league played all games as scheduled Wednesday, while all or several games were canceled in the NBA, MLB, WNBA and MLS, due to the death of Jacob Blake, who was shot in the back seven times by a Kenosha, Wisconsin, police officer.

That led to some backlash for the league as some of its own players spoke out. San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane, one of the league’s few Black players and a member of the league’s diversity alliance, said he was hurt by the league’s lack of attention on the issue.

“I’ll be honest, I haven’t really heard much in regards to Jacob Blake’s attempted murder. It’s unfortunate, we’re obviously talking about another Black man unarmed being shot in the back in front of his children,” Kane said on Sportsnet.

“But again, we had these conversations earlier with the George Floyd killing of continuing the conversation, furthering the conversation, everybody wanting to be better and making sure that we’re more vocal and we do better moving forward. Here’s another example, unfortunately, but it’s also another example of the lack of with regards to our league and our players and our media that cover our game.”

Minnesota Wild defenseman Matt Dumba, who is also a member of the alliance, added to Kane’s comments.

“I hope guys find it in them to stand up. You can’t keep coming to the minority players every time there’s a situation like this, Dumba said. “The white players in our league need to have answers for what they’re seeing in society right now, and where they stand.”

ESPN’s Emily Caplan said the league didn’t expect to cancel games Thursday unless players across the league took a strong stance, which they did through a conversation with the Hockey Diversity Alliance.

The alliance’s executive committee includes Dumba, Kane, Detroit Red Wings defenseman Trevor Daley, Buffalo Sabres forward Wayne Simmonds, Philadelphia Flyers forward Chris Stewart, and retired forward Joel Ward.

The group’s goal is “to eradicate racism and intolerance in hockey.”

When the league decided to play games as scheduled Wednesday, Dumba called it disappointing.

“The NHL is always late to the party, especially on these topics, so it’s sorta sad and disheartening for me and other members of the Hockey Diversity Alliance, and I’m sure other guys across the league.”

New Jersey officers vandalize car of man who filed complaint against them

Two former officers of Asbury Park Police in New Jersey pleaded guilty to vandalizing the vehicles of a man who filed a complaint against them.

Two former police officers in New Jersey pleaded guilty to vandalizing cars belonging to a man who filed a complaint against them.

Stephen Martinsen and Thomas Dowling were still on-duty police officers in 2019 when they slashed tires on two cars and broke the windows in one. The men pleaded guilty to fourth-degree criminal mischief, according to the press release from Christopher J. Gramiccioni, Monmouth Country Prosecutor.

“Spiteful retaliation from law enforcement officers towards a citizen for any reason is an unacceptable option. This is in no way condoned at any level, for any reason,” the statement reads.

“All members of the law enforcement community must maintain the public’s trust by conducting themselves at the highest level of integrity and decency,” Gramiccioni said.

Their plea agreement means the men will not be able to hold public employment in the State of New Jersey in the future. The state also agreed to recommend a probationary sentence conditioned upon restitution being made to the victim for the $500 in damages.

The citizen filed an internal affairs complaint against Martinsen and Dowling. Both admitted the cars were damaged in direct retaliation of the complaint. Details of what the citizen reported are not included, however, Asbury Park Police Chief David Kelso believes this shows the strength of their internal investigations.

“The cooperative efforts of the Asbury Park Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit and the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office’s Professional Responsibility Unit is a clear example of how effective our current internal affairs policies are,” he says in the release.

“These officers were held accountable for their actions and misconduct and we will continue to hold our officer’s responsible to build upon the trust of the community that we serve.”

Martinsen, a member of the department since 2014 has been suspended without pay since the incident. Dowling, a full-time member since 2015 was terminated when the initial charges were filed.

The case is being prosecuted by Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Melanie Falco and sentencing is scheduled for October 16.

Kamala Harris blasts Trump’s pandemic response: ‘He has failed miserably’

Sen. Kamala Harris criticized President Donald Trump ahead of his RNC speech

At a press conference, Sen. Kamala Harris blasted President Donald Trump for failing to protect the country due to his handling of the pandemic because he has “a reckless disregard for the well-being of the American people.”

The Democratic vice-presidential nominee spoke from Washington, D.C. ahead of Trump’s acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention on Thursday evening. She criticized how he reacted when the coronavirus first began to take a foothold in the nation earlier this year.

“Donald Trump froze. He was scared. And he was petty and vindictive,” Harris said.

She also framed the president as being “fixated on the stock market” and that he “caved” to the government in China.

“Donald Trump stood idly by and, folks, it was a deadly decision,” Harris said.

“All we needed was a competent president. One who was willing to listen, willing to lead, take responsibility, have a plan, do their job.”

She added, “Donald Trump has failed at the most basic and important job of a president of the United States,” Harris said. “It’s his obligation to protect us. Yet, he has failed miserably.”

Harris said that the president did not appreciate the gravity of COVID-19. To date, there have been almost 6 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 180,380 Americans have died.

“And here’s what you have to understand about the nature of a pandemic: It’s relentless. You can’t stop it with a tweet. You can’t create a distraction and hope it’ll go away. It doesn’t go away,” she said.

She continued her critique, labeling Trump as “incompetent” and that he had damaged the economy because of his inaction.

“For the devastation it would do to our economy, for the damage it would do to communities of color who have been subjected to structural racism for generations. For the chaos that would upend our daily lives, make it impossible for many of our children to go to school, make it impossible to live normally and with a sense of certainty,” she said.

She continued, “Trump’s incompetence is nothing new … but in January of this year it became deadly.”

Joe Biden and his campaign made the decision to preemptively blunt the impact of Trump’s speech which included flooding the airwaves with ads. One highlights the biography of the Democratic presidential nominee and America’s resiliency.

“America is an idea, an idea stronger than any army more powerful than any dictator or tyrant,” Biden says in the ad. “And it’s an idea as alive and powerful today as it was when it was first proposed.”

Harris further countered Trump’s keynote address with the claim that the RNC was only happening for the benefit of the president rather than those who are struggling.

“The Republican convention is designed for one purpose: To soothe Donald Trump’s ego, to make him feel good,” Harris said. “But here’s the thing: He’s the President of the United States, and it’s not supposed to be about him. It’s supposed to be about the health and the safety and the well-being of the American people.”

“And on that measure,” she added, “Donald Trump has failed.”

Wells Fargo To Pay Almost $8 Million In Hiring Bias Settlement

Wells Fargo

Wells Fargo will pay $7.8 million to settle Labor Department allegations of hiring discrimination against women and Black workers.

The bank allegedly discriminated against more than 34,100 Black applicants for “banking, customer sales and service, and administrative support positions.” The company also discriminated against 308 female applicants for “administrative support positions,” the Labor Department said in a statement.

The San Francisco-based bank did not admit wrongdoing according to the agency but will enter into an “enhanced” compliance agreement, whereby the agency agrees to proactive future monitoring and compliance measures for some of its business functions.

Wells Fargo will also extend 580 job offers to applicants affected by the alleged bias, the Labor Department’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Program said.

The DOL’s Contract Compliance office, which randomly audits federal contractors for compliance with anti-discrimination and affirmative action obligations, has fined Wells Fargo before.

Wells Fargo has settled discrimination claims with the agency at least twice in the past, including just last year. The bank paid $600,000 to settle claims of race and sex-based hiring bias claims. In 2015, Wells Fargo settled bias allegations for not providing accommodation to an applicant with a disability.

A year later, the bank was fined $100 million for the “widespread illegal practice of secretly opening unauthorized accounts.” The order also required the bank to pay an estimated $2.5 million in refunds to customers.

“The agreement with the OFCCP relates to its routine review of hiring data from six to 10 years ago in a small number of U.S. geographies,” Peter Gilchrist, a Wells Fargo spokesperson, told Bloomberg in an email. “The review found lower selection rates for African Americans for some teller, customer service and personal and phone banker positions, while Hispanics were generally the group with the highest selection rate, reflecting the need for Spanish-language skills for certain customer-facing roles.”

Gilchrist added Wells Fargo has significantly changed its hiring practices since that time, “including centralizing recruiting, establishing a recruiting team focused on diverse talent, increasing partnerships with diverse organizations, and improving record keeping.”

Lakers, Clippers vote to boycott NBA season during initial poll: report

Six teams boycotted their playoff games Wednesday, with the Milwaukee Bucks leading the charge.

The Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers have reportedly voted to boycott the remainder of the NBA season in protest of police brutality and  social justice.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, most of the teams taking part in the vote on Wednesday were in favor of continuing the playoffs. The boycott is in response to the police shooting of 29-year-old Jacob Blake

Blake was shot in front of his children on Sunday while attempting to get into his car after reportedly breaking up a fight between two women. The shooting took place in Kenosha, Wisconsin, a city just 45 minutes from where the Bucks play in Milwaukee.

theGrio previously reported that Lakers star LeBron James condemned the shooting on Monday and admitted that the incident has left him quite shaken.

“If you’re sitting here telling me that there was no way to subdue that gentleman or detain him before the firing of guns, then you’re sitting here lying not only to me, but you’re lying to every African American, every Black person in the community,” James told the media earlier this week from the NBA ‘bubble’ where players have been sequestered since July 30.

Six teams boycotted their playoff games Wednesday, with the Milwaukee Bucks leading the charge.

“We are calling for justice for Jacob Blake and demand the officers be held accountable,” Bucks guard George Hill told reporters, per SI.com. “For this to occur, it is imperative for the Wisconsin State Legislature to reconvene after months of inaction and take up meaningful measures to address issues of police accountability, brutality, and criminal justice reform.”

Wednesday’s vote reportedly saw players from the Bucks, the Oklahoma City Thunder, Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets and Portland Trail Blazers, in favor of the boycott. James left the meeting following the vote, but not before urging team owners to be more involved with social justice and racial issues, per Charania.

“Miami’s Udonis Haslem spoke and essentially told everyone in room that — without Lakers and Clippers, how will season continue?” Charania reported. “LeBron James walked out. Rest of Lakers and Clippers exited behind him.”

News of the meeting — which was attended by coaches and referees –comes amid reports that Milwaukee Bucks were the first to boycott their potential closeout game 5 playoff game against the Orlando Magic, theGrio reported.

Support from the rest of the sports world was swift, as players from the NBA, NFL, and other sports figures and teams responded in solidarity with the NBA boycott.

TNT co-host Kenny Smith walked off the set of Inside the NBA in support of his former colleagues. Tennis star Naomi Osaka backed out of her upcoming semifinal match in the Southern Open, and the Los Angeles Dodgers announced they would sit out tonight’s game against the San Francisco Giants.

Meanwhile, ESPN Senior NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski noted on Twitter that “the Clippers and Lakers voting on perhaps not continuing with the season was considered more of a polling, than a final vote, sources tell ESPN. The resumption of the playoffs remains still up in the air,” he wrote.

Adding in a follow up tweet, “Discussions on continuing season will extend into tomorrow, sources tell ESPN, but appears unlikely the three playoff games on Thursday will be played.”

Naomi Osaka withdraws from semifinals match to protest racial injustice

‘Watching the continued genocide of Black people at the hand of police is honestly making me sick to my stomach.’

Naomi Osaka has announced she’s not going to play in the semifinals of the Southern & Western Open tennis tournament Thursday in protest of the police shooting of Jacob Blake.

Blake, an unarmed Black man, was shot multiple times in the back by a white police officer on Sunday in Kenosha, Wisconsin in front of his children. He is now paralyzed from the waist down. Doctors do not know if his paralysis will be permanent, theGRIO previously reported.

“Before I am an athlete, I am a Black woman. And as a Black woman I feel as though there are much more important matters at hand that need immediate attention, rather than watching me play tennis,” the Japanese tennis star wrote in a lengthy post on Twitter.

Read More: Naomi Osaka surpasses Serena Williams as the highest-paid female athlete

Osaka, who has a Japanese mother and Haitian father, added: “I don’t expect anything drastic to happen with me not playing, but if I can get a conversation started in a majority white sport I consider that a step in the right direction.”

“Watching the continued genocide of Black people at the hand of police is honestly making me sick to my stomach. I’m exhausted of having a new hashtag pop up every few days and I’m extremely tired of having this same conversation over and over again,” Osaka continued. “When will it ever be enough? #JacobBlake, #BreonnaTaylor, #ElijahMcclain, #GeorgeFloyd.”

The fourth-seeded, 2-time Grand Slam champion defeated No. 12 Anett Kontaveit 4-6 6-2 7-5 on Wednesday to reach the Western & Southern Open semifinals for the first time, per Reuters. Osaka was due to meet No. 14 Elise Mertens in Thursday’s semi-final at the WTA Premier event in New York.

Her announcement to back out of the match follows reports that NBA, WNBA, MLB and Major League Soccer games were called off Wednesday as athletes protested police brutality and demanded racial justice.

Milwaukee Bucks release statement as WNBA, MLB, MLS also postpone games

The Milwaukee Bucks say they were inspired by the shooting of Jacob Blake and other recent tragedies involving Black people and police as the sports world reacts to the boycott

The sports world made history today as the Milwaukee Bucks took a united stand against racism and police brutality today, boycotting their potential closeout game 5 playoff game against the Orlando Magic.

Read More: Milwaukee Bucks boycott of game five of the NBA playoffs sparks shutdown of today’s games

The team said they decided to do so after the police shooting of 29-year-old Jacob Blake. Blake was shot in front of his children when attempting to get into his car after reportedly breaking up a fight between two women. The shooting took place in Kenosha, Wisconsin, a city just 45 minutes from where the Bucks play in Milwaukee.

Afterwards, the players met with media in the NBA bubble in Orlando, Florida to issue a statement as a team.

“The past four months have shed a light on the ongoing racial injustices facing our African-American communities. Citizens around the country have used their voices and platforms to speak out against these wrongdoings,” the statement read.

“Over the last few days in our home state of Wisconsin, we’ve seen the horrendous video of Jacob Blake being shot in the back seven times by a police officer in Kenosha, and the additional shooting of protestors. Despite the overwhelming plea for change, there has been no action, so our focus today cannot be on basketball.”

Boston Celtics v Milwaukee Bucks

The statement continued with a call for accountability.

“When we take the court and represent Milwaukee and Wisconsin, we are expected to play at a high level, give maximum effort and hold each other accountable. We hold ourselves to that standard, and in this moment, we are demanding the same from our lawmakers and law enforcement.”

The Bucks’ boycott sent ripples through the sports world and the WNBA, who are sequestered in Bradenton, Florida, and who have been active voices in the league’s effort against social injustice, decided to join the men in not playing tonight’s scheduled games. Members of the teams assembled to play kneeled together and then issued a statement.

The Atlanta Dream’s Elizabeth Williams read it, saying in part:

“What we have seen over the past few months and most recently with the brutal police shooting of Jacob Blake is overwhelming and while we hurt for Jacob and his community, we also have an opportunity to keep the focus on the issues and demand change.”

The Milwaukee Brewers, scheduled to play the Cincinnati Reds tonight, also joined the boycott and did not play.

The Orlando Magic had no prior knowledge of the boycott but in a statement from the team, owned by the DeVos family, which includes Education Secretary Betsy Devos‘ husband, said they were supportive of the move.

Orlando Magic player Michael Carter-Williams issued a statement on behalf of the team.

“We weren’t given advanced notice about the decision but we are happy to stand in solidarity with Milwaukee, Jacob, and the entire NBA community,” he said. “Change is coming.”

The Bucks ownership and management said that while they also didn’t know about the boycott beforehand, they stood with their players.

“We fully support our players and the decision they made. Although we did not know beforehand, we would have wholeheartedly agreed with them. The only way to bring change is to shine a light on the racial injustices that are happening in front of us. Our players have done that and we will continue to stand alongside them and demand accountability and change,” the Bucks said in a statement.

Support from the rest of the sports world was swift and vocal. TNT co-host Kenny Smith walked off the set of Inside the NBA in solidarity with his former colleagues in an extraordinary TV moment.

Support from all parts of the sports universe came quickly as players from the NBA, NFL, and other sports figures and teams responded to the boycott. Tennis star Naomi Osaka announced she would not play in her upcoming semifinal match in the Southern Open, and the Los Angeles Dodgers announced they would sit out tonight’s game against the San Francisco Giants.

Major League Soccer announced that they would also boycott their next games in support of the Milwaukee Bucks and the other teams.

Former President Barack Obama saluted the players for their advocacy and shared a clip of LA Clippers coach Doc Rivers. Rivers spoke of his frustrations about unarmed Black people being killed without consequence.

But perhaps the night’s most moving commentary came from former NBA star Chris Webber, who lamented having to explain the constant deaths to his young relatives, remembered how inspired he felt when Charles Barkley came to his high school when he was a teen and encouraged the league to continue its efforts to advocate for change.

“I have young nephews that I have to explain about death before they’ve even seen it in a movie,” Webber said. “If not now, when? If not during a pandemic, and countless lives being lost, if not know, when?”

“We know nothing is going to change tomorrow,” Webber said, invoking the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Medgar Evers. “We understand that it’s not going to end right away. But don’t listen to these people telling you to not do anything because it’s not going to end right away. “

Webber said he encouraged young social justice advocates to continue the fight.

“You are starting something for the next generation to take over…. I applaud it because it is the young people leading the way and I applaud them.”

Kenosha police chief blames protesters for their own deaths because they were ‘out after curfew’

Kenosha Police Chief Daniel Miskinis claimed there may not have been an incident if the protesters were not out in the streets

The Kenosha, Wisconsin police chief blamed two protesters who were fatally shot for their own deaths because they violated curfew.

Read More: Kyle Rittenhouse, 17, arrested for murder in Wisconsin protest shooting

Chief Daniel Miskinis held a press conference on Wednesday to offer an update on the protests that have overwhelmed the city of 100,000 after Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old father of three, was shot in the back on Sunday by police.

Miskinis said that the two victims who were shot during a protest on Tuesday bore some responsibility.

“Persons who were out after the curfew became engaged in some type of disturbance, and persons were shot. Everybody involved was out after the curfew. I’m not going to make a great deal of that, but the point is the curfew is in place to protect,” Miskinis said.

“Had persons not been out involved in violation of that, perhaps the situation that unfolded would not have happened.”

Miskinis added that the deceased individuals were among the people who brought violence to Kenosha. He continued to refer to them as “persons” only confirming they were 25 and 36-year-old Wisconsin residents.

“It is the persons who were involved after the legal time, involved in illegal activity, that brought violence to this community,” he said.

As theGrio previously reported, Kyle Rittenhouse was charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of the two men who have not yet been publicly identified.

Rittenhouse, 17, used a semi-automatic rifle in the attack and fled the state but was arrested in Illinois. Despite being labeled as a “fugitive from justice,” he was apprehended without incident and Miskinis would not call the crime a homicide.

(Photo: Twitter)

Miskinis believed Rittenhouse allegedly “was involved in the use of firearms to resolve whatever conflict was in place” which resulted in “disturbance that led to the use of deadly force.”

Miskinis was of the view that armed civilians had every right to exercise their constitutional rights.

“Across this nation there have been armed civilians who have come out to exercise their constitutional right and to potentially protect property,” he said. “Am I aware that groups exist? Yes, but they weren’t invited to come.”

But Slate reports that Rittenhouse was among an armed group that police didn’t seem to mind being on the scene, telling them they “appreciated” them and even providing them with water.

Witnesses and video recorded near the shootings may show that Rittenhouse was allowed to walk away after killing two people on account of the “high stress” of the situation and “tunnel vision” of Kenosha officers.

“It’s no different than those on the protesters’ side who are walking around armed and those who are counterprotesters, or those who are just witnessing, to be armed, so I’m not going to address any more issues relative to that,” Miskinis said.

Miskinis also claimed there may be some justification for Blake’s shooting. Bystander video caught the incident and it has since gone viral.

“I’m not going to address that because it is one snippet of a very large situation and much as what’s happened across this nation for a long period of time, it’s focused on what you see in this much of an incident,” Miskinis said, referencing other Black men being shot by police.

“It’s unfair to everybody involved, whether you’re the person using force or the person being arrested that the picture isn’t painted.”

‘Once again a Black man has been shot by the police in broad daylight with the whole world watching.’

Joe Biden has condemned the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin and assured his family that “justice must and will be done.”

“What I saw on that video makes me sick. Once again a Black man, Jacob Blake, has been shot by the police in broad daylight with the whole world watching,” Biden said in a video posted Wednesday to Twitter. “Protesting brutality is a right and absolutely necessary. But burning down communities is not protest, it’s needless violence. Violence that endangers lives,” the Democratic presidential nominee continued. “That’s wrong.”

Biden shared that he spoke to Jacob’s family and noted “our hearts are with his family, especially his children. It’s horrible what they saw, watching their father get shot.”

Biden urged his non-Black supporters to “put yourself in the shoes of every Black father and Black mother in this country, and ask: Is this what we want America to be? Is this the country we should be?” he said.

His VP nominee Kamala Harris said at an event on Wednesday that she also spoke to the family.

“What happened there is so tragic and still represents the two systems of justice in America,” Harris said. “There are still two systems of justice in America and … we need to fight again for that ideal that says all people are supposed to be treated equally, which is still not happening.”

Blake was shot multiple times in the back by police on Sunday in Kenosha, Wisconsin in front of his children. He is now paralyzed from the waist down.

Wisconsin AG identifies Kenosha officer who shot Jacob Blake

Officer Rusten Sheskey, who served on the police force for seven years, has been placed on administrative leave

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul on Wednesday identified the Kenosha officer who shot Jacob Blake, an unarmed Black man, several times in the back as he tried to enter his car on Sunday during a police encounter.

Kaul held a press conference in the city that has been met with unrest for three consecutive nights and read out a press release that was made public shortly after his televised address.

In the press release, AG Kaul identified Officer Rusten Sheskey as the cop who fired his service weapon seven times while holding Blake’s shirt. “No other officer fired their weapon,” he said.

The press release goes on to state that Kenosha police officers responded to a call from a woman who said her boyfriend was present and was not supposed to be on the premises. Officers attempted to arrest Blake, 29, and eventually deployed a taser, however, “the taser was not successful.”

As shown in cell phone footage from witnesses, Officer Sheskey shot Blake seven times as he moved into his vehicle. Kaul confirmed reports that there was no police body cam of the incident, as the department does not have any.

The press release also claimed that Blake admitted to having a knife in his possession, which was recovered on the driver’s side of the floorboard. There were no additional weapons found in Blake’s vehicle.

The attorney general’s statement said that the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is continuing to review the evidence of the case and is aiming to provide a report of the incident to the state’s prosecutor within 30 days.

“If the prosecutor determines there is no bases for prosecution of the law enforcement officer, DCI will thereafter make the report available to the public,” the statement said.

Blake was reportedly left paralyzed from the waist down after the shooting, due to damage to his spinal cord. Famed attorney Ben Crump, who is representing Blake and his family, said it would take a “miracle” for him to walk again.

Four men indicted on arson charges in connection with Minneapolis precinct fire

Four men in their 20s are accused of burning down the building

A federal grand jury has indicted four Minnesota men on arson charges in the burning of the Minneapolis police’s Third District police building.

Dylan Shakespeare Robinson, 22; Davon De-Andre Turner, 24; Bryce Michael Williams, 26; and Branden Michael Wolfe, 23 were indicted for setting the fire.

Williams and Turner allegedly “lit a Molotov cocktail,” while Wolfe allegedly “pushed a barrel into a fire at the entrance of the Third Precinct building to accelerate an existing fire,” The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

According to the indictment, Robinson and an unknown person “lit an incendiary device,” and that device was then tossed by another unknown person.

A crowd of protesters chanted, “Burn it down, burn it down,” according to KSTP, an ABC News affiliate in Minneapolis. After the police department fence was torn down by trespassers, the four young men, along with unidentified co-conspirators, entered the building.

Despite the arrests, federal investigators are still seeking tips and information regarding the fires at the police district and other businesses during the unrest in Minneapolis in late May.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that the fire was set three days after George Floyd’s death.

Floyd died on May 25 during an arrest by four Minneapolis police officers, who have since been charged with murder and accessory to murder. Protests began in Minneapolis after a bystander’s video of his last moments went viral.

Robinson, Wolfe, and Williams were already facing federal charges in the fire, but today’s indictment combined their cases, according to the Star-Tribune.

Meet The 16-Year-Old Wigmaker Giving Back To Kids With Cancer

Trenton Lee

Sixteen-year-old Trenton Lee has already made his name making luxurious wigs for various celebrities from actress Tichina Arnold, Cardi B, and Blac Chyna. His notable reputation making his signature wig designs led him to create his own hair company, Luxe by Trenton. Now the teen entrepreneur wants to give back to those less fortunate by helping put a smile on children suffering from hair loss due to medical reasons.

Lee has partnered with nonprofit organization Ronald McDonald House Charities to help create custom wigs for sick children with different ailments that can cause hair loss. He is also working with the organization to build a children’s salon in his hometown of Kansas City. Lee says given his success with his hair company, it was important for him to pay it forward and help those within his community.

“I had a conversation with my mother and told her that I wanted to be able to do something for my community,” Lee tells Essence. “While making custom wig units for high profile celebrities is fun and exciting, my real passion lies in helping those who have cancer and lost their hair and working with them to restore their sense of dignity, pride, and self-esteem.”

“This all started because I was being bullied for being different,” he added. “I want to expand my business so that I can provide resources to help others who may be experiencing bullying because they look, act, and think differently. So the [pandemic] set back is not stopping any of the projects — I am still designing wigs for clients and [still] finding ways to continue to be inspired!”

National Science Foundation announces MIT-led Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Fundamental Interactions

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) announced today an investment of more than $100 million to establish five artificial intelligence (AI) institutes, each receiving roughly $20 million over five years. One of these, the NSF AI Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Fundamental Interactions (IAIFI), will be led by MIT’s Laboratory for Nuclear Science (LNS) and become the intellectual home of more than 25 physics and AI senior researchers at MIT and Harvard, Northeastern, and Tufts universities.

By merging research in physics and AI, the IAIFI seeks to tackle some of the most challenging problems in physics, including precision calculations of the structure of matter, gravitational-wave detection of merging black holes, and the extraction of new physical laws from noisy data.

“The goal of the IAIFI is to develop the next generation of AI technologies, based on the transformative idea that artificial intelligence can directly incorporate physics intelligence,” says Jesse Thaler, an associate professor of physics at MIT, LNS researcher, and IAIFI director.  “By fusing the ‘deep learning’ revolution with the time-tested strategies of ‘deep thinking’ in physics, we aim to gain a deeper understanding of our universe and of the principles underlying intelligence.”

IAIFI researchers say their approach will enable making groundbreaking physics discoveries, and advance AI more generally, through the development of novel AI approaches that incorporate first principles from fundamental physics.

“Invoking the simple principle of translational symmetry — which in nature gives rise to conservation of momentum — led to dramatic improvements in image recognition,” says Mike Williams, an associate professor of physics at MIT, LNS researcher, and IAIFI deputy director. “We believe incorporating more complex physics principles will revolutionize how AI is used to study fundamental interactions, while simultaneously advancing the foundations of AI.”

In addition, a core element of the IAIFI mission is to transfer their technologies to the broader AI community.

“Recognizing the critical role of AI, NSF is investing in collaborative research and education hubs, such as the NSF IAIFI anchored at MIT, which will bring together academia, industry, and government to unearth profound discoveries and develop new capabilities,” says NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan. “Just as prior NSF investments enabled the breakthroughs that have given rise to today’s AI revolution, the awards being announced today will drive discovery and innovation that will sustain American leadership and competitiveness in AI for decades to come.”

Research in AI and fundamental interactions

Fundamental interactions are described by two pillars of modern physics: at short distances by the Standard Model of particle physics, and at long distances by the Lambda Cold Dark Matter model of Big Bang cosmology. Both models are based on physical first principles such as causality and space-time symmetries.  An abundance of experimental evidence supports these theories, but also exposes where they are incomplete, most pressingly that the Standard Model does not explain the nature of dark matter, which plays an essential role in cosmology.

AI has the potential to help answer these questions and others in physics.

For many physics problems, the governing equations that encode the fundamental physical laws are known. However, undertaking key calculations within these frameworks, as is essential to test our understanding of the universe and guide physics discovery, can be computationally demanding or even intractable. IAIFI researchers are developing AI for such first-principles theory studies, which naturally require AI approaches that rigorously encode physics knowledge.

“My group is developing new provably exact algorithms for theoretical nuclear physics,” says Phiala Shanahan, an assistant professor of physics and LNS researcher at MIT. “Our first-principles approach turns out to have applications in other areas of science and even in robotics, leading to exciting collaborations with industry partners.”

Incorporating physics principles into AI could also have a major impact on many experimental applications, such as designing AI methods that are more easily verifiable. IAIFI researchers are working to enhance the scientific potential of various facilities, including the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Laser Interferometer Gravity Wave Observatory (LIGO).

“Gravitational-wave detectors are among the most sensitive instruments on Earth, but the computational systems used to operate them are mostly based on technology from the previous century,” says Principal Research Scientist Lisa Barsotti of the MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research. “We have only begun to scratch the surface of what can be done with AI; just enough to see that the IAIFI will be a game-changer.”

The unique features of these physics applications also offer compelling research opportunities in AI more broadly. For example, physics-informed architectures and hardware development could lead to advances in the speed of AI algorithms, and work in statistical physics is providing a theoretical foundation for understanding AI dynamics.

“Physics has inspired many time-tested ideas in machine learning: maximizing entropy, Boltzmann machines, and variational inference, to name a few,” says Pulkit Agrawal, an assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT, and researcher in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). “We believe that close interaction between physics and AI researchers will be the catalyst that leads to the next generation of machine learning algorithms.”

Cultivating early-career talent

AI technologies are advancing rapidly, making it both important and challenging to train junior researchers at the intersection of physics and AI. The IAIFI aims to recruit and train a talented and diverse group of early-career researchers, including at the postdoc level through its IAIFI Fellows Program.

“By offering our fellows their choice of research problems, and the chance to focus on cutting-edge challenges in physics and AI, we will prepare many talented young scientists to become future leaders in both academia and industry,” says MIT professor of physics Marin Soljacic of the Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE).

IAIFI researchers hope these fellows will spark interdisciplinary and multi-investigator collaborations, generate new ideas and approaches, translate physics challenges beyond their native domains, and help develop a common language across disciplines. Applications for the inaugural IAIFI fellows are due in mid-October.

Another related effort spearheaded by Thaler, Williams, and Alexander Rakhlin, an associate professor of brain and cognitive science at MIT and researcher in the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS), is the development of a new interdisciplinary PhD program in physics, statistics, and data science, a collaborative effort between the Department of Physics and the Statistics and Data Science Center.

“Statistics and data science are among the foundational pillars of AI. Physics joining the interdisciplinary doctoral program will bring forth new ideas and areas of exploration, while fostering a new generation of leaders at the intersection of physics, statistics, and AI," says Rakhlin.

Education, outreach, and partnerships

The IAIFI aims to cultivate “human intelligence” by promoting education and outreach. For example, IAIFI members will contribute to establishing a MicroMasters degree program at MIT for students from non-traditional backgrounds.

“We will increase the number of students in both physics and AI from underrepresented groups by providing fellowships for the MicroMasters program,” says Isaac Chuang, professor of physics and electrical engineering, senior associate dean for digital learning, and RLE researcher at MIT. “We also plan on working with undergraduate MIT Summer Research Program students, to introduce them to the tools of physics and AI research that they might not have access to at their home institutions.”

The IAIFI plans to expand its impact via numerous outreach efforts, including a K-12 program in which students are given data from the LHC and LIGO and tasked with rediscovering the Higgs boson and gravitational waves.

“After confirming these recent Nobel Prizes, we can ask the students to find tiny artificial signals embedded in the data using AI and fundamental physics principles,” says assistant professor of physics Phil Harris, an LNS researcher at MIT. “With projects like this, we hope to disseminate knowledge about — and enthusiasm for — physics, AI, and their intersection.”

In addition, the IAIFI will collaborate with industry and government to advance the frontiers of both AI and physics, as well as societal sectors that stand to benefit from AI innovation. IAIFI members already have many active collaborations with industry partners, including DeepMind, Microsoft Research, and Amazon.

“We will tackle two of the greatest mysteries of science: how our universe works and how intelligence works,” says MIT professor of physics Max Tegmark, an MIT Kavli Institute researcher. “Our key strategy is to link them, using physics to improve AI and AI to improve physics. We're delighted that the NSF is investing the vital seed funding needed to launch this exciting effort.”

Building new connections at MIT and beyond

Leveraging MIT’s culture of collaboration, the IAIFI aims to generate new connections and to strengthen existing ones across MIT and beyond.

Of the 27 current IAIFI senior investigators, 16 are at MIT and members of the LNS, RLE, MIT Kavli Institute, CSAIL, and IDSS. In addition, IAIFI investigators are members of related NSF-supported efforts at MIT, such as the Center for Brains, Minds, and Machines within the McGovern Institute for Brain Research and the MIT-Harvard Center for Ultracold Atoms.

“We expect a lot of creative synergies as we bring physics and computer science together to study AI," says Bill Freeman, the Thomas and Gerd Perkins Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and researcher in CSAIL. "I'm excited to work with my physics colleagues on topics that bridge these fields."

More broadly, the IAIFI aims to make Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the surrounding Boston area a hub for collaborative efforts to advance both physics and AI.

“As we teach in 8.01 and 8.02, part of what makes physics so powerful is that it provides a universal language that can be applied to a wide range of scientific problems,” says Thaler. “Through the IAIFI, we will create a common language that transcends the intellectual borders between physics and AI to facilitate groundbreaking discoveries.”
