With Trump Rollback, School Lunch Could Get More White Bread

(AP Photo)

NEW YORK (AP) — Is white bread about to make a comeback on school lunch menus?

After complaints of gritty macaroni and cardboard pizza crusts, the Trump administration rolled back a rule that required foods like pasta and bread be made with whole grains. The cafeteria directors who lobbied for the change say they just want greater flexibility to serve foods like white bread — which are more processed and have less fiber — when whole grains don’t work.

In Vermont, the relaxed rule means white rice will be served with beans again. In Oregon, macaroni and cheese may return. And in South Dakota, students may notice a change with their soup.

“The staff asked right away, ‘Oh my God, can we go back to the other saltines?'” said Gay Anderson, a school lunch director and president of the School Nutrition Association, which represents cafeteria operators and suppliers like Domino’s and Kellogg.

The rollback addresses rules on grains, milk and salt championed by former first lady Michelle Obama.

Since 2014, schools had been required to serve only whole grain versions of food as part of the national school lunch program, a critical source of free and reduced-price meals for millions of children. The idea is that whole grains would be more nourishing and help cultivate healthy habits amid alarming obesity rates .

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, which is among the parties suing over the rollback, notes the standards were based on the government’s own dietary guidelines and that most schools were successfully meeting them.

But cafeteria operators said the rule was unrealistic, and that many students are used to the refined grains they eat at home. They said costs were higher, cooking was more difficult and that students were throwing away more food. The School Nutrition Association said it’s more important that children who rely on the lunches eat something, and that the rule ignored cultural preferences, such as for flour tortillas in the Southwest or for white rice among Asian students.

To ease the transition to whole grains, the U.S. Department of Agriculture let schools apply for temporary waivers to serve select dishes that didn’t meet the whole-grain rule. For the last school year, it said about 20 percent of districts asked permission to serve refined grains that are enriched to add back some nutrients.

Among the frequently waived foods were pasta , pizza , tortillas and biscuits , which one Georgia lunch official joked affects the “tests scores of rednecks ,” according to records obtained by The Associated Press from state agencies. Other waived foods included beignets, cinnamon rolls, corn dogs, sugar cookies and Pop Tarts.

One district requested a waiver for croissants because it said students don’t like the whole-grain version.

“Plus they are 20 cents more per serving,” the district said.

Then in December, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said the USDA was going back to the old standard: At least half of grain foods must be rich in whole grains. The agency said that does away with the red tape of making schools get waivers, and gives schools more flexibility to offer wholesome meals that also reduce food waste.

“We had a new secretary of agriculture that listened to us,” said Jean Dean, a school lunch director in Idaho.

Schools that didn’t want to go through the trouble of applying for waivers could benefit, she said.

Whitney Ellersick, a school lunch director in Portland, Oregon, said the change means her district will no longer need a waiver for its lasagna. But she was surprised by the extent of the rollback.

“I was a little shocked to see it go to 50 percent,” Ellersick said.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest said the USDA’s rollback may be halting progress made by schools, which could be tempted to bring back more refined grains that cost less or are easier to make. Already, the group notes the USDA defines “whole grain rich” as being half whole grain, meaning there’s built-in wiggle room to make bread and pasta students won’t mind.

The American Heart Association likewise criticized the decision and is calling on school districts to stick to the previous standards, which also included stricter rules on salt and milk. Among those that plan to do so is Boston, where fifth grader Trinity Wilson likes the brown rice.

She said it’s is healthier than white rice. “I know that because my mom told me,” Wilson said.

Some school lunch officials say the rollback could help smaller districts that don’t have access to as many products. In Arkansas, students in the Magnet Cove district accepted whole-grain Pop Tarts and other changes, officials say, but still prefer the old noodles, biscuits and rolls.

“They’re tastier, softer and fluffier,” said Danny Thomas, the district’s superintendent.

In Burlington, Vermont, white rice and beans can return to menus. Doug Davis, the district’s food director and incoming president of the School Nutrition Association, said it’s a healthy dish that students will actually eat.

To avoid buying two types of rice, Davis said white rice will likely also be used in stir fries and soups. He plans to stick mostly to whole grains, but he appreciates not having to.

Whole-grain pasta isn’t ideal for mac and cheese, Davis noted.

“Would we make a change on that? I don’t know,” he said.

From Sorrow to Strategy: 7 Black Women Who’ve Turned Their Agony Into Activism

Lora King is keeping the legacy of her father, the late Rodney King, alive almost three decades after he survived a notorious police beating that triggered L.A. Riots.

Back in 1991, four white LAPD officers were charged with tasering and viciously beating Rodney King with their batons and boots during a police stop. Despite video evidence of the attack, an all-white jury acquitted the cops, sparking public outrage, the onset of rioting, and a nationwide call to end police violence against the African American community.

Now, at 35 years old, Lora King launched a scholarship program to honor her father, who passed away in 2012, and uplift other black dads, according to The L.A. Times.  The goal of her “I am a King” scholarship is to encourage black fathers to play a more active role in their children’s lives by sponsoring special events for dads and their kids. The program will provide grants on a rolling basis that will fund a range of events, from a family dinner to a trip to Disneyland. In addition, in 2016 she launched the Rodney King Foundation to advance social justice and human rights causes.

King is part of a long list of black women who have used the tragedy of a loved one victimized by racialized violence as motivation to affect change. Some of the most notable women are the “Mothers of the Movement,” who joined forces to advocate for police, criminal justice, and gun reform following the deaths of their unarmed African American children by law enforcement or gun violence.

Here are six other black women who’ve turned their agony into activism by pushing for institutional and structural change, fighting for social justice, and raising awareness around the disproportionate rates of violence against black Americans.

Lucy McBath

In 2012, Lucy McBath’s 17-year-old son, Jordan Davis, was shot and killed by a white man at a Florida gas station over an argument about loud music. When the killer invoked Florida’s controversial Stand Your Ground law as a defense, McBath asserted herself onto the frontlines of the fight for gun control and justice. She retired from a 30-year career with Delta Airlines to become the national spokesperson for both Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.

Eventually, McBath’s son’s killer was sentenced to life in prison, but that did not stop her activism around gun reform. In 2018, she launched a successful campaign for Georgia’s 6th Congressional District. Now, as a U.S. representative, McBath has co-sponsored gun control legislation that would require universal background checks for those seeking to purchase armed weapons.

Since Sybrina Fulton’s son Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by white vigilante George Zimmerman in Florida, Fulton has been working to expand voting rights in the state and has become one of the most visible members of the “Mothers of the Movement.” She also helped found the Trayvon Martin Foundation, an organization that seeks to find solutions for youth, help parents who have been victimized by senseless violence, provide scholarships to inner-city youth, and strengthen a positive self-image within the community.

Gwen Carr

Mothers of the Movement

Gwen Carr (Twitter.com/GwenCarrEric)

Gwen Carr said that the death of her son, Eric Garner, who died in 2014 after being placed in a police chokehold, was her political awakening. In an editorial published on NBC News’ Think column in October, Carr talked about how the tragedy has encouraged her to become more civically engaged.

Me, I don’t like to write. So instead, I go up to Albany, and I get in the faces of our politicians. I try to emphasize what I want from our government, and what I need elected officials to do. For instance, I went to Albany with a group of other New York mothers in 2015, and got Governor Cuomo to sign an executive order that allowed a special prosecutor from the state attorney general’s office to investigate all police killings of unarmed people for a year. (He’s since extended it.) And what this does is that, when these senseless killings take place, the cases are taken it out of the hands of the local district attorney and put in the hands of the state attorney general

The shooting death of the unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014 sparked nationwide protests and fueled the Black Lives Matter movement. A grand jury chose not to indict the white officer who fatally shot Brown while his hands were in the air. Brown’s mother, Lesley McSpadden, however, has taken up the cause, running for a seat in the 2019 Ferguson city council. Although she did not win that race, McSpadden revealed that she is open to running again in 2020.

“I did this because we were all devastated over what we saw almost five years ago,” McSpadden told CNN last month. “I was personally devastated because that’s my son. My children witnessed the devastation.” She added, “After watching Ferguson over these years, I’ve looked for progress and I haven’t seen anything. My candidacy is the first step of building towards justice for my son and building towards a part of his legacy to make sure that my son did not die in vain.”

Tiffany Crutcher

Tiffany Crutcher (Twitter.com/TiffanyCrutcher)

The death of Terence Crutcher, a 40-year-old unarmed black man who was fatally shot by police in Tulsa, Oklahoma, while his hands were in the air, shook the nation in 2016. The incident occurred when Crutcher’s SUV broke down in the middle of the road. But, instead of receiving car assistance, he was met by several police officers who drew their weapons and typecasted him as a “bad dude.” Video footage shows the officers walked closely behind Crutcher while his hands were up. He then stood beside his car moments before he was tasered and a white female officer opened fire and killed him, arguing that Crutcher failed to adhere to police commands and was reaching inside of the driver side window for a weapon. Crutcher’s attorneys, however, insist that his car window was rolled up.

Following his tragic death, his sister, Tiffany, quit her job as a healthcare provider and became a full-time political activist. In addition to working as a field organizer for Doug Jones’ senatorial campaign in Alabama, she has been involved in several judicial races in the state. “The death of my twin brother forced me to get involved [in politics],” she said, according to The Root. She also launched a national Campaign Against Bad Cops, which seeks to abolish the immunity that protects government officials from being sued for discriminatory actions performed within their official capacity. Furthermore, she and her family are fighting to lower the legal standard an officer has to meet so that they can be more easily indicted for biased killings.

Since then, Reed-Veal has used her voice to speak out against police brutality and state-sponsored abuse by law enforcement. She, along with the eight other “Mothers of the Movement,” also delivered a powerful speech at the 2016 Democratic National Convention where she endorsed Hillary Clinton for president.

Brooklyn Apartment Tenants Rise Up Against Landlord’s Plans to Install Facial Recognition Technology

Atlantic Plaza Towers is a 718-unit apartment complex in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Brownsville, which is largely African American. Tenants there are fighting the landlord’s plans to install facial recognition technology in their building.

The landlord, Nelson Management Group, filed an application to install the tech with New York State Homes & Community Renewal (NYSHCR)—which can approve or deny the request.

This is the first time a property manager filed an application for facial recognition technology with NYSHCR according to The Brooklyn Eagle.

The tenants, who normally use a key fob to access the building, are claiming the plans for facial recognition are problematic for several reasons.

[Related: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND ALGORITHMS: 21ST CENTURY TOOLS FOR RACISM]

First, as with other inner-city areas in Brooklyn such as Bedford-Stuyvesant and Bushwick—once largely African American communities—Brownsville is undergoing gentrification. Nearby the East New York section of Brooklyn, the area has close proximity to Manhattan and relatively low rental fees.

The tenants say the facial recognition technology is a way to increase gentrification in the area and attract more outsiders

Second—there are data privacy concerns. “Residents should not have to live in fear that landlords are tracking their comings and goings and amassing sensitive data on tenants and their guests,” the New York Civil Liberties Union stated in a letter, according to The Brooklyn Eagle.

Lastly, there are issues with facial recognition technology’s ability to scan darker skin.

The proposed technology is made by StoneLock. In an emailed statement from the StoneLock CEO¸Colleen Dunlap, to BLACK ENTERPRISE, she addressed some of the concerns:

“Unlike surveillance systems that captures photographs of the general public, StoneLock only interacts with enrolled users and does not perform surveillance on the user once access to the premises is authorized.

In order to maintain an optimized system, user data (even the 5% of the user profile) never leaves the system, always existing either on a Gateway or pushed to a GO within the control of the customer. StoneLock does not have access to any user data and cannot provide any user data in response to government or third-party inquiry.”

BLACK ENTERPRISE also reached out to the New York City Mayor’s Office, Nelson Management Group, and the NYSHCR for comment and will update this article when received.

Nipsey Hussle’s Sister Denied Temporary Guardianship Of His Daughter

A judge has denied a request made by Nipsey Hussle’s sister for an emergency order that would have made her temporary guardianship of the late rapper’s eldest daughter, Emani Asghedom.

Hussle and his ex-girlfriend Tanisha Foster share joint custody of Emani. The child spends the week with her mother while Nipsey would have her on the weekends, according to documents obtained by The Blast. Nipsey’s sister, Samantha Smith, claims her brother was Emani’s primary caregiver because Foster is unable to properly care for her child, and this is why Smith was seeking custody following Hussle’s murder.

On Tuesday, Smith filed a petition for legal custody of her niece. The docs state she lived with her brother and his ex for the first half of the little girl’s life and “assisted” with care for the child on a “consistent” basis, New York Daily News reports.

But the judge’s ruling reportedly states: “No urgency demonstrated for granting this relief prior to hearing on May 14th.” Smith indicated in her filing that she did not want to inform Foster of her request, but the judge ruled that she must be given notice of the hearing, Complex reports.

Smith claims her push for temporary guardianship is motivated by her desire “to ensure that she can continue to live with family members with whom she has always had close ties.”

According to several published reports, Hussle’s family also believes Foster cannot provide a stable environment for Emani.

“Emani now requires a legal guardian. Her father is gone,” Smith’s filing in Los Angeles County probate court states.

“Petitioner and the rest of Emani’s paternal family want to ensure the continued stability for Emani and ensure that she will be able to maintain her current and ongoing relationship with (her) paternal family members with whom she is close and upon whom she has always relied,” the petition states.

Smith said guardianship is “necessary” to “ensure” Emani “can continue to live with family members with whom she has always had close ties.”

If granted full custody, Foster would have a legal right to collect money from Nipsey’s estate, per Complex.

Hussle, whose real name was Ermias Asghedom, was fatally shot outside his South Los Angeles clothing store on March 31. The alleged shooter, Eric Holder, has been charged with his murder and the attempted murders of two men who were injured in the attack. He has pleaded not guilty.

Man Kills His Girlfriend’s Other Lover

A New Orleans man is accused of shooting and killing another man who a witness said vandalized his car. But at a preliminary hearing Tuesday (April 30), the case took an unexpected turn.

Tyrone Cannon, 41, was reportedly arrested in February on suspicion of the murder of 43-year-old Kenneth Jones. During Tuesday’s preliminary hearing, NOPD Homicide Detective Tanisha Sykes reportedly reviled that Cannon and Jones were romantically involved with the same woman in the months leading up the shooting. A witness account from that woman was later used to secure an arrest warrant for Cannon on the murder charge.

According to the Times-Picayune, a witness was leaving his house with his daughter Feb. 9 when he saw someone cut off Jones with a blue car, exit his vehicle and begin arguing with Jones. The man reportedly told police Jones punched at the male driver, who responded by pulling out a gun and shooting Jones. When Jones fell to the ground, the shooter then stood over him and shot him two more times before fleeing the scene by car.

Detectives learned that Jones and Cannon had been involved with the same woman. She told police that Cannon had been with her prior to the shooting and then returned afterward. The woman said, upon his return, Cannon admitted to chasing down and shooting Jones after discovering Jones had vandalized Cannon’s blue 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis.

After receiving identification from the woman, police then showed a photo of Cannon to the other witness, who confirmed he was the shooter he saw exit the blue car.

Cannon has not been formally charged with murder. The District Attorney’s Office has 120 days to secure an indictment.

RIP: Freddie Gray’s Best Friend Killed In West Baltimore

Juan Grant has died following a West Baltimore shooting over the weekend.

Grant, a close family friend of Freddie Gray’s and activist following Gray’s death from injuries suffered in police custody in 2015, was driving back to his grandmother’s home on Westwood Avenue Saturday evening when his car collided with a dirt bike on the 1800 block of N. Payson St. He got out of the car and that’s when he was shot.

Grant was taken to the hospital where he later died from gunshot wounds to the head. His death came on the four-year anniversary of Gray’s funeral and the riot in Baltimore later that day.

A vigil for Grant is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Payson Street and North Avenue, where he died. No one has been arrested in connection to his death yet.

Compton Man Who Impregnated Twin Sisters Gets Dragged On Social Media

A Compton man who has proudly bragged online that he’s “the only n***a with twin baby mommas,” is being dragged for filth by social media users who are not impressed with his lifestyle choices.

Keonyae Banks says the twin sisters are “cool” with sharing the same man, and they certainly seem to be thrilled that both are expecting his child.

Snapshots from their Instagram accounts show Keonyae and his two women showing off their pregnant bellies — see pics below.

The Shade Room dig a little digging in their backstory and discovered the sisters are named Nia and Nydia. They are also roommates, and allegedly met Keonyae at a gym where he worked as a personal trainer. Nia got pregnant first, followed by Nydia a month later.

Via TSR:

We exclusively spoke to Keonyae and he says things are just fine. They are all okay with the situation and he says they’ve been happily in a “throuple” for a while now. As far as the sex of the babies, Nia is expecting her baby girl on May 6th, while her twin sister Nydia is expecting a boy on June 6th.

Both sisters claim that they make a happy “throuple” with Keonyae— and as long as their unusual union continues to work, they plan to remain in a relationship and be great co-parents.

Meanwhile, as The Whistler notes, social media users have showered the trio with criticism. One user wrote: “That’s basically Incest… That’s gross. And I guess I don’t share my man period. But to me it’s pure ignorant. He’s disgusting for that.”

Another said, “WoW, I hope you got money to send them kids to therapy because they’re going to need it.”

Nia and Nydia’s children will be cousins and half-siblings.

Must See: Watch The Trailer For The New Toni Morrison Documentary [VIDEO]

An Evening With Toni Morrison

Source: Kris Connor / Getty

Via Madamenoire:

One of the real tragic things about our Black legends is that more often than not, they don’t receive their flowers while they’re still here to smell and enjoy them. Thankfully, that doesn’t seem to be the case for Toni Morrison. Not only is she lauded as one of—if not thee greatest American writer of our time, at 88-years-old, she’s still publishing books, with her latest being The Source of Self-Regard and Mouth Full of Blood, both released in February of this year.

And addition to the content, she’s producing for us. Others, are producing content about her, with her permission. And luckily, this is for us too.

In a new documentary titled, Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, director Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, a longtime friend of Morrison’s details the life and work of the legendary author and first African American woman to win the Nobel Prize.

The documentary features interviews from Hilton Als, Angela Davis, Fren Lebowitz, Walter Mosley, Sonia Sanchez and Oprah Winfrey.

According to Deadline, the film, which is currently playing at film festivals, is set to be released in select theaters on June 21st— and will eventually stream on Hulu.

Magnolia Pictures, the studio behind the project, recently released the trailer for the doc. Take a look at it below.

And see what people who’ve seen and are anticipating seeing the film have had to say on the following pages.
