Christopher Edwards, father of killed children in Atlanta murder-suicide, speaks for 1st time

Christopher Edwards is speaking out for the first time after his ex-wife, Marsha Edwards, committed a murder/suicide that also claimed the life of his two adult children and rocked an affluent Atlanta community.

“The cards and prayers came from all over Georgia, not just Atlanta,” said Edwards chairman of the Atlanta Housing Authority board, on Tuesday, The AJC reports.

All eyes were on Edwards after he was left struggling to understand why his ex-wife Marsha Edwards fatally shot 24-year-old-year-old Christopher Jr. and 20-year-old Erin, before killing herself on Aug. 21.

He said the outpouring of love and cards, “…came in from the nation, and most recently, they have now been coming in from the world. You reached me, and I thank you so very much.”

The Edwards’ were an influential family in the Atlanta social circles. They were well-connected to Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and Christopher even worked as a digital content manager for the Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Film and Entertainment.

His sister Erin was student at Boston University, studying communications and had just completed a summer internship with NBC New York.

Marsha, earlier this year had earned the respect of her peers and was named by Women Works Media Group as Atlanta’s Most Powerful and Influential Women of 2019.

Marsha was also a surgical and medical equipment distributor. She was also an Atlanta socialite and involved in the Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill of America and the Camellia Rose Chapter of The Links.

Last month, police were called to Marsha’s home for a welfare check. There they found the 58-year-old’s body along with the deceased bodies of her children.

While Edwards didn’t allude to knowing what motive caused his ex to kill herself and their kids, he urged people to continue to do good and be of help to those in need.

“There are people in need and, as for my family, what they would say — and what we are going to do — is we continue,” Edwards said. “I would implore you, that all of us get on with the business of helping others. Of providing good service. That is what we are going to do. That is the business at hand today.”

Edwards also said that was the last time he would publicly comment on the matter.

Viola Davis snags new role as L’Oréal Ambassador

Viola Davis is proving that age ain’t nothing but a number.

The 54-year-old actress is flaunting good face as the new L’Oréal ambassador and making her own personal history having snagged her first ever beauty contract.

How’s that for grabbing hold of your dreams! With her box office successes on both the small and large screen including her most recently role of Michelle Obama in a proposed Showtime series, the Academy award winner is also a producer and co-partner in JuVee Productions an award winning artist-driven production company.

In announcing her new L’Oréal campaign, Davis admitted to having had low self-esteem for most of her life and now she hopes to breathe life into others who may not feel confident about their appearance, the Daily Mail reports.

‘I cannot lead with bulls–t’: Viola Davis demands more realistic portrayals of Black women in film

“As someone who is, self-proclaimed, “not a classic beauty”, my ultimate hope is that women out there are inspired by my image.”

Davis opened up about her early years in the entertainment business where she felt the weight of not fitting a certain form of “being pretty.”

“It almost felt like a prerequisite to success,” she said.

“In order to succeed, you had to meet these impossible standards. Now I am much more secure in how I am, but there was a time that I did feel those pressures and succumb to them to a degree,” she admits.

But Davis said she pushed on despite the lag in her career she experienced early on.

“The fact that I didn’t see immediate success in my career in the traditional sense forced me to develop a thick skin, and to rally my sense of self-worth time and time to keep auditioning, getting on stage and honing my craft.”

Still, she said she the rejection contributed to some low points in her life.

“I suffered from low self-esteem all my life, and it still does surface, albeit less frequently,” Davis revealed.

“When I exercise and stay committed to my routine, I really do find that my mental and physical condition is at its best.

“I feel more confident, healthier and clear-headed. It does wonders for my self-esteem as a result,” she added.

Davis, a mother of one, said she’s “humbled” being a global ambassador for the beauty brand.

“I hope to convey that there is beauty to every age.

“Youthfulness is beauty in its most obvious sense, there’s classical beauty, but with age and experience comes confidence – and there is nothing more beautiful to radiate than that,” she said.

Hurricane Dorian Aftermath: Two women lead a mission to save lives and rebuild the Bahamas

Lia Head is on a mission. After the devastation of Hurricane Dorian ravaged her home country last week she sprang into action.

With a network of support staff, she and her fellow organizer Gina Knowles, galvanized donations through their HeadKnowles Foundation which they launched in 2015 in response to the aftermath of category four Hurricane Joaquin. The two determined women were able to bring much-needed help to families in the central and southern Bahamas in the aftermath of Joaquin and are steadfastly trying to do the same after witnessing the catastrophe left by Dorian.

Hurricane Dorian pummeled Abaco and Grand Bahama Islands for two days, with 30 inches of rain, storm surges as high as 23 feet in some areas and 200 mile per hour winds.

The Red Cross says more than 13,000 homes – nearly half the number on those two islands – were damaged or completely destroyed.

Head admits that the aftermath of Dorian is different leaving thousands of people missing, entire neighborhoods destroyed, homes and businesses obliterated, shipping containers and boats hurled inland. Some airports are completely under water.

“This was an apocalyptic event of epic proportion,” Head told theGrio. “Entire swaths of our island have been swallowed by the ocean.”

READ MORE: Hurricane Dorian waves brings in bricks of cocaine at Florida beaches

Kim Mullins, a resident of Grand Bahama Island, told GMA she lived through Hurricane Floyd in 1999, Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne in 2004, Hurricane Wilma in 2005, Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and Hurricane Irma in 2017. In her extensive experience, Hurricane Dorian is the most menacing beast yet.

Setting up a base of operation in Ft. Lauderdale, Head worked tirelessly to direct a group of 12 committed volunteers to marshal resources like food, clothing and supplies to be sent to the Bahamas via a small fleet of planes and boats, even as she received harrowing reports about the fate of her own family.

Head’s sister was forced to move between three shelters and there were reports of a niece and nephew trapped in an attic during the storm’s 30-foot surge while she has also heard that her mother’s home was completely destroyed.

READ MORE: Deadly Hurricane Dorian parks itself over the Bahamas

“We’re the make-it-happen crew,” Head joked. “This is the worst I’ve ever seen and I’ve done a lot of work around the world. I was there day two [after the hurricane hit] in the air over the Abacos to get visuals and pictures.”

Head touched down in Nassau to begin working with World Central Kitchen with José Andrés to feed people who had lost everything.

Shauna Bain Smith is one of the HeadKNowles volunteers who flew from Los Angeles to Florida to help because she understood the scope of the devastation.

“We have 700 islands, but our total population is less than 400,000 souls, and we’re all actually connected through one degree,” Bain Smith told theGrio. “Someone is going to be related to someone who may have perished or lost everything. Islands only have so many resources. We all grew up together.”

And that’s why Head wants people to understand that evacuating the island wasn’t an option for many people and most did what the government told them to do.

READ MORE: Bahamas evacuees, fleeing Dorian’s devastation, forced off ferry headed to Florida

“When you live on an island and you already don’t have many resources, you can not evacuate,” she said. “You can’t purchase a plane ticket. You don’t have access to a boat. You don’t have relatives with means where you can go stay. They didn’t have the option of evacuation. You don’t have the same range of options.”

Now, it’s time for the most heartbreaking work as the water continues to recede and reveal all that has been lost.

Bahamas Health Minister Duane Sands announced on Monday that the official death toll from Dorian had risen to 50. According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, 42 bodies have been found on Abacos. The other eight bodies were found in Grand Bahama.

“The body count is ridiculous,” Head said solemnly. “The water is receding and now we’re seeing bodies. The death toll is far more than is being reported. People are on the ground are seeing the death count.”

Head says victims need food, water and other essentials as well as building materials and gas for the planes and boats that are transporting supplies to the islands.

To help with relief efforts, the HeadKnowles Foundation has set up an Amazon Wish List and a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for families and to support the rebuilding efforts.

Regina King’s Son Speaks on His Bond With His Mother: “She’s a Supermom”

Throughout her career, Regina King has earned the respect of many, including her 23-year-old son, Ian Alexander, Jr.

While attending the Golden Globe Awards this year, Ian admitted that his mother is deserving of the world. In addition to that, Ian revealed that he appreciates the time he gets to spend with his mother while working around her busy schedule.

“She’s just a super mom, really,” he told E! News correspondent Ryan Seacrest on the Golden Globes’ red carpet. “She doesn’t really let bad workdays or anything come back and ruin the time that we have, so it’s really awesome to have a mother that…I can enjoy spending time with and all that.”

Elsewhere during the red carpet conversation, Ian spoke on the importance of the Time’s Up! movement and fighting for equality amongst men and women of today. “Time’s up. Just for women having equality and safety in the workplace, and all individuals,” Ian added. “So, that’s really important to me, especially having a powerful woman…they rule the world.”

Back in 2011, Regina spoke with Essence regarding her adoration for her son. During their conversation, the If Beale Street Could Talk actress said that becoming a mother taught her the meaning of unconditional love. “I get emotional because my son is an amazing young man, and it took me to be a mother for me to realize how incredible of a woman she (my mother) is,” she said.

Regina continued, “You don’t know what unconditional love is. You may say you do, but if you don’t have a child, you don’t know what that is. But when you experience it, it is the most fulfilling ever. So, that is the greatest part about me. Being a mom to Ian.”

In other Regina King-related news, the 48-year-old actress won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk.

America vows to ‘never forget’ 9/11, 18 years later

Americans commemorated 9/11 with solemn ceremonies and vows Wednesday to “never forget” 18 years after the deadliest terror attacks on American soil.

A crowd of victims’ relatives assembled at ground zero, where the observance began Wednesday with a moment of silence and tolling bells at 8:46 a.m. — the moment when a hijacked plane slammed into the World Trade Center’s north tower.

“As long as the city will gift us this moment, I will be here,” Margie Miller said at the ground zero ceremony, which she attends every year. She lost her husband, Joel.

“Because I feel like if we don’t come, they don’t need to do it. And I want people to remember,” said Miller, of Baldwin, on Long Island. After so many years of anniversaries, she has come to know other victims’ relatives, and to appreciate being with them.

“There’s smiles in between the tears that say we didn’t do this journey on our own. That we were here for each other. And that’s the piece that I think we get from being here,” she said.

President Donald Trump was expected to join an observance at the Pentagon. Vice President Mike Pence was scheduled to speak at the third attack site, near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Former President George W. Bush, the commander-in-chief at the time of the 2001 attacks, was due at an afternoon wreath-laying at the Pentagon.

The nation is still grappling with the aftermath of 9/11 at ground zero, in Congress and beyond. The attacks’ aftermath is visible from airport security checkpoints to Afghanistan. A rocket exploded at the U.S. embassy as the anniversary began in Afghanistan, where a post-9/11 invasion has become America’s longest war.

The anniversary ceremonies center on remembering the nearly 3,000 people killed when hijacked planes rammed into the trade center, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville on Sept. 11, 2001. All those victims’ names are read aloud at the ground zero ceremony.
But there has been growing awareness in recent years of the suffering of another group of people tied to the tragedy: firefighters, police and others who died or fell ill after exposure to the wreckage and the toxins unleashed in it.

While research continues into whether those illnesses are tied to 9/11 toxins, a victims compensation fund for people with potentially Sept. 11-related health problems has awarded more than $5.5 billion so far. Over 51,000 people have applied.

After years of legislative gridlock, dwindling money in the fund and fervent activism by ailing first responders and their advocates, Congress this summer made sure the fund won’t run dry . Trump, a Republican and a New Yorker who was in the city on 9/11, signed the measure in July.

The sick gained new recognition this year at the memorial plaza at ground zero, where the new 9/11 Memorial Glade was dedicated this spring.

The tribute features six large stacks of granite inlaid with salvaged trade center steel, with a dedication “to those whose actions in our time of need led to their injury, sickness, and death.” No one is named specifically.

Some 9/11 memorials elsewhere already included sickened rescue, recovery and cleanup workers, and there is a remembrance wall entirely focused on them in Nesconset, on Long Island. But those who fell ill or were injured, and their families, say having a tribute at ground zero carries special significance.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon announced Monday that its 9/11 memorial will close next week for electrical and lighting work. The project, expected to take until late May, includes repairs to lighting glitches in the shallow reflecting pools under the memorial benches.
Sept. 11 is known not only as a day for remembrance and patriotism, but also as a day of service. People around the country continue to volunteer at food banks, schools, home-building projects, park cleanups and other charitable endeavors on and near the anniversary.

NFL star Antonio Brown accused of rape by former trainer

Newly minted New England Patriots’ player Antonio Brown is after his former trainer accused the star wide receiver of rape.

Tick, tock: OBJ plans to keep wearing lavish watch in games

In an explosive report that unfolded on Tuesday in The New York Times a woman identified as Britney Taylor filed a federal lawsuit alleging that several sexual assault incidents involving Brown took place between June 2017 and May 2018.

According to the lawsuit, Taylor outlined at least three separate occasions where she said Brown assaulted and raped her.

Taylor reportedly met Brown during her tenure as a student at Central Michigan, where they both attended. When she graduated, she claims Brown hired her to be his personal trainer.

Taylor, a gymnast, alleged that Brown sexually assault her during a June 2017 training session. She said he kissed her without consent and then exposed himself. Also, during the same month, Taylor claims Brown allegedly masturbated behind her and then ejaculated on her back, according to the outlet.

Then on May 20, 2018, Taylor alleges that Brown raped her by forcing her onto a bed and pushing her face into a mattress.

Brown’s attorney Darren Heitner released a statement saying that allegations are false and Brown denies “each and every allegation.”

“He will pursue all legal remedies to not only clear his name, but to also protect other professional athletes against false accusations,” Heitner said.

Crown also claimed that the relationship between him and Taylor was “consensual.”

Heitner also said Taylor wanted Brown to invest $1.6 million dollars into a business and when he refused, the working relationship went south.

The shocking news came out just hours after Brown signed a $15 million contract with the Patriots, coupled with a $9 million signing bonus.

Jury awards $11.4M in racial bias case against Michigan for ‘mammy’ slurs

While Brown has not yet been criminally charged, the Patriots team released the following statement, according to Masslive:

We are aware of the civil lawsuit that was filed earlier today against Antonio Brown, as well as the response by Antonio’s representatives. We take these allegations very seriously. Under no circumstance does this organization condone sexual violence or assault. The league has informed us that they will be investigating. We will have no further comment while that investigation takes place.”

Taylor is seeking unspecified damages.

FASHION WEEK: Big Sean, Halsey, Migos rock Rihanna’s lingerie show

Big Sean, A$ap Ferg, Halsey and Migos rocked Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty crowd Tuesday from a color-saturated stage at the Barclays Center as Normani and Laverne Cox joined an army of supermodels and dancers in a showcase of her latest loungewear and lingerie.

But don’t look for her juicy new collection on social media, in a big way at least. The curated audience heavy on young influencers had their phones locked in cases for the New York Fashion Week show that was filmed for streaming Sept. 20 exclusively on Amazon Prime in more than 200 countries and territories.

Rule-breakers spent the rest of the evening posting blurry and dimly lit clips taken with sneaked-in phones.

Rihanna did right by her fans by putting her latest teddies and other lacy pieces immediately on sale at Amazon, and by setting up photo booths for her audience’s pleasure outside the Brooklyn stadium after the 40-minute show.

On stage, her white multilevel backdrop evoked a small city bathed in purple, yellow and red light. Her legion strutted and danced on platforms and in large windows as she dressed some of the biggest names in modeling, sisters Bella and Gigi Hadid included, harem style in looks of pink and yellow. She also enlisted 21 Savage as a model and Fat Joe and Tierra Whack to perform.

At one point during the show, a small simulated water pool center stage rippled as Migos moved. At another, the crowd threw up their arms as DJ Khaled instructed.

Plus-size model Paloma Elsesser joined the Hadids, Joan Small, Alek Wek and Cara Delevingne for Rihanna’s second fashion week foray of the fledgling brand, this collection for fall-winter. Like her models and dancers, her line ranges in sizes 32A-42H in bras and XS-3X for the rest of the body.

Among Rihanna’s guests were Kacey Musgraves, Kehlani, the pregnant Ashley Graham and Diplo. They joined others for photos ahead of the performance.
Nobody does fashion week quite like Rihanna.

Jury awards $11.4M in racial bias case against Michigan for ‘mammy’ slurs

A jury has awarded $11.4 million to a black couple who filed a discrimination lawsuit against the Michigan Department of Corrections.

Attorney Jon Marko says Lisa Griffey was a probation officer who was racially harassed by white co-workers. She says they called her “mammy” and the “black one.”

Marko says her husband, Cedric Griffey, who was a deputy prison warden, was retaliated against because of his wife’s legal challenge. A Genesee County jury found Lisa Griffey was subjected to a hostile work environment and suffered an adverse employment action because of her race.

The jury on Monday said Cedric Griffey also suffered. The trial lasted six weeks.
The attorney general’s office, which defended the Corrections Department at trial, says an appeal is likely.
