Investors Buying Entire Blocks in Houston to Revitalize and Bring in Black-Owned Businesses

black_investors_buying_blocks_houston_to_build_black-owned_businesses

Real estate developer Chris Senegal and broker Jay Bradley are teaming up to buy several blocks to renovate and revitalize in Houston. Together with Cocoa Collective Xchange, they are helping bring back Black-owned businesses into the Fifth Ward community through a Buying the Block campaign.

The project was started by buying abandoned properties and turning them into new construction homes. It has, so far, attracted a number of young Black professionals to be homeowners as well. New homes for families who have lived in the Fifth Ward for decades will also be built in some of the redeveloped blocks.

More than that, the main purpose of the Buying the Block campaign is to attract more investors into the community in order to fund long-term rentals for businesses such as restaurants, coffee shops, and office space. The campaign has raised more than $720,000 from over 1,100 investors.

“I have enough to complete the project,” Senegal told Chron. “Additional investor funds will be used to acquire adjacent properties to expand the scope of the project.”

For Senegal, the project has been beneficial to alleviate the damage caused by flipping houses. Bradley, who owns the Equinox Realty Group, shares the same sentiments, believing better opportunities come with having strong ties within the community.

“You create opportunities to have something better in the community,” Bradley said. “At this point, it’s really about helping people who are trying to do good things with the community.”

Hamilton’s Daveed Diggs asks what 4th of July means to Black people

Actor Daveed Diggs is calling on Black Americans to examine the meaning of Independence Day as we celebrate the 4th of July holiday.

“What to my people is the Fourth of July?” the Hamilton star asks in a video that depicts historical images of slaves compared with visuals of some of the violence that has erupted at nationwide protests over police brutality and racial injustice.

Inspired by Fredrick Douglass’ 1852 speech What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?, Diggs recites in the clip “My people who are failed every day by every country … terrorized by fire … we have cried salt baths for our kids.”

The Oakland-born artist and activist hit up CBS This Morning to discuss the video and Douglass’ powerful message. He told host Gayle King the speech captures “the desire to hold America accountable.”

Watch his 4th of July message via the clip below.

During his conversation with King, Diggs recalled his emotions the first time he read Douglass’ words.

“I had the opportunity to play Frederick Douglass for an upcoming piece for Showtime called The Good Lord Bird, and as part of that performance, I performed excerpts from the Fourth of July — from his “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” speech,” he explained.

“And so I remember the first time I read that speech and how poignant and how contemporary, really, a lot of the points still felt 170 years later… modernizing it, I jumped at the opportunity. And what they came up with was brilliant,” Diggs continued.

He went on to note that the message “manages to capture a lot of the feeling of the moment and a lot of the desire to hold America accountable, and to keep those kind of discussions going beyond just the moment that we’re in.”

Diggs then recalled his own experiences with law enforcement, and one specific encounter before he moved to Los Angeles to perform in Hamilton.

“I got snatched off of my bicycle by police officers and thrown up against a fence because I fit a description,” he said

He previously told The Guardian that his Jewish mother and Black father warned him early on that police would treat him differently than many of his peers.

“Between the ages of 22 and 25, I got pulled over maybe almost 40-something times, never got a ticket,” he shared with King.

Diggs believes the Black Lives Matter movement and anti-police brutality demonstrators are in response to a system “that is trained to treat Black life differently.”

Donald Trump Jr.’s girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle tests positive for COVID-19

Kimberly Guilfoyle, the girlfriend of Donald Trump Jr. and a top official for President Donald Trump‘s campaign, has reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.

Guilfoyle, who is a former Fox News host and attorney, tested positive on Friday before a Fourth of July campaign event at Mount Rushmore, the New York Times reported. She was routinely tested as a member of Trump’s inner circle, and reportedly had no symptoms of the virus.

READ MORE: Trump’s personal valet tests positive for COVID-19

Guilfoyle and Trump Jr. had traveled to South Dakota for the campaign event, however, they are expected to return to the east coast given Guilfoyle’s health status. They reportedly did not travel on Air Force One.

This new revelation is the third time a person in Trump’s orbit tested positive for the novel coronavirus, even as the president continues to give mixed signals on the seriousness of the virus in the United States and how the country should respond to its crippling grip on the country’s public health and economy.

READ MORE: Trump hits the golf course as US reopens, coronavirus cases death toll surpasses 100,000

Previously, Trump’s personal valet tested positive for COVID-19, as did the press secretary for Vice President Mike Pence.

Guilfoyle is pretty close to the Trump family, in fact, according to the Times, staff aides consider her a part of the family. Last month, she attended President Trump’s indoor rally in Tulsa, Okla.

Just yesterday, former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain was hospitalized due to the virus. Cain had also attended the Tulsa rally and was not wearing a mask or face covering, based on photographs of him at the event.

Despite several states seeing alarming spikes of COVID-19 across the country, the Trump administration and Republican leaders have seemingly downplayed the virus threat to American lives.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country’s top infectious disease expert, warned that the United States is “not in total control” of the coronavirus pandemic and predicts the nation could eventually see 100,000 new COVID-19 cases a day.

Tina Lawson defends daughter Beyoncé against ‘appropriation’ claims

Beyonce’s mother Tina Lawson had to get the haters right together this week over their criticism of Queen Bey’s new ‘Black Is King’ visual album.

The project, released July 31 on the Disney+ streaming service, is based on the songs from the 2019 album, “The Lion King.” As reported by Variety, Bey’s latest work was announced in a joint statement from Disney and her Parkwood Entertainment production company.

Black Is King is a celebratory memoir for the world on the Black experience,” the joint statement reads. The visuals will follow a new narrative based on a young king’s “transcendent journey through betrayal, love and self-identity.”

Immediately after the trailer dropped earlier this week, the singer was accused of “appropriating” African culture, even though the visual album is a celebration of the motherland, That Grape Juice reports.

The singer’s mother responded to the nonsensical chatter on Instagram, calling out folks for criticizing the film “before they even see it,” she wrote in a post on her official IG account.

Ms. Tina also acknowledged some of the amazing African contributors on ‘Black Is King,’ while praising her daughter’s passion, dedication and unwavering work ethic.

She makes less with her Afrocentric content. 2. She's actually taken the time studied African costumes and such and didn't just throw this together. Lawson noted that Beyonce made time to study African costumes and she specifically worked with African dancers, filmmakers and directors on this project.

She rejected accusations that Bey’s love of the culture is nothing more than a “façade” and that it’s really all about the money.

When one fan pointed out that Beyonce’s “Lemonade” (considered her “Black” album) is one of her lowest selling offerings, Lawson co-signed the message.

“It’s really sad that the women who shout the loudest the “protect the black woman” that they are the ones that are trying to tear her down” she wrote in the caption of the post.

“Sisters wake up!!!! Beyonce was taught from a little girl to lift other women up not to tear them down,” she added.

@_alphaa_ (Twitter handle) you could not have said it better. It’s really sad that the women who shout the loudest “protect the black woman” that they are the ones that are trying to tear her down. Sisters wake up!!!! Beyonce was taught from a little girl to lift other women up not to tear them down. She minds her own business , does not criticize anyone, Gives of her time and money , and dedicates her art to Boldly show the Royalty and beauty of our heritage and journey ! Her work is to change the narrative! To show that we did not start off as slaves , but that we were kings and queens before we were forced into slavery . Don’t you want to see something that shows that ! Aren’t you sick and tired Of seeing us as slaves ! She employs African and African-American people , fights for many “first” in the fashion and film world . Take an inventory of yourself and your hate . Where is it coming from ? I ask you to examine your heart and really take a look at what your motive is and what it’s fueled by! Then take that energy critiquing, and tearing down and put it to into an action that is fighting against the systemic racism that is going on right now and has been going on forever . The time that you take to tear her down you could be using that time to do that!! Critique and tear down the systems that hurt and suppress us. Use your social media platform to work on getting people out to vote to change the laws critique the frigging laws!! Stop being a social media terrorist to the wrong people ! Redirect that passion for change in that !!! Use your energy and great intelligence to fight people who choose to be oppressors. Beyonce is not your enemy!! But you would swear that she was! I love what this post said which is the honest to God truth. She sold more records before lemonade. I have one question for you too that I’m confused about “how do you appropriate the black culture when you are black?? “She has a right to her heritage as well as anyone else in the world. Just consider young sisters i love you🙏🏾🙏🏾❤❤ and brothers thankyou for your balance and speaking up. 🙏🏾❤

Lawson went on to admit that she finds it “strange” how “people whine about her not touring in Africa yet beg for more African representation in entertainment but are mad that they’re getting it from one the world’s greatest stars.”

She said her daughter’s so-called fans would “rather have B come and they spend their money for a show once or twice every few years rather than have someone of African descent work with African creatives to create art that celebrates them that will last forever and it be done at no cost to them,” Lawson wrote.

She went on to urge the trolls to “sop being a social media terrorist to the wrong people.”

“Redirect that passion,” Lawson added. “Use your energy and great intelligence to fight people who choose to be oppressors.”

Kellyanne Conway’s anti-Trump teen daughter claims she’s being silenced

White House adviser Kellyanne Conway had an awkward moment on TikTok with her teen daughter over freedom of speech.

Claudia Conway, 15, made headlines this week after she shared her political views with the world through a series of TikTok videos, Complex reports.

While her mother is very much pro-Trump, and her father is anti-Trump conservative, George Conway, the high schooler is a liberal activist and supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement.

The Conways, understandably, are not pleased with the media attention that their teen daughter is getting over her stance on certain social issues. The minor and her mother recently sparred on TikTok, with Kellyanne demanding that she end the stream but Claudia refuses.

READ MORE: Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley tells Kellyanne Conway ‘Keep my name out of your lying mouth’ for a very good reason

“You’re literally not letting me use my freedom of speech,” she tells her mom, who appears to keep calm as she insists Claudia “shut it all down,” because “not everyone’s following is well-meaning.”

Watch the moment go down via the YouTube clip below:

George, meanwhile, has demanded all journalists cease communication with the minor.

Taking to Twitter on Friday (July 3), he wrote, “ “To journalists:  @kellyannepolls and I do *not* consent to any communications between you and any of our minor children, including our daughter Claudia.  So desist.”

The teen claims her parents are trying to silence her by shutting off her phone and pressuring her to delete her social media accounts.

“Please stop supporting my dad because he’s trying to take down my social media accounts too,” she said during the live stream with her famous mother.

Claudia claims she has “been bullied and badgered her entire life because of her parents,” so she’s now using her platform to speak her truth.

“I grew up in a very, very conservative family, so I was only exposed to those views for a very long time. I decided to educate myself and think for myself,” Claudia told Insider

“I’m still a kid, of course. I took the time to educate myself and took the time to branch out and be exposed to other sides and other biases and whatnot. We do get into arguments a lot — I’m not going to lie.”

Facebook employee files complaint: ‘We have a Black people problem’

A Black man, Oscar Veneszee, Jr. has filed an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaint against social media giant, Facebook.

In the complaint, Veneszee says that the social network does not give Black workers equal opportunities in their careers.

In an interview with NPR, Veneszee said that “We have a Black people problem.”

The man, who has worked for the company since 2017, says that Facebook “set goals to increase diversity at the company, but we’ve failed to create a culture at the company that finds, grows and keeps Black people at the company.”

Veneszee, a Navy veteran, was hired to recruit other veterans and people of color to the company. Also listed in the complaint is Howard Winns, Jr. and Jazsmin Smith, who were both recruited by Veneszee, but not hired by the company.

Winns and Smith allege that they were not hired because they are Black.

According to the complaint, Veneszee states that while he is regularly praised by his supervisor, he has not been given opportunities to be promoted within the organization.

That lack of promotion has cost him the opportunity to earn “tens of thousands of dollars more” in salary as well as a higher bonus and more stock options, he claims.

In a statement, Facebook responded saying, “We believe it is essential to provide all employees with a respectful and safe working environment. We take any allegations of discrimination seriously and investigate every case.”

The complaint is not the first allegation of racial bias at Facebook. In November of 2019, a group of Black employees at the company wrote an anonymous Medium post that alleged that “Facebook empowers racism against its employees of color.”

The post read, “We may be smiling.” It said of their outward social media presence, but, it continued, “On the inside, we are sad. Angry. Oppressed. Depressed. And treated every day through the micro and macro aggressions as if we do not belong here.”

Alabama Students Throwing ‘COVID Parties’ as a Contest to See Who Gets Coronavrius

COVID-19 Parties

There have been reports that there are students in Tuscaloosa, Alabama who are attending parties featuring known students who have been recently diagnosed with the coronavirus, staging contests to see who can also catch the virus, a city council member told ABC News earlier this week.

As rumors of these parties started to spread, Tuscaloosa City Councilor Sonya McKinstry informed the city council that these students have been organizing “COVID parties” to intentionally infect each other with the coronavirus.

“They put money in a pot and they try to get COVID. Whoever gets COVID first gets the pot. It makes no sense,” McKinstry said. “They’re intentionally doing it.”

Tuscaloosa Fire Chief Randy Smith also spoke of the parties to the City Council earlier this week as he has also confirmed the behavior of the students. Smith spoke to council members and said that there have been parties held throughout the city and surrounding Tuscaloosa County, “where students, or kids, would come in with known positive.”

“We thought that was kind of a rumor at first,” Smith told the council members. “We did some research. Not only do the doctors’ offices confirm it but the state confirmed they also had the same information.”

Tuscaloosa, which is the seventh-largest city in Alabama, is also home to The University of Alabama and several other colleges.

“We’re trying to break up any parties that we know of,” McKinstry told ABC News. “It’s nonsense. But I think when you’re dealing with the mind frame of people who are intentionally doing stuff like that and they’re spreading it intentionally, how can you truly fight something that people are constantly trying to promote?”

Arrol Sheehan, the spokesperson for the Alabama Department of Public Health, said the state’s “Safer at Home Order” states that people who test positive “shall be quarantined to their place of residence for a period of 14 days.”

Sheehan said that the violation of the heath order is a misdemeanor and fines for each violation can be up to $500.

“Suspected violations of the home quarantine order should be reported to law enforcement and the local health department,” she said in a statement to ABC News.

“It’s unfortunate, but the hope is that they’ll be a big part of [GMA 3] down the road,” an insider told Page Six. “Everyone was feeling good about their show. It was nominated for three Daytime Emmys. It finally found its rhythm. Ratings were stabilized and were starting to tick up when they went off-air.”

Florida coronavirus cases hit 10,000 in a day, sets new record

COVID-19 continues to surge in Florida. The Sunshine State has set a new daily record for new positive coronavirus cases on Thursday with 10,109.

The state has nearly 170,000 positive cases with over 3600 deaths. 67 people died from the virus on Thursday.

READ MORE: Florida governor accused of undercounting COVID-19 cases

Gov. Ron DeSantis met with Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday and speaking to reporters afterward, Pence praised the governor. “It’s not an either or choice,” Pence said. “The economic comeback that’s underway is a demonstration that we don’t have to choose between opening America and the health of our people. We can do both.”

According to The Tampa Bay Times, Pence said, “We really do believe that because we’re in such a better place today … the people of Florida can rest easy.”

Florida was among the earliest states to begin reopening after the nationwide lockdown due to the pandemic was declared. The state rolled out phase one of its plan in late April. Since then, the virus has continued to surge across the state.

In speaking to reporters, DeSantis has said that he thinks Floridians “became complacent,” after the virus was no longer the top story in the news. However, Democrats believe that DeSantis should have shut the state down sooner and should have stayed shut longer.

“We needed at the beginning to hit this virus with a hammer, to starve it all the way down,” Democratic U.S. Rep Donna Shalala told NPR. “We didn’t do the right thing in the beginning, and now we’re trying to play catch-up.”

This ‘CEO Chick’ Who’s Weathered Tough Times Has the Antidote for Women Entrepreneurs: Motivation, Money & Master Classes

Coleen Otero women entrepreneurs

Coleen Otero knows what it’s like to walk through the storm as an entrepreneur and come out on the other side. The founder of CEO Chick, a network of diverse women entrepreneurs, Otero is also a beauty expert and the author of Brand to Bucks: A No-Nonsense Guide to Building a Six Figure Brand.

Otero started her entrepreneurial journey as a hair stylist, getting her license right out of high school and eventually having her own salon.

“And then the market crash hit. I thought, man what am I going to do now that I’m no longer behind the chair in this particular brick and mortar space?”

After the Great Recession, Otero lost almost everything—her salon, her car, her home. “It was sort of like a rebirthing, honestly,” she says. “That journey was one of the toughest things that I ever had to face.”

Otero sees the parallels between the rough time she went through and the challenges so many women entrepreneurs are facing right now as the country grapples with the coronavirus pandemic and the fight for racial justice.

“We’re seeing so much loss around us. It puts you in a place where things that you relied on are no longer available, people you relied on are no longer available,” she says. But the upside is that it “really allows you to see what defines you—who are you, what you really need. Things I thought I needed, I didn’t.”

And, she says, it forces you to discover what you’re made of: “None of us have ever seen anything like this. It’s going to rock you to your core, and you’re going to realize, either I’ve got some work to do but I’m able, I’m equipped to walk through this season. Or you’re going to find out, man I really don’t have the faith I thought I had. I really ain’t the boss like I thought I was.”

Now she looks back on losing her salon and says, “The day we closed, I tell people that was the best day of my life.”

Otero’s comeback started with the internet. She was able to connect with potential customers in new ways, eventually become a stylist who traveled with clients or worked on projects such as photo shoots or book covers.

“Social media really changed the way we did business,” she says. “It allowed my business to grow further after the salon closed.”

Social media also gave her her tribe. In 2012, she started a Facebook group to foster the kinds of conversations she was interested in having with fellow women entrepreneurs.

“One of my favorite scriptures is ‘My people perish for a lack of knowledge,'” Otero says. “I don’t have all the answers but I’m one that will continue to knock.”

In 2015 that group turned into CEO Chick, which now offers online courses, live events, and group coaching to its community of 1,000 women entrepreneurs.

This month, Otero is expanding that virtual education beyond the network with a Master Class Mondays series that is affordable—$20—and open to the public. Topics will include how to secure funds for your business, how to use technology to scale, and how to become a household brand name, with experts such as Amazon Web Services’ Jillian Blackwell and Sassy Jones Boutique CEO Charis Jones.

Otero chose the format to “bring different industry leaders to share the information that these women need to be successful in business, because you can’t get that on social media alone. You get a lot of hype and not ‘how-to.'”

“We want to make sure that they are running not just brands that are popular online and cute online,” she says. “They need the depth, they need cash flow. They need to understand investing, they need to understand diversifying. They need to understand how to work on their business, not just in it. Running a business, it’s not just Instagram.”

CEO Chick will also have a giveaway every week this month for Black women entrepreneurs, worth $5,000 in products and services, including $500 cash.

Even though the CEO Chick network is diverse, the giveaway is targeting Black women specifically because, as Otero says, “we are still, unfortunately, not bringing in the revenue that we need to. Black women in business lead in being the last to lead. We’ve got to do something about that.”

“The ultimate goal is that we help women stay in business,” through these challenging times, Otero says. “It’s possible. It’s doable. You can take your brand and your business to another level online and see the financial rewards. Don’t give up.”

Tamron Hall denies firing 20 employees, shares email sent to staff

Talk show host, Tamron Hall, posted a video on Instagram where she denied that she “fired” 20 employees.

Hall says that the story that she “did not pay 20 people, and fired them, and left them hanging is a lie.”

READ MORE: Tamron Hall shuffles staff, hires former ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ producers for daytime show

She says that season one of the show was supposed to wrap on June 5, but that she fought to have it extended until June 25. “I fought to have the extension of the season to June 25.” Hall said that her “creative team was paid through the pandemic and through that extension because I wanted to keep pushing and keep putting out stories that matter to you.”

Hall says that “Like any other show, like any other product, people make changes and we did after the season had wrapped. Not during, not while. So this notion that I ran off securing bags, it’s not true. It is absolutely not and the notion that I’ve abandoned people, it’s not.”

She states that there have been changes made to make the show better. “I have a right, and every person who runs a company, owns a company, has anything that is yours, you have a right to make it better.”

The criticism came from a Daily Mail article that reported that “Around 20 people lost their jobs yesterday at The Tamron Hall Show. It was a giant blood bath,” production sources allegedly told the media outlet. “[Tamron] is living her best life on her personal Instagram while people are losing their livelihoods.”

The Tamron Hall Show debuted in late 2019 on ABC. Midway through its first season, the coronavirus pandemic struck the nation, and the show moved into remote production.

Hall also shared a letter that she wrote to her employees at the height of the pandemic where she responded to an anonymous email that circulated throughout her staff.

Hall said that she understood the frustration of her staff moving to a work from home phase, “everyone is stressed out and feeling anxious but to say the ‘confusion on the show has run more rampant than the coronavirus’ was a gut punch that I could not ignore.” Hall wrote that “the success of this show will never erase my humanity.”

The Tamron Hall Show was renewed for a second season in December of 2019.

Harris, Warren lead in polls on who voters want as Biden’s VP

Several polls are indicating that Democratic voters think Senator Kamala Harris or Senator Elizabeth Warren would be the best picks for a running mate for Joe Biden.

At the top of June, Yahoo News/YouGov chose Warren over Harris by at least 30%. The most recent Today/YouGov poll has it flipped, picking Harris over Warren for the last two weeks by a few percentage points. A Monmouth University poll, comprised of older, New England voters, chose Harris by 28%.

Former Georgia Gubernatorial candidate, Stacey Abrams continues to be popular with poll respondents as well. She came in third in several polls.

A USA Today poll found that 70% of voters think it’s “very important” that Biden choose a woman of color as a running mate. “It definitely needs to be a woman of color to be representative of what’s happening right now,” said Dawn Newman, 56, a Democrat from Minnesota told USA Today. She said either Harris or Abrams would be a “strong, effective” choice.“

According to the poll, nominating a woman of color was more important to white Americans than Black Americans. Seventy-five percent of white Americans said it was very or somewhat important to them. It was very or somewhat important to 60% of Black voters, and 81% of Hispanics.

The poll found that Sen. Harris generated the most excitement among the 345 Democratic respondents. She was followed by Abrams, and then Warren. The name recognition that Harris carries may be a big part of the enthusiasm that voters have for her.

Historically, the vice-presidential choice hasn’t been as important of a choice as one would think. A 2016 article by Politico suggests that “in order for a running mate to help a candidate on a national scale, he or she must be exceedingly popular,” or exceedingly unpopular to truly hurt a campaign.

However, given Joe Biden’s advanced age, he will turn 78 two weeks after the election, the vice-presidential choice in this race is facing extensive scrutiny.
