Free online book - Machine Learning from Scratch

Hi all,

I'm writing to share a book I just published that I think many of you might find interesting or useful.

The book is called "Machine Learning from Scratch." It provides complete derivations of the most common algorithms in ML (OLS, logistic regression, naive Bayes, trees, boosting, neural nets, etc.) both in theory and math. It also demonstrates constructions of each of these methods from scratch in Python using only numpy.

My aim with the book is to provide a very thorough rundown of the fitting process behind the algorithms we see every day. I hope that seeing the models derived in math or constructed in code helps readers understand the models at a deeper level and feel more comfortable optimizing them for their own work.

Any comments or questions would be very much appreciated either on this post, on the book's github, or to me directly at dafrdman@gmail.com.

The book is available here

What this Book Covers

This book covers the building blocks of the most common methods in machine learning. This set of methods is like a toolbox for machine learning engineers. Those entering the field of machine learning should feel comfortable with this toolbox so they have the right tool for a variety of tasks. Each chapter in this book corresponds to a single machine learning method or group of methods. In other words, each chapter focuses on a single tool within the ML toolbox.

In my experience, the best way to become comfortable with these methods is to see them derived from scratch, both in theory and in code. The purpose of this book is to provide those derivations. Each chapter is broken into three sections. The concept sections introduce the methods conceptually and derive their results mathematically. The construction sections show how to construct the methods from scratch using Python. The implementation sections demonstrate how to apply the methods using packages in Python like scikit-learn, statsmodels, and tensorflow.

Why this Book

There are many great books on machine learning written by more knowledgeable authors and covering a broader range of topics. In particular, I would suggest An Introduction to Statistical Learning, Elements of Statistical Learning, and Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning, all of which are available online for free.

While those books provide a conceptual overview of machine learning and the theory behind its methods, this book focuses on the bare bones of machine learning algorithms. Its main purpose is to provide readers with the ability to construct these algorithms independently. Continuing the toolbox analogy, this book is intended as a user guide: it is not designed to teach users broad practices of the field but rather how each tool works at a micro level.

Who this Book is for

This book is for readers looking to learn new machine learning algorithms or understand algorithms at a deeper level. Specifically, it is intended for readers interested in seeing machine learning algorithms derived from start to finish. Seeing these derivations might help a reader previously unfamiliar with common algorithms understand how they work intuitively. Or, seeing these derivations might help a reader experienced in modeling understand how different algorithms create the models they do and the advantages and disadvantages of each one.

This book will be most helpful for those with practice in basic modeling. It does not review best practices—such as feature engineering or balancing response variables—or discuss in depth when certain models are more appropriate than others. Instead, it focuses on the elements of those models.

What Readers Should Know

The concept sections of this book primarily require knowledge of calculus, though some require an understanding of probability (think maximum likelihood and Bayes’ Rule) and basic linear algebra (think matrix operations and dot products). The appendix reviews the math and probability needed to understand this book. The concept sections also reference a few common machine learning methods, which are introduced in the appendix as well. The concept sections do not require any knowledge of programming.

The construction and code sections of this book use some basic Python. The construction sections require understanding of the corresponding content sections and familiarity creating functions and classes in Python. The code sections require neither.

Method Man and Michael Rainey, Jr. Open Up About Starring in ‘Power Book: Ghost II’ (Video)

Method Man and Michael Rainey Jr

After six thrilling seasons and a gut-wrenching series finale in February, the groundbreaking Power series will premiere its offshoot Power Book II: Ghost on Sunday, Sept. 6. Not only does this mark a new era in the television franchise, but it also marks the first of four spinoff series that were greenlighted by Starz following the blockbuster success of the original Power.

The crime drama created by Courtney A. Kemp and executive produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson averaged 10 million viewers per episode in multiplatform viewing in its final two seasons, reports Variety. In comparison, the show averaged 4.7 million viewers per episode in its first season. It’s also the no. 1 series in premium cable for Black viewers and, according to Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch, the highest generator of subscriptions and retention for Starz on both linear and digital platforms. “It is definitely a huge driver of our business,” he told Variety. “Power and the Power universe is probably the most important franchise to the company. It’s one of the key foundations of our programming strategy, and it’s given us a lot of data on how to put other shows around it on the network.”

Thus, it’s no wonder why the Power universe is rapidly expanding — the series makes sense (and dollars) for its network.

Power Book II

Michael Rainey Jr.

Power Book II: Ghost welcomes a handful of members from the original cast, including Naturi Naughton as Tasha St. Patrick and Michael Rainey Jr. as Tariq St. Patrick. The new series finds Tariq trying to balance his life as a college student attending a prestigious university while engaging in illegal activity to generate income. The series picks up where the original left off: days after Tariq fatally shot his father James St. Patrick. Although he pulled the trigger, his mother Tasha was charged with the murder.

In an interview with BLACK ENTERPRISE, Rainey opened up about taking on the leading role in Power Book.

“Honestly, I was a little bit nervous at first, but within the first week of filming, like all that was gone,” said the 19-year-old New York native. “The crew and the cast made it super easy for me to get like used to being no. 1 on the call sheet and really like having all the responsibility on me.”

Rainey added that although Jackson gives him career advice often, when it came to his starring role, he says there’s one piece of advice that stands out the most: “one thing you can never do is feel too entitled to something because that’s when you deprive yourself.”

Expanding the Franchise

Power Book II: Ghost
Cliff “Method Man” Smith” on the set of “Power Book II: Ghost”

The spinoff will introduce Power fans to new characters like Cliff “Method Man” Smith, who plays a high powered, high-priced defense attorney, and Mary J. Blige, who plays the matriarch of a vicious crime family. Smith told BE that he enjoyed portraying a Black lawyer on screen.

“He’s an attorney. I ain’t got to stick my gun in anybody’s face,” he joked.

“In the times that we’re in now, it’s great to see someone that looks like me — not literally — but you know, that looks like me that can put on that suit and do that job. It’s feasible. It’s like this can actually happen. And that’s the beauty of a show like Power where people tune in not just because it’s a great show — don’t get me wrong — but they tune in because they see people who look just like them,” he added. “The diversity is definitely there.”

Mary J. Blige Starz

Smith, who collaborated with Blige on the 1995 Grammy-winning hip hop love song “You’ll All I Need,” added that he enjoyed working with the “Queen of Hip Hop Soul” on this project.

“Mary is the OG of OG’s. Larger than life persona,” he said of the singer. “When she walks in the room, you feel her. But then when you actually speak to Mary, the humility is there. She’s humble. It’s like, yeah, this Auntie Mary right here.”

Power Book II: Ghost debuts Sept. 6 at 9/8c on Starz. The following week, the Power sequel moves to its regular time slot at 8/7c.

Rapper Silento arrested after walking into stranger’s home with hatchet

One of the occupants reportedly had a gun and was able to disarm him.

Rapper Silentó — who went viral in 2015 with his hit “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)” — is facing felony charges after entering a stranger’s hime looking for his girlfriend while carrying a hatchet.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the 22-year-old artist, real name Richard Lamar Hawk, was taken into custody on Saturday (Aug. 29) after walking into a random, unlocked residence in the Valley Village area of Los Angeles, where he tried to attack two people with the hatchet, XXL reports.

One of the occupants reportedly had a gun and was able to disarm him.

Hawk’s girlfriend did not live in the home. TMZ notes that Hawk’s friend arrived shortly after and informed him he was in the wrong house. The two reportedly fled as the police were called. Officers caught up with Hawk and took him to jail.

The homeowners and their children were home at the time of the harrowing intrusion and luckily no one was harmed. According to.a report from ABC 7, Hawk is now facing two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon, the LAPD said in a news release

If convicted as charged, he could spend up to six years in state prison. Prosecutors are seeking a enhanced sentence because the crime was committed while Hawk was out on bail for a previous arrest in Santa Ana.

A day prior to the hatchet incident, he was taken into custody after a domestic disturbance. He was charged with inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant and released, according to the report. The next day he went looking for his girlfriend with a hatchet.

Hawk is in custody on $105,000 bail, and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday (Sept. 4).

“Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)” was a social media phenomenon in 2015, and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single has been certified six-times Platinum.

Hawk released an album, “Fresh Outta High School,” in 2018.

Doc Rivers’ impassioned speech on race turned into ad by conservatives against Trump

Doc Rivers’ impromptu speech on race and the RNC was turned into an ad by the Lincoln Project, a group led by Republicans and conservatives

LA Clippers coach Doc Rivers has been around the league for a long time. He has three sons of his own, including Houston Rockets player Austin Rivers, and a ‘bonus’ son in Dallas Mavericks player Seth Curry who married his daughter, Callie.

Needless to say as a father, grandfather, and coach of over two decades, Rivers, 58, has spent much of his adult life raising and guiding young Black men. Therefore his impassioned speech after a game while the Republican National Convention was going on last month should have come as no surprise.

Asked about race in a post-game press conference, a visibly moved Rivers asked how he could love America when America didn’t love him back.

“What stands out to me is just watching the Republican Convention,” Rivers said.

“They’re spewing this fear, right? You hear Donald Trump and all of them talking about fear. We’re the ones getting killed. We’re the ones getting shot. We’re the ones that were denied to live in certain communities. We’ve been hung. We’ve been shot. All you do is keep hearing about fear. It’s amazing to me why we keep loving this country, and this country does not love us back. It’s really so sad.”

The impassioned speech has now been turned into an ad by The Lincoln Project, an organization formed by conservatives and Republicans who believe President Donald Trump is a significant threat to American democracy and is supporting the election of Joe Biden.

Rick Wilson, the co-founder of The Lincoln Project, says the original video was shared with him through a friend who knows Rivers. He recognized its power right away, working to turn it into an ad that juxtaposes Rivers’ words with images of the summer’s protests after the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. Rivers gave the ad his blessing.

“Doc has a particular gravity to him that cut across the political moment that we’re in, ” Wilson says in an exclusive interview with theGrio.

“His response was so visceral and so passionate and so real based on the experience of any African American man in that moment. There are plenty of ads I’ve made over the years when I said ‘that was a good performance.”

Wilson continues about the impact the words Rivers had.

“This wasn’t a performance – it was a window into his soul,” he declares.

Last month, Rivers was among the coaches providing some wisdom to NBA players led by the Milwaukee Bucks, who refused to take the floor for a closeout game against the Orlando Magic on Aug. 26. As reported by theGrio, the players were protesting the shooting of Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old father shot eight times in the back by Kenosha, Wisconsin police.

Kenosha is roughly 45 minutes from the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee where the Bucks play. The team’s impromptu strike rippled through the sports world, suspending the NBA playoffs for two days and in three other major sports leagues as the WNBA, and some teams in major league baseball and major league soccer also refused to play.

That frustration was echoed in Rivers’ lament.

“That video, if you watch that video, you don’t need to be black to be outraged,” Rivers said. “You need to be American and outraged. How dare the Republicans talk about fear? We’re the ones that need to be scared. We’re the ones having to talk to every black child. What white father has to give his son a talk about being careful if you get pulled over?”

The images in the ad show protests, scenes from the Republican National Convention, and police in riot gear meeting peaceful protestors with force. It captures both the indomitable spirit of those seeking civil rights and the impact of having to constantly assert your humanity.

The Lincoln Project, which is also responsible for the ‘Flag of Treason’ ad that took issue with the persistence of the Confederate flag, hopes that the pain in Rivers’ words translates to those still on the fence. Now online and on TV, the ad is targeted to voters in Pennsylvania and Florida who have yet to recognize that Trump’s presidency has fanned the flames of divisiveness and fallen short of America’s promise and its stated ideals.

“I want this to help motivate and mobilize people in this election- younger voters in particular,” Wilson says. “There are issues Donald Trump will ignore or weaponize in this race… I want to make sure we have a narrative for what’s happened for real in this country.”

US Intel bulletin warns Russia is ‘amplifying’ claims of mail-in voter fraud

President Donald Trump told his supporters to vote twice to make a point about alleged voter fraud

Russia is interfering with the presidential election by promoting false claims about mail-in voter fraud according to an intelligence bulletin issued by the Department of Homeland Security.

ABC News obtained the bulletin and reported that Russia sought to “amplify” claims that there is inherent fraud and disenfranchisement with mail-in voting. Federal and state officials received a warning on Thursday that the meddling by “Russian malign influence actors” who have attacked the voting process “by spreading disinformation.”

According to officials from the Department of Homeland Security’s intelligence branch, this manipulation has been taking place since March.

“Russian state media and proxy websites in mid-August 2020 criticized the integrity of expanded and universal vote-by-mail, claiming ineligible voters could receive ballots due to out-of-date voter rolls, leaving a vast amount of ballots unaccounted for and vulnerable to tampering,” the bulletin notes.

“These websites also alleged that vote-by-mail processes would overburden the U.S. Postal Service and local boards of election,” it continues, “delaying vote tabulation and creating more opportunities for fraud and error.”

These efforts by the Russians align with President Donald Trump’s aversion to mail-in voting. The shared belief has caused concern for John Cohen, the former undersecretary for intelligence at DHS under President Barack Obama.

“This most recent DHS intelligence report along with other recent reporting by intelligence and law enforcement entities should put to rest any doubts that Russia is spreading conspiracy theories and lies in an effort to influence the outcome of the 2020 election by undermining confidence in the election process and influence voter opinion,” said Cohen, also an ABC News contributor.

As theGrio previously reported, the president has cast doubt on the integrity of voting by mail.

He’s also been accused of attempting to suppress the vote by turning the United States Postal Service into a political tool.

Mailboxes were taken off the streets and destroyed as there have been increased delays in the mail. Democrats have contended that US Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, a Republican fundraiser, is destabilizing the agency to help Trump win re-election.

Trump once again voiced his concerns about mail-in voting on Wednesday during an exchange with reporters in Wilmington, N.C. He wanted voters to mail in a ballot and then vote in-person to test the reliability of the process.

“They are going to have to check their vote by going to the poll and voting that way because if it tabulates, then they won’t be able to do that,” Trump said. “So let them send it in, and let them go vote. And if their system is as good as they say it is, then obviously they won’t be able to vote. If it isn’t tabulated, they will be able to vote.”

By Thursday, the president began to reel in his comments as voting twice is against the law.

“Go to your polling place to see whether or not your Mail In Vote has been tabulated (Counted.) If it has you will not be able to Vote & the Mail In System worked properly,” he tweeted.

The president’s campaign further told ABC News that they were not cooperating with Russians to delegitimize mail-in voting.

“We don’t need or want any foreign interference,” Tim Murtaugh, a Trump campaign spokesperson, said.

“President Trump will beat Joe Biden fair and square.”

Mayor suspends officers involved in Daniel Prude’s suffocation death

‘Mr. Daniel Prude was failed by the police department, our mental health care system, our society and he was failed by me,’ said Mayor Lovely Warren.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — The mayor of New York’s third-largest city on Thursday suspended seven police officers involved in the suffocation death of Daniel Prude last March.

Prude, a 41-year-old Black man known to his Chicago-based family as “Rell,” died March 30 when his family took him off life support, seven days after officers who encountered him running naked through the street put a hood over his head to stop him from spitting, then held him down for about two minutes until he stopped breathing.

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren announced the suspension of the officers at a Thursday press conference.

“Mr. Daniel Prude was failed by the police department, our mental health care system, our society and he was failed by me,” Warren said.

Warren said she only became aware of the use of force on Aug. 4, and that Police Chief La’Ron Singletary initially portrayed Prude’s death as a drug overdose, which is “entirely different” than what she witnessed in body camera video. The mayor said she told the chief she was “deeply, personally and professionally disappointed” in his failure to accurately inform her what happened to Prude.

Warren said the seven officers would still be paid because of contract rules and that she was taking the action against the advise of counsel.

“I understand that the union may sue the city for this. They shall feel free to do so,” she said.

Warren did not announce any action against Singletary. Police spokeswoman Jackie Shuman did not immediately respond to a requests for comment.

Messages left with the union representing Rochester police officers were not immediately returned Thursday.

Prude’s death happened just as the coronavirus was raging out of control in New York and received no public attention at the time.

Wednesday, Prude’s family held a news conference and released police body camera video obtained through a public records request that captured his fatal interaction with the officers.

Prude had been taken to a Rochester hospital for a mental health evaluation about eight hours before the encounter that led to his death. He was released back into the care of his family and then abruptly ran into the street and took off his clothes.

Prude had been traumatized by the deaths of his mother and a brother in recent years, having lost another brother before that, his aunt Letoria Moore said in an interview. In his final months, he’d been going back and forth between his Chicago home and his brother’s place in Rochester because he wanted to be close to him, she said.

She knew her nephew had some psychological issues, she said. Still, when he called two days before his death, “he was the normal Rell that I knew,” Moore said.

“I didn’t know what was the situation, why he was going through what he was going through that night, but I know he didn’t deserve to be killed by the police,” she said.

Daniel Prude.

When officers found Prude, they handcuffed him, put a hood over his head because he had been spitting, and then pressed his face into the pavement for two minutes, police video shows.

The hoods are intended to protect officers from a detainee’s saliva and have been scrutinized as a factor in the deaths of several prisoners in recent years.

The videos show Prude, his voice muffled by the hood, begging the white officer pushing his head down to let him go. As the officer, Mark Vaughn, says, “Calm down” and “Stop spitting,” Prude’s shouts became anguished whimpers and grunts.

“OK, stop. I need it. I need it,” he says.

The officer lets Prude go after about two minutes when he stops moving and falls silent. Officers then notice water coming out of Prude’s mouth and call over waiting medics, who start CPR.

A medical examiner concluded that Prude’s death was a homicide caused by “complications of asphyxia in the setting of physical restraint.” The report lists excited delirium and acute intoxication by phencyclidine, or PCP, as contributing factors.

New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office took over the investigation of the death in April. It is ongoing.

Protesters demonstrated Wednesday at the police headquarters building in Rochester and at the spot where Prude died.

Activists are demanding that the officers involved be suspended and prosecuted on murder charges.

FBI investigating after pilot calls in man on jet pack at LAX

The FBI is investigating after the unidentified man flew 3,000 feet in the air near airplanes at LAX

The FBI launched an investigation this month after a pilot reported spotting a “guy in jetpack” flying 3,000 feet in the air near planes at LAX.

According to The Los Angeles Times, Tuesday, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said agents at LAX were investigating after the pilot reported the incident to the control tower.

“Tower, American 1997. We just passed a guy in a jet pack,” the first American Airlines pilot stated during the call.

“We just saw the guy pass us by in the jet pack,” a second pilot from Jet Blue Airways then tells the tower, which warned another pilot about the sighting.

“Only in L.A.,” the air traffic controller says at one point.

“Two airline flight crews reported seeing what appeared to be someone in a jet pack as they were on their final approach to LAX around 6:35 p.m. Sunday,” spokesman Ian Gregor told City News Service.

The agency later confirmed in a statement, “The FBI is aware of the reports by pilots on Sunday and is working to determine what occurred.”

A local FOX affiliate reports, “Based on research, jetpacks can fly that high but is pretty uncommon. There’s an assumption that people with the technical and financial ability to fly at this extreme height and near an airport would also understand the regulations around flying in LAX’s flight path.”

A theory has been suggested that the incident could be an internet or social media stunt according to the report.

“No one has come forward to say they were flying a jetpack, and normally the promotional or fun videos we’ve seen of them are much lower in the sky, aimed at vacationers or thrill-seekers who blast off with a pack attached to their backs for a few seconds of low-level flight,” the report continued.

Oakland Entrepreneurs Launch $1 Billion Investment Fund For Black Businesses Impacted by COVID

Elisse Douglass and Trevor Parham

The deaths of several unarmed Black civilians at the hands of law enforcement officials have spurred protests around the country in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Because of this, numerous businesses have been pushed to the brink of extinction or been forced to close.

Two entrepreneurs, Elisse Douglass and Trevor Parham, decided to help local businesses during the pandemic. Their Oakland Black Business Fund was established in June to aid Black-owned businesses in the Bay Area. In addition to the relief efforts, the duo has created a $1 billion investment fund to help Black entrepreneurs nationwide survive the economic fallout from the pandemic.

The fund started after Douglass decided to create a community-oriented crowdfunding site for businesses affected by the Black Lives Matter protests.

“That took off and we brought in $100,000 in less than a week and a half,” Parham said in an interview with Crunchbase.

“We felt that with the influx of capital and coverage, we had more money than we initially set out to deploy,” he added. “We immediately realized that there was more we could do. We knew the overall approach could be a bigger impact with much bigger dollars.”

Parham said he hopes the fund will fill the void between Black entrepreneurs and mainstream funds who often shut them out.

“There is a disconnect between mainstream capital markets and the value of Black businesses, especially if they are not doing a tech product that falls within the mainstream of other tech products,” he explained. “What I have seen is that there are two factors: bias and racism, and that is valid, but another part is interest and intention. Investors might not truly know how to find them or plug-in in a way that is financially sound or feel like they are steering too much.

“We are aware of the conversation around Black Lives Matter and racial injustice and we are doing something that takes a business approach to addressing some of the larger societal concerns people have,” he said. “Economics is not the only answer, but by investing in Black businesses, we are creating a response to overcome a lot of the challenges.”

Mother-Daughter Trio Open Up About Their Franchise Empire in Maryland

Toya Evans and her two daughters, Lauren Williamson and Chanel Grant, are becoming franchise powerhouses in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

In 2015, they decided to invest in themselves and start a family business.  Due to their love of health and wellness, they chose to purchase their first Tropical Smoothie Café franchise.  While operating and opening additional locations, they felt it was the right time to diversify the brands in their portfolio.  In October, Evans, Williamson, and Grant are set to open Hand and Stone Massage and Facial Spa in Brandywine, the first in Prince George’s County.

BLACK ENTERPRISE spoke to Lauren and Chanel about their growing empire.

Black Enterprise:  This is only the second time I’ve profiled a mother-daughter trio on their success in franchising, so it’s a pleasure to see more African American mothers and daughters building empires together.  How did your journey start?

Chanel Grant:  We grew up watching our parents be entrepreneurs, so it came naturally.  Initially, we considered starting our own juice bar, but because we were all working full time in corporate jobs (and still are!) we knew franchising would be a better option.  Franchises generally have a faster ramp-up time with already established brand recognition.  We also knew that we wanted to own multi-units in the health and wellness space, so we created Healthy Living Ventures, LLC, and started looking at various brands.  Tropical Smoothie Café checked all of our boxes on what we wanted to offer to the community.

Lauren Williamson: (laughing) We went in very aggressive with the plan to open 10+ units.  After learning more, we slowed that down.  It took us a few years to open our second location.  What’s great though is that once you get that first store done, things do get easier.  We do plan to continue adding Tropical Smoothie Café locations but are focusing on non-traditional locations such as military bases and airports.

The Next Chapter

Black Enterprise: How did you decide to venture next into spa services?

Grant:  We really liked the Hand and Stone brand and lifestyle.  In 2011, we moved to Prince George’s County and were very deliberate in our thinking in terms of bringing something new here.  Where we moved from had lots of healthy food options and wellness services, but very little of that was available in Prince George’s County.  After we opened the first Tropical Smoothie Café and saw how receptive the community was to it, we wanted to bring more.  In addition to loving the Hand and Stone brand, we also appreciated their innovation with massage techniques, facials, and the use of CBD’s.  It also helped that they were ranked very high in Forbes magazine!

BE:  I have to ask an obvious question.  How comfortable are you launching a spa business in the middle of Covid19?

Grant:  Honestly, we’re still trying to figure it out – but we are planning to open in October.  We’re actually quite optimistic!  Believe it or not, we opened our second Tropical Smoothie Café location in May – during Covid19.  That store is doing very well, which is what makes us optimistic.  Hand and Stone has been very proactive as far as safety measures.  We are still navigating what it will look like and making smart decisions – such as scaling back on the big-budget we had planned for the grand opening.

Williamson:  But it’s important to note that when Covid19 hit, we were already far down the road with Hand and Stone.  Timing is everything though.  Delays happen for a reason, and in this case, we were originally supposed to open in October of 2019.  This delay turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

BE: What challenges have you encountered as African American franchise owners?

Williamson:  Unfortunately, there are certain negative stereotypes tied to communities of color around spending habits.  My mom grew up in Prince George’s County and knows it very well.  The locations we initially proposed to Tropical Smoothie were not considered prime locations.  Fast forward, and now some of the best performing Tropical Smoothie Café’s are in those areas which are predominantly African American.  The reason these stores are outperforming expectations is because they’re located in healthy food deserts.  Black people will spend money if the product and services are good and are convenient to where they live and work.

Hand and Stone was completely on board with expanding into Prince George’s County because one of their largest competitors is here.  They know that an affordable spa model works in this community.

Grant:  We will be the first location in Prince George’s County.  The next closest is Annapolis.  I anticipate that there will be a learning curve for the community, so our focus will be on educating the community on how important self-care is.

Williamson:  Overall though, both brands have been quite open to our requests and recommendations.  We are able to advocate for diversity in marketing and leadership.  They have made some changes as a result.  My mom sits on the national Marketing Committee and the DC Coop Board and pushes for inclusion.

Start Before You’re Ready

BE:  What advice do you have for budding entrepreneurs on building a business empire?

Grant:  Start before you’re ready!  We went into this decision knowing that we wanted to have multiple locations, but it was challenging.  We literally boot-strapped our first location.  We cobbled together resources and got creative.  We applied for a grant from the County and leveraged credit cards.  We also used our homes for collateral.  As hard as it might be, you cannot give up.  If you hear “no” from a lender (even 30+ lenders!) it just means no from THAT lender.  There are others, so you have to push through the obstacles.  After we got our first location open, the chips started to fall.  Not only do you have lenders approaching you with additional funding opportunities, but the brand also sees your success and wants to help you grow.

Williamson:  What I like about our story is that it’s far from picture-perfect, and that helps people relate.  You don’t have to have it all together to be successful.  One thing that Chanel always says is “leap and the net will appear”.  You’re going to be scared about anything you do that has some risk, but you can’t be so afraid that you refuse to take the leap.  Do your homework, but if you feel you will be good at it, just leap and do it.

BE:  How did you two become advocates for franchising?

Williamson:  This has become a big focus for us.  When we started, we learned that there were over 800,000 franchise owners across the globe – only 8% were African American.  We started wondering why African Americans weren’t taking advantage of all that franchising has to offer.  What we found out is that there was a lack of education or they were scared about the investment level.  That was a turning point for us.  We had done so much research in our preparation for selecting our brands that we decided to bundle it together and create an online course called “So You Want to Buy a Franchise?”.  It has been such a blessing to see people learning from the course and we’ve gotten incredible feedback.  We’ve also started doing Facebook Live and Instagram Story sessions.

Howard University Receives $550,000 Grant for the Quantum Biology Laboratory

Howard University STEM students

Howard University has announced that the Quantum Biology Laboratory (QBL) has received a major $550,000 grant from the Guy Foundation (GF) that will be used over the course of the next two years. This is the first time the United Kingdom-based Guy Foundation has awarded a grant to an institution outside the UK and the third scientific research project supported by the Guy Foundation since it was established 2 years ago in 2018.

The grant will support the Quantum Biology Laboratory in exploring fundamental questions at the nexus of quantum theory, electrodynamics, and biosystems. It will be under the direction of QBL Principal Investigator and Founding Director Philip Kurian (Ph.D. ’13).

“This is a landmark moment for the QBL, and for Howard,” said Kurian, a theoretical physicist. “It demonstrates our University’s institutional commitment to research in the quantum sciences, particularly quantum biology.”

The QBL’s work extends beyond fundamental science. “Oxidative stress, an important factor in the progression and severity of chronic degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and cancer, may modulate or disrupt ultrafast signaling processes in the cell through molecular emission of packets of light. Study of these light-enabled signaling pathways will provide insights into mechanisms behind the mystery of human conscious processing,” said Kurian.

“Awarding this grant to Dr. Kurian was an important step in fulfilling the Foundation’s aims of bringing together leading scientists interested in quantum biology from around the world, which would ensure that this field of science finally reaches a critical mass and fulfills its destiny of answering some of the deepest questions about life itself,” said Guy Foundation Founder and Chairman, Geoffrey Guy.

“The Quantum Biology Lab is a wonderful example of what happens when researchers are free to collaborate and to think within and beyond their specific disciplines. As a research professor in the Graduate School, Dr. Kurian continues to bring exciting projects to Howard while also sharing with the world research that is informed by Howard’s uniqueness. I look forward to seeing how this award will continue to advance groundbreaking research Dr. Kurian and his team will initiate at Howard,” said Dana A. Williams, interim dean of the Graduate School at Howard University.

NBA Star Tracy McGrady, Ben Crump And Others Back the Advance Black Americans In Sports Non-Profit

Black Americans

Gary Charles is teaming up with several high-profile individuals to launch Advancement of Blacks in Sports Inc. (ABIS), a nonprofit organization with a mission to boldly advocate for racial, social, and economic justice for Black Americans in sports.

According to a press release, Charles has been working vigorously on the effort in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death and has partnered with a unique team of leading African American professionals in sports, music, law, and business to assist in the normalization of equal rights and fair treatment of Black Americans.

Some of the members of ABIS include, former NBA All-Star Tracy McGrady, civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, rapper Chuck D, Florida State Men’s Basketball Coach Leonard Hamilton, and female college basketball coaches Dawn Staley and C. Vivian Stringer, among many others.

ABIS will work toward eradicating inequitable hiring practices among professional sports organizations, improving economic opportunities for minority-owned business at sporting events, generating knowledge of Black history in sports, promoting voter registration and participation, and protecting student-athletes at all collegiate levels.

Charles said in a statement, ABIS will work to continue the legacy former Georgetown coach John Thompson Jr. and other Black Americans in sports have created.

“The passing of John Thompson means another American icon has passed away. One of the best ways to honor him is for us to continue the legacy he started,” Charles said in a statement. “We have not been fully embraced in the board room, have not been offered a substantial amount of head coaching positions, and have been consistently blocked out of revenues earned through contracts specific to athletics. It’s time for advancement.”

According to Charles, ABIS will focus on the development and holistic growth of the intercollegiate athlete, and the state and federal legislation affecting student athletes. ABIS will also work to team student-athletes with professionals who are willing to use their voice for the betterment of all Black Americans in sports, whether its playing or working in the sports industry.
