Kamala Harris on What a Joe Biden Presidency Means for Students, HBCU’s, and Black Families

kamala harris extends school day

After three-and-a-half years of living in Donald Trump’s America, Sen. Kamala Harris is doing all she can to prevent the reality TV star from spending another four years in the White House. According to Harris, a top contender on Joe Biden’s shortlist of potential running mates, the country might not be able to recover from “irreparable” damage should President Trump get reelected in November.

During an interview with BLACK ENTERPRISE, the California senator pitched Biden’s “Build Back Better” plan for economic recovery and racial equality, an all-encompassing proposal to stimulate the economy and level the playing field for communities of color. Under the plan, $150 billion would be invested in minority businesses, minimum wage would be raised to $15 an hour, cash bail would be eliminated, and formerly incarcerated people would be provided temporary housing upon release from prison.

“This plan that Joe Biden is offering around dealing with racial disparity in the economy is a very important step because he is his acknowledging that racial equities have to be a part of the priority.”

Harris specifically highlighted parts of his plan that would cancel $10,000 of student loan debt for borrowers with federal student loans and make both public colleges and private historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) tuition-free for families making up to $125,000 a year.

“Ninety percent of black students take out student loans. And what he is proposing as part of his ‘Build Back Better’ plan is that for families who have an income of $125,000 or less, they will be able to attend HBCUs, including private HBCUs and public universities and colleges, tuition-free,” said the Howard University grad.

Harris also pointed out that Biden’s plan offers “$15,000 refundable tax credit for first-time homebuyers,” which, she says, will help families build generational wealth. “When we look at the rates of homeownership within the black community, we know that we are still looking at great disparities.”

Despite being criticized for calling Donald Trump the “first” racist president and joking that “you ain’t Black” if you vote for Trump, Harris says she is doing all she can to help Biden’s campaign, arguing that the difference between the Trump administration and a Biden presidency is “night and day.”

“I am really looking forward to doing everything I can in whatever capacity to help Joe Biden be elected the next president of the United States,” she said. “This one without any question is the most important election of our lifetime.”

Harris went on to list a number of examples where Trump’s policies and rhetoric have hurt Americans and created division, starting with his handling of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

“Over 4 million people have contracted the virus,” she said. “African Americans and Latinos are three times as likely to contract the virus and are twice as likely to die from it. And Donald Trump has his attorney general, who, in my opinion, is his personal lawyer, Bill Barr, in court right now trying to get rid of The Affordable Care Act that Barack Obama together with Joe Biden instituted that brought health care to tens of millions of people who didn’t happen. Let’s start there.”

The senator went on to note when the president referred to African and Caribbean nations as “s—thole countries,” called white supremacists “very fine people,” and called climate change a “hoax.”

“I do fear that if Donald Trump is reelected that the damage that he has done may be irreparable.”

“I’m just that way, and music sometimes takes a hit naturally because these other things are crucial in terms of timelines and production, and there’s so much that people will never understand that goes on behind the scenes,” she added.

The Navy has been waiting four years for new music. Rihanna’s last album, “Anti,” was released in 2016. Since then, the Barbadian beauty has been busy expanding her Fenty empire, which includes the Fenty Beauty line, Savage x Fenty lingerie collection and the Fenty fashion brand.

“Music is still my first love, so I can’t wait to put something out that I’m really proud of and excited about,” she tells Access Hollywood.  “It is probably gonna be sooner than my fans think, but I’m just gonna leave that alone,” she teased.

“I got enough stress and questions and ‘R9, where’s the album?’ comments,” Rihanna continued. “They don’t leave me alone, but I haven’t neglected them. I still gotchu, music is still my baby.”

“When I am ready to put it out in the way that I feel fit, it’s gonna come out. And you’re not going to be disappointed when it happens. It’s going to be worth it,” she said.

Rihanna’s new gender neutral skin-care brand was made for all skin tones and types.

“Everybody has skin, and everybody should take care of it, so I never approached skincare or making this line from a gender standpoint. I didn’t want anyone to feel excluded or be excluded,” Rihanna said.

Sinkhole,” was originally written by Krow in 2011 and is a story about a couple beginning their marriage journey. Therein, the couple decides to purchase a house for themselves, their kids, and pets. However, the house they decide to purchase has a sinkhole in the backyard.

Initially, the couple puts a fence around the hole to safeguard. But eventually, the sinkhole is then disregarded. That is until the couple’s own curiosity leads them to investigate. Upon their investigation, the two discover the healing properties of the sinkhole. Every broken thing they drop into it reappears in their home “fixed”.

The ability of the sinkhole to fix imperfections leads to the wife challenging her internal view on traits she deems as flaws.

Krow’s writing is just over 1,500 words, so the length of this short story creates an opportunity for these industry favorites to use their creativity. Both stars have become known for producing critically acclaimed content that features Black talent and centers Black stories.

Social Media Giants Remove Video of Doctors Making False Coronavirus Claims

Coronavirus

A video featuring a group of doctors making false and dubious claims related to the coronavirus was removed by several social media outlets Tuesday.

According to CNN, the video was removed by Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, but not before it was viewed millions of times. The video, published by the far right Breitbart News, featured a group of people dressed in lab coats, calling themselves “America’s frontline doctors” standing in front of the U.S. Supreme Court.

In the video, the doctors made a series of unsubstantiated claims related to the coronavirus, including that “you don’t need masks” to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, and that recent studies showing hydroxychloroquine being ineffective for the treatment of Covid-19 are “fake science” sponsored by “fake pharma companies.”

“This virus has a cure, it’s called hydroxychloroquine, zinc, and Zithromax,” a woman claims. “You don’t need masks, there is a cure.”

The advice runs counter to multiple studies on the anti-malarial drug and the advice of numerous medical experts, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

A study determined neither hydroxychloroquine alone nor hydroxychloroquine plus azithromycin changed the condition of coronavirus patients after 15 days. The study did find that in coronavirus patients, the drugs did lead to unusual heart rhythms and elevated liver-enzyme levels.

The video quickly went viral on Facebook with with more than 14 million views and 600,000 shares before it was shut down, according to Crowdtangle.

“We’ve removed this video for sharing false information about cures and treatments for COVID-19,” a Facebook spokesperson told CNN, adding that the platform is “showing messages in News Feed to people who have reacted to, commented on or shared harmful COVID-19-related misinformation that we have removed, connecting them to myths debunked by the WHO.”

Twitter began to remove the video late Monday night after President Trump shared versions of the video that amassed hundreds of thousands of views. Twitter also took action on a version of the video posted by Donald Trump Jr. and others shared by Breitbart News.

“We’re taking action in line with our Covid misinformation policy,” a Twitter spokesperson told CNN
The video was also removed on Youtube where it was viewed about 40,000 times.

Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Appoints Tonya Veasey New CEO

Tonya Veasey

Earlier this month, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF), a non-partisan nonprofit and educational institute focused on advancing the global Black community, announced Tonya Veasey as its new president and CEO. Her hope is to create a framework to guide the community through these tumultuous political times.

After running her own businesses for over 14 years, Veasey sees her appointment as a natural progression given her connections and work with the foundation. “My husband is actually a member of Congress, so for a while I was heavily involved in the spouses organization [and] served on the [CDCF] board,” Veasey said in an interview with BLACK ENTERPRISE.

“Our [current] board chair, [Congressman Cedric Richmond,] said, ‘You could you step in on an interim basis and help us really assess what do we need to do to move the foundation forward to build a strong infrastructure.’ So, I did that for about four months and really enjoyed the work…I knew the team, so I wasn’t a stranger coming in. I not only know the members, but I also know our internal team as well as a lot of our sponsors and partners, [so] it was a great opportunity.”

In a time where public policy around Black issues is more critical than ever with the upcoming elections, Veasey plans to use her leadership skills to shape new initiatives to move the foundation forward.

“I think we have an [unique] opportunity…because people are at home and we are starting to do more virtual programs. I think we have an opportunity to connect with our community in a much broader way,” she explains.

“[We believe] that what we know is best and then it’s time for us to really listen and make sure that we are aligned [with] amazing energy with our younger brothers and sisters that are out here…I am [currently launching] a national racial equity initiative and I’m very excited about [it]. That was really in response to what we are currently facing in society.”

Sister of ‘Pose’ star Ryan Jamaal Swain fatally shot in Alabama

Brokenhearted actor says that his sister, Raven, was his ’ride or die’ partner in life

Raven Lynette Swain’s family members described her as having a heart of gold.

She was 24 years old and lived in Birmingham. She was also the sister of Ryan Jamaal Swain who is well-known for his role as Damon Richards-Evangelista on the hit FX tv series, Pose

READ MORE: Steven Canals talks ‘Pose,’ success and Afro-Latin identity

Raven was found in the driver’s seat of a car yesterday and was pronounced dead on the scene. Evidence in the park and parking lot indicated multiple shots had been fired. The cause of her death has not been determined.

It is being reported that she was a shooting victim.

At least one woman, who lives nearby, reported hearing the shots fired. Dozens of Swain’s family and friends rushed to the scene.

“Right now our detectives are canvassing the area,‘’ Birmingham Sgt. Rod Mauldin said. “We don’t have many details of what took place.”

“We don’t know if this took place somewhere else and her vehicle came to a stop here or if it happened here,‘’ Mauldin said. “We are working hard but we need people to come forward with information.”

Her big brother, Ryan Jamaal Swain, is a star of the FX show, Pose.

The young star took to Instagram to share the news with his fans. His heartbreaking caption read, “The unimaginable happened last night, my heart, little sister, my ride or die, my partner in life took her last breath.

Raven Lynette Swain, my heart is broken. I cannot even imagine life without you and I won’t. At the moment, we are hurting, gathering information, planning next steps, and lifting you up. This is not done. We will have swift justice. 🙏🏽”

In an interview with The Wrap, Swain said he would like his character to visit his biological family.

“I think I would love to see Damon go back to his hometown, mend that relationship or try to mend, or try to find power from a space he felt so weak.”

Swain said that he could see Damon’s storyline as a way to reach out to queer young adults.

“I think that a lot of queer artists and people that are just on the fringes of American society they feel this… trying to appease and to approval-seek with their families,” Swain said.

Pose was nominated for just one Emmy Award this week. Billy Porter was nominated for Lead Actor in a drama series.

The trans actors of the show recently spoke about their Emmy snub.

Star Indya Moore wrote, “Imagine if we depended on cis ppl to validate anything about us.”

Angelica Ross wrote, “Ultimately, I need you to understand that I am so tired,” she said. “Because those of you that know me know that I’m not just working in front of the screen or behind the lens or whatever. I’m working around the clock to get our society to value trans lives and Black trans lives. And listen, I feel what I feel because I feel like there is nothing we can do.”

Birmingham police are seeking information into Raven Swain’s death. Anyone with information is asked to call Birmingham homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.

Q&A: Peter Fisher discusses JASON report on reopening university laboratories

What will it take for research universities across the U.S. to safely open their labs? That’s the subject of a recently released report by JASON, an independent group of scientists who advise the U.S. government about science and technology, in association with the MITRE Corporation. The report was led by Peter Fisher, professor and head of MIT’s Department of Physics, who is a JASON member. (MIT has separately examined the question, and began a phased ramp-up of lab research in June; Fisher participated in MIT reopening efforts as well.) MIT News talked with Fisher about the JASON report.

Q: What are the main things the JASON report recommends to universities trying to reopen labs?

A: Probably the top-level things are just mask-wearing, handwashing, and social distancing. Those are three things that everybody can do. And people know this, but the report looks in exhaustive detail at why those things are important — from the physics of masks to a whole section on air handling and how the virus builds up in the air. The design of campuses, including MIT, is intended to bring people together as much as possible, so we are really fighting the physical nature of MIT.

The research is important because the people who work in the labs and come back to campuses have to buy into these rules. And I think they buy in much better if they understand the science behind the rules.

Q: One implication of the report is that details matter greatly. For instance, the report notes that, compared to breathing, the viral load people exhale from speaking is 20 times as great — so you recommend communicating via text, whiteboards, scratch pads, or other nonverbal means. And the report has a section on proper mask fitting. Won’t people have to get used to some distinctly new practices?

A: Yes. For example, really minimize the amount you speak. And you can whisper. The amount that comes out between breathing [on the one hand], and speaking, singing, and shouting [on the other] is just enormous. … [Regarding masks], if you are in a hospital wearing one, part of the standard operating procedure is there is a specialist who fits it onto your face. There’s a metal bar that goes across your nose and it’s all about how you press down that metal bar so it forms a good seal, going across your nose and your cheekbones.

Q: Beyond those things, the report suggests making aggregate health information available to community in a dashboard format. Why would that help?

A: Because people are competitive. And sometimes if you want to get people to do something, you turn it into a game. Also, from some of the work the organization does with the military, there is what’s called situational awareness. That comes down to a few numbers that tell you how you’re doing. And for Covid-19, it would be how many tests have you administered; how many of them came back positive; how many people are coming onto campus every day; and how many of them are not complying with the rules, like wearing masks. It’s all anonymous, but it gives you a snapshot of how you’re doing.

When you design a system, you can’t just assume that compliance is going to be 100 percent. It’s going to be lower, and you have to account for that in your planning and thinking. That’s one [reason] we talked about the dashboard. Another thing [that helps] is really good modeling. At MIT, the senior researchers and faculty are very highly regarded and closely watched. And I think really the faculty and senior research staff have to model this behavior.

Q: The report also discusses whether university campuses can be “islands” apart from the pandemic, or part of larger community. What are some of the factors at play there?

A: It depends on what you’re willing to do and where you are. MIT is an urban campus and Cambridge is one of the most densely populated places around. Everybody on campus, before the Covid-19, relied on the surrounding community for something — food, entertainment, health services. And it’s hard to change that. Inevitably, how a university is doing is going to be closely coupled to the community it’s embedded in. It’s true of all the big Boston-area campuses.

In [rural cases], the college can separate itself pretty well from the city. … [For example], at Vassar they are having a strict rule: Nobody leaves campus, and they’re going to try to make it into a bubble. Some colleges, you can draw a line around campus, and it’s clear what is campus and what is not campus. But MIT leaks out all into the city.

Q: It seems apparent from all this that some universities might have midstream, midsemester decisions to make. There might be plans in place, but don’t institutions have to keep in mind that circumstances can change, this fall or further out in the future?

A: It’s really tough because the nature of this disease is that the people feeling symptoms now were infected five days ago. The people who are in the hospital now [were infected] 14 days ago. Knowing how many positive cases you’re getting today is not a great indicator of how many people are going to feel sick tomorrow. It’s an indicator of how many people are going to feel really sick in two weeks, and during that time, the virus can spread exponentially. So there are going to have to be some tough decisions to be made. You don’t want to have to suddenly make them when you have 400 sick students to contend with. I think MIT’s done smart things — including the single-room occupancy housing policy. The leadership at MIT is taking the long view.

One thing that everybody is only starting to struggle with is that the world just changed, in this really fundamental way. We’re all hoping it gets a lot better, but where that ends up is not going to be where we were at the start of 2020. We’re living through a remarkable moment in history. It’s quite daunting to think about, but what we always try to do with JASON [reports] is just detail the bedrock science.

LAPD run by ‘SWAT Mafia’ who ‘glamorize’ lethal force, sergeant says

The group threatens officers they consider  ‘enemies’ for speaking out against its use of lethal force.

A former SWAT sergeant with the LAPD is suing the department alleging that veteran cops encourage the use of deadly force and retaliate against anyone who calls out the misconduct.

Sgt. Tim Colomey, who spent 11 years as a SWAT supervisor until last November, claims in the suit filed on Tuesday that a group of officers dubbed the SWAT Mafia “glamorize the use of lethal force.” The legal docs also allege they control the unit’s membership and  “direct the promotions of officers who share the same values while maligning the reputations of officers who do not,” the lawsuit says, per Fox News.

The group allegedly threatens officers they consider  “enemies” for speaking out against its use of lethal force.

Read More: LA mayor announces ‘big step forward’ with new LAPD community bureau

“SWAT officers who have chosen not to use lethal force in suspect encounters, and who have instead sought to deescalate conflicts, have been ostracized and labeled ‘cowards’ by the SWAT Mafia. These officers will never succeed or promote within SWAT,” the lawsuit says, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“The SWAT Mafia’s control over SWAT has resulted in a deplorable binary choice for officers and supervisors within SWAT: Either adopt the SWAT Mafia’s aggressive ways and kowtow to them, and thereby flourish within the unit, or reject the SWAT Mafia’s culture of violence and stand up to its nepotism, and thereafter be pushed out of the unit,” the lawsuit continues. “As set forth below, Plaintiff chose the latter, and was forced out of SWAT for doing so.”

Colomey joined the LAPD in 1995 but left in 2019 after SWAT unit members retaliated against him for speaking out. The lawsuit reportedly does not cite specific examples of deadly or excessive force by the unit.

Meanwhile, several officers of the SWAT unit, known as “D Platoon,” are under investigation over alleged indecent behavior.

The lawsuit says commanders “are aware of the serious and systemic problems that are linked to the SWAT Mafia’s power, but they have all turned a blind eye to these problems.”
