Trump-Biden Debate Twitter Recap: Politics Is a Metaverse

The first 2020 presidential debate was a series of interruptions and half-thoughts—like the internet IRL.

Trump, Biden lash out, interrupt each other in angry debate

Fitting for an ugly campaign, the two men frequently talked over each other

CLEVELAND (AP) — Marked by angry interruptions and bitter accusations, the first debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden erupted in contentious exchanges Tuesday night over the coronavirus pandemic, job losses and how the Supreme Court will shape the future of the nation’s health care.

Fitting for an ugly campaign, the two men frequently talked over each other with Trump interrupting, nearly shouting, so often that Biden eventually snapped at him, “Will you shut up, man?”

“The fact is that everything he’s said so far is simply a lie,” Biden said. “I’m not here to call out his lies. Everybody knows he’s a liar.”

Trump and Biden arrived in Cleveland hoping the debate would energize their bases of support, even as they competed for the slim slice of undecided voters who could decide the election. It has been generations since two men asked to lead a nation facing such tumult, with Americans both fearful and impatient about the coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 200,000 of their fellow citizens and cost millions of jobs.

The vitriol exploded into the open when Biden attacked Trump’s handling of the pandemic, saying that the president “waited and waited” to act when the virus reached America’s shores and “still doesn’t have a plan.” Biden told Trump to “get out of your bunker and get out of the sand trap” and go in his golf cart to the Oval Office to come up with a bipartisan plan to save people.

Trump snarled a response, declaring that “I’ll tell you Joe, you could never have done the job that we did. You don’t have it in your blood.”

“I know how to do the job,” was the solemn response from Biden, who served eight years as Barack Obama‘s vice president.

The pandemic’s effects were in plain sight, with the candidates’ lecterns spaced far apart, all of the guests in the small crowd tested and the traditional opening handshake scrapped. The men did not shake hands and, while neither candidate wore a mask to take the stage, their families did sport face coverings.

Trump struggled to define his ideas for replacing the Affordable Care Act on health care in the debate’s early moments and defended his nomination of Amy Coney Barrett, declaring that “I was not elected for three years, I’m elected for four years.”

“We won the election. Elections have consequences. We have the Senate. We have the White House and we have a phenomenal nominee, respected by all.”

Trump criticized Biden over the former vice president’s refusal to comment on whether he would try to expand the Supreme Court in retaliation if Barrett is confirmed to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

With just 35 days until the election, and early voting already underway in some states, Biden stepped onto the stage holding leads in the polls — significant in national surveys, close in some battleground states — and looking to expand his support among suburban voters, women and seniors. Surveys show the president has lost significant ground among those groups since 2016, but Biden faces his own questions encouraged by Trump’s withering attacks.

Trump had arguably his best chance to try to reframe the campaign as a choice between candidates and not a referendum over his handling of the virus that has killed more people in America than any other nation. Americans, according to polling, have soured on his leadership in the crisis, and the president has struggled to land consistent attacks on Biden.

In the hours before the debate, Biden released his 2019 tax returns just days after the blockbuster revelations about Trump’s long-hidden tax history, including that he paid only $750 a year in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017 and nothing in many other years. The Bidens paid nearly $300,000 in taxes in 2019.

Trump, in the debate, insisted that he paid millions in taxes — but refused to say how much he paid in federal income taxes — and insisted that he had taken advantage of legal tax incentives, another angry exchange that led to Biden declaring that Trump was the “worst president” the nation has ever had.

Biden’s performances during the primary debates were uneven, and some Democrats have been nervous as to how he would fare in an unscripted setting. But his team also viewed the night as a chance to illuminate Trump’s failings with the pandemic and economy, with the former vice president acting as a “fact checker on the floor” while bracing himself for the onslaught that was coming.

The tumult of 2020 was difficult to overstate: COVID-19 has rewritten the rules of everyday life; racial justice protests have swept into cities after several highly publicized killings of Black people by police, and the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg allowed Trump to nominate a conservative jurist to replace a liberal voice and perhaps reshape the high court for generations.

Naya Rivera’s sister ‘not concerned’ with Ryan Dorsey dating rumors

The actress had been swimming in a California lake with her son in July when she drowned.

Naya Rivera’s sister Nickayla and her ex-husband Ryan Dorsey have found comfort in each other two months after the Glee star’s death.

Nickayla, 25, is catching the side-eye treatment from social media users after she and Dorsey, 37, were photographed appearing to hold hands while shopping at a Target in Los Angeles on Sept. 19, PEOPLE reports. The pair have also moved in together to care for Dorsey and Naya’s 5-year-old son Josey.

Dorsey and Rivera tied the knot in 2014 and divorced in 2018.

Nickayla took to social media to address criticism over her relationship with her sister’s ex. She hit up her Instagram Story on Monday night and asked that critics show ″compassion,” as she is simply ″showing up for my nephew.”

″In the darkest time of my life, the only thing that is important is my friends & family. Showing up for my nephew even though I can’t show up for myself,″ Nickayla explained.

She also noted that she’s ″not concerned with the way things look″ because ″no one can see each agonizing moment we all endure.″

″What matters most I’ve learned, is to show compassion, not to judge others and never take a moment for granted. I hope you can all do the same,” Nickayla concluded.

An insider tell Entertainment Tonight that Nickayla and Dorsey moved in together for the sake of the child, and that their relationship is not romantic.

“They simply share the same goal—to give Josey the best childhood possible and to raise him the best they can without Naya,” the source said. “They’ve also found comfort in one another because they understand what each other is dealing with and they know how exhausting it can be to be grieving in the public eye while trying to keep it together for Josey.”

Rivera had been swimming in a California lake with her son in July when she drowned. According to the child, she lifted him into the pontoon boat and yelled for help before being submerged, as reported by Associated Press. Her body was found five days later. Rivera’s death was ruled an accidental drowning. The autopsy also stated that she had prior bouts of vertigo.

A toxicology report indicated that Rivera had small amounts of diazepam, an anti-anxiety medication, and phentermine, an appetite suppressant, in her blood. The report said it was a therapeutic amount in her system.

Every song I’ve ever written, every word I’ve uttered came from a real place and this is no different. ‘Worth a Conversation’ is self-explanatory,” Jeezy said in the statement. “I will talk about issues that directly affect my culture and it’s people. From the front porch conversations to real-life situations, ‘Worth a Conversation’ is bridging the gap. I’m excited to be a part of the FOX Soul family and can’t wait to introduce you to Jay ‘Jeezy’ Jenkins.”

Trump’s ex-campaign manager under probe for stealing $40M: report

Brad Parscale’s wife told police he’s been ‘stressed out for the past two weeks’ and suicidal.

President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager is reportedly under investigation for stealing millions from the 2020 presidential campaign and Republican National Committee.

According to a DailyMail report, Brad Parscale pocketed between $25-$40 million from Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign and $10 million from the RNC, insiders told the outlet. The news follows the release of bodycam video that shows Fort Lauderdale police detaining Parscale after his wife reported that he was threatening to commit suicide on Sunday afternoon..

theGrio previously reported, Candice Parscale told authorities that her husband had guns in the home and that he had been physically violent towards her. Parscale reportedly went willingly to a hospital with the responding officers under Florida’s Baker Act, which allows police to detain someone who’s potentially a threat to themselves or others.

Candice told police Parscale had been “stressed out for the past two weeks and has made suicidal comments throughout the week to shoot himself.”

Parscale served as Trump’s campaign manager until he was demoted in July following the dismal crowd turnout at the rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma. According to a White House insider, Trump later ordered an audit of the RNC, specifically Parscale’s handling of the campaign’s money.

The source explained: “The thing about what Parscale did with the finances of the campaign could actually be totally legal. But Brad has tons of bills since his lifestyle picked up, and he sees the gravy train coming to an end.”

A Trump insider claims Parscale has been spiraling over worry about maintaining his lifestyle following his demotion.

Meanwhile, Tim Murtaugh, the Communications Director for Trump’s 2020 campaign, denied the president’s RNC probe. In a statement to DailyMail.com he said: “It’s utterly false. There is no investigation, no audit, and there never was.”

According to the report, Steve Guest, RNC Rapid Response Director, also noted: “This report is categorically false. There is no audit or investigation of Brad at the RNC.”

Parscale was reportedly earning $15,000 a month as Trump’s campaign chief, making him quite a “wealthy man,” he said.

“I make no secret about the fact that working for the Trump family made me a wealthy man well before I ever became President Trump’s campaign manager,” Parscale told DailyMail.com last year.

“The President is an excellent businessman and being associated with him for years has been extremely beneficial to my family,” he added.

HBCUs experiencing lower COVID-19 infection rates: report

HBCUs are doing something right when it comes to reducing the spread of the virus

While some colleges and universities are having a hard time managing the coronavirus, historically Black colleges and universities are doing something right.

Read More: White House sends 250K virus tests to 41 HBCUs, official says

A recent report by Inside Higher ED says despite the pandemic some schools have been successful at reducing the spread of coronavirus while keeping their students in the classroom.

North Carolina A&T State University, in particular, held classes on Labor Day to prevent students from gathering in large groups at parties or other gatherings.

“We held classes to discourage our students from going anywhere,” said associate vice chancellor for university relations Todd Simmons. “I think they thought it was worth the trade-off,” since students were allowed to take in-person classes when other schools around the country, such as Salem College and Berklee College of Music in Boston are only offering online classes.

HBCU faculty is well aware that Black people are more susceptible to contracting the virus and are encouraging students to wear their masks, socially distance, and not partake in large gatherings. It appears to have worked. The school did not learn of any large gatherings that took place over the Labor Day holiday and between Sept. 11- 17, the school only reported eight new coronavirus cases.

“Our students may be coming to A&T and to other HBCUs with different mindsets and different expectations about what college means,” said Simmons. “They know that the stakes are high and the opportunities to transform their lives are enormous. That may mean they are more ready to police themselves with regard to COVID protection, and that could be an important reason why our campuses are not experiencing big clusters or outbreaks.”

NC A&T is part of the North Carolina school system and though it’s smaller than North Carolina State University, which saw 1,000 new cases since it opened its doors this fall, HBCU leaders say the size of the student body doesn’t offset the significant increase in infections.

Schools like NC A&T are also seeing enrollment increases while some predominately white institutions are seeing a decline. NC A&T saw a 3.9% increase in enrollment from last year. North Carolina’s Elizabeth City State University also saw an increase in enrollment from 1,773 in 2019 to 2,002 for 2020.

“I think some of it is the HBCU culture,” says Brenda Claire Caldwell, president of the Student Government Association at NC A&T. “We’re just like a community, and we want to keep our community safe. We know that Black and brown communities have been affected by COVID and some of us have had family sick from it. And we know we’re going to go back to our vulnerable communities, and I think this motivates us.”

According to the National Urban League, Black people are three times more likely than whites to get the coronavirus.

NBA Youngboy arrested with 15 others on gun, drug charges in Louisiana

NBA Youngboy hit the charts big this year but has now been arrested in his hometown and his on-again-off-again girlfriend Yaya Mayweather may be pregnant

His name means Never Broke Again but it appears that NBA YoungBoy wasn’t confident that a hip-hop career could fulfill his financial goals. According to multiple reports, the 20-year-old rap star born Kentrell DeSean Gaulden was arrested in Louisiana yesterday in a raid that scooped up 15 other people in Gaulden’s Baton Rouge hometown.

Just this month, Gaulden was celebrating “Top,” his third #1 record this year, reported the New York Times. Now he’s implicated in what is suspected to be a drug operation in the Southern city. As reported by Louisiana’s WBRC, Gaulden was arrested when concerned neighbors led police to an abandoned lot on Chippewa Street, where they say it appeared a video was being made.

Read More: DaBaby, Roddy Ricch lead BET Hip Hop Awards nominations

Police identified what they claim were two gangs – Never Broke Again and Bottom Boy Guerillas, some of whom fled when police approached. Three cars were searched with permission and seven others were searched after a judge signed a warrant. Police said they found multiple firearms, including an AK-47, scales, three grams of marijuana that appeared to be packaged for sale, and small doses of hydrocodone and Xanax. Seven other firearms were discarded in grass near the lot.

Gaulden was among members of the group who had large amounts of cash on his person – he was carrying $47K in cash.

Although it’s unclear whether or not he was bailed out, his lawyer, James P. Manasseh, released a statement to press that read:

“It is important to remember that when someone is arrested for a crime it does not mean they are guilty of anything.

Kentrell Gaulden is innocent of the crimes he was arrested for yesterday evening. He did not possess any firearms nor did he possess any controlled dangerous substances.

Law enforcement arrived on scene without any evidence of a crime occurring and immediately detained 15-20 young black men solely based on an alleged tip that firearms were present on the scene. We still have the Second Amendment in the United States.

The immediate detention of these black men was illegal in that it violated their Constitutional rights. The subsequent searches conducted by law enforcement were also illegal.

Even with the illegal searches that were conducted, no firearms or controlled dangerous substances were found on Mr. Gaulden’s person or in his immediate control.

Mr. Gaulden is innocent of the charges he was booked on last night and looks forward to defending himself as such,” the statement concluded.

As his lawyer stated, Gaulden is a suspect but has not been convicted of any crime. However, he has faced charges in the past. As the New York Times reported, at 17, he was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, pleading guilty in that case. Last year, he spent 90 days in jail after his arrest after a shootout in Florida.

Gaulden, now 20, told the judge in his 2017 case that he was trying to do better.

“I was trying to tell her like, I’m changed and I’m trying to do better,” he told a reporter from The Fader in 2017. “I’m trying to do the right fuckin’ thing. I just can’t do stupid shit. But it’s scary — you be scared to do anything.”

Read More: LisaRaye calls out sister Da Brat on air: ‘Y’all don’t know s—t’

Gaulden has also had some drama with the women in his life, which culminated in the arrest of Yaya Mayweather, Floyd Mayweather‘s 19-year-old daughter. In April, she is alleged to have stabbed one of Gaulden’s children’s mothers. Now it appears she is also pregnant as Mayweather revealed what appeared to be a baby bump just hours after Gaulden’s arrest.

However, if Mayweather is pregnant, no one from his camp or hers has confirmed the baby was fathered by Gaulden.

AG Daniel Cameron to release transcripts, recordings in Breonna Taylor case

A Kentucky grand juror was unsettled by the fact that they weren’t given an option of charging two officers.

Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron has decided to release the records related to the grand jury deliberations in the Louisville police killing of Breonna Taylor. The proceedings last week resulted in charges of wanton endangerment for only one officer.

Cameron’s decision came just hours after an unnamed juror filed a court motion seeking the release of the transcripts of the proceedings, as well as permission to speak to the public to “set the record straight.”

Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron speaks at last week’s press conference to announce a grand jury’s decision to indict one of three Louisville Metro Police Department officers involved in the shooting death of Breonna Taylor.

“The full story and absolute truth of how this matter was handled from beginning to end is now an issue of great public interest and has become a large part of the discussion of public trust throughout the country,” Kevin Glogower, the attorney for the juror, wrote in the filing that comes just five days after the indictment.

According to The New York Times, Glogower says that the juror was unsettled by the fact that the grand jury was not given an option of charging Louisville Metro Police Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly and Detective Myles Cosgrove

The 12-member panel was presented only with possible charges for Detective Brett Hankison, who was fired in June.

A spokeswoman for Cameron’s office clarified for the Times that “the only charge recommended (to the grand jury) was wanton endangerment.”

“Our prosecutors presented all of the evidence, even though the evidence supported that Sgt. Mattingly and Detective Cosgrove were justified in their use of force after having been fired upon by Kenneth Walker,” said Elizabeth Kuhn via email.

Last Wednesday, in his news conference, Cameron declined to say what charges were presented to the grand jury.

The new motion specifically requests the court find grand jurors are permitted to discuss what didn’t take place in the grand jury proceedings, including “any potential charges and defendants presented or not presented.”

“Attorney General Cameron attempted to make it very clear that the grand jury alone made the decision on who and what to charge based solely on the evidence presented to them,” the filing read.

The filing says the grand juror wishes to encourage transparency while requesting anonymity because of the nationwide interest.

Atlanta activist arrested for using $200K in BLM donations to fund lifestyle

Sir Maejor Page has been charged with one count of wire fraud and two counts of money laundering.

An Atlanta-based Black Lives Matter activist is facing federal charges of money laundering and wire fraud after he allegedly used donations raised for the nonprofit on personal expenses.

Sir Maejor Page, 32, (born Tyree Conyers-Page) was arrested Friday after authorities said he spent more than $200,000 in funds intended for the social justice movement on tailored suits, guns and a home in Ohio, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Page solicited money through a GoFundMe account called Black Lives Matter of Greater Atlanta, the FBI said in a news release.

“In June 2020, BLMGA social media page received approximately $36,493.80 in donations, in July 2020, it received approximately $370,933.69 in donations, and in August 2020, an additional $59,914.69 in donations, all of this money was transferred from the social media donations to the bank account titled and operated in the name of ‘Black Lives Matter of Greater Atlanta, Inc’, owned and operated by Page,” according to the news release.

Read More: Black Lives Matter products on Etsy raise concerns of exploitation

The FBI said Page told donors that their “funds had been used to fight for George Floyd” and that none was spent on personal items. “All movement related,” he said, according to the complaint.

Page reportedly used some of the BLM donations to purchase a security system for $1,310, furniture totaling more than $12,000, over $4,000 in Walmart items and Home Depot charges of $2,125.67.

According to the press release, “Numerous videos and livestream videos were posted to Page’s personal social media pages showing himself in what appeared to be newly purchased clothing, hotel rooms, and office space in Atlanta. Several audio statements are made by Page in the videos boasting about the money he has, his tailored suits, his nice cufflinks and ‘$150 ties’ and boasting about ‘my room way up at the top….at the top top…they put the bottom feeders on these floors…”

The Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation noted in a statement that that “over the last 7 years” several individuals “have continually misrepresented our organization and solicited donations all in the name of Black Lives Matter,” the organization said.

Read More: Texas teacher fired for refusing to stop wearing Black Lives Matter mask

“The recent and past behavior of Tyree Conyers-Page, also known as Sir Maejor Page, has continued to compromise the integrity of the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, supporters and allies. Our stance remains that Mr. Page is not affiliated with Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation,” the statement continues.  “We reject and will continue to call out the extreme misleading behaviors of people who utilize our name for their own personal wealth and gain; and, who are clearly not in service of the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation or the movement we represent.”

The company has removed Page’s fundraising accounts as well as any associated with the Black Lives Matter of Greater Atlanta organization. Donors who supported Page’s GoFundMe platform are receiving refunds upon request.

“GoFundMe has taken action to ensure you can no longer start a GoFundMe for BLMGA. PayPal has also confirmed BLMGA has been removed from its database,” the statement read. “Campaigns with misuse are very rare, and we take all complaints very seriously. Our team is working with law enforcement and assisting them in the investigation.”

Page was arrested Friday in Toledo and charged with one count of wire fraud and two counts of money laundering.

Mark Cuban picks up Delonte West at gas station to seek help for ex-baller

The Dallas Mavericks owner has offered to pay for the ex-NBA star’s rehab.

Mark Cuban was spotted picking up ex-NBA star Delonte West at a Texas gas station on Monday.

The Dallas Mavericks owner has offered to pay for West’s rehab after photos went viral last week showing the former athlete begging for money on the side of the road, theGRIO previously reported. Sports fans and the NBA world responded to the disturbing images. West’s former coach Doc Rivers and the Players Association have also offered to help …ever since he was filmed shirtless on a city curb, shouting expletives with a bloodied and bruised face back in January.

Following last week’s viral photos taken in Dallas, Cuban had been trying to contact the former Mavericks guard. West reportedly agreed to meet him on Monday. Video footage shows Cuban picking him up at a Dallas gas station. According to TMZ, West was taken to a local hotel, and is said to be receptive to treatment for his mental health issues.

West’s family and close friends have long been trying to convince him to enter rehab, but he has been reluctant until recently, according to the report.

West was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2008.

“I’m sick today [sic] my stomach right now seeing the videos of Delonte,” Jameer Nelson, who played with West at Saint Joseph’s, wrote on social media at the time of the January video New York Post reports. “To answer everybody that’s reaching out to me about his situation … all we can do is pray for Him and his family and hope that he seeks the proper help. Mental illness is something that a lot of people deal with and don’t even know it, until sometimes it’s too late. I’m not sure what exactly is going on with Dwest but he knows I’m in his corner and will help him get through this.”

Several years ago, after a series of bizarre events, West’s brother, Dmitri dished publicly brother’s bipolar disorder diagnosis.

“Delonte West is not crazy, he is not on drugs. I don’t know what exactly is going on in his mind but I can tell you that he is safe and he’s doing OK,” Dmitri said at that time. “My family are trying to get him the best professional help that’s out there, the best that they can afford.”

West played eight seasons in the NBA, including several seasons with LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, the SuperSonics, and Celtics. He played for the Dallas Mavs from 2011-2012.
